“Francesca Tandoi is a pianist gifted with an excellent musical taste and sense of swing. She has a refined voice, she is capable of composing unforgettable melodies and arranging in an extremely sophisticated manner." By Monty Alexander

Pianist/vocalist Francesca Tandoi is recognized by critics and the public as one of the most interesting talents on the international jazz scene, an excellent composer and extraordinary band leader who already boasts a path studded with successes all over the world. Her trio performances have been repeatedly described as “an explosion of swing” and her pianism incredibly energetic and elegant at the same time.

She has an intense activity as a sideman behind her having collaborated with internationally renowned artists but in recent years it has been the formula of the trio that has been more congenial to her, allowing her a wide-ranging expressive freedom of original intensity in which she maintains a firm bond with the past and the jazz tradition but with the mind projected towards the future. She moved to the Netherlands in 2009 to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague et al Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam, she graduated cum laude in 2015 and soon began her international career which sees her intensely engaged in concerts and tours in some of the most important theaters, festivals and clubs around the world (such as the North Sea jazz festival, Umbria Jazz, Cork jazz, Breda jazz, Amsterdam Arena stadium and many others in USA, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Africa, Russia and throughout Europe) both as leader of his trio and as sideman of some of the names most important of the Italian and international jazz scene.

“Francesca Tandoi has a perfect piano technique and an incredible sense of swing. The audience is totally enthralled by her playing." David Alston As leader of her trio from 2014 to today she already has several recordings "For Elvira" "Something blue" "Magic Three" and "Wind dance". The latter appears in the "top 10 best jazz albums of 2017" ranking of the famous Japanese magazine "Jazz Life". The same magazine defines her as one of the most interesting young talents on the European jazz scene.

Her latest record "When in Rome" will be released in 2022. She also appears as a sideman on more than 20 recordings, three of which as a quartet with saxophonist Scott Hamilton. “Francesca Tandoi has truly excellent piano skills, she's like she's flying over the keyboard. Plus she has a beautiful, enveloping and charming voice." Jazz Flits Magazine Translate By Google https://www.birdboxrecords.com/francesca-tandoi

The project boasts the collaboration of two of the greatest jazz musicians at an international level: Francesca Tandoi on the piano and Luca Bulgarelli on the double bass. Considered by the public and critics among the best Italian drummers, Ariano, thanks to his musical versatility, has at his side with international jazz players, including George Coleman, Johnny Griffin and Benny Golson and Italian pop artists such as the pianist and songwriter Sergio Cammariere, with with whom Lucio Dalla and Renzo Arbore have been collaborating for 18 years. The record, produced by Promu - All For Music, is part of the "Unplugged" project, a collection of "Live Albums", which the guys from Promu recorded during the "Gianicolo In Jazz" festival in Rome in the summer 2019 and which they subsequently re-proposed on YouTube during the rigid lockdown of last March, to relive the experience of the live concert to the public at home, in the most realistic way possible.

