Agony & Ecstacy is Malene Mortensen’s fi"h release. Her 2003 debut, Paradise, was produced by Niels Lan Doky, andKasper Villaume produced DATE WITH A DREAM from 2005.She recorded and released MALENE in 2006 with Chris Doky producing, and in the holiday season of 2007, she released TO ALL OF YOU, produced by Søren Siegumfeldt. Each album is the result of a unique collaboration between Malene, the session musicians and the producer, and eachalbum has its own unique atmosphere.

However, at 27, with a lot of studio experience behind her, Malene decided to take control of her new recording. No outside produ-cers, no guest musicians. Instead she took her road band into the recording studio to expand on their inspiring concert work.

Since 2007 the personnel in Malene’s band has consisted of four friends from Copenhagen’s Rhythmic Conservatory: Carl Mörner-Ringström (guitar), Magnus Hjorth (piano), Petter Eldh (bass) and Snorre Kirk (drums). Together they have play-ed over 100 concerts in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany,Britain, France, Poland, and not least in Asia. It has been an intense development and the inspiration for this recording.

Malene’s repertoire has always included her own music and in part her own lyrics, but where her earlier releases also fea-tured well-known jazz standards and jazzed-up rock and pop songs, all tunes on Agony & Ecstacy are originals writtenby Malene herself or in collaboration with Carl or Magnus.Malene’s sound has taken a twist away from acoustic standard jazz towards something more electric an update of the jazz/rock fusion of the early 1980’s.

Fortunately, this cool, enticing, energetic and spellbindingmusic will raise the eyebrows of some jazz puritans, but it will also fascinate the rest of us. Audiences unaccustomed to jazz will love the interplay, the great solos, the guitar riffs and Malene’s virtuosic voice and musicality.

Agony & Ecstacy makes it clear that Malene Mortensen can write, and that she composes melodies that stay in your ears long after the tune is over. Her vocals have the con-viction and courage that give the songs a personal sound and carry emotions from Agony & Ecstacy. These are songs from a hard-working artist, continuously pursuing her own path.

Later the same year Malene visited New York to work on new material with Christian Sands playing with Christian McBride’s famous trio. The work with music and lyrics progressed and they continued the work on both sides of the Atlantic for choosing the right material and arrangements for the recording sessions. Malene Mortensen emerged on the Danish jazz scene with her 2003 recording debut as a leader for Universal in Europe, following it up with this release for Stunt. With her fresh, engaging vocals and the potential to establish a following in both jazz and pop like Norah Jones, Mortenson isn't really an improviser, but she works with top-notch musicians who create fresh arrangements of standards, while she also proves herself to be a capable composer. Of particular interest are her interpretations of standards, including the sensuous, slowly savored "I've Got a Date with a Dream" (where she's backed by her trio plus strings and a lap steel player) and a heartfelt "At Last" (backed by pianist Kasper Villaume and soprano saxophonist Claus Waidtlow). She soars in Villaume's imaginative post-bop arrangement of "Take Five," displaying her soulful side. Mortenson's originals are more pop-oriented, though still catchy and entertaining, especially her infectious "Off the Beat."~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/date-with-a-dream-mw0000512052

Malene is the daughter of two musicians, drummer and music teacher Karen Mortensen and trumpet player and composer Jens Winther. Malene grew up as an only child with her mother in Copenhagen, Denmark, at first in Christiania, later at Christianshavn. Yet in 1991 they moved to Elsinore, Karen Mortensen being headhunted to the post as chief music teacher at IPC, International People's College. Karen Mortensen passed away 1993 after two years struggle against cancer. As a tough consequence of this, 11-year-old Malene moved back to the City of Copenhagen. Custody of Malene was given to Karen's friend from student's days at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Birthe Skou, teacher of music theory and ear training. From years 11 to 16, Malene - the little girl with the big voice - sang out her grief in The Children's Choir of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Through the years she was given many solo assignments. At the tender age of 12 Malene was the vocalist in the kid's rock band, Rocking Rabbits, under the leadership of blues singer Chaeg. At the same time she took piano lessons at Hanne Mulvad's. Malene had never played classical music before; Hanne Mulvad had never teached children. But the experiment was a success. During those 6 months Malene learned to play about 30 little piano pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, Erik Satie and Béla Bartók. When she was in 8th and 9th grades at her grammar school, Malene and two female schoolmates formed a gospel trio and regularly performed for private gatherings. Malene entered Sankt Annæ Gymnasium (SAG) - the Copenhagen high school for youngsters with musical talent - in 1998. She tackled the MGK curriculum, the standard three-year course of study combined with a three-year musical program, and graduated in just four years with a dual diploma.

