It has been a while since Danish singer, Sinne Eeg, joined Stunt Records' roster of artists with the album Face the Music (2014), but in a way, her latest album is a new beginning. All sails have been set to make Dreams (2017) the international breakthrough that the singer deserves. In fact, Eeg has already achieved quite a lot, winning prizes and toured internationally, but this album, a partnership between ArtistShare and Stunt Records, signals a rise in ambition. First of all, esteemed jazz writer Neil Tesser has been brought in to write the liner notes and in keeping with the genre, he does not hold back the praise, calling her "the real deal" as he notices her: "emerald tones both light and dark, sometimes throaty or bitingly clear." Tesser touches upon Eeg's biography and mentions her inspiration from church, her fascination with the Great American Songbook, her ability to write her own material and, not least, her pure musicality that comes through in a voice that is like an instrument.

Her voice is allowed to shine in a band that includes her regular musical companion, pianist, Jacob Christoffersen, and an A-list band featuring the drum-whisperer Joey Baron, Larry Koonse's crisp guitar and not least the superb backing of bassist Scott Colley. Together they explore a repertoire that covers Eeg's self-penned songs, including the political ballad "Aleppo," dedicated to the children of Syria, and the ethereal word-less title track where Eeg sings lines in tandem with Koonse. She also shows her knack for writing a good ballad. "Time to Go" has something of the quality of "Waiting for Dawn," a jewel in Eeg's own catalog. There is also room for tried and true standards like "Anything Goes," "I'll Remember April," "Falling in Love with Love" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," which Eeg tackles with effortless musicality and class, and class is exactly the keyword that describes this album. It shows that Eeg is not only one of Denmark's finest jazz singers, but also a voice that should be able to court an international audience. ~ Jakob Baekgaard https://www.allaboutjazz.com/stunt-records-in-the-spotlight-enrico-pieranunzi-and-sinne-eeg-by-jakob-baekgaard.php

As part of her musical studies, Sinne studied with American singer Janet Lawson in New York.

Sinne Eeg has won the Danish Music Awards prize in the category Best Danish Vocal Jazz Album of the Year three times: in 2007, 2010 and 2014, for her albums Waiting for Dawn, Don't Be So Blue and Face the Music. Sinne Eeg’s distinctive vocals have earned her a loyal and rapidly growing fan base in her native country of Denmark and around the world. Considered the preeminent jazz vocalist in Scandinavia, Sinne has already made her mark in Japan, China, and throughout Europe with her exquisite live performances and award-winning studio recordings. Face The Music, released in 2014, earned her the Danish Music Award (Denmark’s Grammy) for Best Jazz Vocal CD, along with the Ben Webster Prize (for which Sinne was the sole female recipient for the last 30 years), and the Prix du Jazz, awarded by France’s Academie du Jazz.As a singer she is influenced by Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, but with her personal touch of soft darkness, Sinne keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music.“Eeg shows she’s steeped in tradition but pushing it in her own direction… with technique and sensitivity aplenty” Downbeat by Fred Bouchard.

“Eeg proves to be an expert in the art of inflection. She stresses a lyric in unexpected yet appropriate ways, demonstrates unerring intonation and pitch control, and shows herself to be an impressive improviser and communicator. Her vocals are never overbearing, but there’s no doubt about the fact that she’s in the driver’s seat.” All About Jazz by Dan Bilawsky  http://sinnemusic.com/about/

Sinne Eeg’s album ‘The Beauty Of Sadness’ is a natural follow up to the two award-winning albums before it, ‘Don’t Be So Blue’ (2010) and ‘Waiting For Dawn’ (2007). The music on the album encompasses a full dynamic range, from sublimely minimalistic (duo with bass clarinet), to elegantly grandiose through a musical partnership with ‘The Danish National Chamber Orchestra’ which since its foundation in 1939 has aimed to provide audiences with musical entertainment of the highest caliber in every conceivable genre.

