On top of being a pianist, Karel is a very original composer as well. Over the years he has written quite a large repertoire of strongly individual originals. And I must say that it is through his original compositions that I hear most clearly what Karel wants to portray. To put it in words is not easy, so it seemed best to me to record it on my label, and share my enthusiasm with the listeners in this way. Our pal Hans van Oosterhout was excited as well and so we found a few free dates in our calendars. Lidwien Vork, the wonderful owner of the Beauforthuis in Austerlitz, was more than hospitable to have us come and record at her place. We recorded in the daytime, and invited some people as audience at night. Chris Weeda was our more than capable engineer. I must say I am happy, more than happy to present to you the musical world of one of my favourite pianists: Karel Boehlee. Enjoy!

Karel Boehlee is perhaps Holland's best-kept secret. I remember hearing him play in the early eighties, when I just returned from the United States. He was the first pianist of this kind of modern class I had ever heard in Holland. And on what level! Over the years Karel has improved and improved. The lines became more thoughtful, the harmony more precise; the rhythm was always very strong, but became larger, more in the pocket. Yet underneath all these ingredients there was always something more powerful: the sound! Karel's sound is unique; his touch just seems to reach you right in the centre of where music enters the soul. With impeccable taste Karel will always come up with something fresh, something his own and makes it sound so good.

So why is he a well kept secret? Well, Karel is a real player; he simply loves to go out and play. He will play with his old pals in little cafés, he will play with young and upcoming musicians, he will play with the best pop singers. Karel is a musician at heart. And the business doesn't know how to deal with this. The business wants exclusivity, wants to put a label on someone, wants an image. And somehow Karel is not playing that game. He is not chasing record deals; he is not showing his face at the right spots at the right time, he doesn't search for journalists to do interviews with him. He is busy doing what a musician should do: play music!

It takes people with a broader outlook to recognise Karel's sublimity. He has recorded seven CD's for a Japanese label; they keep coming back. Karel is the favourite pianist of the legendary Toots Thielemans. Karel is loved by wonderful Dutch pop singer Trijntje Oosterhuis, who will seek him out whenever there is a chance. Real people know that behind this humble appearance a great pianist is residing.~ Opiniones editoriales https://www.amazon.com/At-Beauforthuis-Karel-Trio-Boehlee/dp/B000TEK7GE

Maria Mendes - Close to Me

(3:18) 9. Tempo Emotivo
(5:03) 10. Asas Fechadas
(4:24) 11. E Se Não for Fado

A great affection for fado music and its poetic lyrics, an appreciation for how a jazz palette can color the form, and a love of orchestral seasonings all influence this expansive outing from Maria Mendes. It's an effort that's far from the norm and right where the Portuguese vocalist lives and loves to be.

Teaming up with pianist/arranger extraordinaire John Beasley, Mendes delivers originals, fado favorites, and, for good measure, a new number written for her by the great Hermeto Pascoal. Each piece has its own character, but they're all bound by a sense of longing that has long served as a foundational aspect of fado. Supported primarily by a combo including Beasley on keyboards, Karel Boehlee on piano, and Jasper van Hulten on drums, Mendes flys, sways and soothes. And regardless of where she finds herself in the 5/4 swing of "Tudo Isto É Fado," the sweeping atmosphere of "Dança do Amor," the vibrant and haunting spaces of "Verdes Anos," or the light-touch waltz of "Foi Deus" her voice complements the scenery.

While Mendes and the core band carry the album, and songs like the perky "Hermeto's Fado For Maria" and the aforementioned numbers show them to be a tight and sympathetic unit, additional personnel additions also prove valuable to the work. Vibraphonist Vincent Houdijk joins the vocalist, who's artfully overdubbed in places, for a winding duo performance on "Tempo Emotivo," and the Metropole Orkest appears on four tracks, giving the music a multi-hued complexion. A yearning sensibility underscores the rich sounds they add to songs like "Há Uma Música do Povo," which opens the album, and "Asas Fechadas," resting in the penultimate post.

While familiarity with fado, an understanding of the Portuguese language and an openness to cross-genre creations can enhance the experience of hearing this music, none are prerequisites for enjoyment. Priming need not be provided to understand the beauty of Close To Me.~Dan Bilawsky https://www.allaboutjazz.com/close-to-me-maria-mendes-justin-time-records

Toots Thielemans - European Quartet Live

Jean "Toots" Thielemans' musical education started early he had already started to play the accordion at the age of three. But it was his skill on the harmonica that brought him international fame, and it's that skill which is to the fore on European Quartet Live, featuring a set of well-known tunes taken from concerts in 2006, '07 and '08. It's the second Thielemans live album to be released in 2010 after The Live Takes, Volume 1 (In + Out Records), which was recorded in the '90s and with a different lineup of musicians, but it also includes versions of the first three tracks to be found on European Quartet Live. Thielemans was in his mid-80s when performing these concerts, but the precision and tone of his playing could well be that of a much younger musician. This is an album which has a comforting familiarity: a relaxed set that could have been recorded in a small club or even at a private party for friends, rather than in a series of concert halls. The European Quartet's other members give Thielemans sympathetic backing, the result, at least in part, of their long musical association. Drummer Hans van Oosterhout is particularly notable, providing subtle and inventive rhythms that are always interesting but never intrusive.

