Although sometimes associated with jazz or smooth, Carol Duboc is really a more pop-oriented singer in the vein of Norah Jones. Her voice is pleasing, she swings lightly and she pays close attention to lyrics, sounding hip without being adventurous. Joined by a supportive rhythm section, Duboc performs seven originals (six of which were co-written with her keyboardist Tim Carmon) and six pop/rock standards, reviving such songs as "Sunny," "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Blackbird" in fairly fresh and attractive ways. ~Scott Yanow

Jazz vocalist and pianist Carol Duboc delivers her eighth solo album presenting seven vibrant originals and three cover tunes on a set of jazz, R&B, funk and Smooth-styled music on the exciting Open The Curtains. Making this a special recording for Duboc, the singer illuminates the power of women by assembling an all-star, talented cast of female players including Patrice Rushen, Sheila E, and Mindi Abair among others. The result of course, is a collection of hard-driving soulful songs with an appreciable groove propelling the music forward.

The gyrating and percussive "In Pieces," starts the ball rolling featuring the Afro-Latin funk sounds of Sheila E pounding the rhythm as saxophonist Abair extends herself on a burning solo, the song was inspired by a partnership that didn't go well and the tune is meant to convey the act of bouncing back and not falling to pieces. "Feeling Good" is one of the covers of the set and a tribute piece to the great Nina Simone, in which the singer voices the lyrics with emotion and a bit of soul. The title track brings out the funk-side of the leader as she and the ladies who provide the background vocals, reveals what's behind the curtains: high-octane funk and superb piano work by Rushen.

Having perhaps one of the finest melodies of the session, the light "Whisper" is one of the standout songs of the album featuring Rushen on Fender Rhodes, Bibi McGill on guitar, bassist Rhonda Smith and Cora Coleman (Queen Cora) on the drums. All the ladies seem to get into the action on the fast-paced swinging and R&B-styled "Faces," a personal favorite of the leader that here, provides one shoulder-moving statement. The vocalist sings one sultry and seductive rendition of the classic "Fever," showcasing Aubrey Logan on the trombone and Queen Cora on the drums.

The Queen is also on tap on the hard-driving "Miss You Missing Me," as Duboc belts out the lyrics and the drums pound out the beats on another upbeat and lively song. The music begins to close on the delicate and smooth-styled "Precious" highlighted by Abair's soothing soprano saxophone voice and comes to an end on the funky/R&B-tinged finale "I'm Gone," as the songstress reaches and provides a graceful exit. A gifted singer and composer, Carol Duboc unveils an enchanting and tasteful selection of songs designed to get one moving and bopping your head when you Open The Curtains, well done! ~Edward Blanco

From the sound of Colored Glasses, Carol Duboc’s seventh release, I’ll have to examine her entire catalog. An accomplished jazz singer, Duboc flexes her R&B chops as well as her songwriting skill on this self-penned 10-song album. Colored Glasses begins with the layered and lush “Hypnotic,” a slow burning testament to the pull of love. Saxophonist Eric Marienthal provides soprano saxophone leads while Carol Duboc’s voice floats over the grove provided by master bassist Jimmy Haslip and drum guru Vinnie Colaiuta. On the track “Every Shade of Blue,” producer Jeff Lorber gets in on the act. In addition to holding down production duties, Lorber adds his distinctive stamp on keyboards and programming. His organ solo is effective but brief, however Duboc’s sass-filled vocal keeps everything moving.

“Celestial Skies” then shifts the tempo and tone of the album. In “Every Shade of Blue,” Carol Duboc explored the lower part of her wide range. With “Celestial Skies,” she shows how versatile her instrument is. The ballad is simply lovely and features a moving flute solo from Hubert Laws. The song “Spinning” evokes memories of classic ’70s-era R&B. Jeff Lorber is a gain the featured soloist, recalling an almost Rufus-like synth solo, but Duboc’s lyric simultaneously evokes images of nervousness and anticipation. Percussionist Lenny Castro augments the rhythm section on this gem.

