Born in 1956, Nils Landgren began playing drums at the age of six, before at last discovering the trombone at 13. Between 1972 and 1978 Nils studied classical trombone at the music college in Karlstad with David Maytan and at the university in Arvika with Ingemar Roos. Meeting the legendary Swedish Folk-Jazz pioneer Bengt-Arne Wallin as well as the fantastic trombonist Eje Thelin persuaded Nils to move from strict classical studies to improvisation and to begin the development of his own approach.

After his graduation Nils moved to Stockholm to work as a professional trombone player. He was soon touring with the most successful Swedish pop star of that time, Björn Skifs’ “Blue Swede” who got to number 1 in the US pop charts with “Hooked on a feeling”. In 1981 Thad Jones invited the Swede into his new big band project “Ball of Fire”, to take the lead-trombone chair. Ever since that time Nils Landren has been involved in most styles equally: jazz and rock, soul and hip hop, big band sessions, and by his own reckoning, at least 500 albums including such internationals stars as ABBA, The Crusaders, Eddie Harris, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Wyclef Jean and Herbie Hancock.

In 1983 Nils’ debut album “Planet Rock” was released, followed by “Streetfighter” in 1984, “You are my Nr 1? in 1985, “Miles from Duke” with Bengt-Arne Wallin in 1987, “Chapter Two 1?, in 1987, “Chapter Two 2? and “Follow your heart” in 1989. Between 1985 and 1987 Nils also performed as actor, singer, trombonist, and dancer in over 360 performances of the Swedish “play of the year”, SKÅL, as well as appearing in several TV-films as an actor.

1992 saw the first performances and recording of the Nils Landgren “Unit”. The final breakthrough beyond Scandinavia came first in 1994: it was at the Jazz Baltica Festival at Salzau in Germany that the “Unit” became the “Funk Unit”. The album “Live in Stockholm” (ACT 9223-2) was released that year and was the foundation for the collaboration with Siegfried Loch and his then young ACT label.

The next Funk Unit release, “Paint It Blue” (ACT 9243-2), was one of 1997's most successful albums and received Germany’s Jazz Award. The following tour of over 100 dates gave Nils Landgren and the Funk Unit their breakthrough in Germany. Inspired by his mentor Bengt-Arne Wallin, Nils Landgren ventured into non-funky realms with a re-working of traditional Swedish folk songs: “Swedish Folk Modern” (ACT 9257-2), his first duo with the pianist Esbjörn Svensson, followed up by “Layers of Light” (ACT 9281-2), an even gentler evocation.

Between January 1998 and January 2001 Nils Landgren was also a member of the NDR Big Band in Hamburg, but continuously touring throughout with the Funk Unit worldwide. During this time three albums were released: after “Live in Montreux” (ACT 9265-2) appeared in 1999 “5000 Miles” (ACT 9271-2) and in September 2001 “Fonk da World” (ACT 9299-2), which was presented live at a special 3 day festival in Hamburg dedicated to Nils Landgren’s music. The “grooving band, which encouraged the younger members of the audience into a dance frenzy, but which was also taken seriously by the greying jazz snobs” (Spiegel), proved that it could be counted as “the best funk band in Europe today” (Stereo).

As artistic director of the illustrious Berlin Jazz Festival in 2001 Nils Landgren set up a concise overview of the current directions in Scandinavian jazz and was awarded the “Tore Ehrling Prize” by the Swedish Composers’ Federation for his “special contribution in bringing worldwide attention to Swedish jazz”.

A further aspect of Landgren’s multi-facetedness has been shown since 1993, when the album “Ballads” (ACT 9268-2) was recorded, and on its release in Germany in 1999 showed for the first time his talent as an emotional ballad singer. With his tasteful tenor voice he has been compared to the introverted style of Chet Baker. In 2002 he undertook a recording of a sequence of love songs on a “Sentimental Journey” (ACT 9409-2) which was enthusiastically received by public and critics alike. “We want more of this” proclaimed the WOM Journal and so was able to follow this through the production of the album “I Will Wait For You” (ACT 9418-2) where the singer Rigmor Gustafsson – having previously made her name as a guest on “Sentimental Journey” – took centre stage. It stormed into the jazz charts in Sweden and Germany, reaching number 1 and number 2 respectively.

