Jon Larsen (born 7 January 1959) is a gypsy jazz guitarist, record producer, painter, and amateur scientific researcher. He is the founder of the group Hot Club de Norvège. In 2007 he received the Buddy Award for his lifelong contribution to jazz. When he was in his early teens, he learned rock and soul songs on an acoustic steel-string guitar. Through friends, he learned about blues, jazz, flamenco, and classical guitar. After he heard "Tears" by Django Reinhardt on the radio, he decided that this is how he wanted his guitar to sound. At seventeen he formed a string trio and had his first professional job.  In the 1970s, Larsen worked mainly as a painter. He started the Hot Club de Norvege in 1980 with guitarists Per Frydenlund and bassist Svein Aarbostad. They had a hit record when they performed with pop singer Lillebjørn Nilsen. Larsen started the label Zonic Entertainment to record musicians who have been influenced by Frank Zappa. He has worked with Chet Baker, Philip Catherine, Stéphane Grappelli, Warne Marsh, Biréli Lagrène, Babik Reinhardt and Jimmy Rosenberg. He has produced more than 450 jazz records for the label he founded, Hot Club Records. He has led a group of musicians who played with Zappa, including Arthur Barrow, Jimmy Carl Black, Bruce Fowler, Bunk Gardner, Tommy Mars, and Don Preston. They recorded the album Strange News from Mars. Symphonic Django was released in 2008 by Storm Films, which also produced a documentary about Larsen and guitar virtuoso Jimmy Rosenberg titled Jon & Jimmy. In 2012, the documentary won the Dutch Edison Award.  After eight years of research, his book on cosmic dust in urban environments  In Search of Stardust: Amazing Micro-Meteorites and Their Terrestrial Imposters  was published in 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Larsen

The recordings from which the contents of Portrait of Angelo Debarre were drawn were originally recorded and released on a variety of labels between 1989 and, strangely enough, 2002 (the same year as the compilation's release). Most of these tracks, though not all, find Angelo DeBarre paying tribute to the legendary Django Reinhardt, either by playing Reinhardt's compositions ("Anouman," and the inevitable "Minor Blues"), or by playing originals and other modern compositions in a style clearly indebted to the gypsy jazz master. The oldest -- and the most recent -- of these performances are the ones most explicitly based on the Reinhardt-Grappelli quintets of the 1930s; the 1989 cuts, which include thrilling renditions of "La Gitane" and "Minor Blues," feature DeBarre in a trio format, backed up only by acoustic rhythm guitar and bass; "There'll Never Be Another You" and " Swing Gitane" both add Ola Kvernberg's violin to the mix (and feature an almost all-Norwegian ensemble). Elsewhere, Gabriel Androne adds a melancholy accordion to "Coeur de Bois" and "Swing Chez Toto," and a balalaika makes an appearance on "Romano Trajo." What this all amounts to is a nice balance between slavish tribute and creative boundary-pushing. Highly recommended. ~Rick anderson

Joseph (Jimmy) Rosenberg (born 10 April 1980 in Helmond) is a Dutch Sinto-Romani guitarist from, known for his virtuoso playing of Gypsy jazz and other related styles. He was initially active in the Romani (Gypsy) cultural center of Sinti, and was inspired by his relative Stochelo Rosenberg, after the release of his trio's album "Seresta" (Hot Club Records, 1989). Jimmy Rosenberg's international reputation started with the British Channel 4 show (Django's Legacy, 1990) with the trio "The Gypsy Kids", who consisted of Falko Reinhart and Sani van Mullum. In 1995 he was in the trio together with Johnny Rosenberg on guitar and Rinus Steinbach on bass. With this group he toured in Oslo, New York and the Django festival in Paris until he pursued a solo career in 1997. Rosenberg has often taken part in the Norwegian Django Festival in Oslo, his first attendance having been made at only twelve years of age. In 2000 he made his debut at Carnegie Hall, as part of the Django Reinhardt Festival at Birdland, New York.

