A major jazz and swing singer, Susie Meissner always seems to have a smile in her voice. In addition to her very appealing tone and impeccable musicianship, the enthusiasm that she displays when she performs is infectious. She always swings and is an excellent improviser yet the lyrics that she interprets are very important to her. "When I perform a song," says Susie, "I want to express the emotions of the words so the listener is experiencing the lyrics the way that the writer intended. I'm never casual about the lyrics." Her skill at reviving and revitalizing classic songs is very much in evidence throughout her finest recording, Tea For Two.

Since the New York-based Susie Meissner also performs regularly in Philadelphia, particularly at Chris' Jazz Café, for her latest recording she decided to feature some of Philly's best jazz musicians along with a few guests. Heard along the way are such greats as tenor-saxophonist Larry McKenna (a Philadelphia legend), valve trombonist John Swana, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, guitarist Paul Meyers and clarinetist Ken Peplowski plus the superb rhythm section of pianist John Shaddy, bassist Lee Smith and drummer Dan Monaghan.

Bug Music is a tribute to the music of the Raymond Scott Quintette, the John Kirby Sextet and Duke Ellington, headed by the remarkably versatile clarinetist Don Byron. Raymond Scott's legendary compositions feature eccentric song titles (including, on this set, "Siberian Sleighride," "Tobacco Auctioneer" and "War Dance for Wooden Indians"), complex and thoroughly composed arrangements (all of which were originally memorized rather than being written out) and unique melodies. Kirby's brand of swing, which is quite complementary to Scott's novelties, often utilized themes from classical music and had solos, but were also tightly arranged (even "St. Louis Blues" and "Royal Garden Blues"). The CD begins and ends with four Ellington/Strayhorn pieces that fit well into the idiom (particularly "The Dicty Glide" and "Cotton Club Stomp"). In addition to Byron, the key players on the project include altoist Steve Wilson (one of the best of the younger swing stylists), trombonist Craig Harris and pianist Uri Caine, in addition to four other horns and several rhythm sections. Other than a silly rendition of Ellington's "Blue Bubbles" and an adventurous interpretation of "Snibor," the selections are played with respect and great understanding of the somewhat forgotten style. Vocalist/pianist Andy Bey is in fine form on Tuesdays in Chinatown, the third installment in a comeback series that began in 1995 with Ballads, Blues & Bey and continued with 1998's Shades of Bey. Here Bey continues to explore fairly eclectic repertoire. His jazz roots are well represented with standards such as "I'll Remember April," "Invitation," "Little Girl Blue," and "Just Friends." There are also two beautiful songs by Milton Nascimento, "Bridges" and "Saidas e Bandeiras" (the latter sung in Portuguese), as well as a (so-so) cover of Sting's "Fragile." Bey's vocal is entirely wordless on the Bix Beiderbecke composition "In a Mist," one of the disc's more ambitious undertakings. The best cuts, however, are the first and the last: first, the lush and mellow title track, featuring John Sneider on flügelhorn; last, Big Bill Broonzy's "Feelin' Lowdown," a self-accompanied slow blues that showcases Bey's gift to full effect. Bey is backed mainly by bassist Peter Washington and drummer Victor Lewis, with guitarist Paul Meyers playing a major role on four tracks. Appearing as guests are Ron Carter, Marty Ehrlich, Steve Turre, Earl Gardner, Mino Cinelu, and more. Geri Allen crafted the horn arrangements; one only wishes there were more of them. ~David R. Louise Rogers proves absolutely infectious with her delightful vocals. Her expressive voice, playful scatting, and crystal-clear intonation strike the listener right off the bat. Her core group includes Rick Strong (her husband) on bass and Mathias Kunzli on drums, with pianist Matthew Fries, guitarist Paul Meyers, and saxophonist Gottfired Stoger added on a few tracks. Rogers and Strong wrote a hip tune to accompany poet Nikki Giovanni's "Be My Baby," with Kunzli's hand percussion initially serving as her sole accompaniment, adding the bass after the first chorus and scatting up a storm with it in octave unison. Jerry Bergonzi's melancholy "Conjunction" benefits from her hopeful lyrics. Rogers wrote both the words and music to the soft bossa nova "Shadows of Yesterday." Stoger's tense "Poetic Song" features demanding unison lines by the singer and saxophonist. Rogers also finds a fresh approach to the standard "The Song Is You" (adding Stoger on soprano sax) and a playful duet with Strong of the forgotten chestnut "Louise." But the biggest surprise is her setting of a traditional Celtic song, "Lass from the Low Countree," a haunting duet with Strong on electric bass. Featuring the seventeen-minute "Homage Concerto For Clarinet And Jazz Orchestra" with Loren Schoenberg's big band backing clarinetist Ken Peplowski, this session is well-balanced, with four numbers by the leader's small group and four with the large ensemble. Peplowski plays clarinet on three tracks; tenor saxophone on the other four. His experience with the Tommy Dorsey ghost orchestra under Buddy Morrow's direction, working some with Benny Goodman, and more recently with Rosemary Clooney, Mel Torme, and as a duo with Howard Alden, has gained the clarinetist considerable exposure; this is his fourteenth Concord Records album as a leader. On tenor saxophone, Peplowski maintains a quiet posture on "Luck Be A Lady" and "I've Never Been In Love Before." The latter is arranged by guitarist James Chirillo, includes Schoenberg's big band, and features a delightful bass clarinet solo by Danny Bank. 

