Since her 2004 debut as a leader, Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma has released records almost like clockwork every alternate year, with The Traveller (EtceteraNow, 2009), as strong a statement as she's made, featuring a quartet of Americans including drummer Terri Lyne Carrington constant companion since Postma's sophomore For the Rhythm (Munich, 2005). The Dawn Of Light returns to an all-Dutch lineup for the first time since First Avenue (Munich, 2004), with the exception of Grammy Award-winner Esperanza Spalding, whose sweetly appealing voice helps keep the irregularly metered "Leave Me a Place Underground" eminently accessible.  The Dawn of Light reunites Postma with keyboardist Marc Vanroon and bassist Frans van der Hoeven from 2007's A Journey That Matters (Foreign Media). Gigging together since 2006, this is the first time Postma has recorded with this group, which also features drummer Martijn Vink, last heard with her on First Avenue. If artists like drummer Han Bennink and pianist Misha Mengelberg put The Netherlands on the map in the 1960s with their New Dutch Swing, then this new generation of Dutch players is equally forward-thinking, but even more liberal when it comes to the palette from which they work, and the styles from which they draw. 

On this largely acoustic session, which features six Postma compositions written specifically for the group, the aptly titled, tempo-shifting "Beyond Category" one of two tracks written by van Roon goes against type, mixing the keyboardist's Fender Rhodes with some retro synth textures; even van der Hoeven turns on, feeding his double bass through an octave divider for a short but commanding solo in the relatively short track's final moments. The Dawn Of Light may have more limited instrumentation than A Journey, which ran the gamut from quartet to octet, but the greater chemistry of this consistent lineup is apparent from the opening moments of Postma's free-spirited interpretation of Heitor Villa-Lobos' "Canção de Amor." Blending instantaneous spontaneity, rubato lyricism reminiscent of pianist Keith Jarrett's 1970s American Quartet, and lithe contrapuntal elegance all supported with simmering energy by van der Hoeven and Vink Postma's alto solo sets an early high bar which van Roon, on acoustic piano, matches and then raises. Postma's compositional skills continue to develop, whether it's on relative sketches like "Falling Scales," where she provides little more than a roadmap, or the episodic "The Observer," which ebbs and flows in dynamics and tempo, Postma's soprano soaring into fluttering passages that occasionally reach into the stratosphere piercing but pure leading to a stop-and-start piano solo that van Roon mixes with the occasional synth line. Postma recently participated on Terri Lyne Carrington's all-female Mosaic Project (Concord, 2011), which deserves to give her some additional and deserved North American exposure. 

But as strong a performance as the saxophonist turns in there, it's in the context of her own music that her growth is most palpable. For more than a decade, the classic honeyed voice of jazz vocalist Denise Jannah has been heard on her solo albums in the U.S., but she has been singing much, much longer. After a childhood spent alternately in Surinam and Holland, she attended the Hilversum Conservatory, graduating in 1971. Her first American release was in 1991 with her album, Take It From the Top. Two others followed, A Heart Full of Music and I Was Born in Love With You. In 2000, Jannah became the first Dutch solo artist to release an album on Blue Note with The Madness of Our Love.

Everywhere that Laura Fygi visits, she is a veritable vision of exotica. In her home country of the Netherlands, they know her as the woman who was raised in Uruguay as the daughter of an Egyptian belly dancer; in the Far East she is the emancipated Western lady who many others aspire to be. But wherever she may be, there is one common factor in all of those locations: that instantly recognisable voice which has won her hearts all over the globe. Since her dance hits with the girl group Centerfold in the early 1980s, Laura has travelled down numerous musical pathways, such as jazz, Latin, and chansons, not shying away from any genre or style. That wilful quest for renewal has rendered collaborations with such music luminaries as the late Toots Thielemans, Michel Legrand and Michael Franks. Laura has also been presented with various gold and platinum discs and awards, as well as playing the lead role in Singapore of her favourite musical Victor/Victoria.