In 2004, after a self-imposed sabbatical of almost two years, Landgren went full steam ahead with his Funk Unit and produced the acclaimed Platinum „Funky Abba“ album (ACT 9430-2); his own personal hommage to one of the greatest pop bands in history. 2005 marks the new album “Creole Love Call” (ACT 9707-2) together with the legendary keyboarder Joe Sample of The Crusaders, in which Nils Landgren can be heard again primarily as a vocalist.

In December 2005, Nils Landgren celebrated Christmas in a church in Stockholm with some friends from the Scandinavian music scene and thus fulfilling a long-time dream. This unique recording of the most beautiful Christmas songs from the middle ages to our time was released in December 2006 on CD and DVD, went gold in Sweden and Germany within a month of its release, and climbed to #2 of the German Jazz charts: “Christmas with my Friends” (ACT 9454-2).

2007 brings the Funk Unit back again. The eighth funk album demonstrates the same killer groove as its award-winning predecessors lead us to expect. Nils Landgren definitely has it: the “Licence to Funk” (ACT 9455-2).

Given the resounding success of JazzFest Berlin ’01, Landgren has been nominated again in 2008 as artistic director of the JazzFest Berlin for the coming three years. At the end of 2008 he will release a sequel of his successful first Christmas album: “Christmas With My Friends II”.

Music knows no borders, music is freedom – this is Nils Landgren’s credo. For every record of his new Funk Unit album “Funk For Life” (released in spring 2010) sold, one Euro goes to the Funk Unit – Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without borders) project ”Funk For Life” in Kibera Nairobi. By purchasing the CD the buyer will contribute in making life for people in Kibera just a bit easier. And he helps to guarantee that from now on, music will be a central part of the education in Kibera. https://www.allaboutjazz.com/musicians/nils-landgren

Soul music is such a broad genre. There’s funky soul, blue-eyed soul, neo soul, RnB, New Orleans soul, Motown-soul, etc. This album is a blend of those different types of soul music. And putting them together with my own songs, what we have made is a tasty musical stew. There is one composer/artist in particular who has had a huge impact on me and that is Ray Charles, so of course he is represented on this album. I heard Ray Charles as a kid, I think it was “Let the Good Times Roll” and I was dazzled right away. The way he treated the lyric, his rawness and that rhythmic piano really captured me. He has a way of singing from his heart, and that has been and still is my goal as a singer too. Always from the heart. In my opinion, soul music stands out as the genre that has the best voices on Earth: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Al Green... These voices, and others, have kept millions of people spellbound for many decades including me. When I was 17 I really wanted to go to Fasching jazz club in Stockholm to listen to Nils Landgren and his Funk Unit Henrik Janson, Lars DK Danielsson and Per Lindvall were in the band at the time (Jesper Nordenström also became part of the Funk Unit a few years later). I was excited because these were the very best musicians I knew about. But to my disappointment it turned out I was too young, and the door-man said he couldn’t let me in. I started crying, and he felt so bad for me that he did let me in, on the condition that I promised not to drink. During the show, I remember saying to myself; “Imagine if I could play with these guys some day”... And now I do! There are no words to describe the joy and privilege that it is for me to have these fellas on my CD. They have an outstanding sound, and they are such great craftsmen at what they do that it sounds fantastic on the first take every time! We spent 3 days together at the legendary Atlantis Studio and let me just say it was a smooth ride. Not only did the band deliver some great live tracks, Magnus Lindgren also showed up with some fantastic horn arrangements. To see this genius at work is such a treat. He is by far one of the most inspiring musicians I know. His mind and his playfulness with music are one-of-a-kind. Together we “cooked” an album for you: “My Soul Kitchen”. Just put a casserole on, invite some friends over, and let soul music be the soundtrack for your evening. You will have a great time I’ll guarantee ya! ~ Ida Sand, May 2018

Nils Landgren, Jan Lundgren - Kristallen

Styles: Vocal, Trombone And Piano Jazz

Just as he has two roles musically, as a trombonist and singer, Nils Landgren has two sides stylistically: the upbeat and the sedate. Kristallen, his 24th album, leans to the latter, finding him in duet with pianist Jan Lundgren for a collection mostly of pop ballads and folk songs. It’s easy enough on the ears that, if left as background, it could be mistaken for fluff. Listen closely, though, and it’s surprising how much depth these Swedes deliver.

Start with the fact that Landgren is a stunningly good trombonist, the sort of player whose sound is so light and smooth as to seem effortless. Although his solos aren’t obviously showy, they reflect some serious chops, as he stays almost entirely above middle C and moves around the horn with the crisp agility of a veteran bebopper. Rhythmically imaginative, he swings hard even when playing in three, as his fine solos on “Norwegian Wood” make plain, while his ballad work makes the most of his sweet, Dorsey-like tone.