Her title track picks up the pace. Guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. and Michael Thompson have a joyous interplay, which helps propel “Colored Glasses.” That energy is revisited with the song “Code Red,” ending the album with a blast of jazz/R&B energy. Duboc’s tale of desire, regardless of the warning signs, is a familiar tale to those who have loved and lost. The infectious grove and passionate vocals all but make you miss the song’s warning signs. Ultimately, you’ll find that listening to Carol Duboc’s Colored Glasses is the best kind of therapy. http://somethingelsereviews.com/2015/09/12/carol-duboc-colored-glasses/

Pianist Jimmy Rowles once famously remarked, "Burt Bacharach's tunes sound like third alto parts." Well, don't try to sell singer Carol Duboc on that notion. Based on the effort she expended on her latest album, she's quite comfortable with the songwriter who hails from Carol's hometown, Kansas City. That effort extended to producing the session; doing all the arrangements; adding one of her own songs to the mix; and above all, securing flutist Hubert Laws to be principal soloist and gap-filler. Their music-making pays off handsomely. While Bacharach's rangy lines and awkward intervals post a challenge to most singers, Ms Duboc is not your average vocalist. She boasts a clear soprano range so necessary to scale the frequent Bacharach peaks plus firm intonation, as well as the ability to swing. In short, she's an intelligent jazz stylist.

Duboc also possesses a warm, soothing alto range, which she puts to good use on her original bossa, "My Melody," and especially on "A House Is Not A Home." She takes "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" slower than most, plumbing its depth and finding a surprising poignancy in the tune, turning it into a ear-opener. "Wives and Lovers" is also given unique treatment: it has bookends in 3/4, but they bracket a straightforward, swinging 4/4. She also turns "The Look of Love" into a seductive swinger. Listen carefully to the beginning of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again:" following a clever, economical instrumental introduction, the first time Duboc sings the title, the first word, "I'll," slides off her tongue just like a Hubert Laws flute lick.  Whether that was planned, or a matter of osmosis, it makes for a convenient segue. Laws goes well beyond his second billing and very nearly dominates the session. His timbre is ideal for her voice; her gaps are custom-ma de for his pithy comments. The same kind of rapport is heard elsewhere: listen for the comping support from pianist Joe Cartwright; guitarist Danny Embrey; and particularly bassist Bob Bowman. Must be something in that K.C. water. Thank you, Carol...3rd alto parts never sounded so good. ~ Harvey Siders   http://jazztimes.com/articles/25347-burt-bacharach-songbook-carol-duboc-featuring-hubert-laws.

So, what happens when a sultry vocalist meets up with a master genius keyboardist? To some it may be referred to as a meeting of the minds and to others, a collaboration. However one might choose to view it, it did go down right here at SoCal’s world famous Baked Potato; a place where genius and sultry often collide….in a good way.

Vocalist, Carol Duboc and Jeff Lorber have teamed up like two mighty super hero’s bringing to the people of Universal City all the musical goods they’d been longing for. Together they have ridden in under the cover of darkness to ignite the embers that rests inside the hearts of jazz goers here on the west coast.

A crew of five: Grammy Nominee, Jeff Lorber on keys while Grammy award winning Yellow Jackets bassist, Jimmy Haslip once again laid it down with his sixth sense or six string. And then there is drummer, Tony Moore socking it to us with more than just your average four beat rhythm. Tony knows how to work all four limbs while keeping it all in his corner pocket. And the very humble, Adam Hawley. God must have eaten his Wheaties the morning he created this monster guitarist. Standing quietly behind Carol and to the right of Moore, Hawley single handidly transformed his listening audience to true born again believers. I’m sure somewhere in the UK, the spirit of Jimi Hendrix is “smiling.” ~SJT

Contemporary jazz vocalist Carol Duboc presents her sixth Gold Note Music recording, featuring performances by Grammy nominated keyboardist Jeff Lorber (who also co-wrote and co-produced the CD), Grammy award winning electric bassist Jimmy Haslip, Grammy nominated upright bassist Brian Bromberg, guitarist Michael Thompson, world-renowned flutist Hubert Laws and Grammy award winning drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.