Laura has performed throughout Europe, South America and Asia. As a Dutch singer, she even managed to conquer the Chinese market, a unique achievement! In 2012 she signed a contract with one of China’s largest record companies and recorded the CD Flower specifically for the Asian market. It contains original Chinese compositions that Laura had arranged in her own style. Some songs were translated into English and French, but she also sang four songs in the original Chinese! What is the secret of her success? It is the combination of a number of things. First of all she has a husky voice with a beautiful diction and great timing, which has already been compared to that of Peggy Lee, and the intimacy of Julie London . She has an international appearance  which enables her to perform in Ronnie Scott ‘s Jazz club in London’s Soho with the same ease as on the biggest stages in most of the world cities.  She looks beautiful and is as Latin as Jazzy . But the most important thing Laura is a storyteller, someone who knows how to turn a song into a story that touches you directly from her heart to yours. While it still swings like crazy! In 2015 Laura celebrated her 25th anniversary as a solo artist but there is no way of stopping her! In 2008 singer Caroline van der Leeuw, artist name Caro Emerald, was as happy as a child that she could sing the song Back It Up live at AT-5 in Amsterdam. After that, the positive reactions came soon and in July 2009 she decided to release this song via her own record label Grandmono Records. The successes then accumulated in rap temp, first with her big hit A Night Like This and then the charming singer won several major music prizes including the MTV Award for the best Dutch and Belgian act, the Scale of Rigter, an Edison in the category 'Best Singer and the 3 FM Mega Award 2010. Her debut album Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor was number 1 in the album top 100 for more than 30 weeks and as a whipped cream on the price pie she received from Giel Beelen on 15 January this year the Popprijs 2010. On 21, 22 and 23 December 2010 she and her 16-piece live band The Grandmono Orchestra performed in a stiff sold-out Heineken Music Hall. From the catchy and typical 1950s announcement of Greg Shapiro to the uplifting final piece Stuck , Lady Emerald knows how to enchant her audience with beautiful live versions of her album songs. The band, with solid base players Wieger Hoogendorp, Daan Herweg and Martin Broeders, supplemented with, among others, the new band leader Stefan Kruger (Zuco 103), the 'sexy strings and the horny horns', as Greg jokingly announces them, plays fervently, tightly and with a lot of conviction and pleasure. The enthusiastic audience can not get enough of all Caro classics, which literally pass by and sing, jump, dance and hip cradle that it is a sweet lust. All songs from Deleted Scenes From The Cutting Room Floor, including of course Back It Up , That Man and megahit A Night Like This are played, supplemented by the two previously unreleased tracks Close To You and Two Hearts and a short, playful version of Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. In 81 minutes the Caro Emerald revue rushes past you, tasteful, seductive, in style and with class. The commercial success of the modernized and jazzy 1950s approach of Caro Emerald knows no boundaries for the time being. At the same time I am very curious how she deals with this and which creative choices the most successful Dutch pop diva will make in the future. But that is for later care, for now it's harvest time for Miss Emerald: 'Clear the way boys, the lady has arrived!'