For the most part, these tunes are familiar, and the band's arrangements are mainstream beautifully played, but with no surprises. The songs are ideal for Thieleman's warm and romantic style, but his playing is especially suited to fellow-Belgian Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and Joseph Kosma and Jacques Prevert's Great American Songbook standard, "Les Feuilles Mortes," also known as "Autumn Leaves," in which the harmonicist closes with a bar or two of the French anthem, "La Marseillaise." The quartet's version of John Barry's theme to the film soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy (1969) on which Thielemans also played features a fine double-bass solo from Hein Van de Geyn, while on Thielemans' "Bluesette," the harmonicist adopts an accordion-like tone.

Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" and George Gershwin's "Summertime" are also treated imaginatively by the quartet. "Summertime" gets an upbeat, swinging arrangement, its opening bearing more than a passing resemblance to Miles Davis' "All Blues," with both Thielemans and pianist Karel Boehlee delivering positive solos. Thielemans performs "Round Midnight" unaccompanied, and it's an inspired take on this classic tune, showcasing the harmonicist's continued ability to play with empathy and emotion. The venues at which European Quartet Live was recorded are not identified, but their audiences all give the band an enthusiastic welcome, as if they are greeting old friends. In return, Thielemans and his band mates deliver what the audiences expect: classic tunes, played with warmth and enthusiasm.~ Bruce Lindsay https://www.allaboutjazz.com/european-quartet-live-toots-thielemans-challenge-records-review-by-bruce-lindsay.php

The music is a mixture of jazz-, classical- and popmusic, and therefore it is not a traditional jazztrio. It sounds very delicate and detailed, and yet the music is not complicated. The Karel Boehlee Trio plays jazzstandards, but also the standards from artists like Stevie Wonder and Donald Fagen. Karel Boehlee (April 23, 1960), a pianist and composer. From his youngest years Boehlee was a revelation in the Dutch jazz scene. From his birthplace he started from his 16th to play with various bands and jazz artists. His first records were an immediate success, especially in Japan. I also bought it caught in a jacket. Karel Boehlee's new score "Last Tango In Paris". It is feeling that it was fitted in the trap of Mr. Kimitsunobu (Kimata · Makoto) again this time. However, I am impressed with the work which I did well as usual. If you listen as BGM in mini-component etc., it becomes easy listening jazz, and when listening with facing the face with a reasonable expensive equipment it is made to be able to be touched by a lyrical phrase that is not covered with Boelly's dress It is.  "It does not get in the way even if it is flowing while doing something else, but listening comprehensively if you listen with having the intention to listen, listening comprehensive music."  This is the producer of Key 'Stone Music , Kimonosuke' s production attitude, so it is not exactly the music whose appearance such as this work appeared virtually. As for the previous work, "Blue Prelude", I wrote it in my blog before, so please come here.

That's why, like M & I's work so far, it is a work fascinated by Lyricism, which is very fresh and transparent. As with pure water from which all minerals and impurities are removed through a reverse osmosis membrane filter, there is no wasteful decorating technique and no complicated constitution at all, only to clearly and transparently beautiful sound, melody played only to that one point Boierie's aesthetic sense concentrates on the appearance of not only jazz fans but also the universality of music accepted by every music fans. As before, the members are Hein Van de Geyn (Hain van der Gain) and drums Hans Van Osterhout (Hans van Osta Houtou). Although the title is "Last Tango In Paris", it is not a collection of Tango songs. It consists of less familiar musical songs, movie music, classics and more. This time the original Boeley is only one song and less. Personally I am sorry a little because there is attachment to the original of Boelly. I purchased this disc about 3 days ago and I listen to it everyday, but I feel it gradually. It is good feeling. His work always seems, but at first it does not come with pins, but as he listens, his distinctive beauty melody emerges as if it emerges and stimulates my sentimental center. It would be something I did if I did. "If you listen carefully, as it is, concentrate and listen, it resonates properly in your heart." Is not it an excellent work that was given such a mechanism? https://translate.google.com.br/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://blog.goo.ne.jp/crissmorgan/e/1653e3d0cbc1d7fdcea1e374892ca487&prev=search