Lundgren is Landgren’s second duet partner, the first having been the late Esbjörn Svensson, and that leaves him with some fairly big shoes to fill. Although he spends much of the album as an accompanist, backing the trombone with well-colored chords and providing lush, gently rhythmic counterpoint for Landgren’s husky, Chet Baker-ish vocals, he has a strong enough sense of the blues to cut straight to the heart of Keith Jarrett’s “Country,” and puts enough rhythmic punch into the Beatles’ “I Will” that you’d almost think someone snuck a rhythm section onto the track. In all, an understated delight.~ J.D. Considine https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/nils-landgren-jan-lundgren-kristallen-act/

"Besides his virtuosity as an instrumentalist, Wolfgang Haffner is an excellent songwriter, arranger and producer. His current release literally "takes the cake" .He successfully manages to create a convincing blend of innovative sounds, catchy melodies and brilliant group tightness, for the first time, bears purely European traits. Much like the proverbial chef de cuisine, he has taken the creme de la creme of European jazz musicians and formed a dish that has all the makings of a classic recipe: shimmering guitar riffs from Martin Koller, electronic effects by the ultra-manipulated sounds of saxofonist / bass clarinetist as a reminiscent of the best up-to-date Scandinavian productions, a taste of uncompromising rock here and there and naturally well-laced jazz solos at their finest. Till Brönner, Rebekka Bakken and Nils Landgren are among the colourful gang of characters."

Viktoria Tolstoy - Meet Me at the Movies

The box office is not really in sight when Viktoria Tolstoy starts to sing. But everything is different on this CD. But this time, the Swede has selected film scores of well-known strips and dipped heavily into the jazz pot. The result is newly dressed and yetunadulterated classics. Sometimes it takes 20-30 bars, until one becomes aware: "Of course, that's it ..." Because often outweighs listening first, Exact-listening, sound pearl capturing. Tolstoy abducts, seduces and strokes gently, smiles mischievously and makes you listen with every tone where you otherwise stick to the picture on the big screen. Sure, it's the old songs and yet they sound so different from the movies - pearly, smoky, groovy. Modern and new. Together with Mattias Svensson (bass), Rasmus Kihlberg (drums) and Krister Jonsson (guitar), Tolstoy brings back a hundred-fold reproduced sound. A thousand-fold musical throats and ancient classics become crystal clear and subtly nuanced jazz. "As time goes by", "Dancer in the Dark", "Kiss from a rose" - Tolstoy presents it soft and smooth in one place, rough and handy on another. Glanzlichter puts in several songs Nils Landgren with his red trombone, who is also the producer of the CD. He cleans even the smallest song passages musically bright, makes it flash brightly and gives the film titles radiant sound accessories. In addition, Tolstoy has brought the Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala as a guest. He succeeds on the piano a leap in time: With a light finger, he drives out the kitsch from the well-known wise men, transforms the dusty into modern-jazzy. Melancholic gets intensity, soft feeling ends in sounds with verve and modernity. And Tolstoy shows together with their musicians: full orchestra and Hollywood bombast are not necessary for the classics. The small, almost sparse cast brings to light Tolstoy's clear voice and lively, jazzy interpretation, setting the musicians in particular passages great scene and convinces with a fine sound universe. Very nicely done! I think the cinemas in this country should once again arrange film music evenings. Viktoria Tolstoy and her musicians would be the right choice for a matinee. Until a cinema owner dares, the CD offers a 48-minute cinema experience of a special kind. ~ Sabine Meinert https://www.aboutjazz.de/2017/01/viktoria-tolstoy-meet-me-at-the-movies.html

On the 9th of December 1980 Nils Landgren and Johan Norberg embarked a flight to Hamburg for a one week tv- session with Swedish singer Lill Lindfors. This was the first time they played together and during the 1980’s they would meet again on several occasions as being the most sought after studio musicians in Sweden. In 1988 they decided to form a duo ”Chapter Two” and their first tour was an immediate success followed by tv- shows and more than 300 concerts throughout Sweden. In 1994 the album Chapter Two/2 was released which has, up to date, sold more than 20.000 copies in Sweden. As being best friends they take care of this, their oldest ongoing project, and make a couple of concerts every year, filling the big venues in Sweden with huge crowds of their faithful ”Chapter Two-Fans”. http://www.nilslandgren.com/chapter-two-2/

Recorded and Mixed by Jan Ugand at Polar Studios, Stockholm, Sweden in January and April 2003.