Amsterdam, 1994. In the club circuit a band still unknown at that time. A brother and sister, and a handful of befriended musicians. The music they make: catchy pop songs. So that was us, says Trijntje about the start time of Total Touch, which is also the start of her career. Trijntje grows up in a musical family. Her mother is a violinist, her father a pastor and a poet. As a little girl she is already singing between her sliding doors at her grandmother's house and is writing a song to the sound of The Sound of Music for her father's birthday. Singing is second nature to her. There has never been another plan either, since she is very small she knows no better than she wants to become a singer. Together with her brother Tjeerd, she founded Total Touch in the early nineties. In 1994 she toured the world with Candy Dulfer, two years later the first single from her band, Touch Me There, was picked up by the radio. Her real breakthrough comes after Trijntje opens the Amsterdam ArenA with the hymn De Zee and surprises the whole of the Netherlands with her vocal qualities. Not much later, the second single from Total Touch, Somebody Else's Lover, a big hit. The first album will be one of the most successful debut albums in Dutch pop history. In the years that followed, Trijntje emerged as one of the most versatile artists in the Netherlands. She just as easily sings a pop song with Total Touch, as a Dutch-language duet with Marco Borsato, soul songs from Stevie Wonder, but also jazz standards. From 2001 she continued as a solo artist and worked with Toots Thielemans, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Lionel Richie, John Ewbank, Carel Kraayenhof, Janine Jansen, Candy Dulfer, Anouk and for many years she was one of the Ladies of Soul of Ladies . Together with the Metropole Orchestra she recorded two albums with the repertoire of master composer Burt Bacharach, who even provided new song material for this, and performed with him at the North Sea Jazz festival. In 2019, Trijntje celebrates her 25 years in the business. In addition to a sold-out anniversary concert in Ziggo Dome and a club tour in the fall, her new Dutch-language album will also be released. The album is produced by Jett Rebel. On this album she collaborates with Alain Clark, Diggy Dex, Vieze Fur of the Youth of Today, Glen Faria and Linde Schöne. Although Dutch singer Laura Fygi initially garnered notice as a member of the disco group Centerfold, after setting out in 1992 as a solo performer she pursued a more jazz-inspired path with her debut effort Introducing Laura Fygi.

Imagine what would happen if Stephane Grappelli met the Chieftains, if Tom Jobim played a Parisian musette, if Scottish poet Robert Burns was in love with Miriam Makeba and James Brown jammed with Jasha Heifetz. This album unites all the music styles I love, not in an i-Pod 'pastiche' way but in the way that whiskies are blended together  subtly yet with distinction. Pianist David Newton, guitarist Nigel Clark and bassist Roy Percy are all top musicians from Scotland whom I am lucky to work with, and Maltese percussion wiz Sandro Ciancio gives the cd a 'world' flavour. We had a great time in the studio in the Scottish hills and I am sure this comes through on the cd. If I had to choose one tune it would be “Couscous and Butter”, a cross of a Scottish Slip Jig with a West-African Soukous feel. We stuffed bits of paper between our strings to give it that Kalimba (thumb piano) sound and added an Udu (jug drum). Assanhado is a choro tune: Brazilian folk music made popular by mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim. Lucy’s Waltz I wrote as a Musette waltz with a South-American twist. Clair de Lune is just a wonderful Debussy piano piece. Águas de Março is special because of the recurring bass line. Havana Highway is my version of Bud Powell meets Cuba, with some influence of my hero Jean-Luc Ponty. Don’t Sleep in the Subway is a Petula Clarke hit based on Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Bebe well, Hermeto Pascoal is just a wizard, a fusion genius. The Irish traditional Cuckoo’s nest I first heard on a 1970s recording by Fairport Convention, where my friend Ric Sanders currently plays the violin. Back to my roots with Grappelli’s beautiful Chanson de Rue (recorded with George Shearing in 1960s), and Django tune Flèche d’Or, which I think works very well in a funk version. My tune Samba for Paula is just a Brazilian samba. It’s the last number on the album but really was the start off this whole ‘non-swing’ project. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/TimKliphuis1