Take legendary drummer Peter Erskine (world re-known for his time with bands like Weather Report and Steps Ahead) and add him to Sinne’s working band, plus a handful of top arrangers and sidemen from the international jazz scene. Combine them with ‘The Danish National Chamber Orchestra’ and put Sinne Eeg in front and in charge, both musically and conceptually, and the musical potential is almost unlimited. As Thomas Conrad from ‘All About Jazz’ in NYC describes so accurately; “Sinne Eeg is a singer with the whole package; good taste, looks, height, pipes, range, control and the ability to both scat and tell a story”

07. Molasses (7:36)

A film director once said that you can't make a great film with a weak script. The same goes for bands of any kind be it jazz or rock or any kind. You can't have a great band without a great drummer. A band can get by with an average bassist or guitarist, but not with an average drummer. It's the heartbeat of any band. One of the things that has made the band Rolling Stones what they are is drummer Charlie Watts and his exceptional and unusual drumming skills. For more than 50 years, Watts has been the propulsive engine that has driven this juggernaut. Few other drummers were as integral to the development of rock and roll music by creating rollicking grooves that were executed with an unhurried elan. Watts is a player you can listen to for his sound alone as he balances the smooth and the jagged with great ease. Contemporary musicians don't come much more graceful in sound or execution than that.

Apart from his long stint as the drummer of one of the most successful and certainly the longest running rock and roll band in the world, it's not a secret Watts's true love has always been jazz and that he has always had a deep appreciation and admiration for this music which hasn't been that much exploited by the press. During the '50s and '60s, Watts fell in love with jazz music through 78 rpm vinyls and the music of musicians like saxophonists Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Gerry Mulligan, trumpeter Miles Davis, to name but a few as well as the drummers they employed. Since then, he has been a passionate jazz aficionado whose knowledge about this music sits between the reverential and encyclopedic. During his sojourn with a marketing agency, he even penned an illustrated book about Charlie Parker as a tribute to him and has been collecting old drum sets used by drumming legends. During the day he would work at the agency and during the night he would play local gigs. And as many of his generation, he has learnt his trade both by listening to record and by observing jazz drummers in the London's London's jazz circles.

As a result, his drumming style has always been unorthodox and original. When he joined the Rolling Stones he used his jazz chops in order to invent his style of playing rock and blues rock that the Stones became known for and is the reason why he is so revered these days. When the Stones played in New York for the first time during their first American tour, he went to Birdland to see performances by his bassist Charles Mingus and saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and the latter would play years later with the Stones on a song named "Waiting on a Friend."

So it wasn't until the '80s and the '90s that Watts began fronting his own jazz bands whenever the demanding tours and work with the Stones would let him. Since then he has formed a number of jazz, boogie-woogie and big band outfits, including Rocket 88, the Charlie Watts Quintet and the Charlie Watts Tentet. Probably that is best portrayed in the thriller movie "Blue Ice" with actor Michael Caine playing a jazz club owner and Watts' band was the house jazz combo that brilliantly rocked the house. Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band was instigated in 2009 by English trumpeter Gerard Presencer, who is also a member of the band. The Band had four days of rehearsals and then had a performance at the then newly opened Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen. All but two of the pieces here are rewrites of earlier, previously recorded selections either with the Rolling Stones or a selection of suits from his duet record with another drumming legend Jim Keltner. But to make a big band work has really very little to do with "star power" and has really everything to do with hard work. If it is played too conservative then everything will sound predictable and everyone will get bored. For a start, this record doesn't break any new ground. The emphasis is more on moods, harmonies and at moments the arrangements do nod at Gil Evans' or Mingus' styled approaches.

The date opens with two parts of "Elvin Suites" which as an original tune from the project with Kelter is a single composition. The original is an African styled piece with African harmonic voices meshed with piano flashes and cymbals. All of that is beautifully arranged here with dry hissing of Watts' brushes that drives the first part. It is indeed difficult to discern between what's arranged and what is spontaneous. The band's rapport is impressive and everything it plays sounds right. The second part emphasizes the drums and there are polyrhythmic runs that drive this piece with saxophonist Uffe Markussen taking the lead and soon the band steps on the gas and ups the game loud.