"Rigmor is the greatest jazz singer that we have had in Sweden for a very long time" wrote the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. For years Rigmor Gustafsson has been a star of the young, vital Swedish jazz scene and has already released three albums in her own name. In Germany her highly-praised performance at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 2001 led to an invitation to the JazzBaltica Festival in 2002 as a result of which she could be introduced to the wider German audience as a "new star in the vocal heaven" (Jazzthetik). In the same year she guested on Nils Landgren’s successful Sentimental Journey album (ACT 9409-2). Now with the first ACT release I Will Wait For You she finally proves that she inherits seamlessly the tradition of great Swedish female vocalists such as Monica Zetterlund, Lill Lindfors and others.

Recorded by Pelle Gunnerferfeldt at Ingrid Studios, Stockholm, March 8 – 10, 2017.

A re-connection with a musical icon or tradition – it is often the way something new, maybe even game-changing emerges. That was the idea in curator/ producer’s Siggi Loch’s mind when he suggested to Magnus Lindgren that he might look at re-tracing the footsteps of Herbie Mann. “Stockholm Underground” is a homage to the one of the greats of the jazz flute, and to his legendary 1969 album “Memphis Underground”, listed by Rolling Stone in 2013 in the “100 Best Jazz Albums” of all time. The key figure in this project is evidently Magnus Lindgren, a stalwart of the Stockholm jazz scene, and known in the role he has had for many years, as a member of the Nils Landgren Funk Unit. Lindgren is not just a hugely gifted saxophonist, he is also probably the best jazz flautist in Europe. And he is offering this aspect of his artistry for the first time.

There are those who view the blending of electronica textures and rhythms with jazz is akin to the coming of the Antichrist but, like it or not, it's an increasingly pervasive component of modern jazz. In North America, artists including Wallace Roney, Dave Douglas and Mike Mainieri have been incorporating sampling, turntables and real-time sonic processing with great success. Even more popular in Europe, with artists including Nils Petter Molvaer, Eivind Aarset and Bugge Wesseltoft regularly pushing the envelope, jazz is moving toward exciting new places, and attracting a much-needed younger demographic without sacrificing anything in the way of substance.  Wolfgang Haffner has been stylistically cross-pollinating for two decades, but it was with Shapes (ACT, 2006) that the German drummer threw his hat more decidedly into the electronica ring. An in-demand player with significant international exposure through his work with Klaus Doldinger's Passport, the transatlantic collective Metro, and trombonist Nils Landgren's Funk Unit, it was a planned 2007 Funk Unit tour, when original opening act Ida Sand backed out and Landgren asked the drummer to put together an opening act, that Haffner recognized the potential for reworking the music of Shapes for an entirely different setting. Recruiting pianist Hubert Nuss and bassist Lars Danielson, Haffner rearranged seven of Shapes' twelve originals, and added the high velocity swinger, "Star," to round out the fifty-minute program.

Danielsson was, perhaps, the only choice for the bass chair. His discography ranges from the ambitious NuJazz-meets-orchestra of Mélange Bleu (ACT, 2006) to a more intimate acoustic duo with keyboardist Leszek Mozdzer, Pasodoble (ACT, 2007). For his role as featured soloist in the Wagner Reloaded Project performance at Norway's Punktfest 06, Danielsson a multi-instrumentalist who also plays piano and cello—has evolved a personal approach to bass that rivals Germany's Eberhard Weber in its unmistakable sound. An unshakable rhythmic anchor throughout, he's an equally impressive pizzicato lead voice on the dramatically impressionistic "Crusin," segueing into the melancholy "Some Other Time," where a lush arco delivers its singable theme before being joined by Nuss. The single biggest impression, when listening to this live recording, is how easily material originally conceived for a far broader soundscape can be reimagined for an acoustic trio, a testament to the concept that good music is where you find it.

As a drummer, Haffner is equally comfortable driving the fiery pulse of "24 Hours," first with brushes during Nuss' dexterous and ideationally brim-filled solo, then switching to sticks for Landgren's sole guest appearance, ratcheting up the heat as it morphs into an energetic piece of funk. Haffner solos rarely, but when he does it can be with unrelenting energy at the end of "24 Hours" or focused construction during the considerably more complex "Shapes." A broad-scoped drummer with rare multidisciplinary compositional skills, Haffner's name has largely been made by the company he's kept. Now, however, with Shapes and Acoustic Shapes, he's proving himself deserving of attention as a leader, a singular talent well worth watching.