Bassist Greg Cohen composed "Dream Theme" with the random qualities of a stereotypical dream in mind; it features Peplowski's dreamy tenor, the composer's lyrical bass solo, and pianist Ben Aronov's dreamy keyboard work as well. The "Homage Concerto for Clarinet and Jazz Orchestra" in three movements was written by Chirillo and naturally infuses a classical bent. The names of each movement, "Swing," "Elegy," and "Driving," give one a feel for what is being accomplished. It is Peplowski's strong point, and the big band backs him capably. Duke Ellington's "Purple Gazelle" finds guest tenorist Loren Schoenberg beside the quartet of clarinetist Peplowski, pianist Aronov, bassist Cohen, and drummer Chuck Redd. With a Latin rhythm and a unique Monkish piano outing, the clarinet and tenor saxophone trade phrases and work very well together. The full orchestra returns for the final track, Duke Ellington's arrangement of "Royal Garden Blues." John di Martino is a New York area based pianist, composer, arranger and Venus recording artist. He is a sought after musical director and is in demand by many singers as an accompanist, having accompanied such singers as Jon Hendricks, Sylvia Sims, Diane Schuur and Billy Eckstine. His talents as a pianist and arranger can be heard on recordings with Freddy Cole, Gloria Lynne and Grady Tate. Noted for his versatility, di Martino has also performed and recorded with such notables as Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Lovano, the late David "Fathead" Newman, Pat Martino, Paquito D'Rivera and Houston Person. Di Martino was a long time member of Ray Barretto's "New World Spirit" group and he was a featured pianist and arranger on several recording including Barretto's Grammy-nominated CD, Contact! (Blue Note, 1997). He also enjoyed a long association with percussionist Bobby Sanabria and can be heard on Sanabria's Grammy-nominated CD Afro-Cuban Dream: Live And In Clave (Arabesque, 2000). Count Paul Meyers among those relatively few jazz guitarists who concentrate on playing a nylon-string instrument. Assembling a terrific band for these sessions, including veteran bandleader and Basie alum Frank Wess on tenor sax and flute, bassist Martin Wind (a leader as well and regular collaborator with pianist Bill Mays), and drummer Tony Jefferson, Meyers includes a mix of standards, originals, and well-known jazz compositions. Oddly enough, the bluesy opener, "Snibor," is not one of Billy Strayhorn's more widely played works (though Duke Ellington fans will be familiar with it), but the light, swinging treatment with Wind's intricate solo, Wess' robust tenor, and the leader's subtle playing signals immediately that this is an impressive outing. All of the standards shine, including the breezy setting of "Just One of Those Things" with engaging features for Meyers and Wess; the warm rendition of "Lazy Afternoon" with guest vocalist Andy Bey; and the gorgeous "My One and Only Love," which opens as a duo by Wess and Meyers with a delayed entrance by the rhythm section. Wess contributed "Menage a Bleu," a tasty blues that sounds like the perfect wrap-up for a late-night club date. Meyers penned a pair of originals, "Blue Lantern," a pulsating vehicle featuring Wess' spirited flute and Meyers' cooking guitar, and the choppy, infectious "One for Miss D." It must be one of the most pure ways to improvise: the duet. Call and respond are the basic elements of jazz music, born a century ago ..... The music of nylon-string acoustic guitarist Paul Meyers isn't easily classifiable, as it has elements of several Brazilian styles, along with both straight-ahead and contemporary jazz. His rhythm section includes two Brazilians, pianist Helio Alves, and drummer/percussionist Vanderlei Pereira (who is also a fine guitarist, though he sticks to drums in these sessions), plus saxophonist Donny McCaslin, and electric bassist Leo Traversa. For example, the opener, the chestnut "I've Got the World on a String," alternates styles and rhythms in an eclectic setting, ending in mid-phrase. The Beatles' "Because" is not commonly heard in a jazz setting, but Meyers' unusual reharmonization makes it work. The remaining tunes are all Meyers' originals. The infectious "Panama" was recorded in 1989 by Gary Burton with Pat Metheny; here Pereira does double duty on percussion and marimba, with the leader adding a guitar synth pickup for a portion of the piece. Meyers' chops are best displayed in the trio setting of "Plum," which blends his intricate solo with the constantly shifting bass and drums. In essence, WORLD ON A STRING is Brazilian music, but with a decidedly personal twist. Equally conversant in straight ahead jazz and Brazilian music, guitarist Paul Meyers has shared the bandstand with the likes of Kenny Barron, Andy Bey, Jon Hendricks, Frank Wess and Wynton Marsalis while also being active on the Brazilian scene in New York.
