Lorraine Klaasen is certainly one of the best, if not deepest-rooted South African song stylists to come down the pike since the legendary Miriam Makeba. With the passing of Makeba, Klaasen carries the torch for both the aforementioned icon, and also for her famous mother, Thandie Klaasen. Helping is guitarist Mongezi Chris Ntaka (formerly with Lucky Dube) and bassist Bakithi Kumalo (with Dube and on Paul Simon's Graceland album) adding pure authenticity to the proceedings. While the music is in the Afro-pop realm, it touches on sotho funk, kwela, zulu, and xhosa aspects of village life while adding dance beats and feelings of triumph, with Klaasen singing in either African or English lyrics. There's the electricity of "Ziyaduma," with a pure beat reflecting the duality of representing thunder and the fact that it's all happening in the moment, while the modern modal popping rhythms infused in "Imbizo" bridge the gap between modern and traditional. Klaasen herself is effervescent, a driven vocalist who minces very few lyric lines with sentimentality, although she does offer occasional tender moments. She's driven to deliver the message for the most part, chanting with the group vocalists during the mixed and separate polyrhythms of "La Reine/The Queen," dancing in retro-disco fashion on "Spring in Every Season," or offering the celebratory wedding song "Jabulani" not Abdullah Ibrahim's composition of the same name. Africa Calling is a joy to hear from start to finish, a fully realized project, universally understandable, good for any party, ready to steal your heart and soul with a running start. ~ Michael G.Nastos https://www.allmusic.com/album/africa-calling-mw0001961864

She was born in South Africa, grew up in the Azores and was discovered in Lisbon. She wanted to be a teacher, a veterinarian, and became a doctor. But fate found it. And she found Fado. Work of fate? It is her conviction that she exists and is attentive to it. So she does not make plans, she lets life happen to her. It was for this confidence that she waited for the right moment. The moment when all the elements were aligned, in the same rhythm, in the same poetry, in the same passion. She waited for the poems. She waited for the music. She waited for everyone with whom she wanted to go the long, long wished path, long prepared. The themes have been collected over the years. From inside the drawer that is her heart, they left to be sung with the emotion that characterizes it. There were many, the choice was difficult, but the 12 elected represent the new Katia Guerreiro, whom in recent years has prepared for this now. At her side, Tiago Bettencourt, "a passionate fado who besides being an excellent musician is also a friend", assured the production and musical direction of the project, but also wrote, solo and in partnership, some of the songs. Always with her, João Veiga, Pedro Castro, Luis Guerreiro and Francisco Gaspar, the musicians who have long been following his fado. To these were added other, bigger names of Portuguese music, such as Professor Joel Pina, Pedro Jóia, André Ramos, Artur Caldeira. In the authorship there are 20 names. Some in absolute debut, others in posthumous honor. All in harmony, Until the End. (Translated from Portuguese.)

Long based in Montreal, singer Lorraine Klaasen continues to make music primarily influenced by her native land of South Africa (she was born in Soweto). She won a 2013 Juno Award for World Music album of the Year for her Tribute to Miriam Makeba, a prime influence (as is famed singer Thandie Klaasen, her mother).
Her latest, Nouvelle Journée, is a truly multilingual album, with songs sung in English, French and South African languages Tsonga, Sotho, IsiZulu and Xhosa. It initially sounds a touch odd to hear a South African-flavoured song done in French, as on the title track, and to these ears, it's the more overtly South African tunes that work best.
Klaasen has a fluent and melodic vocal style, and she's aided by an A-list cast of world music players and fine production by guitarist Mongezi Ntaka. There is a real social conscience evident in such material as "Izani Nonke" and the anti-greed ballad "Where To Now," a song Klaasen wrote 30 years ago that sadly remains relevant today. Strong messages are found within this sweetly rhythmic material, confirming the ongoing appeal of music with a townships vibe.

In his home country of South Africa, singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlasela is fondly known as "The Voice." His fellow countrywoman, the writer Nadine Gordimer, once said about him: "Vusi Mahlasela sings as a bird does: in total response to being alive." Apart from his remarkable songwriting talent, Mahlasela is in fact blessed with one of the most remarkable voices in contemporary popular music. Vusi Mahlasela grew up listening to people singing in his grandmother's shebeen (an informal pub in South African townships) and taught himself while playing the guitar. As a teenager, he started writing his own songs with lyrics of social significance. In 1981, he joined the poetry group Ancestors of Africa, who were on the watch list of the Apartheid regime. His joining of the Congress of South African Writers in 1988 marks a new quality in his artistical maturing process. Besides starting a collaboration with South African dub poet Lesego Rampolokeng, he explored South African jazz and traditional music as well as the work of Chilean songwriter Victor Jara, who in his own opinion was his strongest influence. His first international performance in London (1990) made him more popular overseas than back home. Consequently, his debut album, When You Come Back (1992), a tribute to the political exiles of South Africa, catapulted him to instant fame in Europe and North America. Nowadays, it is considered a South African classic. Wisdom of Forgiveness, the 1994 successor, was an equally strong effort. The album title nicely summarized the political approach taken by the new democratic South African government: not revenge, but forgiveness was the strategy of the new era. Extensive touring was the reason that Mahlasela's next album, Silang Mabele, was only released at the end of 1997. The message of this album was clear: the time of singing praise songs is over, now let's make this new country work. The live set, Vusi Mahlasela & Louis Mhlanga Live at the Bassline (1999) captured a sizzling performance with one of his longterm collaborators and friends, guitarist Louis Mhlanga, stripped down to two guitars. In 2002, Vusi Mahlasela also appeared in Lee Hirsch's acclaimed documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony which examined the role of music in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. The compilation The Voice (2003) which Mahlasela himself handpicked for listeners in North America, marked his official record debut in the U.S.. To celebrate the twenty year anniversary of When You Come Back, the album that brought him onto a world stage in 1992, Vusi assembled his band and threw a concert at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg in 2012, performing several of his signature songs in front of an enthusiastic and very involved audience, and the whole affair was recorded and released as a live set, Sing to the People, early in 2013. ~ Frank Eisenhuth https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/the-voice/id252021518

Hugh Masekela has an extensive jazz background and credentials, but has enjoyed major success as one of the earliest leaders in the world fusion mode. Masekela's vibrant trumpet and flügelhorn solos have been featured in pop, R&B, disco, Afro-pop, and jazz contexts. He's had American and international hits, worked with bands around the world, and played with African, African-American, European, and various American musicians during a stellar career. His style, especially on flügelhorn, is a charismatic blend of striking upper-register lines, half-valve effects, and repetitive figures and phrases, with some note bending, slurs, and tonal colors. Though he's often simplified his playing to fit into restrictive pop formulas, Masekela is capable of outstanding ballad and bebop work. He began singing and playing piano as a child, influenced by seeing the film Young Man with a Horn at 13. Masekela started playing trumpet at 14. He played in the Huddleston Jazz Band, which was led by anti-apartheid crusader and group head Trevor Huddleston. Huddleston was eventually deported, and Masekela co-founded the Merry Makers of Springs along with Jonas Gwangwa. He later joined Alfred Herbert's Jazz Revue, and played in studio bands backing popular singers. Masekela was in the orchestra for the musical King Kong, whose cast included Miriam Makeba. He was also in the Jazz Epistles with Abdullah Ibrahim, Makaya Ntshoko, Gwanga, and Kippie Moeketsi. Masekela and Makeba, his wife at that time, left South Africa one year before Ibrahim and Sathima Bea Benjamin in 1961. Such musicians as Dizzy Gillespie, John Dankworth, and Harry Belafonte assisted him. Masekela studied at the Royal Academy of Music, then the Manhattan School of Music. During the early '60s, his career began to explode. He recorded for MGM, Mercury, and Verve, developing his hybrid African/pop/jazz style. Masekela moved to California and started his own record label, Chisa. He cut several albums expanding this formula and began to score pop success. The song "Grazing in the Grass" topped the charts in 1968 and eventually sold four million copies worldwide. That year Masekela sold out arenas nationwide during his tour, among them Carnegie Hall. He recorded in the early '70s with Monk Montgomery & the Crusaders. Masekela moved in a more ethnic direction during the '70s. He traveled to London to play with Nigerian Afro-beat great Fela Kuti & Africa 70; then came a session with Dudu Pukwana, Eddie Gomez, and Ntshoko, among others, that resulted in his finest jazz/African album, Home Is Where the Music Is. Masekela toured Guinea with the Ghanian Afro-pop band Hedzoleh Soundz, then recorded a series of albums with them both in California and Africa with guest stints from the Crusaders, Patti Austin, and others. Masekela alternated between America and Africa, cutting a successful pop/dance album with Herb Alpert in the late '70s. During the '80s, Masekela returned to South Africa. He visited Zimbabwe and Botswana, and recorded two albums with the Kalahari Band that once more merged jazz-rock, funk, and pop. Masekela was part of Paul Simon's Graceland tour in the mid-'80s, while he continued recording and produced sessions by Makeba. Starting in the mid-'90s, Masekela began releasing a stream of albums and collections that showed his versatility and growth in South African jazz. He continued to be active into the first decade of the 21st century, issuing Live at the Market Theatre in 2007, Phola in 2009, and a pair of albums in 2012, Friends (with Larry Willis) and Jabulani, inspired by South African wedding traditions Masekela remembered from his childhood. Though the jazz content of his work has varied over the years, Hugh Masekela has far more material on the plus side than the negative. ~ bio by Ron Wynn

Lokua Kanza has one of the most exceptional voices of Africa. It has a clarity that rings out, calls you from what you're doing and begs you to sit down and listen. His last album, released in 2001, was a piece of work that was close to perfect. Toyebi Te brought Lokua's home country of Congo to the listener in powerful and touching songs, spiced with intricate rhythms tapped out on bottles and call-and-response vocals, in his mother tongue of Lingala. With his children speaking amid the melodies and the sound of the rain coming down, it was a genuine work of art. Four years later, Lokua has brought out Plus Vivantwhichprompts me to ask, what has happened to his Africa? Plus Vivant is a fifteen-track album of guitar introspections; some done in an R&B style ("Le monde est fou"), some haunting acoustic ballads ("Mal a dire"), and some upbeat tracks, which point towards the Congolese style without being overpowering. There's some beautiful piano, some exceptional guitar solos and it's all very pleasant. However, it isn't until track seven, "Laisse moi le temps". that I begin to remember the Lokua of Toyebi Te and I find myself up and moving to this uplifting, finely arranged and rhythmically interesting song.
The unknown percussion instrument sounds like something beating against a tin roof, the electric guitar resounds like a smile, and the smooth voice of Lokuapulls the whole thing together. The album only peaks like this again in a duet with French R&B singer Corneille, but this is quite a collaboration, and their voices do each other justice in the way that others can only dream of. There's also a thirty two second snippet of something magical, "Piololo", that comes in so briefly with its chimes and humming vocals that it's gone before I can say Toyebi Te.Still, if there are moments when I wonder why Lokua has recorded an album entirely in French, all is redeemed by the sound of his voice. It is as vibrant as ever, allowing me to think of him still as the voice of the African continent. ~ Rose Skelton http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/9vw6

For more than 25 years Barbora Tellinger has been a professional singer, composer, teacher, voice artist and actress throughout Southern Africa, on stages and in studios, in musicals, cabaret, pop, rock and jazz bands.
Her career began in the protest theatre days of the Black Sun in 1980s Johannesburg, moved through the revolutionary Afrikaans Voelvry movement, onto the famous NO.58 in Hillbrow, enjoyed many collaborations with some of the country’s finest musicians and has been focused on jazz and education since 2005.
She has performed on stages from Cape Town to Windhoek, NAPAC, PACT the Civic, The State Theatre, CAPAB and PACOFS, Ellis Park and the Sun City Superbowl.
It might be quicker here to name the musicians she hasn’t worked with, and easier to name the studios she hasn’t worked in.
Apart from the many recordings with other artists, personal studio projects include a solo album – Barbie and the Dolls, BLOMKRAG – Boere Country, and two albums of Deep Fine Leg, an accoustic harmony ensemble.
For three years she was jazz vocal lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology School of Music, and has been teaching at the University of Pretoria since 2008.
A respected singer and vocal coach, her non-contrived vocal technique has been adopted by many professionals and teachers throughout Southern Africa and beyond. Her passion for jazz has made her an effective teacher with several successful jazz graduates now working in the music industry. She has also trained numerous recording and theatrical artists.
In 2012 she released the album – Live at the Musaion, a Jazz Recital. Collaborating with some of the greats – John Fresk, Marc Duby, Rob Watson – it cemented her reputation as a formidable force in the South African jazz arena.
The following year brought her next album – Jazz, Live 2012.
In 2014 she completed a studio album with her pianist of preference, John Fresk. Tellinger & Fresk, DEUCE, is available through iTunes and at live performances.

Zim Ngqawana is one of South Africa's leading jazz musicians. In addition to leading his own band, Ingoma, Ngqawana has played with such influential jazz musicians as Max Roach, Keith Tippett, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Hugh Masakela and with top-notch modern dance ensembles, the Free Flight Dance Company and the Moving Into Dance Company. South African daily newspaper the Star referred to Ngqawana as "the most visible, hardest working, younger man in jazz."
The youngest of five children, Ngqawana didn't begin playing the flute until the age of 21. He advanced quickly on the instrument. Although he left school before completing the university entrance requirements, his obvious talents enabled him to be accepted to Rhodes University. He subsequently earned a diploma in jazz studies from the University of Natal. While performing with the University of Natal's jazz ensemble, the Jazzanians, at the International Association of Jazz Educator's convention, he attracted the attention of American jazz musicians Max Roach and Wynton Marsalis. With their encouragement and support, he received a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts, where he studied with Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef.
Returning to South Africa, Ngqawana performed with bands led by Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masakela. In 1995, Ngqawana toured North America with his band, Ingoma, featuring pianist Andile Yenana. Ngqawana recorded his first two solo albums, San Song and Zimology, in Oslo, Norway, with Yenana and Norwegian musicians Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Paal Nilssan-Love on drums. Norwegian saxophonist Bjorn Ole Solberg was featured on San Song. Ngqawana recorded his third album, Ingoma, in South Africa with his band. ~ by Craig Harris

Since returning from touring Europe at the end of 2009 where Ike also shot the music video for STARRY NIGHT (youtube) he has now completed his 8th studio album entitled ‘Blue Moon’. The album contains 16 smooth & jazzy crooners/torch songs from well known hits like ‘What a Wonderful World’, ‘Besame Mucho’ and ‘Summertime’ to jazzy adaptions of John Lennon’s ‘Nowhere Man’, Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Moon’ and Dean Martin’s ‘Mean To Me’. It ends with a bonus track, namely Ike’s version of the famous James Bond movie title hit song ‘From Russia With Love’. Like on his previous Jazz/Swing albums Ike has once again recorded with multitalented SA navy big band leader Willie van Zyl (saxophones, clarinet) and UK pianist A.McPike.

Remarkable South African vocalist Sani Gamedze tells us a very personal story about her life in South Africa and Sweden by way of songs strongly connected to her past, using the colours of the rainbow as a spiritual and musical guidance. 'Colourmeover' presents her most personal approach to these songs - carefully selected gems of jazz, soul and pop - coupled with her sparkling vocals and poetic narration - brings rare depth to the listener's musical journey. Silva Records proudly presents one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated Jazz vocalists, Brigitte Mitchell, whom offers an array of delightful and sensual standards, exhibiting her versatility with a daring grace. Hits on this release include timeless Billie Holiday classics, God Bless The Child and the title track Don’t Explain, plus a toe-tapping, swing interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s Another Star. OTher tracks include re-imagined Jazz standards such as Horace Silver’s Doodlin’ and Nica’s Dream, as well as a haunting rendition of evergreen My Favourite Things.
Originally from the scenic shores of Cape Town, Mitchell has been living in Hong Kong for the past 10 years. She had an undeniable urge to explore an artistic path of unknown proportions, sparking this migration from South Africa to Asia. The move has offered a sense of creative liberation. “Taking that step to leave my comfort zone was one of the best decisions I’ve made,” she recounts fondly.
Growing up a witness to the diverse conditions in South Africa, she came to Asia aspiring to personify the change her father wanted to see for the people of Cape Town. By making a name for herself on new ground, she cultivated her father’s vision and she confidently asserts the importance of his advice, “He really insisted on this, try and reach your highest potential and become the best version of yourself.” And her record is certainly indicative of this mind set.
Mitchell has established herself as a headliner Jazz singer, known for her spontaneous and captivating live performances. Don’t Explain is made up of selections from her live show repertoire. “This is how I wanted to feel and sound. Ultimately, I grew into Jazz because I let it take hold of me.” The record is a time capsule that represents not only the magic of a live performance, but also the culmination of Mitchell’s decade-long experimentation and love affair with Jazz.
Don’t Explain showcases Mitchell’s multidimensional vocals in a variety of musical settings. She is backed by a core rhythmic section that she has worked with over the years made up of New York Jazz pianist Bob Mocarsky, Hong Kong veteran Rudy Balbuena on upright bass, and drummer Gary Da Silva, who is also Mitchell’s husband and the record’s Executive Producer. The album also features a number of guest artists, including Australian sax star Blaine Whittaker, Los Angeles pianist Bobby West (Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye), Australian trumpeter Toby Mak, Hong Kong producer and guitarist Tommy Ho, LA tenor saxophonist Albert Wing and Brazilian saxophonist Paulo Levi. Mitchell sweetly praises her colleagues, “Each musician has given a piece of themselves.”
Don’t Explain is just the beginning of Mitchell’s recording career. She says, “I come from such a wide range of musical interests. I hope to explore and continue to grow in new directions.”

Ike Moriz takes the Blues to South Africa & brings it back to the world with a fresh new face! Since releasing his latest album in 2012, South Africa's international singing sensation Ike Moriz has written exciting new material in the blues rock genre for his 14th studio album to date - the title: 'AT LAST'. Moriz has taken the blues 'To Cape Town' - his home of choice (and the title of one of his new songs) at the southernmost tip of Africa where he rounded up some of the best musical talent the country has to offer to create his version of classic blues. Inspired by his recent marriage, the birth of his daughter and his tour through Southern Europe & Northern Africa, he has crafted an array of songs reflecting these experiences of the past 2 years.
The album opens with a song that already sounds like it could be a classic blues standard: 'The Devil Is Real In Your Mind'. Minimalist, clear & strong lyrics with a highly dynamic arrangement to get Ike's message across. The song is followed by the aforementioned 'To Cape Town', an upbeat blues folk/rock song about arriving in Ike's hometown - one of the most beautiful cities in the world. If you are looking for Ike's typical tongue-in-cheek stories, then look out for 'Think I'm A Millionaire', 'Disillusion Blues' and 'Until Their Lights Are Out (Alien Blues)'.
Besides his original songs we can also find a couple of covers in fresh new arrangements like Horace Silver's classic jazzy 'Señor Blues' with slightly altered lyrics to fit ike's message, as well as Gershwin's Porgy & Bess rebel 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. Moriz also breathes new life into the 1952 Elvis hit 'Hound Dog' and Hoagy Carmichael's standard 'Georgia On My Mind' with the incredibly gifted navy big band leader Willie van Zyl on saxophone and clarinet. The CD ends on a high note with a song that most parents have sung to their children: 'You Are My Sunshine' by Oliver Hood.
The general theme of the album can be summarised with the words 'At Last'. Have a listen to find out why!

Getting Americanization of Ooga Booga released was evidently akin to pulling teeth, because MGM Records' president was convinced it would be a bomb what Hugh Masekela and his band had played at this early-1965 gig at the Village Gate was jazz, but it was too African-based for American tastes, so the label chief maintained. What he missed was the infectious joy woven through every note of music here, which was enough to carry any kind of music from anyplace in the world over any unfamiliar patches, including the language, melodies, references to events, and places on the other side of the world; if this was to be New Yorkers' (and the recording world's) introduction to South African music, it was made incredibly genial and accessible, even from a jazz standpoint. The influence of Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard can be heard, along with McCoy Tyner in the playing of pianist Larry Willis, and he shows his debt to John Coltrane as an inspiration on "Mixolydia" as well as his affinity for Brazilian music on "Mas Que Nada." But the core sound was what Masekela called "township bop" his short trumpet bursts, sometimes seemingly approaching microtonal territory, are engrossing celebrations of the melodies of his repertory, which is mostly of South African origin (including a pair written by his then-wife, Miriam Makeba).
Among the latter, the opening number, "Bajabula Bonke," aka "Healing Song," got its first airing on record here it would later receive a bolder performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, comprising one of that event's numerous musical highlights, but where that later performance streaked and soared, this one starts out slowly and quietly, exquisitely harmonized and rising gradually and gently like a glider catching rising winds; it's impossible to fully appreciate the Monterey performance without hearing this one. With Herbie Hancock's "Cantelope Island" providing one firm reference point in the American jazz idiom, the set really wasn't that removed from 1965 listeners, as its stronger-than-expected sales proved. The later CD reissue (The Lasting Impressions of Ooga Booga), comprising this set and The Lasting Impressions of Hugh Masekela, is the best way to get this material, but the LPs make fascinating artifacts of an era when South Africa was just being discovered by the rest of the world. ~ Bruce Eder http://www.allmusic.com/album/americanization-of-ooga-booga-mw0001304086