Of all the graduates of the various James Brown bands, my guess is that Fred Wesley has been the most pro-active in pursuing a career beyond Brown. He's worked all over the place and with all kinds of artists; he's collaborated/guested on dozens of varied recordings and cut a slew of his own solo sets. He gigs regularly and seems to have found a semi-permanent home in Europe where he's become an almost ever-present on the flourishing festival scene. Indeed this new LP was recorded in Europe ... Germany to be precise. The title has nothing to do with the Beatles by the way; its provenance is down to the friends and family who encouraged the recording and worked on it with him.

Guest-in-chief is Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren. His main contribution is on the tune that defines the album's overall sound – 'Swedish Funkballs'. It's a pleasing, brassy roller that might remind you of Wayne Henderson-era Crusaders – not quite funky, not quite smooth jazz... but with its own discrete charm and certainly tastier than IKEA's meatballs, at which, I'm sure the tune is cocking a snook. There's more of the same sound on 'Spring Like' and the slinky 'Beautiful'. Variety comes in the shape of two semi-spoken pieces - 'Ashes To Ashes' (inspired by last year's ash cloud debacle) and the tale of life on the road – 'Everywhere Is Out Of Town'. Funkiest cut is 'Homeboy' - hardly surprising since it's an old Maceo tune, while 'Obamaloo' is a musical tribute to you know who. In the notes Fred chooses 'Palm's Up' as his favourite track and I'm inclined to agree. It's a lovely mid-tempo groove with a hint of Latin about it and some fine piano from Peter Madsen. It really works, which is more than can be said for the ambitious closer - 'Peace Fugue'. Here Fred's mellifluous trombone is quiet at odds with the rocky guitar of Reginald Ward. But it's still a Wesley horn and good to hear the great man's son, Victor, on trombone too... he's a lot to live up to!

Hot on the heels of his guest appearance on Mo' Blow's funky Live In Berlin (ACT Music, 2016), trombonist and singer Nils Landgren moves over to Broadway with Some Other Time. As the sub-title makes clear, this is A Tribute To Leonard Bernstein a worthy and at times achingly beautiful tribute, too. Landgren is joined by The Manhattan Transfer vocalist Janis Siegel and by the excellent rhythm section of Jan Lundgren on piano, Dieter Ilg on bass and Wolfgang Haffner on drums. The Bochum Symphoniker, conducted by arranger Vince Mendoza, joins in on a few tracks including "Overture: America" a 42-second introduction that gives the erroneous impression that this album will solely focus on West Side Story. Landgren's light, sweet-toned and often plaintive voice suits the more romantic numbers particularly well. It lacks the undertone of aggression that could have given "Cool" a degree of menace, but the cat-creep rhythm that Lundgren, Ilg and Haffner set down more than compensates it's somehow sexy and slightly menacing at the same time. On the other hand, Landgren's vocal on "Somewhere" is so melancholy that it brings a tear to the eye once again, the rhythm section's empathic performance is superb.

Landgren's trombone playing is a constant pleasure. On "Maria," which gets a fine arrangement from Mendoza, he's swinging and upbeat, on "Somewhere" his playing is gentle and spacious, on "Lucky To Be Me" his solo is brief but replete with good-humored charm. Siegel is an excellent choice of guest vocalist for these songs. Her duet with Landgren on Mendoza's arrangement of "Some Other Time" is the strongest of her appearances but her solo vocal on "The Story Of My Life" and "Lucky To Be Me" run it pretty close. If Some Other Time does have a weakness, it's in the choice of some of the lesser-known numbers. Despite Mendoza's arrangements "A Quiet Girl" and the instrumental "A Simple Song," though pleasant, never really come to life especially when compared to the rest of the program.  ~ Bruce Lindsay  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/some-other-time-nils-landgren-act-music-review-by-bruce-lindsay.php

Swedish funk and jazz trombone player Nils Landgren spent his formative years at the music college in Karlstad and at the university in Arvika studying classical trombone. He discovered improvisation after a meeting with jazz legends Bengt-Arne Wallin and Eje Thelin and moved to Stockholm, after which he toured with Swedish pop phenomena Björn Skifs ("Hooked on a Feeling").