In fact, the characteristic of this project consists in having treated the audio, particularly enhancing the spatialization of the sound: if the listener wears headphones, he will realize that each musical instrument has a precise sound space, therefore, if during the concert the battery has been placed to the right of the stage, you will hear more in the right earphone. The "Triplets Live" record, as well as all the concerts in the "Unplugged" collection, are "audio photographs", which have the aim of ideally bringing the audience back to that precise moment of the live concert. Percfest presents Triplets, a pulsating and swinging trio led by one of the top drummers of the moment, Amedeo Ariano. In the trio, in addition to the eclectic and highly sought-after double bass player Luca Bulgarelli, the virtuoso pianist and refined singer Francesca Tandoi stands out. Considered by the public and critics among the best Italian drummers, Amedeo Ariano, thanks to his musical versatility, boasts collaborations with international jazz players, including George Coleman, Johnny Griffin and Benny Golson and Italian Pop artists such as the pianist singer-songwriter Sergio Cammariere, with which Lucio Dalla and Renzo Arbore have been collaborating for 20 years. Amedeo Ariano has chosen the trio formula for this recording work, making use of two acclaimed talents of the contemporary jazz scene: Luca Bulgarelli on double bass and Francesca Tandoi on piano and voice. The result is an engaging and sparkling trio that combines the experience of Ariano and Bulgarelli, who have been playing together for over twenty years, with the young talent of Tandoi, a Roman pianist, but Dutch by adoption, who despite her young age boasts a career as a jazz veteran alongside the jazz elite. The understanding and musical enjoyment are one of the predominant characteristics of Triplets and the interplay is palpable from the first song. Triplets is a musical journey that starts from tradition to arrive at more modern languages, with a fun spirit and the desire to convey many emotions, both sweet and sometimes bitter, just like in life, but always "swinging" and positive. When, early seventies, Scott Hamilton made his international debut, it was a kind of sensation. On the album cover he looked like a guy from the fifties or even earlier. The music he played also had the taste of yore. Of all those great swingers that preceded him. Scott Hamilton seemed a fad that would fade. Not so with Hamilton. Happily. His style was a matter of pure love. A love to which he stayed faithful. With that ideal mastery of the flowery language of swing and bop. Up to the smallest punctuation marks. Being able to use them fluently in enjoyable stories everyone could like. By lovingly blowing new life into his ‘standards’.  In The Hague’s ‘Literaire Sociëteit De Witte’ the Jazz at the Club- programme brought Hamilton together with Dutch jazzmusicians who could have been his blood relatives, musically speaking. Drummer Frits Landesbergen who as a young musician already gathered all the important jazz prizes in his country and always swings. Bass player Hans Mantel a musician who can caress, swing ánd sing on his instrument. With the youngest of the band, piano player Francesca Tandoi, originally from Rome but living in The Hague, who supports and solos with lots of phantasy and a perfect timing. And whose singing voice is as important. Because of the ear-pleasing intimacy and romance of her expression in ‘Maybe you’ll be there’ and ‘Estate’. ‘Scott Hamilton Live’ offers a delightful journey from what jazz was to what it is. With the ancient ‘Sheik of Araby’ (1921, from a Rudolf Valentino-movie) to Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘Blue 'N' Boogie’. From ‘Dein ist mein ganzes Herz’, from the Franz Léhar operetta ‘Das Land des Lächens’, as a jazz piece titled ‘Yours is my heart alone’. To Irving Berlins beautiful ‘How deep is the ocean’ or Gene de Pauls ‘I’ll remember April’.  Welcome to the world of the eternal lover, Scott Hamilton. https://www.oaprecords.com/index.php?id=29&no_cache=1&L=0&tt_products%5Bproduct%5D=139&cHash=d9a0dfbbb676b7dc3af6647ab1c5f965

Hearing Scott Hamilton play, is like listening to a declaration of love that already lasts for many years but still is as potent as then. And what a joy to recognize how the tenorman absorbed the musical idiom of the jazzgreats of his youth, from Coleman Hawkins to Ben Webster, and shaped his very own language and pronounciation for it. On his musical journeys in a stylistically mixed-up world, he always found in any country musicians who were glad to speak that language with him.

As in the Netherlands in OAP’s ‘Blue 'N' Boogie’: the contagious swing of drummer Frits Landesbergen, light when it can, forceful when it has to be. Or bassplayer Hans Mantel who lovingly provides his punctuation marks and reminds one (e.g. in Franz Léhars ‘Yours is my heart alone’) of a George Mraz. Italian pianoplayer and singer Francesca Tandoi is a discovery. Who heard her play and sing Bruno Martino’s ‘Estate’ doesn’t want it any other way; the romance of ‘Maybe you’ll be there’ is matching. Within her stylistically pure piano adventures always a nose for the right ‘blue notes’. Hamiltons choice of repertory mirrors the timelessness of his taste. Dizzy Gillespie’s swinging titlesong next to ‘The sheik of Araby’ that dates from 1921 but sparklingly is lifted over years and time. Or the non-sentimental beauty of ‘Body and soul’. Or Duke Ellington’s ‘Come Sunday’, with echoes of Johnny Hodges.
‘Blue 'N' Boogie’ is sheer pleasure.

A really crackling little album from this Italian trio a group led by drummer Amedeo Ariano, which maybe gives them a slightly different approach to the music than the usual piano trio! Pianist Francesca Tandoi is very much on top of things grabbing notes in bold handfuls, and using them to sculpt a surprisingly soulful sound for the set but many of the tunes are also very strongly driven by the rhythm duo, with Ariano on drums and Luca Bulgarelli on bass the latter of whom we might be discovering here for the first time, but have become instant fans thanks to the richness of his sound! The tunes are all familiar, but they're exploded nicely in that way that only the best trios can do, like the Oscar Peterson combo of the 60s with Ray Brown on bass. There's a female singer in a few spots we assume it's Tandoi but most of the focus is instrumental. Tracks include "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "FSR", "The Sheik Of Araby", "You Don't Know Me", "BulgArianTandoj", and "When Sunny Gets Blue".  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/887126/Amadeo-Ariano-Luca-Bulgarelli-Francesca-Tandoi:Triplets-Japanese-paper-sleeve-edition