He has released many records, and has worked together with Norwegians such as Hot Club de Norvège, Ola Kvernberg, and Stian Carstensen. Internationally, he has worked and released records with Romane, Jon Larsen, Andreas Öberg, Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre and Frank Vignola.

He has also played with Willie Nelson. His life is documented in the Dutch film The Father, The Son, and the Talent (2007).The film is an account of Jimmy's relationship with his father and his struggles with drugs, in addition to live performances. It documents the high regard given Jimmy by artists such as James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Willie Nelson, including inviting him to play guitar with them. Jimmy says, about performing, "That feeling is beyond description. A lot of love goes into it. When I play at a concert after I've been very angry or very upset.. and I play it all out of my system, after the concert I feel as light as a feather. It was all gone and I felt happy and cheerful. And I would enjoy everything I did". The documentary film Jon & Jimmy, about his long lasting, but turbulent relationship with jazz guitarist Jon Larsen, was released (TV and DVD) in 2010 (produced by the Oscar winning Storm Studio). Jon & Jimmy won the prestigious Dutch Edison Award (jazz) 2010. Bio ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Rosenberg

Eleven years ago three of the greatest acoustic guitar players in the world at that time met in Paris, and recorded one of the most bizarre monster guitar albums ever: Jimmy Rosenberg's "The One And Only", on guitars: Jimmy Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene and Angelo Debarre! On acoustic guitars!

All three players are European gypsies, and all three started off as professional guitar players at a very young age (10-13), and all three of them were initially inspired by the incredible Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) - the grandfather of all contemporary guitar players. However, they had all developed in different directions: Bireli had toured with a. o. Jaco Pastorious, Angelo Dabarre had done research in traditional gypsy music (extremely virtuoso), but the 17 year old Jimmy Rosenberg took most of his music from his own, seemingly limitless imagination. All three of them were monster players, and highly competitive...

When we met in the studio (I had been there ten years earlier, together with Chet Baker), it was magic from the very first moment: we only had two short days booked, and both Bireli and Angelo were gigging in different jazz clubs in Paris at night, so we had to be extremely efficient! That's not unusual in a jazz recording session, but what these three guys came up with during our recording sessions is no less than fantastic!

They had no time for going into new compositions, so they started jamming on jazz standards - trading choruses with each other, trying to top whatever had been done on acoustic guitars before, and competed in speed, hot licks, imagination and beauty. I have never before, or after, heard anything like what they did those days, and I have spent 25 years together with these guys - they are always good, but that was great!

Most of the tracks on the CD are first takes! Some are second takes, but never more than that. Their plectrum and right hand techniques are a chapter of it's own - they use heavy plectrums, 0'11 strings, and the right hand do not touch the guitar at all while playing - it's perfection par excellence. Both Bireli Lagrene, Angelo Debarre and Jimmy Rosenberg have a very beautiful "tone" in the accoustic guitar, and it's all in the technique, not in the instrument. I have heard Jimmy Rosenberg play on a toy guitar, it sounded much better than most other guitar players on fabulous instruments.

So - in short - you do not know what acoustic guitar can be, if you have not heard these three guys together: Bireli Lagrene and Angelo Debarre together with the possibly greatest acoustic guitar player since Django: Jimmy Rosenberg on his CD "The One And Only" (HCRCD 117).

In the years that has followed, many players have tried to copy the playing on this album, and it has become a reference CD in the genre, but it was during those two days in Paris it was done first.

There is a tragedy hidden in this story: the incredible Jimmy Rosenberg toured the world, and recorded nine amazing CDs, before his drug addiction took over. In 2004, at the age of 24, he finally collapsed on stage during a concert with Hot Club de Norvège (yours truly on guitar), and he has never recovered. Today he is in a closed mental institution, and we should all keep our fingers crossed that Jimmy Rosenberg - one of the greatest guitar players ever - one day will be back.

Yours truly,
Jon Larsen
