Chris Flory, a talented swing-based guitarist, tackles standards, Latin tunes, and a few hot jam-session numbers on his second Concord CD with a solid quartet that also features pianist John Bunch, bassist John Webber, and drummer Chuck Riggs. Highlights include an enjoyable "So Danco Samba," the up-tempo blues "Drafting," "Besame Mucho," "S'Posin'," and a spirited rendition of "My Shining Hour." Chris Flory, one of the top straight ahead jazz guitarists of the past 35 years, reunites with legendary saxophonist Scott Hamilton to make a stunningly beautiful small group swing CD. The quintet includes Larry Ham on piano, Lee Hudson on bass, and Chuck Riggs on drums. Flory’s stellar career has included gigs with veteran jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman and Illinois Jacquet as well as singers Maxine Sullivan and Rosemary Clooney.

Chris Flory: guitar; Scott Hamilton: tenor saxophone; Larry Ham: piano; Lee Hudson: bass; Chuck Riggs: drums.

Guitarist Chris Flory was there in the ‘70s as one of the young musicians playing mainstream swing and, as part of that generation, he has kept the legacy of mainstream swing guitar alive while simply playing in his own musical personality. One of the top straight ahead guitarists of the past 35 years, throughout this CD, in this reunion with Scott Hamilton, Chris Flory brings out the best in Scott and vice versa, making this disc one of the high points of their recent careers. ~Scott Yanow

[7:35] 10. The Touch Of Your Lips

Chris Flory (guitar); Mike LeDonne (organ); Mark Taylor (drums). Recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York on September 22, 1996.

Especially inspired by guitarist Bill Jennings and organist Wild Bill Davis, Flory swings relentlessly, often serving up a generous blues helping. On this recording he opts for the organ trio format, relying on the talents of B-3 pilot Mike LeDonne and drummer Mark Taylor.

The tunes themselves, generally not associated with the organ trio, constitute one of the more obvious aspects that set this album apart. “Comes Love” gets a Latin make over and finds Flory swinging hard over clave rhythm rim shots and a lush organ cushion. He particularly burns on Basie’s “Taps Miller,” a brisk rhythm changes workout that also features LeDonne’s fancy footwork on the B-3’s pedals and Taylor’s tight, succinct fills. But Flory can also play it soft and sensitive, as he demonstrates on “I’m A Fool To Love You,” where he renders the melody with lyrical single notes and octaves before taking the tempo up a notch for the solos. A grooving, refreshing blend of tradition, subtle creativity, and fiery fretwork. ~Jim Ferguson

Flip Phillips - Claw: Live At The Floating Jazz Festival

Veteran tenor Flip Phillips is heard leading a jam session during what was dubbed the 1986 Floating Jazz Festival since the music took place on the S.S. Norway somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. Phillips and his fellow tenors Buddy Tate, Al Cohn and Scott Hamilton (along with pianst John Bunch, guitarist Chris Flory, bassist Major Holley and drummer Chuck Riggs) clearly had a good time stretching out on the five pieces (which all sport fairly basic chord changes); fluegelhornist Clark Terry dropped by and joins in on three of the pieces. Unfortunately the liner notes do not tell who solos when but veteran collectors should be able to tell the tenors apart.

The only minus to this CD is a surprisingly boring monologue by Phillips (one of Chiaroscuro's few unsuccessful "Jazzspeaks") at the conclusion of this disc. However his nine minutes of talking is preceded by 64 minutes of hot jamming, making this CD easily recommended to fans of Jazz at the Philharmonic and straightahead jazz.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-claw-live-at-the-floating-jazz-festival-mw0000614349

Scott Hamilton Quintet - The Right Time

(4:59)  7. Skylark
(4:55)  8. Stealing Port

The choice of some offbeat material uplifts this otherwise fairly typical offering by tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's mid-1980s quintet, a group also including pianist John Bunch, guitarist Chris Flory, bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Chuck Riggs. "Sleep," "If I Love Again," Hoagy Carmichael's "Eventide" and even Cole Porter's "All Through the Night" are not performed all that often, and one does not mind hearing additional versions of "Just In Time" and "Skylark"; the date is rounded out by a pair of Hamilton's originals. Everyone swings as usual, and Hamilton (who has yet to make an inferior recording) is in fine form. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-right-time-mw0000196941

Personnel: Scott Hamilton (tenor saxophone); John Bunch (piano); Chris Flory (guitar); Phil Flanigan (bass); Chuck Riggs (drums).

Chris Flory With Duke Robillard And Friends - Blues In My Heart

Celebrated jazz guitarist Chris Flory (formerly of the Scott Hamilton Quartet and longtime associate of pianist Judy Carmichael) is joined for his fifth album as a leader by members of the New England jump blues aristocracy: guitarist Duke Robillard (who produced the album and sings on its closing track), Roomful of Blues vocalist Sugar Ray Norcia, bassist Marty Ballou, and drummer Chuck Riggs. Flory's former boss, Scott Hamilton, sits in on two track as well. The result is a program of small-ensemble swing that comes across as genuinely joyful, but maybe just a bit too gentle. Flory's tone is warm and soft, and Robillard seems to be holding back just a bit in response.

The rhythm section keeps things moving along nicely but doesn't drive the proceedings as hard as they perhaps should have. But that's not to say that the album isn't thoroughly lovely and genuinely enjoyable the group's rendition of "Shine" offers a perfect balance between light virtuosity and inexorable swing, Flory's graceful, tripping solos on "Bernie's Tune" are especially impressive, and Norcia's vocal appearances are all highlights on the program. It's just that if the players had let loose a bit more, this album could have been a real blast. As it is, it's just thoroughly lovely and genuinely enjoyable. ~ Rick Anderson  http://www.allmusic.com/album/blues-in-my-heart-mw0000598465

Ruby Braff & Scott Hamilton - A First

Although it is implied with its title that this was the first collaboration between cornetist Ruby Braff and tenor-saxophonist Scott Hamilton, they had recorded a date back in December 1983 for the Swedish Phontastic label. Accompanied by Hamilton's regular quartet of the period (pianist John Bunch, guitarist Chris Flory, bassist Phil Flanigan and drummer Chuck Riggs), Braff and Hamilton inspire each other and play some explosive and consistently passionate solos. Highlights include a surprisingly hard-swinging "Rockin' Chair," "Dinah," "All My Life" and "Bugle Blues." Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/a-first-mw0000198500