Although the career of Trijntje Oosterhuis consists for the most part of English-language work, we must not forget that her definitive breakthrough as a solo singer was really due to a Dutch-language song. When Oosterhuis provided the opening anthem of the Amsterdam ArenA in a bright red dress in 1996, the whole of the Netherlands knew in one fell swoop who the singer (who at the time formed the band Total Touch with her brother Tjeerd). That song, entitled De Zee, made it to the Top 10 of the national charts and paved the way for multiple trips in our native language. Wereld Zonder Jou(a duet with Marco Borsato), Vlieg Met Me Mee (from the feature film Abeltje ) and Now That You Are There(which was an ode to the birth of Princess Amalia) are a number of examples. Despite the always positive reactions to the Dutch language, it took a long time before Oosterhuis dared to venture on a complete Dutch album. For her current theater tour (which will start this week), the singer decided to take a different approach and therefore only to sing songs that we can all understand and understand word for word. During the tour's rehearsals, the idea arose to record a selection of the songs for an album. "Songs that are dear to me, songs of all times, songs that need to be sung and heard, songs that remind me of important moments in my life, forgotten gems or rather big hits that I have wanted to sing in my own way for years" said Oosterhuis recently in a statement. During the playing time of one hour and fourteen minutes we hear new versions of classics from Dutch artists. BLØF, Herman van Veen, Willeke Alberti, André Hazes, Henny Vrienten, Marco Borsato, Paul de Leeuw, Frans Halsema and Toon Hermans are a number of examples. To combine singing with motherhood, Oosterhuis decided to record the entire album entitled Leven Van De Liefde at home. That wasn't the first time for the singer, because the English-language albums See You As I Do (2005), the Michael Jackson tribute album Never Can Say Goodbye (2009) and the Christmas album This Is The Season (2010) were also in recorded her own studios. This way of recording songs produces an atmospheric and intimate sound. The feeling of being at home with Eenzaam Zonder Jou(the first song from the album) immediately clear because a small role is set aside for Maël, the one and a half year old daughter of Oosterhuis. You will not get it any purer than this.

The guitar playing of Leonardo Amuedo plays an important role in the songs. In addition to him, we hear more fellow musicians on the album. For example, there are solos for Carel Kraayenhof (bandoneon), Candy Dulfer (saxophone), father-in-law Henrie Ronde (steel drums), mother Josefien Melief (viola) and Aram Kersbergen (bass). The singer has clearly opted for two camps during the recording. While one camp consists of fado-like songs such as Every Time Again , If The Love Did Not Exist and Love of Later, the other camp consists of the somewhat more uplifting pieces with a fine groove such as Beautiful Story, This Everything and It Doesn't Get Better To become. WithJungle , by the way, manages to deliver a funny version of the hit with which Broederl Liefde was successful last year. Her sons of ten and twelve constantly sing that song, so the decision to make it their own was quickly made. Because Leven Van De Liefde is the umpteenth album by Oosterhuis that she has recorded in an intimate setting, it becomes dangerous that she has performed this trick for the umpteenth time. Still, with the input of her fellow musicians, she knows how to distinguish this album from those other intimate albums and that is certainly worth a plus. A second Dutch-language album is also planned, but one with newly written songs. A project that we are looking forward to enormously and which will hopefully feature songs that are just that little bit more energetic, than the pure songs that this album carries with it. This height is mainly shaped by the extremely personal way in which she exercises her profession. Would it be that she ever worked as a psychologist, that she dares to be so exposed? There are of course more female singers, also in the Netherlands, who give their personal findings in the field of love and of life to publicity. But none does that like Soesja Citroen. In her thirty year career it took until 1998, before the singer dared to release an album, with those personal findings expressed in music and text. That was the album 'Song For Ma'. Meanwhile there are three: 'Soesja Sings Citroen' and 'Do not Cry Baby' have been added. They are bestsellers, because Soesja Citroen's repertoire on the stage consists mainly of pieces from these three albums. That is why it seemed to the singer a good idea to make a compilation of those songs. They now form the content of these 'Collected Songs' and are a great occasion for those who do not yet know Soesja Citroen, to get to know her. Again: the singer goes deep, gives her inner life full price in words and thereby she also succeeds in giving her music even more depth. Because what to think of this, words from her mother, that Soesja Citroen remembers, after her father left the family: 'Do not cry baby, I can not give you much hope. Daddy's gone now, so we must learn how to cope '. Thelonious Monk has been the subject of many jazz tributes, but not many of them have come from singers. Five years before Carmen McRae recorded 1988's stunning Carmen Sings Monk, Soesja Citroen impressed the European jazz world with this five-star collection of Monk classics. This 1983 date didn't receive much attention in the U.S., but in Europe it went down in history as a jazz-vocal classic. 

