Ace Cannon started his career in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, recording on many of the 1950's hits on SUN RECORDS. Says Sam Phillips: "Ace Cannon is the greatest saxophone player who ever lived, but then he came out of the same stables as Carl Perkins, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Bill Justice, etc." In 1959 he started with the BILL BLACK COMBO, which was one of the most popular instrumental groups of their era. They traveled the U.S. and the Bahamas, where he traveled on all concert dates and played the lead saxophone on all the original recordings. They appeared on the most prominent TV shows of that era, including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Merv Griffin Show, Dick Clark's American Bandstand, and The Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, MD.

Pop vocalist Don Cherry was born in Wichita Falls, TX, in 1924. He got his professional start in the music business in his twenties with a short stay as lead singer in the Jan Garber Band. Cherry's spot lasted for all of 17 days. Never one to give up, he did a recording with the Victor Young Orchestra titled "Mona Lisa." His smooth vocal styling drew enough attention that he soon had a record deal. In the '50s he had a number of hit singles under the Columbia Records label. Over the years, Cherry has appeared on The Mike Douglas Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Grand Ole Opry, The Arthur Godfrey Show, The Johnny Carson Show, and many others. He has also performed in major nightclubs in Las Vegas, Reno, Rio de Janeiro, Lake Tahoe, and New Orleans. ~Charlotte Dillon

Recorded in 1997, this schmaltzy project (subtitled “Easy Listening, Lite Jazz”) features the John Pizzarelli trio augmented by the presence of father Bucky Pizzarelli and fellow guitarist Gene Bertoncini.

On the surface it seems that teaming three highly experienced and accomplished guitarists guarantees a high level of artistry. While that might normally be true, here the saccharine arrangements (“Besame Mucho,” “The Girl From Ipanema,” “Orchids in the Moonlight”), plethora of stock licks, and intentionally soothing tempos and harmonies-rarely exploited by any of these three in a typically tasteful playing situation-result in music that is sickeningly sweet and syrupy. ~Jim Ferguson

Still drifting after leaving Weather Report, Shorter meanders about in a sea of electronically dominated backings, following the tide in search of a direction. Nothing wrong with electronics per se; it's just that Wayne's compositions in that idiom are weak, the endlessly undulating melodic lines go nowhere and have nothing fresh to say. Stu Goldberg, Mitch Forman, Jeff Bova and Jim Beard unimaginatively bathe the record in synthesizers, and the drum programming by a host of co-conspirators makes for a rather sterile rhythm environment. On a sheer technical level, Wayne's soprano and tenor work is alright, yet on "Yamanja" he does a depressingly mechanical sounding turn on a lyricon. This Portrait LP was vibraphonist Dave Pike's second recording as a leader. Pike is joined by bassist Herbie Lewis, drummer Walter Perkins, and most notably pianist Bill Evans. It was one of the pianist's first sessions after the tragic death of his bassist, Scott LaFaro, and gives listeners a rare opportunity to hear Evans this late in his career as a sideman.

The music is fairly spontaneous, consisting of two ballads, "Besame Mucho," "Vierd Blues," and Pike's "Why Not" (inspired by Miles Davis' "So What"). An excellent if generally overlooked straight-ahead set.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/pikes-peak-mw0000199414

Thirty-two-year-old Midwesterner Geoff Keezer was one of the last pianists to work as a part of the Ray Brown Trio. Many writers that I have spoken with feel that he was the quintessential Ray Brown pianist. The late Mr. Brown favored double-fisted orchestral pianists with a jones for the blues but also a strong ballad sensibility. I have always favored the late Gene Harris, but Keezer might edge him out by a nose. Mr. Keezer’s previous recording Zero One was well received. The pianist's Telarc debut as a leader is a bold stroke. Keezer teams up with four prominent pianists for a series of duets honoring the great Sam Jones, who turns 85 years old this year. The disc presents Mr. Keezer in the left channel and the other pianists in the right channel.

The results with Kenny Barron, Chick Corea, Benny Green, and Mulgrew Miller are equally fine. Highlights include Keezer’s duet with Benny Green on "Hank’s Blues," where these two Ray Brown pianists practice an impressive display of telepathy. Jones shares his composition "Lullaby" with Mulgrew Miller, whose tenderness serves as a perfect foil for Keezer’s muscular tone. The title cut is Keezer alone, and perhaps celebrates Hank Jones the best  simply. Sublime works well on all levels and we can only hope that the young Mr. Keezer pursues more projects like this inventive and beautiful recording.~ C.Michael Bailey https://www.allaboutjazz.com/sublime-honoring-the-music-of-hank-jones-geoffrey-keezer-telarc-records-review-by-c-michael-bailey.php

Hall and Carter brought in an original apiece and also collaborated on six standards, including "St. Thomas," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Autumn Leaves," and "Alone Together." Kellso has a warm tone and a swinging style, making this a fine outing and a good introduction to his playing. ~Scott Yanow

How Sweet It Is! The Jackie Gleason Velvet Brass Collection is a nice 20-track compilation of Gleason's easy listening brass records, containing lush, appealing versions of such standards as "You're Driving Me Crazy," "But Not for Me," "The Man I Love," "Me and My Shadow," "Take the 'A' Train," "Am I Blue," "What's New?," "Girl of My Dreams," "September Song" and "My Buddy." There's also a handful of fine original compositions, such as "Melancholy Serenade" and "To a Sleeping Beauty," that may not be as strong as the standards, but they're lovely songs nonetheless, and they add value to what already is the strongest compilation of Gleason's lush brass recordings yet assembled. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

