Renowned Australian composer and opera singer David Hobson had his sights set on a career as an economist or lawyer, but the Ballarat native's plans were thwarted by the intervention of the Victoria State Opera. Hobson made his operatic debut as Rodolfo in La Bohéme in 1987, became a company member of the Australian Opera, and was awarded the Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship the following year.
