''I'm going back to my roots,'' Laura Fygi said about The Latin Touch. A delectable mix of salsa, cha-cha and great boleros is the ingredient for this magnificent album. A nice variation of slow and fast numbers, the album also includes classics such as ''Quizas, Quizas, Quizas'', ''Besame Mucho'', among others. There are three bonus tracks accompanying this album, all of which are the English versions of the other tracks. This seventh album offering from Laura Fygi is simply the best. Like Marisa Monte, the beautiful Laura Fygi is one of the great pretenders to the Astrud Gilberto throne. " The lady wants to know " is a wonderful collection of bossa nova and movie classics which reminds me of the magic I felt in the sixties when I first heard this kind of music for the first time courtesy of the album " Astrud Gilberto ." Joining Laura on the album amongst others, are ' Toots ' Thielemans, Michael Franks and Clark Terry. It oozes the music of Tom Jobim (Dindi, Corcovado, Triste, How Insensitive) and the full sound of strings featuring our own London Studio Orchestra.Like Pamela Driggs of Brasilia, Laura is equally at home singing in English or Portuguese and offers beautiful renditions of the movie tracks, Rodgers and Hammerstein classic " It might as well be spring " from the movie ' State Fair ', " Baubles, Bangles and Beads " from ' Kismet ', ' Cole Porter's ' " You do something to me " from ' Fifty Million Frenchman ' and ' Meredith Willson's ' standard " Till there was you " from ' The Music Man '. Laura sings the stunning but , all too short, ' Everything but the Girls ' classic " Each and Everyone " written by Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn in the early eighties and features the acoustic guitar playing of ' Leonardo Amuedo ', a sound reminiscent of Ricardo Silveira. Michael Franks shares a duet with Laura on the Franks penned " Tell me all about it " If there was ever one person that could influence and assist your career in the music of Brazil, Laura has found him in Michael Franks whose own classic " Antonio's song " from his ' Sleeping Gypsy ' set is one of my all time bossa classics.

This is an album for bossa nova connoisseurs from the old school, it is simple, it has good arrangements, beautifully sung and ' oh so pleasing ' to my ears. This is the kind of music that turned me on to bossa nova music all those years ago and I don't care if this is " nothing new ", it is wonderful music performed by a much under-rated vocalist. My advice on this one is, ' Don't let it pass you by, get out there and try and find a copy. Everywhere that Laura Fygi visits, she is a veritable vision of exotica. In her home country of the Netherlands, they know her as the woman who was raised in Uruguay as the daughter of an Egyptian belly dancer; in the Far East she is the emancipated Western lady who many others aspire to be. But wherever she may be, there is one common factor in all of those locations: that instantly recognisable voice which has won her hearts all over the globe. Since her dance hits with the girl group Centerfold in the early 1980s, Laura has travelled down numerous musical pathways, such as jazz, Latin, and chansons, not shying away from any genre or style. That wilful quest for renewal has rendered collaborations with such music luminaries as the late Toots Thielemans, Michel Legrand and Michael Franks. Laura has also been presented with various gold and platinum discs and awards, as well as playing the lead role in Singapore of her favourite musical Victor/Victoria.

Laura has performed throughout Europe, South America and Asia. As a Dutch singer, she even managed to conquer the Chinese market, a unique achievement! In 2012 she signed a contract with one of China’s largest record companies and recorded the CD Flower specifically for the Asian market. It contains original Chinese compositions that Laura had arranged in her own style. Some songs were translated into English and French, but she also sang four songs in the original Chinese! What is the secret of her success? It is the combination of a number of things. First of all she has a husky voice with a beautiful diction and great timing, which has already been compared to that of Peggy Lee, and the intimacy of Julie London . She has an international appearance  which enables her to perform in Ronnie Scott ‘s Jazz club in London’s Soho with the same ease as on the biggest stages in most of the world cities.  She looks beautiful and is as Latin as Jazzy . But the most important thing Laura is a storyteller, someone who knows how to turn a song into a story that touches you directly from her heart to yours. While it still swings like crazy! In 2015 Laura celebrated her 25th anniversary as a solo artist but there is no way of stopping her! Previously being under contract with Universal Music Netherlands, her career has moved to the Asian part of the world so the next step was a logical one… She recently signed a worldwide record deal with Universal Music in Asia and this year a brand new CD will be released titled Jazz Love. Laura selected a number of popular pop songs and had arrangements written in her own unique style. Bossa, swing, soft jazz, songs from Sade, the Beatles, Alicia Keys and Don McLean gain a whole new dimension! The jazz diva still has many plans of which performing is her favorite activity. She will make sure people have a good time and that is what she does best, entertaining! https://www.laurafygi.com/biography/