The Rolling Stones classics are beautifully rearranged and reharmonized. Nothing in these arrangements would hint at the original songs but a solo instrument would take a lead and directly reference the original melody. Even though named as "Faction" as soon as one hears the melody on the flugelhorn it becomes clear that this is "Satisfaction." Watt's subtle and non-flashy rhythm playing is utterly flawless and galvanizes the band. The same goes for the other two Stones classics "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Paint it Black." By no means is this a tribute of faithful recreations of these songs. The arranger shows a daring flair for reimagining these songs. Each of them is rethought and remodeled in order to come out with a vibrant new music. With its imaginative blend of melodies and grooves and colorful textures and timbres, these songs are a launchpad for the big band and its soloists to shine.

"I Should Care" is one of the hidden gems in this collection. There is a certain easiness and flow in this composition, but no blandness at all. The various soloists are stimulating and attentive conversationalists, always listening and often picking up on each other's quips. The album closes on a high note with a beautiful stomp "Molasses." Everything here is filled with movement. It's rich and sticky in rhythm and harmony and is exciting and boiling with energy.

This project feels good in the body and soul. The collaborative energy of this band is exhilarating and a joy to listen. More of this, please. ~by Nenad Georgievski

Christina von Bülow, Søren Kristiansen and Jesper Lundgaard have formed a trio since 2006. The co-operation came naturally in a love of the roots of the jazz and not least to all the fine, old melodies that belong to this tradition. Throughout the years, all three musicians have made a name both in Denmark and internationally and are considered among Denmark's finest jazz musicians. Christina von Bülow is one of the few musicians who have had the unique chance to receive Stan Getz's education during a 1990 stay in California the year before he died. Her music is also clearly inspired by this and she has been famous for its very melodic and lyrical games over the years.

In February 2014, the CD released 'The Good Life' (Stunt Records), which is a live recording of the concert at Jazzhus Dexter during the quarterly tour of November 2012. (Translated from Danish.)

Clara Vuust is a Danish jazz singer from Copenhagen, a capital of jazz in Northern Europe and once home to great musicians such as Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon...

In September 2018 she is releasing her third studio album "Before You Walk Away" - recorded in both Copenhagen and Catania - from the very north to the very south of Europe. The sound combines a Nordic, lyrical vocal tradition with the Mediterranean warmth in the arrangements by Italian composer and arranger Francesco Calì - and as such it makes sense to have created the album in the two places that also come together in the music.

Clara was born in the outskirts of Aarhus – the second biggest town in Denmark. Her childhood was all about children's choir and classical piano until, at the age of 11, she discovered jazz music. For her eleventh birthday she got a Real Book filled with jazz standards and a new world opened: Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and Ella Fitzgerald were put on repeat on the stereo. Clara continued with classical singing, but slowly the love for the jazz genre took over and after a breif encounter with medical school she decided to pursue a career as a jazz singer and vocal trainer.

Clara Vuust did her musical education as a singer at RMC – the Rhythmic Music Conservatory – in Copenhagen. There she met Francesco Calì, pianist and composer from Italy. They quickly became partners, both in music and in life, and he co-writes, arranges and produces all of Vuust's albums.

Clara is currently an artist at Storyville Records - the oldest independent jazz label in Europe - where she has released two albums "Here's to Love" and "A Winter Tale", and has a third one coming September 2018. The Storyville "family" counts numerous great Danish Jazz musicians.

The curious blend of pianist Eliane Elias with conductor and arranger Bob Brookmeyer leading the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra makes for a surprising mix. Brookmeyer, long established as one of the top jazz writers and a phenomenal valve trombonist to boot, was not familiar with the recordings of the Brazilian keyboardist, but he was clearly up to the challenge of scoring her music. Brookmeyer gives "Just Kiddin'" a big and bold post-bop treatment, with an underlying funky rhythm and a bit of electronics thrown in for fun. Elias and Brookmeyer share the solo spotlight in the breezy setting of her ballad "So in Love." Far more low-key is "Moments," with sparse piano lines backed by Brookmeyer's rich scoring for the brass and a fine solo by flugelhornist Henrik Bolberg Pedersen. The exotic, high-energy setting of "The Time Is Now" is a more modern bossa nova, showcasing Elias and Brookmeyer, along with bassist Thomas Ovesen and drummer Jonas Johansen. "One Side of You" is a haunting ballad made more so by Brookmeyer's brilliant arrangement. This session may throw a bit of a curve to longtime fans of either Eliane Elias or Bob Brookmeyer, but this successful CD is very much an ear opener. ~Ken Dryden