The 31-year-old Francesca Tandoi has been busy since 2014 with an advance in the jazz world. The originally Italian musician has released two albums on the Japanese jazz label Atelier Sawano and in the country of the rising sun alone 10,000 copies were sold. For jazz concepts no numbers to be ashamed of. Wind Dance is the new CD and it has all the ingredients to make the success grow. To begin with, Tandoi shows impressive piano skills. Her fingers seem to be loose, so smoothly she flies over her keyboard in the swinging tracks. It is striking that, in addition to her virtuosity, she still has a fairly soft massaging touch. That comes into its own in the quiet songs in which romance and melancholy breathe. That atmosphere gets an extra dimension when Tandoi is also blessed with a beautiful singing voice full of warmth and sensuality. Secretly it is a bit of a shame that she sings in only four of the eleven songs. And that is the only comment on Wind Dance. A delightful record on which Tandoi is accompanied by none other than bassist Frans van Geest and drummer Frits Landesbergen. In Holland ( the Netherlands) I have been living and working with a WIDE variety of musicians. What is so amazing about living here, is that there is for me a lot of freedom to explore my voice and my own musical sensitivities.
I was singing with a swing band Dr. Bernard and his Swing band, and this band focused on Benny goodman style music. Which , being a dancer ages ago. made me very interested in singing on the beat, whereby most torch songs are sung with a back phrasing. I really enjoyed being the one to set a tempo and push the band. This skill became handy when I took on this project of Sax, piano and voice. All lead instruments, all of us soloists, all of us creating tension by phrasing behind the beat.
I felt it was my responsibility sometimes to sing ON THE beat , to create variety.
For Francesca ( our lovely Italian/Roman) pianist the task was of course heavy on her to be the rhythm section,
Scott is known for his smooth languid delivery. We didn't really ask him to phrase differently.. We didn't dare! ha ha.

But as far as variety is concerned, I felt it was also nice to sing and play in layers, for instance in First song and some other tunes, I sing some phrases above to color the solo or Thicken the sound layer.

Being young people playing the oldies, I am really proud of the modal treatment of some of the tunes. I think for this I really like Get out of Town. Francesca and I played with the double time feel but then also extending the bars. The double time tempo really comes in the B part. and I took the liberty of adjusting the lyrics ( her also phrasing forward) to get all the lyrical meaning without rushing.

In every album I make there is always One original tune and on this album it's Light at Heart. These were lyrics that I made for a colleague of mine. Anne Chris who decided to write her own lyrics, so I took the lyrics to Dirk Balthaus who I worked with for 5 years and on the album JuzzFlirtin, and he created the melody to this tune. But we only made one album together. I asked Francesca to play it, and she really dug it.

Francesca is a sort of italian, Blossom Dearie, and I thought it was a shame to not ask her to sing a tune so we added But not For me, for fun. I liked also adjusting my voice tone to blend with her mood.

Four Brothers , is Francesca's favorite, and our snapping really helps to hear her groove. Scott just whipped out the harmony at the session.
What I really like about Scott is that we only rehearsed once, and the interpretations and solos are truly intuitive and not overly spoken.

First Song, I love the lyrics, but I also love the melody, and I like the original key which is difficult to sing the lyrics to convincingly as it is so far out of the speaking voice for me. So.. I just hummed it.. a bit nasal so it would penetrate. It has a spiritual quality. Like in a church or a boys choir like feel. I suppose it's a compliment, but one of the first listeners said about this tune, " When I die, I want this played at my funeral. So beautiful! " now can you get more spiritual than that.

This Album's idea was brought about by Scott Hamilton's mananger in the Benelux area. Jerry Steyger, who is also the manager of the Bernard Berkhout Band. He said this is the First Time Scott has recorded a trio album without a rhythm section. So I hope it is worthy of that debut. I am certainly honored. Both parties on the album are true professionals and it was a pleasure to work with them. Quickly, intuitively and nice vibes.

My inspirations for this album are definitely Anita O'day, Kurt Elling, and I suppose a bit of Blossom Dearie too!
Hope you enjoy listening.

With the assistance of acclaimed and talented musicians (Giorgos Nazos on the guitar, Francesca Tandoi on the piano, Vasilis Stefanopoulos on the double bass and George Polyhronakos on the drums) Tamuz has managed to express melodically her deep and rich feelings.