Since then, Landgren has appeared on some 500 albums, including collections from artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock, ABBA, the Crusaders, and Wyclef Jean. He released his debut solo album (Planet Rock ) in 1983, followed by a string of successful titles including Streetfighter, You Are My Nr 1, Miles from Duke, Chapter 2, and Follow Your Heart. In 1992 he formed the Nils Landgren Funk Unit, which has released numerous recordings including Live in Stockholm, Fonk da World, 5,000 Miles, and Funky ABBA. ~ James Christopher Monger https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/nils-landgren/id252465524#fullText

Wolfgang Haffner - Kind of Cool

Drummer Wolfgang Haffner is one of Germany's most respected and experienced jazz musicians: his 30 year career features recordings with Al Cohn, Joe Pass and Till Bronner as well as numerous albums as leader. On Kind Of Cool he's joined by an excellent line-up of European jazzers, including pianist Jan Lundgren and trombonist Nils Landgren: their mix of classics and Haffner originals is a delight from first note to last. Haffner and bassist Dan Berglund open "Hippie" (one of the drummer's own compositions) with a relaxed groove that immediately establishes the inaccuracy of the album title: this music isn't kind of cool, this is cool. The tune's title is also rather inaccurate: this melodic number, thanks especially to Jukka Perko's breathy alto sax, is redolent of the '50s not so much "Hippie" as "Beatnikie."

Haffner contributes two more numbers. "Tantricity" is another relaxed tune that fits neatly into the cool school Perko's long, fragile, notes give it added grace. The lovely "Remembrance" gives the spotlight to 83-year-old trumpeter Dusko Goykovich (who's played with icons of cool, Miles Davis and Chet Baker). His languid, romantic playing on this tune is some of the finest on the record, although Lundgren's piano solo almost matches Goykovich for emotional depth. One of the striking things about Kind Of Cool is the presence of so many classic, world famous, tunes. Davis' "So What," Rogers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine," George Gershwin's "Summertime" are all iconic compositions. Most of them, in the right hands, have come to epitomise cool jazz one reason for Haffner's decision to include them here and these interpretations carry on that fine tradition.

John Lewis' "Django," a Modern Jazz Quartet classic, is given a fresh tonal quality by the sax and trumpet of Perko and Goykovich "So What" gets its own shift in feel thanks to Christopher Dell's vibes and Berglund's subtle variation on Paul Chambers' bass line, "Summertime" is a beautiful mix of a gently swinging rhythm section and Goykovich's heartfelt muted trumpet. Two numbers deviate somewhat from the predominant cool sound. {Billy Eckstein}}'s "Piano Man" is a late-night story of lost love ..."that can only be told by the blues." Vocalist Max Mutzke tells the tale with just the right mix of self-pity and melancholy it's easy to imagine the empty bar-room, the tired bartender and the spurned lover as they listen to Frank Chastenier's piano. Nat Adderley's "One For Daddy O," featuring guest trombonist Landgren, is another blues, but this time swing and good vibes replace Mutzke's melancholy. So what kind of cool is Kind Of Cool? The good kind, the cool kind that's the kind of cool to be found on Kind Of Cool. ~ Bruce Lindsay  http://www.allaboutjazz.com/kind-of-cool-wolfgang-haffner-act-music-review-by-bruce-lindsay.php

Not only the trombonist Nils Landgren has built up an enormous fan base over the decades with his Funk Unit, with big bands and alongside the greats of jazz music so has the vocalist Nils Landgren. His clear, throaty and yet mellow voice is very distinctive, and perfect for ballads. Apart from on his Christmas anthology Christmas With My friends it could also be admired on The Moon, The Stars And You that came out two years ago. What is more, Landgren put together a rhythm section here that understood each other intuitively. Alongside his companion of many years Lars Danielsson on the bass and cello, and the Viktoria Tolstoy drummer Rasmus Kihlberg, he also added Michael Wollny as a consummate sensitive piano accompanist to the mix.

It is a criterion that most of the songs on "Eternal Beauty" will certainly also meet for many listeners, from George Harrison's Isn't It A Pity to Mr. Mister's Broken Wings on through to We don't Need Another Hero made popular by Tina Turner. And not just the hits adapted from pop, no, also intelligent jazz ballads the likes of ;One More Angel from the jazz bassist John Patitucci and Another Kind Of Blue by the New York-based German guitarist Torsten de Winkel. Michael Wollny wrote the title track together with Eva Svensson, Esbjörn Svensson's widow, and the whole album Eternal Beauty is an homage to Esbjörn.