Not only does the Dutch singer impress with her soulful interpretations of Monk's unique melodies, she also demonstrates just how talented a lyricist she is. Citroen embraces the familiar lyrics to "'Round Midnight" which producer Orrin Keepnews described as "the national anthem of jazz" but on gems that range from "Monk's Mood" and "Monk's Dream" to "In Walked Bud," "Crepescule With Nellie," and "Let's Cool One," she provides fine lyrics of her own. And when you consider the fact that Dutch, not English, is Citroen's native language, her command of English seems all the more impressive. Born 26 November 1940, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. As a very small child Kauffeld would sing along with records by artists such as Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. When she was aged 13 she sang on radio and also with a local band, the Raindrops. Her professional career was launched early in 1957 with an appearance on a national radio programme with the Skymasters big band. Not long after this, she sang in Berlin as a guest with Werner Müller and the RIAS Big Band. Her career developed in the Netherlands and Germany and in these years she appeared with many artists, including Toots Thielemans, Kurt Edelhagen, and Svend Asmussen. A move to the USA found her working in Los Angeles and Las Vegas with jazz musicians such as Ray Brown and Herb Ellis. Back in the Netherlands, through her new husband, producer Joop de Roo, she met and sometimes sang with many visiting jazz luminaries, among them Thad Jones, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson, Jiggs Whigham and Phil Woods. She also recorded My Favorite Ballads with the Metropole Orchestra under the direction of Rob Pronk and Fernand Terby; one track thereon, ‘Yesterday I Heard The Rain’, features a guest appearance by Stan Getz. In addition to working with large orchestras and small groups, such as Cees Slinger’s Diamond Five, Kauffeld has also sometimes worked in unusual formats as she did on sets with a guitar-tenor saxophone duo: The Song Is You and I’m On My Way To You. Kauffeld continued to tour internationally, meanwhile also teaching at the Hilversum Conservatory of Music, an activity she ceased in the early 00s to allow more time for performing. During her career, Kauffeld has received many awards, including, in the 80s, Best Soloist at the Euro-Nordring Radio Festival and the Rotterdam Golden Heart culture prize; in the 90s, De Gouden Notenkraker and Hertogenbosch Duke of Duketown Award; and in the 00s, she received the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and her 40th anniversary as a professional musician was celebrated when she was honoured with a Dutch knighthood, the Ridder In De Orde Van De Nederlandse Leeuw. https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/a-song-for-you/1394946556

Carmen Gomes is born in a small village at the seashore and raised in Amsterdam, Holland. Bigcity life of Amsterdam left its mark on her musical development as well as on her attitude: go for it, noone else will do it for you.
Music has been playing a major role in her life ever since she was a small girl: "I grew up with the record collection of my parents. They had all kinds of things: Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, J.S. Bach, The Beatles, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Thelonius Monk. You could say that I am the product of a multimusical flow. This is where I come from, my legacy so to speak and my input to create my own music."
Carmen finished her studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam in 1994. In this very same year she won the first prize at the Dutch Jazz Vocalist Competition. Bert Vuijsje (jazz-critic) headed in a national newspaper the following way: "Gomes wins vocal competition rightly" In 1993 she already won, with her group "Carmen Gomes Inc.", the competition of the Breda Jazz Festival. The Jury also acknowledged the "Singer of the Year Award" to her at the occasion.

About her music she says: "In our music you can hear some r&b influences and the blues but also the fragile approach in the Miles Davis tradition of the fifties. And how about some gospel and folk influences? they don't scare us away"
Carmen has a broad experience as a singer. She performs with her own group but also with others. She has worked with The Metropole Orchestra,Louis van Dijk, Eric Vloeimans and Rob Agerbeek. She also recorded a duet with a famous Dutch singer called Rob de Nijs.

Carmen Gomes Inc. has performed at the Yokohama jazz festival in Japan, Copenhagen Jazz festival, the Arhus jazz festival, and the Langeland festival in Denmark and they have performed in small jazzclubs in a.o Belgium, Germany and the U.K. She has recorded 12 albums.She' lives inAmsterdam, as a performing artist and a singingteacher.