Violinist Stuff Smith is heard on this CD during three different dates from his later years when he lived in Copenhagen. Best are four hard-swinging collaborations with fellow violinist Svend Asmussen, including a charming version of "Lady Be Good" that has both of the fiddlers singing. In addition, Smith performs two of his originals in 1967 with the Kenny Drew Trio (seven months before his death) and matches up with violinist Poul Olsen (who sounds a bit like Stuff) on four numbers, including a riff-filled "One O'Clock Jump." An excellent and well-recorded release by the exciting swing violinist Stuff Smith. ~Scott Yanow

First Conversation is Cécilie Norby's fourth CD on the American label Blue Note. And which one. The former poptose really estimates a mature and seductive blue tone on the seven standards on the album. On their own compositions by the way. And even on her interpretations of - in this context - so strange numbers like Police's Tea In The Sahara and Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Even on them she stays within the tight limits she herself has spelled out, and that makes the album the original work it has become. The foundations of the music are from some of today's greatest jazz musicians in Scandinavia - Lars Danielsson (bass), Carsten Dahl (piano), Per Jørgensen (trumpet) and Jon Christensen (drums). The album is also recorded with that crew. However, as the sound image turned out to be too thin, the producer added strings - from the Radio Entertainment Orchestra. The result is deeply fascinating. Rarely beautiful. And especially songs such as Kyrie, Never Let Me Go and First Conversation must be highlighted for their compositional qualities. Stuff Smith Quartet, Svend Asmussen - Hot Stuff

[5:38] 12. Time's Blues
[4:15] 13. Oh, Lady Be Good

Violinist Stuff Smith's recording career was a bit erratic, so every new release is greeted with much anticipation by fans of the swinging violinist. But Hot Stuff is actually a compilation of two earlier, out of print Storyville CDs, containing all nine tracks from Smith's Live at the Montmartre and four duets with violinist Svend Asmussen taken from Hot Violins. Smith is joined by expatriate pianist Kenny Drew, the young virtuoso bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and drummer Alex Riel at the Montmatre. Highlights include a blazing rendition of "Take the 'A' Train" and his own "Timme's Blues" (saluting the gadfly producer Baron Timme Rosenkrantz), the latter of which features the hottest solos of the evening. The songs from a year later feature violinist Svend Asmussen joining Smith in a live recording made for Danish radio, along with pianist Jorgen Borch, bassist Erik Molback, and drummer Bjarne Rostvold. There's quite a bit of vocal banter in "C Jam Blues," with Smith toying with the lyrics to "Duke's Place" and clearly taking his own path as Asmussen plays a pizzicato line behind him. "Caravan" is especially exotic, as Asmussen switches to a tenor violin, while their unusually slow introduction establishes a catchy vamp before they revert to a swinging mode. Asmussen is thrown by Smith's ad-libbed vocal introduction to "Oh, Lady Be Good," though he recovers quickly to trade scatted choruses with the American and even scats in unison with his violin. This CD should be considered essential for anyone who enjoys jazz violin. ~Ken Dryden

One of the top European straight-ahead jazz musicians from 1970 onward, Danish reedman Jesper Thilo has appeared on many records with American artists in addition to recording with his fellow countrymen. His tenor sound is reminiscent of Zoot Sims. Thilo, who has also occasionally played alto and clarinet, first recorded as a leader for Storyville in 1973, and in the 1980s and 1990s on Storyville his sidemen at various times included Hank Jones, Kenny Drew, Clark Terry, Roland Hanna, and Harry "Sweets" Edison. Thilo also appeared on Miles Davis' Aura (with compositions and arrangements by fellow Dane Palle Mikkelborg), released by Columbia in 1989. After the turn of the millennium Thilo has continued recording for a variety of labels, including several releases on Stunt Records: Remembering Those That Were (2009), On Clarinet (2010), and Scott Hamilton Meets Jesper Thilo (2011). ~ Scott Yanow https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/jazz-la-carte-feat-olivier-antunes-bo-stief-frands/609960780