But wherever she may be, there’s one common factor in all of those locations: that instantly recognisable voice which has won her hearts all over the globe. Her travel-packed lifestyle has provided her with the most amazing experiences, as Laura has been a welcome return visitor to Asia for years. As a Dutch singer, she has managed to conquer the Chinese market for instance, which is a unique achievement.

Surprises are typical for a performer who has re-invented herself many times. Since her dance hits with the girl group Centerfold in the early 1980s, Laura has travelled down numerous musical pathways, such as jazz, Latin, and chansons: not shying away from any genre or style. Laura Fygi - Bewitched

Laura Fygi's Bewitched is a straight-ahead jazz date in which the attractive singer is joined by a rhythm section, a string section, and some guests. She performs fresh and warm versions of a dozen songs, the majority of which are ballads. The performances are concise (only one tune exceeds four and a half minutes) and lightly swinging, although the string section sometimes seems unnecessary. Toots Thielemans' harmonica helps out on "Good Morning Heartache" and "Girl Talk," Clark Terry uplifts "It's Crazy" and "The End of a Love Affair" with his flugelhorn, and tenor great Johnny Griffin is featured on "I Only Have Eyes for You," "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons," and "I Wish You Love." Throughout, Fygi holds her own and sounds quite relaxed and musical, making these standards her own. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/bewitched-mw0000098777

van Lins is complete musician, distinguished for his refined harmonies and great arrangements. As the most recorded Brazilian living artist, the composer began playing piano at age eighteen, very influenced by the music he heard in his childhood in the United States, jazz and bossa nova.

His harmonic construction, quite unusual in Brazilian music, is one of the features that would make Ivan Lins become so respected among musicians around the world. He had many successes as a singer and composer as is the case of "Abre Alas", "Somos todos iguais esta noite”, "Começar de novo" (“The Island”), “Vitoriosa”, many of them created by the artistic duo Ivan Lins and Vitor Martins.

The political atmosphere decisively influenced his career in the 70´s and remains and important issue at his work till now. Ivan Lins has released numerous recordings, all over the Globe. Always reflecting contemporary issues , his work is renewed and always brings new musical values and ideals, without losing his originality. From the second half of the 80´s on, Ivan Lins emphasized his international career, especially in the U.S. where he was recorded by major artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Barbra Streisand and many others. In Brazil, Ivan is constantly recorded by many of the great artists, such as Elis Regina, Simone, Gal Costa, Emilio Santiago, Djavan, Chico Buarque, among many others. In 1991, together with Vitor Martins, Ivan founded the record label Velas , an independent and national record company. His label promoted remarkable releases, revealing great new artists such as Guinga, Chico Cesar, Lenine and establishing names such as Edu Lobo, Fatima Guedes and Zizi Possi, among many others. Eclectic in her musical performance, Lins also composed soundtracks for films, besides several tracks and themes for novels and series.

Laura Fygi has long considered Julie London one of her principal inspirations. Yes, the lushly exotic Fygi, whose multicultural heritage is Dutch by way of Egypt and Uruguay, can smolder with London-worthy intensity.