In Holland ( the Netherlands) I have been living and working with a WIDE variety of musicians. What is so amazing about living here, is that there is for me a lot of freedom to explore my voice and my own musical sensitivities.
I was singing with a swing band Dr. Bernard and his Swing band, and this band focused on Benny goodman style music. Which , being a dancer ages ago. made me very interested in singing on the beat, whereby most torch songs are sung with a back phrasing. I really enjoyed being the one to set a tempo and push the band. This skill became handy when I took on this project of Sax, piano and voice. All lead instruments, all of us soloists, all of us creating tension by phrasing behind the beat.
I felt it was my responsibility sometimes to sing ON THE beat , to create variety.
For Francesca ( our lovely Italian/Roman) pianist the task was of course heavy on her to be the rhythm section,
Scott is known for his smooth languid delivery. We didn't really ask him to phrase differently.. We didn't dare! ha ha.

But as far as variety is concerned, I felt it was also nice to sing and play in layers, for instance in First song and some other tunes, I sing some phrases above to color the solo or Thicken the sound layer.

Being young people playing the oldies, I am really proud of the modal treatment of some of the tunes. I think for this I really like Get out of Town. Francesca and I played with the double time feel but then also extending the bars. The double time tempo really comes in the B part. and I took the liberty of adjusting the lyrics ( her also phrasing forward) to get all the lyrical meaning without rushing.

In every album I make there is always One original tune and on this album it's Light at Heart. These were lyrics that I made for a colleague of mine. Anne Chris who decided to write her own lyrics, so I took the lyrics to Dirk Balthaus who I worked with for 5 years and on the album JuzzFlirtin, and he created the melody to this tune. But we only made one album together. I asked Francesca to play it, and she really dug it.

Francesca is a sort of italian, Blossom Dearie, and I thought it was a shame to not ask her to sing a tune so we added But not For me, for fun. I liked also adjusting my voice tone to blend with her mood.

Four Brothers , is Francesca's favorite, and our snapping really helps to hear her groove. Scott just whipped out the harmony at the session.
What I really like about Scott is that we only rehearsed once, and the interpretations and solos are truly intuitive and not overly spoken.

First Song, I love the lyrics, but I also love the melody, and I like the original key which is difficult to sing the lyrics to convincingly as it is so far out of the speaking voice for me. So.. I just hummed it.. a bit nasal so it would penetrate. It has a spiritual quality. Like in a church or a boys choir like feel. I suppose it's a compliment, but one of the first listeners said about this tune, " When I die, I want this played at my funeral. So beautiful! " now can you get more spiritual than that.

This Album's idea was brought about by Scott Hamilton's mananger in the Benelux area. Jerry Steyger, who is also the manager of the Bernard Berkhout Band. He said this is the First Time Scott has recorded a trio album without a rhythm section. So I hope it is worthy of that debut. I am certainly honored. Both parties on the album are true professionals and it was a pleasure to work with them. Quickly, intuitively and nice vibes.

My inspirations for this album are definitely Anita O'day, Kurt Elling, and I suppose a bit of Blossom Dearie too!

Looks like The Funkstamatics (a.k.a. the band formerly known as Euro Cinema) have been having rather a lot of success on digital platforms these days recently clocking up an impressive one hundred thousand plays of their 2013 single Koekwaus. Thinking that perhaps they ought to celebrate, the band had a ponder about how they could top the original version of this guitar-n-Hammond-heavy beast and decided they might throw in a blaxploitation brass section courtesy of Efraïm ‘Amsterdam Funk Orchestra’ Trujillo. Which is precisely what they have done – and you can get your hands on the bad boy known as the Koekwaus (100K Horns Mix) as part of the band’s new comp. Koekwaus – the Best of The Euro Cinema Years.

This album is a live recording of vocalist Fay Claassen and the WDR Big Band conducted by Torsten Maass with its fantastic soloists at the "Jazz-Schmiede" Düsseldorf on November 28th, 2015. In November 2015, Fay was asked by the management of the WDR Big Band to put together a programme with music from the Netherlands. Fay had carte blanche to choose all the music and have it arranged for her and the WDR Big Band.
