As a general proposition, Sweden produces more good jazz artists per capita than any other European country, or so it seems. And vocalists are no exception. Song stylist (and she is a stylist) Lina Nyberg follows in the footsteps and joins such notable vocalists as Monica Zetterlund, Jeanette Lindstrom, and Nannie Porres. Nyberg cites Zetterlund and Porres as inspirations along with American singers Bessie Smith, Ray Charles, Jimmy Rushing, and Nancy Wilson, whose influence is evident in Nyberg's delivery and phrasing. The Swedish singer has an affinity for using one-word titles for her albums.

Previous CDs were Temper, Close, and Open. Her quintet album won the 1995 Swedish Grammy Award for jazz. Now comes Smile with a program of 11 standards and one Beatles' song. But the standards are delivered in a manner that is at the same time atypical and entertaining. Nyberg has her way with melody as she modifies the accents and phrasing for each tune. This stylistic approach is not just a mere affectation, but a legitimate and effective interpretation device that shows a close camaraderie for lyrics, and it works well. Her pronunciation of certain words is exaggerated, again for effect. She can be ardent and little girl sounding.

The usually mournful "Good Morning Heartache" is done in a detached, straightforward way without any indication of regret. This tune also demonstrates the novel arrangements, another compelling feature of the album. Nyberg comes in with just Göran Klinghagen's guitar behind her, then Anders Persson's piano enters, followed again by guitar with Nyberg's voice playing the horn part. Unique arrangements and sounds are possible given the unusual instrumental configuration: piano, guitar, bass, and a cello with two violins. The dark, cloudy sound of the cello contrasts with the clarity of Nyberg's voice on "Wild Is the Wind." She also takes the time to sing the verse of several of the tunes. But it is the feeling of storytelling Nyberg conveys as she delivers the words. They're not treated as a bunch of letters and syllables, but as image creators that are to be transported to the listener. This album is like hearing a picture book and is recommended. ~ Dave Nathan  http://www.allmusic.com/album/smile-mw0000969663

There are very few musicians who dare to expand their artistic vision with every new project as Swedish vocalist-songwriter-composer Lina Nyberg. Aerials, is the her second installment in a trilogy of albums that offers her unique perspective about the world, the elements and the music itself. Nyberg began the trilogy with the double album The Sirenades (Hoob, 2014), that featured her songs composed for her quintet and the Norrbotten Big Band, sketching poetic images of cyber-seas, monsters and waves. On Aerials Nyberg sings of avians—real and mythological birds—and raising her glance a bit higher and adding images of pilots, winds and astronauts. The aerial perspective gives Nyberg a musical look on our daily dilemmas, lives, relationships and our fragile planet from a distance. A highly personal perspective that may be more objective but also filled with solicitude.

Aerials is again a double album. Its first part, Space, was recorded live with Nyberg band—pianist Cecilia Persson, guitarist David Stackenäs, bassist Josef Kallerdahl and drummer Peter Danemo, at Kapellet (The Chapel) in Stockholm. This album feature looser, highly personal adaptations of jazz standards that relate to birds and images of aviation as "Fly Me to the Moon," "Where Flamingos Fly" and "Bye Bye Blackbird." Nyberg delivers these timeless standards with amused-playful elegance, commanding ideas of a clever storyteller but also a reserved sentimentality, leaving a lot of room for improvisations by her quintet musicians. Nyberg ongoing collaboration for the last decade with Stackenäs, known mostly for his free-improvised meetings with such innovativors as saxophonists Mats Gustafsson and Martin Küchen, or pianist Sten Sandell, cements the open approach to these songs. This approach is best demonstrated on their moving duo on "Skylark" or the the quintet searching, free arrangement of "Migration," with lyrics partly inspired by a poem "Motacilla Alba" by Joan Walsh Anglund, somehow summarizing Nyberg aesthetics: "I don't sing because i have an answer, I sing because i have a song."