But Fygi is a far more gifted vocalist, with a substantially wider range and significantly sharper interpretive skills. If comparisons need be made, equating her with Peggy Lee seems far more apt. Like Lee, she can swing easy and seduce cunningly, all while maintaining a feisty sense of self-reliance. The Best Is Yet to Come is Fygi’s 12th album as leader and marks the 20th anniversary of her solo career. Remarkably, it is her first recorded session with a big band.

Co-arrangers and producers Jan Menu and Johan Plomp have smartly placed Fygi in settings that recall platters crafted by Lee, Sinatra and their ilk under the hip direction of such craftsmen as Billy May and Neal Hefti. Along the way, Menu and Plomp make several enriching choices. “Smile,” too often misinterpreted as sunnily optimistic, is softly clouded in grey. “Too Darn Hot” rides atop a scorching, brass-wrapped drum line worthy of Buddy Rich. “The Good Life” slowly builds from gentle musing to impassioned vamp, and a pulsating “You and the Night and the Music” sounds as if it has been plucked from hard-hearted Hannah’s songbook. Even “Fever,” where you might expect the Lee echoes to be most evident, is distinctly re-imagined, its slow burn escalated to a three-alarm blaze. ~Christopher Loudon

The velvet-throated master crooner Duncan Galloway and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra perform a set of classic tunes from the 1920s and 30s with guest vocalists Les Brunettes and Laura Fygi.  With its authentic 1920s and 30s music, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra has been selling-out concerts and playing at society dances for more than forty years. Using the original arrangements the eleven-piece band has earned itself a reputation for transporting the music forward into present times in a fashion both fascinating and true to the original spirit.

Today the music is as popular as it has ever been. Big stars such as Robbie Williams and Bryan Ferry have been delving back into classic jazz and the Great American Songbook and they, of course, have employed members of the band on their recordings and on tour in order to create that authentic sound. ~ http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ladies-Gentlemen-Pasadena-Roof-Orchestra/dp/B00F3MM710

The Dutch Swing College Band "DSCB" is a traditional dixieland band founded on May 5, 1945 by bandleader and clarinettist/saxophonist Peter Schilperoort.
Highly successful in their native home of The Netherlands, the band quickly found an international following. It has featured such musicians as Huub Janssen (drums), Henk Bosch van Drakestein (double bass), Kees van Dorser (trumpet), Dim Kesber (saxes), Jan Morks (clarinet), Wout Steenhuis (guitar), Arie Ligthart (banjo/guitar), Jaap van Kempen (banjo/guitar), Oscar Klein (trumpet), Dick Kaart (trombone), Ray Kaart (trumpet), Bert de Kort (cornet), Bert Boeren (trombone), Rod Mason, Rob Agerbeek (piano) - among many others.

The band continues to tour extensively, mainly in Europe & Scandinavia, and record directed by Bob Kaper, himself a member since 1967, following the former leader, Peter Schilperoort's death on November 17, 1990. Schilperoort had led the band for more than 45 years, albeit with a five year sabbatical from September 13, 1955, when he left to pursue an engineering career before returning to lead the band again officially on January 1, 1960.

When you listen to Laura Fygi singing, you are struck by her fine intonation, her excellent phrasing, her relaxed sense of swing, her clear diction, mellow voice and her sophisticated choice of repertoire. But what impresses most of all is the abundant joy she clearly derives from performing - a joy which she unfailingly communicates to her audience.

In 1995, Laura recorded Turn Out The Lamplight, a collection of fine standards, some familiar and others not so familiar, but worthy of wider appreciation, such as "Still Crazy," "She's No Lady" and "For Once In My Life."

Laura Fyji has drawn her musical inspiration from a wide variety of sources, with Julie London one of her great heroines. She also cites, among the singers for whom she has a high regard, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee and Barbra Streisand and. perhaps more improbably, Gilbert Bécaud, Charles Aznavour and Al Jarreau. When it comes to instrumental Jazz, she is a big fan of Scott Hamilton.

Says Laura: "I like soft Jazz - and I like melodic music. If there is no melody in the music, then forget it. Life is hectic, so I like my music to be relaxing." ~Mike Hennessey
