The music of composer and guitarist Paul Nash reflects a restless commitment to musical experimentation integrating by turns the sound worlds of jazz, classical, and rock through his own personal synthesis. Nash’s musical path began in the late 60’s when his Bronx teenage rock band opened for the Blues Project and followed a then unknown Jimi Hendrix at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village. This was followed by years of music study earning respectively B.M. and M.A. degrees in music composition from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972 and Mills College in Oakland (CA) in 1976. San Francisco provided a fruitful outlet for his passion for larger jazz aggregations. In 1977, the ten-piece Paul Nash Ensemble, which featured saxophonist Noel Jewkes, drummer Eddie Marshall and trumpeter Mark Isham, began performances around the Bay Area and in Los Angeles. Later, Nash became instrumental in the creation of the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra (BAJCO), a new type of jazz orchestra that included a string quartet founded in 1987. Upon his return to New York City, Mr. Nash expanded on that same instrumental model by establishing the Manhattan New Music Project in 1990. Nash’s interest in classical forms has evolved alongside his work in jazz. Among the music groups that have performed Nash’s chamber and orchestral pieces have been the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble, the Aspen Music Festival, the Chamber Symphony of San Francisco, the San Francisco Symphony, the Reading Symphony Orchestra (PA) and Ridgefield (CT) Symphonies is scheduled in 2002. Musical Elements, and Composers Concordance and Eclectix.

As a leader, Nash has produced five impressive recordings including three for Soul Note Records (Italy), which have featured jazz artists such as Tom Harrell, Jack Walrath, Tom Varner, David Samuels, Mark Isham, and Art Lande. Paul Nash: A Jazz Composers Ensemble (1979), Second Impression (1985), Night Language (1987), Mood Swing (1993) and Soul of Grace (2000). His jazz writing suggests somewhat contradictory influences, most notably the cool orchestration of Gil Evans and the fiery proclamations of Charles Mingus. Projects slated for publication in print include Fingerstyle Jazz Workbook (Mel Bay Music) and Jazz Duos for alto sax and piano (Advance Music). An accomplished guitarist, Mr. Nash's musical thinking is also distinguished by his adoption of system of a symmetrical tuning in fourths as well as his use of custom designed acoustic and electric seven string guitars. In 1997 Nash began a new musical direction with the creation of site-specific musical work, culminating in a series of nine special performances in New York City parks. His Still Sounds Run Deep deploys musicians around public spaces and provides for interactivity with ambient sounds and the rhythms of passersby. Another long standing goal was realized in the his hour long theater creation, Intimate Structures, fashioning a dialogue adapted from Lovers’ Discourse by the late French philosopher Roland Barthes, and supporting it with an hour of continuous music blending baroque, modern jazz and ambient sounds. Grants and fellowships have served as a vital support for Nash’s work, coming from sources such as the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Jerome Foundation, the Banff Center for the Arts, Yaddo, Meet the Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, the University of California at Berkeley, the MacDowell Colony, and the Djerassi Foundation. Finally, Nash has been an arts advocate as well, serving as a nationally elected Board Member of the American Composers Alliance. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/paulnash

(8:49)  8. Scrapple From The Apple

Louis Smith’s Louisville (Steeplechase) is a no-frills, straightahead exercise in postbop. Smith and altoist Jon Gordon provide an excellent front line, with tight playing on heads, backed effectively by pianist Michael Cochrane, bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. The tune selections show imagination, from the neglected (Charlie Parker’s “Buzzy”) to the familiar (“Scrapple From the Apple”) to the in-between (Dizzy Gillespie’s “Algo Bueno,” better known as “Woody ‘n’ You”). Smith has a penchant for ballads with interesting changes (“For All We Know” and “I’ll Close My Eyes”), including a reverent reading of Billy Strayhorn’s lovely “Isfahan.” The lone original is Smith’s “Ande,” an uptempo reworking of the changes to “Indiana” that allows him to show that at 73 he’s lost none of his fluidity, none of his improvisational skill and none of his ability to swing at any tempo. ~ Harve Siders https://jazztimes.com/reviews/briefs/louis-smith-quintet-louisville/

Wonderfully warm work from the great Michael Cochrane a pianist we always love, and who also seems to be playing a bit of Fender Rhodes on this album too! The instrument's not credited on the back, but turns up in an excellent version of Denny Zeitlin's "Quiet Now" which is handled by Cochrane with just the right sort of space and tone to really open up the composition in a way that's very different from the bolder, more soulful tones the pianist uses throughout the rest of the album. As always with a record from Michael, the original tunes are some of the best and include "Discovery", "MC's Bossa", "Erie Blues", and "Fantasy"all the kind of numbers that always have us digging for his records whenever we get the chance. Other tunes include "Oblivion", "Yesterdays", and "Visitation" and the trio includes Daryl Johns on bass and Steve Johns on drums. © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/778332

On Gesture of Faith, veteran Cochrane demonstrates a direct, fat-free linear style with a hint of Bill Evans in his chord voicings. Eddie Gomez’s walking and crosscutting bass lines provide another source of interest and delight, as does Alan Nelson’s drumming. “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” swings cleanly as the trio exhibits the art of interplay as well as more traditional lead and support roles. Cochrane’s chordal exposition of “Invitation” is rich and exotic. In addition to Cochrane’s skill, this album reminds us again that Gomez is one of jazz’s top bassists. ~ Owen Cordle https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/michael-cochrane-gesture-of-faith/

Michael Cochrane is one of many American jazz musicians who has had far greater exposure working for European-based labels than he has in his homeland. This trio date with bassist Calvin Hill and drummer Jeff Hirschfield is an enjoyable session, focusing exclusively on nine originals by the leader. "Sit and Wait" is a fine opener, in the mold of Bud Powell and Duke Jordan. "The Seeker" begins in a pensive mood before transforming into a lively mid-tempo waltz with an infectious vamp. The breezy "New Samba" showcases Hill's fluid bass, in addition to the leader. The brisk "Ballad for Old Times Sake" blends elements of hard bop and Latin rhythm into an infectious groove, while "Early Bird" sounds as if it could have been written during the '50s heyday of bop. ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/right-now-mw0000581185

Michael Cochrane Quartet - Cutting Edge

His resume is an imposing one, marked by gigs with Sonny Fortune, Jack Walrath, Eddie Gomez, Clark Terry, Michael Brecker, Chip White, the Spirit of Life Ensemble, Nancy Monroe, and many more. Add to that beneficial training from the likes of Jaki Byard, Eleanor Hancock and the legendary Madame Chaloff. This gives you just a simple point of reference for approaching the work of pianist Michael Cochrane, whose debut SteepleChase set, The Cutting Edge is just now getting an American release. While not without its moments of collective risk-taking, this set falls into the category of conservative mainstream fare that SteepleChase is known for and in Cochrane they have a solid pianist who has learned his lessons well. He certainly knows how to pace a set, the ten selections including some top-drawer standards and four of his own well-developed lines. Cochrane, bassist Ron McClure, and drummer Yoron Israel go it as a trio for Bud Powell’s “Celia” and “I Thought About You,” while the rest of the date features the lead voice of alto saxophonist David Gross.

A new name to this reviewer, Gross speaks volumes with a tart yet seductive tone that puts him in the same league with fellow alto man Jon Gordon. In the final analysis, everything sits just right with The Cutting Edge, even if doesn’t quite live up to the implications of its title. ~ C.Andrew Hovan https://www.allaboutjazz.com/cutting-edge-michael-cochrane-steeplechase-records-review-by-c-andrew-hovan.php