In the spring of 1999 she won second prize in Berlinske Tidende newspaper's music competition. Later that year she gave a solo performance of the gospel song "Ever Smiling Liberty" with the SAG choir and following the event she was booked to sing the song at several spots in Denmark. Malene also appeared numerous times on Copenhagen stages as a soloist with the SAG Big Band. She sang with various jazz and pop groups in the first two years of high school. And occasionally she made a guest appearance in her father's band, Jens Winther Quintet. In 2002, as a virtually unknown highschool student, Malene sang her way into Danish hearts when she won the Danish Eurovision song contest with Tell Me Who You Are. By that time, however, she had already drawn a lot of attention on the Danish Broadcasting Corp's song contest "Stjerne for en aften," (akin to the British "Pop Idol") when she was first runner-up with Sing It Back. The springtime 2002 was a busy time for Malene. She was continuously exposed in the Danish media. She participated in The Eurovision Song Contest in Tallinn, her MGK and high-school exams had to be passed, and there were concerts and a CD project. Despite the hectic schedule Malene capped off her high-school career in June 2002 by earning a 'lucky' 13 - the rarely-awarded superlative of the school grading system - in her major area of study, singing. In September 2002 jazz pianist and producer Niels Lan Doky heard Malene sing at their common old school, SAG, and immediately approached her. Things developed in a musical collaboration: in the fall 2002 Malene, Niels, Anna Lia Bright and Michael Sunding wrote together and individually 9 catchy pop songs and also developed Karen Mortensen's "Aftenkanon", now "Evensong". In December Malene was signed by Universal Music, and she spent 2 weeks in Paris pre-recording her first album, Paradise, at Doky's Studio. The album was realised September 1st, 2003.

Although Malene has recorded with some of the greatest Danish jazz artists as Niels Lan Doky, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Alex Riel, neither the marketing nor the sales were remarkable. Subsequently, Universal Music did not wish to exercise the options in the contract and Malene was set free January 2004. Immediately after this Malene and Kasper Villaume Trio contributed to the Danish jazz-gala success at Midem, in Cannes. Peter Littauer, general manager of record company Sundance, heard Malene sing at this event, and in the light of this experience he signed the both of them in August 2004. Outside Sundance, but with their approval, Malene went to Kiminova Studio to record with Lund Quartet and RLQ Raasted an album containing fine modern original jazz-compositions by flutist Jens Erik Raasted and pianist Christian Lund plus the romantic Aarestrup i marts. The recording of Malene's second solo album, Date With a Dream, took place in January and February 2005. There was already plenty of musical material: songs from Malene's fruitful collaboration with Anna Lia Bright and Michael Sunding in 2002-04 and last, but not least, the new songs written by Malene and her new co-writer and friend from the conservatory, pianist Magnus Hjorth. The final outcome ended up with 50-50 of standard and original compositions, inclusive a ballade by Avishai Cohen with lyrics by Malene and another friend from the conservatory, Marianne Sogaard Andersen.

The album was released April 2005, distributed to 20 countries and with 30,000 sold albums Malene is reaching her international breakthrough. Malene, her third solo album was released November 16, 2006. Malene wrote some personal songs as well as adding some cover songs like John Mayer irresistible City Love, Branford Marsalis jazz classic Another Day and the famous Desperado by Eagles. It features musicians as Chris Potter, Mike Stern, Adam Rogers, Kasper Villaume, Jacob Christoffersen and Rasmus Khielberg. In November 2007, Malene's Christmas album …To All Of You is released. It contains some of the good old classic Christmas songs like Last Christmas, Warm December, Silent Night, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and many others. Agony & Ecstasy, her fifth solo album, is released in September 2009. All the songs are written by Malene herself, and some songs are co written with the musicians in her band. The genre of the music is a fusion between pop, rock and jazz. The musicians on the album are Calle Mörner on guitar, Petter Eldh on bass, Magnus Hjorth on piano and Snorre Kirk on drums, young extremely talented boys from Sweden and Norway.~ http://www.albumtube.io/malene_mortensen/Paradise/bbe3a5f2-0be2-4fe7-a8bd-16c2365e944b/

Here at last is a Danish Christmas album guaranteed to endure! A wonderful recording - warm, swinging and enticing in a tasteful production. We guarantee 100% Christmas spirit.
Lovely Malene Mortensen and her band sing and play their way through a collection of well-known Christmas favorites and lesser known tunes including Silent Night, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Last Christmas, I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm, Let It Snow, Driving Home from Christmas, Winter Wonderland and many others – as well one Danish phsalm: Maria gennem torne går. The collection also includes a newly composed song, Once Upon A Christmas Song, which has everything it takes to become a new Christmas standard.