New York session great and longtime Harry Belafonte percussionist Ralph MacDonald made his solo debut with Sound of a Drum, successfully fusing the strong Latin flavor of his previous work with the funk and disco sounds dominating clubs in bicentennial America. The title is no misnomer -- each song is a showcase for MacDonald's blistering percussion talents, but he never loses the humility and instincts of a sideman, allowing an expert cast including Grover Washington, Jr., Bob James, and Toots Thielemans their own turns in the spotlight as well. The eight-minute "Calypso Breakdown" is by far the best-known cut here, thanks to its inclusion on the mega-selling Saturday Night Fever soundtrack -- it remains a monster groove that's dated much better than many disco-era instrumentals, thanks in large part to William Eaton's clever, jazz-inspired arrangement and Eric Gale's ferocious guitar solo.~ Jason Ankeny https://www.allmusic.com/album/sound-of-a-drum-mw0000713033

He is considered one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century.  He created possibilities for jazz guitar through his style of chord-melody, his knowledge of chord inversions and progressions, and his use of walking basslines and counterpoint during improvisation. Pass worked often with pianist Oscar Peterson and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Pass

Herbie Mann played a wide variety of music throughout his career. He became quite popular in the 1960s, but in the '70s became so immersed in pop and various types of world music that he seemed lost to jazz. However, Mann never lost his ability to improvise creatively as his later recordings attest. Herbie Mann began on clarinet when he was nine but was soon also playing flute and tenor. After serving in the Army, he was with Mat Mathews' Quintet (1953-1954) and then started working and recording as a leader. During 1954-1958 Mann stuck mostly to playing bop, sometimes collaborating with such players as Phil Woods, Buddy Collette, Sam Most, Bobby Jaspar, and Charlie Rouse. He doubled on cool-toned tenor and was one of the few jazz musicians in the '50s who recorded on bass clarinet; he also recorded a full album in 1957 (for Savoy) of unaccompanied flute. After spending time playing and writing music for television, Mann formed his Afro-Jazz Sextet, in 1959, a group using several percussionists, vibes (either Johnny Rae, Hagood Hardy, or Dave Pike) and the leader's flute. He toured Africa (1960) and Brazil (1961), had a hit with "Comin' Home Baby," and recorded with Bill Evans. The most popular jazz flutist during the era, Mann explored bossa nova (even recording in Brazil in 1962), incorporated music from many cultures (plus current pop tunes) into his repertoire, and had among his sidemen such top young musicians as Willie Bobo, Chick Corea (1965), Attila Zoller, and Roy Ayers; at the 1972 Newport Festival his sextet included David Newman and Sonny Sharrock. By then Mann had been a producer at Embroyo (a subsidiary of Atlantic) for three years and was frequently stretching his music outside of jazz. As the '70s advanced, Mann became much more involved in rock, pop, reggae, and even disco. After leaving Atlantic at the end of the '70s, Mann had his own label for awhile and gradually came back to jazz. He recorded for Chesky, made a record with Dave Valentin, and in the '90s founded the Kokopelli label on which before breaking away in 1996, he was free to pursue his wide range of musical interests. Through the years, he recorded as a leader for Bethlehem, Prestige, Epic, Riverside, Savoy, Mode, New Jazz, Chesky, Kokopelli, and most significantly Atlantic. Taking the first, electric side of Bringing It All Back Home to its logical conclusion, Bob Dylan hired a full rock & roll band, featuring guitarist Michael Bloomfield, for Highway 61 Revisited. Opening with the epic "Like a Rolling Stone," Highway 61 Revisited careens through nine songs that range from reflective folk-rock ("Desolation Row") and blues ("It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry") to flat-out garage rock ("Tombstone Blues," "From a Buick 6," "Highway 61 Revisited"). Dylan had not only changed his sound, but his persona, trading the folk troubadour for a streetwise, cynical hipster. Throughout the album, he embraces druggy, surreal imagery, which can either have a sense of menace or beauty, and the music reflects that, jumping between soothing melodies to hard, bluesy rock. And that is the most revolutionary thing about Highway 61 Revisited -- it proved that rock & roll needn't be collegiate and tame in order to be literate, poetic, and complex. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Nothing pleases the straight-ahead jazz fan more than a long set of well-known and obscured classics played with integrity, soul, and swing by an ensemble of tight musicians, and this fills that bill in spades. Recorded over three days at a studio in Hamburg, the trumpeter and his merry men roll hard and brassy over the feisty rhythms of Christian Ramond (bass) and Oliver Mewes (drums) on such gems as "Beyond the Blue Horizon" and the Lionel Hampton-Charlie Christian classic "Haven't Named It Yet." There's lots of variety and joyful mood-swinging between the New Orleans-flavored "Four or Five Times" (with Engelbert Wrobel's whimsical clarinet) and the lighthearted, muted trumpet-driven romance "Dreamy Mood." The recording derives its name from its inclusion of two Duke Ellington classics, which give pianist Chris Hopkins (who wrote the colorful liner notes) some strong moments to shine: the mysterious "Echoes of Harlem" and the perky "Drop Me off in Harlem." You'll be glad you got off the bus. ~Jonathan Widran
