For more than a decade, the classic honeyed voice of jazz vocalist Denise Jannah has been heard on her solo albums in the U.S., but she has been singing much, much longer. After a childhood spent alternately in Surinam and Holland, she attended the Hilversum Conservatory, graduating in 1971. Her first American release was in 1991 with her album, Take It From the Top. Two others followed, A Heart Full of Music and I Was Born in Love With You. In 2000, Jannah became the first Dutch solo artist to release an album on Blue Note with The Madness of Our Love.

Denise Jannah made her debut as a leader with this 1991 session for Timeless. This native of Surinam (Dutch Guiana) has a strong voice that swings mightily and conveys emotion without ever resorting to sappiness. You have to like a singer who restores the often omitted verse to an oldie like "Pennies from Heaven," then scats up a storm to boot. No one does the verse to the standard "Willow Weep for Me," yet Jannah's haunting introduction, backed solely by pianist Michel Herr, sets up the message of the song perfectly. But nowhere does Jannah pack as big a punch as she does in her moving take of "I Get Along Without You Very Well." Bop fans will love the intricate take of "Groovin' High" featuring a fine alto sax solo by Rolf Delfos and muted trumpet by Angelo Verploegen in which she alternates between adept scatting and singing Kirby Stone's vocalese lyrics. She is also open to contemporary material, delivering a heartfelt interpretation of rocker Sting's "Fragile" in an easygoing bossa nova setting. Though Denise Jannah has made many rewarding CDs following this remarkable debut, this CD is well worth acquiring, too. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/take-it-from-the-top-mw0000426428

An eclectic singer with three previous jazz albums, Denise Jannah has performed with such widely disparate organizations as the Willem Breuker Collective, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, the Dutch Metropole Orchestra and starred in major productions of A Night At The Cotton Club and Ain’t Misbehavin’. Her attractive voice and crystal-clear delivery bring standards into instant focus while offering spirit and soul with distinction.
Supported by a veteran piano trio, Jannah toys with the beat. She never loses control, but moves in and out of time with the band again and again. Her four compositions reveal a penchant for employing meters as tools for driving home desired themes. Jannah’s waltz, "If Only," sweeps along easily with pleasant thoughts of what the future may hold, while "Wide Awake" swings to a steady 4/4 beat of sober tradition. "The Madness of our Love," in 5/4 time, flows seamlessly with grace, while "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise" surprises with an unusual 7/4 meter. Bassist Ira Coleman gives away the riffed secret, as drummer Carl Allen tempers with crisp, percussive logic. Up-tempo and with Brazilian overtones, the arrangement serves to showcase Jannah’s scat singing alongside her lyric delivery. Caressing the lyric of "’Round Midnight," she tells a convincing story. Elsewhere, with other familiar standards, Denise Jannah treats each song with respect while interpreting lyrics and making sure that her audience will remember the enjoyable session. ~ Jim Santella  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=5726#.UkDGHRAkI5c

This native of Surinam (formerly Dutch Guyana) shows plenty of promise on her second CD for Timeless. Accompanied by an outstanding trio of Cyrus Chestnut, George Mraz and Billy Hart, with added percussion by Martin Verdonk and Lucas Van Merwijk, Jannah's bright lively vocal style sounds very fresh. She has a lot of fun with the uptempo chart of Steve Allen's "This Could Be the Start Of Something Big," while she's also adept at handling a slow ballad like "Detour Ahead" or a campy version of "Angel Eyes" that incorporates the theme from Mission: Impossible. Also of interest is "If The Music's Right" a samba that includes lyrics in Surinamese, Portugese and English, which Jannah carries off beautifully. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden
