The style of Sugarpie and the Candymen is the "progressive swing": a mixture of original songs and evergreen rearrangements of rock, with different influences but where the common denominator is swing. And it is with a celebration of swing that the band celebrates its eleventh birthday: instead of immersing the songs of today in a mythical sound past, they have plunged into them to retrieve a handful of classics of that unrepeatable period that were the Thirties. They are the songs of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin's Great American Songbook and Duke Ellington's and Benny Goodman's Era of Swing, in the DNA of every American music lover, as well as every self-respecting jazz fan. The first impulse came from the great Renzo Arbore: collaborating with the famous showman on his album Arbore Plus, Sugarpie and the Candymen recorded for the first time two old swing songs and the experience spurred them to continue. "We especially love playing live and the feeling of risk and freshness of improvisation, and we often open the concerts with a handful of these standards," they say. "At one point we realized that these were also part of our sound, yet we had never recorded them!" The love of "Sugarpie" Lara Ferrari for Ella Fitzgerald was another catalyst for the project. A-Tisket, A-Tasket was his first hit, in 1938, and she is linked to practically all the other songs on the record. Listening to the amazing performance of Lara, the lightness and the contagious joy of making music that were typical of Ella can almost be touched. The only way to recreate the energy and immediacy of a concert is to record all together, in a short time, without the usual sophisticated arrangements and the many vocal harmonies. A two-day jam session at the now familiar Elfo Studio, nestled in the Piacenza hills. The recipe is simple: beautiful songs, minimal structures and open to surprise. In fact the swinga band like never before, has fun and allows itself more extended and more daring. On the other hand, it's what he's been doing in concert for ten years now! Cherry on the (sugar) pie, Mauro Negri, an outstanding Mantuan clarinetist and saxophonist already with Enrico Rava, special guest in the studio and more and more often also in their live adventures, which gives a precious touch, both traditional and very modern. Here is Sweet Classics, the sixth album by Sugarpie and the Candymen and their personal tribute to the great classics of jazz and American song, reinterpreted with the usual freshness and irony that have characterized this highly original Italian swing quintet for over ten years. https://www.traxsource.com/title/1175876/sweet-classics

“Waiting For the One” is the third and brand new effort for Sugarpie and the Candymen. Why the title “Waiting for the One“? As the exact meaning goes, “waiting for someone, something that really makes a difference” it can be an event, a moment, a person … not waiting for something to change but more of a hope and a promise. This album, in fact, represents a further evolution in the sound and in the musical direction of the band. The ‘Swing’ trademark it’s always there but the spectrum broadens with new colours, styles and inspirations: the marching bands of New Orleans, Cuban sound, Reggae, Nu Jazz, Rhythm and Blues of early 50’s, all of these Sounds are here, and… why not? Pop as well! The Record is equally made up by originals songs and covers, as we have seen in their previous work “Swing’n’Roll,” but here the tracking list is shuffled differently to show that there are two sides of the same coin.

The original tracks range from the traditional swing of “Blue About Love” to the french flavors of “Madness in the Rain” from the Beatles pop sound of “Lil” to the battered and Waits (Tom) sounding “Dusty”, from the progressive fairy tale of “QMV” to the country manouche of “Warchild”…While amongst he covers we find a number of hits of the last decade (“Single Ladies” by Beyonce sounds like it’s straight out of a Dr. John Album!, while “Toxic” by Britney Spears winks at Buena Vista Social Club.Catchy Hits of the ’80s like “Bad” has kept the original dance beat with a bit of gypsy flavor, “Material Girl” arrangement is inspired by Louis Jordan and 50’s Jump Blues”, Hard Rock milestones like “Highway Star” by Deep Purple has received the “Count Basie” treatment, but the most remarkable accomplishments of the Album must go to the two Pop Symphonies, the evergreen and worlwide Hits, massively known that go by the names of : “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Good Vibrations”.

In most of the tracks the Band has had the pleasure to have special guests on them: a horn section with Gianni Satta on trumpet, Rudy Migliardi on trombone and tuba and Gregory Agid hailing New Orleans on clarinet and sax.Daniel Richiedei is on violin and Giovanni Colombo on the piano, the accordion played by Fausto Beccalossi  and the percussions by Riccardo Marenghi. The same Candymen themselves, quite often switch instruments quite freely. These to follow were quite in use on this Recording (dobro, banjo, piano, organ, mandolin, glockenspiel, kazoo and various percussions … ). Special attention to production details were given and are clear to be heard on the sounds, the arrangements and the performances are all at the highest level! The recording of the Album took place at ‘Elfostudio’ in Tavernago (Piacenza), and in various other locations (often in their guests’ houses!). http://www.irmagroup.com/sugarpie-candymen-waiting-one/

Sugarpie & the Candymen began in 2008, when five musicians from Piacenza and Cremona – small towns in Northern Italy – decided to share their passion for swing, manouche jazz, blues, soul, pop, and vocal close harmonies.

A band was born, with the challenge to marry all these musical styles.

The band is made up of singer Miss Sugarpie, aka Lara Ferrari, and her Candymen: Jacopo Delfini (gipsy guitar and harmonies), Renato Podestà (electric guitar, banjo and harmonies), Roberto Lupo (drums) and Claudio Ottaviano (double bass). From 2008 to early 2016, the lead vocal chair was held by Georgia Ciavatta.

Very soon the band became a full-time commitment, starting an intense tour in hundreds of jazz clubs around Italy and Europe.

This first period allowed Sugarpie and the Candymen to work out both their sound and their repertoire: their musical caleidoscope has the most diverse artists one close to the other, such as Led Zeppelin and Django Reinhardt, The Beatles and Bessie Smith, Van Halen and Benny Goodman, Guns 'n' Roses and Ray Charles, Queen and Peggy Lee and so on.The challenge has been won!

In 2010 the band kept evolving and started writing and performing their original songs, both in Italian and English. They started playing the bigger stages of prestigious festivals all around Europe, and they even did a brief US tour.

In the summer of 2011 Sp&TC played at the Ascona Jazz Festival winning the Audience Award.

Sugarpie and the Candymen have released three albums under the IRMA Records label: the first, eponymous, Sugarpie And The Candymen in 2009, the second one Swing'n'Roll in 2011 and the third Waiting For The One in 2014.

Some of their songs had radio airplay on the major national radio stations in Italy (RadioRai1 and RadioRai2) and Switzerland (RSI1, 2, 3). In December 2011 they performed live at the historic radio program Caterpillar, on RadioRai2.

To further enhance their sound, the band had the opportunity to collaborate both live and in the studio with some brilliant Italian and American musicians, such as Michael Supnick, Dean Zucchero, Paolo Tomelleri, Rudy Migliardi, Gregory Agid, Davide Ghidoni, Gianni Di Benedetto and Mattia Cigalini.

In summer 2014 the band met Renzo Arbore, a very famous Italian TV and radio personality and jazz musician himself, and started a collaboration that gave the band the opportunity to play at the Christmas Concert in the Vatican (aired on the national TV in December 2014), the opening night of the Cremona Jazz Festival (April 2015) and the web/radio program Webnotte during the Umbria Jazz festival in July 2015.

In 2015 tha band played also at the EXPO in Milan for Nutella and other famous italian brands.

In the fall the band played live at two prestigious radio shows, such as Webnotte and Radio2 Social Club, introducing their 4th album Let it swing, a tribute to the great Beatlles in a progressive-swing way.