The second part, titled as the album, fulfills a lifelong, ambitious dream of Nyberg to compose music for a string quartet. She wrote few segments for a string quartet featured on one of So Many Stars (Prophone, 1996) but on that album the string quartet played side by side with jazz musicians. Now, when asked to prepare a commissioned work by the Swedish National Radio music channel (P2) Nyberg wrote music and lyrics for her as a vocalist and the versatile Malmö-based, all-female Vindla String Quartet. The nine, highly-notated original compositions, only five with lyrics, blend beautifully Nyberg vision of contemporary music with a touch of rhythmic, jazz songs.

Nyberg arrangement of Siegfried Sassoon poem "Everyone Sang" is simply compelling—full of inventive ideas, delivering its profound, suggestive poetic images with irresistible commanding elegance. Her tribute to Soviet pioneer cosmonaut Valentina "Chayka" Tereshkova if filled with touching images of innocence and wonder of one who observed Earth from space. Her arrangement of Charles Ives "Like a Sick Eagle" (with lines taken from John Keats' sonnet "On Seeing the Elgin Marbles") is faithful for its fragile, compassionate of spirit, and her homage to pilot Amelia Earhart, "The Electra," after Earhart plane name, "sings away" any fear of flying. The concluding reprisal of the poem ""Motacilla Alba," with the Cappella Catharinae Choir charges the poems lines: "I fly and I cry for the brothers / At flight from war and terror" with an urgent, action-calling theme.

Masterful, imaginative and inspiring. ~Eyal Hareuveni

Christina Gustafsson is sister of the better known Swedish jazz vocalist Rigmor Gustafsson. This is her second album, a follow-up to Moments Free (Prophone, 2007). Gustafsson feels herself to be part of the singer/songwriter tradition but employs a team of three text writers—Cecilia Åse, Helena Davidsson and Stefan Danielsson—who, she says, "have worked close together and talked about me (sic) thoughts of life right now and what the contents of the lyrics should be. That's the reason why the lyrics became very personal and intimate." The obvious question is: "Wouldn't they be still more personal and intimate if you wrote them yourself?"

There is the nasty suspicion that—having worked the trick with Rigmor—Svengalian forces are now trying to make the same formula succeed all over again with her sister. Not that Christina Gustafsson doesn't have some vocal and, perhaps, musical talent. It's just that she hasn't developed it a great deal. Maybe this is the fault of her homeland. Swedes often refer to it derisorily as ankdammen, "the duckpond." And the impression here is of a small coterie of people doing their thing, then telling each other they've achieved a great result. Had a little more thought and care been taken, and had an outside, more cynical eye been allowed to focus on the proceedings, who knows; perhaps Gustafsson could have been prodded into coming up with something truly original. As it is, there is really nothing here that you haven't heard before, many times over.

The feeling of déja vu sets in right from the start with James Taylor's "Your Smiling Face," and continues through three of Gustafsson's "personal and intimate" collaborations with Åse and Davidsson ("Take A Fall," "My Move," "Winter Has Gone" and "In the Light of New York") and one with Danielsson ("Standing Where The Changes Begin"). The impression is of bits and pieces taken from various popular musical forms and stitched together. To this are added English lyrics that are almost but not totally there ("Look at her—she's moving in New York"... "The road is about to wind"). Guitarists Max Schultz and Erik Söderlind are both gifted but are rarely given a chance to cut loose. There are the obligatory standards: Harold Arlen's "I've Got The World On A String" and a rather edgy 5/4 version of "Stormy Weather," and Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," which Gustafsson does as a sometimes out-of-sync duet with bassist Martin Höper. Then there is a surprisingly good version of "Happy Talk" from South Pacific (1949), also performed as a duet with Höper, who this time wisely restricts himself to a purely instrumental role. Everything climaxes with a rather shy sing-along—with sister Rigmor and vocalists Sofia Pettersson and Lina Nyberg—of "Smiling Hour," taken from Sarah Vaughan's album, Copacabana (Pablo, 1979). ~Chris Mosey