The best titles of the icon of the new wave, signed Gainsbourg, Katerine, Bassiak, Godard ... included Under the sun exactly more unpublished including 2 duets with Howe Gelb. Anna Karina has always sung. Often in movies. Since "A woman is a woman" in 1960 where she sings "The song of Angela" written by Jean-Luc Godard and composed by Michel Legrand, Anna Karina sang Bassiak (Rezvani) always for Godard and especially Serge Gainsbourg who conceived for her her only musical comedy "Anna" in 1967. New Wave icon, the actress of Danish origin offers a compilation of movie songs some of which are edited here for the first time (extracts from the films "Last song" of Dennis Berry and "Haut, Bas, Fragile" by Jacques Rivette) as well as titles from his album written by Philippe Katerine). As a bonus, several original songs complete this retrospective including two duets recorded in 2017 with Howe Gelb, a leading artist on the American rock scene. "I am an adventuress" throws with her sparkling blue eyes the one who has spent her life playing, singing and dancing under the starry eyes of George Cukor, Tony Richardson, Luchino Visconti, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Raoul Ruiz or Jonathan Demme and who must his stage name to Coco Chanel. [5:31] 10. The H Chord Blues

Bass – Thomas Fonnesbæk; Drums – Karsten Bagge; Guitar – Jacob Fischer; Violin – Kristian Jørgensen.

Kristian Jørgensen is a promising young Danish jazz violinist, with this being his fifth CD as a leader. Accompanied by frequent collaborator Jacob Fischer, bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk, and drummer Karsten Bagge, Jørgensen shows a remarkable freshness on his instrument, which is also helped by his choice of offbeat songs like Irving Berlin's lyrical gem "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" (from the musical Annie Get Your Gun), which features lyrical solos by the leader and Fischer. But Jørgensen transforms tango master Astor Piazzolla's "Escuallo" into more of a fusion setting, giving it a bluesy sound as he swings like mad. He recasts the sole standard, "But Not for Me," by alternating between funk and swing. Jørgensen's originals are just as potent. "That Old Soccer Boy" is full of whimsy, while "Belle de Boskoop" blends Gypsy swing with bossa nova. Recommended. ~Ken Dryden

Cæcilie Norby - Queen Of Bad Excuses

While many pop jazz vocalists such as Holly Cole and Diana Krall are releasing great vocal jazz albums of cover tunes and standards, few are writing songs of the quality that Norby produces. Queen of Bad Excuses is probably the best contemporary pop jazz vocal performance I've heard. Caecillie's previous albums have included a few good originals (especially the excellent Snow on My Little Corner of the Sky) admidst the covers, but this album is fresh, original, and features Norby's exquisite vocals and songwriting from start to finish. From the beautiful Forever Broken to the frantic Psyko Pippi, Norby's voice is smooth and agile, and her piano playing solid and supportive, regardless of the type of music she's doing. Highly, highly recommended. ~Jeffrey J Hanson

Etta Cameron (b. Ettamae Louvita Coakley, November 21, 1939, Nassau, Bahamas – March 4, 2010, Aarhus, Denmark) was a Bahamian–Danish singer. She especially sang jazz and gospel, and left her mark in the Danish music culture through her entire career from her arrival in Denmark in the 1970s. She was made a Knight of Dannebrog in 1997. Etta Cameron was also well known as one of the judges in the first two seasons of Scenen er din, the Danish version of the American TV show Star Search. She came to Denmark from the DDR, but found herself unable to leave East Berlin for five years, after a performance commitment during which time she had lost her passport.

Etta died on March 4, 2010 after a long illness. She had two children, Debbie and Steve. Debbie Cameron is following her mother's footsteps and is going for a singing career.