Malene Mortensen continues to develope her great talent and has been rewarded in recent years with popularity all across the world. Her latest release “Malene” reached the bestseller listsin Japan and Germany. It is currently placed on a 15 spot on the French bestseller list and is for sale just about everywhere in the world. A Danish star!

On her fourth album, the 25-year old vocalist swings persuasively and seductively through a well-known - and for that very reason
- challenging repertoire. Please also take note of pianist Henrik Gunde, who recently released the highly praised album, “Gunde On Garner”. And listen to the elegant bass and drum duo of Kasper Vadsholt and Jeppe Gram. Among others, saxophonist Jesper Loevdal visited the studio, and most remarkably, the French harmonica-player Olivier Ker Ourio, who lends his golden tone and incredible musicality to three tracks.

Luckily Christmas is not far off! Have a great season with Malene....

Malene Mortensen who represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2002 has just released her eigth album. The latest is titled Can't Help It, and has been recorded in New York in collaboration with well known American jazz musician Christian Sands. It is nearly 13 years ago since she represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Tell Me Who You Are, which receieved only seven points, and ended last. A lot has happened for Malene Mortensen since then. Gone is the young and insecure girl we saw on stage that night. She has been replaced by a mature jazz performer, who knows herself and her strengths.  The 8th album from Malena which was released today, the 19th of January 2015, is titled Can't Help It.

It is recorded in Systems 3 Studio in Brooklyn, New York and it is the first time Malene records outside Scandinavia. The album is recorded with Christian Sands, Burniss Earl Travis II, Terreon Gully and Paul Banks as musicians. In partular Christian Sands will be a well known name to many jazz lovers. They met during Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2013. Can't Help It features 10 tracks. Most written by Malene and Sands, but there are also tracks by Paul Banks and Stevie Wonder. Malene is also working as a Church singer and from time to time she sings with a pop cover band. She is also thinking about taking a masseur education. As she puts it to newspaper BT, "I need some more economical stability. The word stability came into my life when I turned 30 ;-)" ~ Charlotte Jensen  http://www.eurovisionary.com/eurovision-news/new-album-released-malene-mortensen

Malene Mortensen is ready to release her sixth album, “You Go To My Head”, at the age of only 29 years – an impressive activity for the young talent. With considerable studio and live experience, she has decided to take matters into her own hands on the recording sessions for the new album. Without help from any outside producers, guest musicians or such the album has been made as a continuation of the inspiring collaboration with her live band throughout many concerts. Malene’s new album “You Go To My Head” contains a wonderful mixture of jazz standards, which are close to her heart, such as “Misty” by Erroll Garner, “My Shining Hour” by Harold Arlen and the title track “You Go To My Head” by J. Fred Coots. In addition to these, Malene has written seven original compositions in collaboration with Carl Mörner Ringström, who is the guitarist in the band and also Malene’s co-producer on the production.

“I’m so happy with the dream band I’ve recorded with. The process of practicing leading up to the days in the studio has been the best experience in making an album so far; intense, creative and with lots of involvement from the musicians”. Over the recent years Malene Mortensen and her band have been playing more than 150 concerts in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, France, Poland and not least in Asia. It’s been a passionate and growing cooperation that has been the inspiration for this second self-produced release. You’ll notice how Malene and her band come together in perfect harmony as a result of the close relationship that has developed during touring. Malene’s expression has taken a turn from standard acoustic jazz, known from her first four releases, towards a more electric sound, which you’ll hear on “Agony & Ecstasy”. “You Go To My Head” contains a perfect blend of standards in surprising new arrangements mixed with Malene’s original tracks and it shows a fresh and updated sound of 2012!   http://calibrated.org/portfolio/malene-mortensen-2/

She made her entrance into the Danish music scene in 2001, during the first season of "Stjerne for en aften", the Danish edition of Star for a Night. She made it to the finals, with her rendition of Moloko's "Sing it back". The following year, she entered the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, the Danish national pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Although her song "Vis mig hvem du er" performed strongly in the national final, receiving top marks from all televoting regions, it was a full-scale failure at the Eurovision Song Contest 2002, in its English version, "Tell Me Who You Are". Her song received a mere seven points, placing her last amongst the 24 participating countries. The unforeseen Eurovision outcome was a blow to her previous achievements, but it did not make her give up her musical career. In 2003 she released her debut album called "Paradise". This album, revolving around modern jazz, was supported by three of Denmark's best known jazz musicians: Niels Lan Doky (piano), Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass) and Alex Riel (drums). ~ Bio  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malene_Mortensen
