Jazz singer/pianist Diane Marino was born in the New York City borough of Manhattan and began piano lessons at the age of ten. She attended the High School for the Performing Arts as a classical piano major, then studied piano with Murray Perahia at the Mannes College of Music. She had already begun appearing professionally before earning her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Mannes, playing and singing around the New York metropolitan area. She worked solo until she met bassist Frank Marino, whom she subsequently married, and with whom she formed the Brazilian nonet Som Brasiliero.

On August 26, 2003, the Marinos' M&M Records label released A Sleepin' Bee, an album by the Diane Marino Quartet, also featuring flute and saxophone player Rusty Jessup and drummer Chris Brown. On the Street Where You Live followed on May 4, 2004. Having relocated to Nashville, Marino released her third album, Just Groovin', a collection of her interpretations of '60s pop standards featuring such guests as Kirk Whalum, Houston Person, and Felix Cavaliere, on September 16, 2008. Singer Diane Marino seeks to pay homage to a friend on “Soul Serenade – – the Gloria Lynne Project.” The performer moves away from the piano to allow herself to concentrate on the singing duties on the album. With the relatively large ensemble of musicians Marino has put together, classic songs come to life. From the sounds of things, it has worked out well for Marino to have focused on singing. “Soul Serenade” is a collection of 14 songs that find Marino and her ensemble playing with a buoyant vibe and energy. Two standout tracks from the release are “Somewhere in the Night” and “An Old-Fashioned Walk.”

The songs on the album were taught to Marino by Gloria Lynne. All 14 songs had been unknown to Marino prior to Lynne’s performances. Marino includes them all on the recording. But one listen to the recording shows that Marino has done all the homework to make her dreams for the album come true.

With an arranger, a solid ensemble that consists of two basses, two violins, cello, bassoon and multiple guitars, trumpet, and trombone, and an array of saxophones, Marino puts her own spin on things.

Gloria Lynne’s life and musical career are worth celebrating. Born just days before the Great Depression, Lynne’s recording and performing career spanned almost a lifetime. From 1958 to 2007, Lynne made an impact on the worlds of jazz and r&b. She earned accolades from jazz and r&b organizations. She passed away in 2013 at age 83. ~By Dodie Miller-Gould

Diane Marino is an artist worthy of your attention, for her ability to combine the talents of a swinging pianist, a vocalist that communicates with feeling and warmth, and an arranger who can package the music in a fresh and intriguing manner that can grab your interest. In today s diffuse musical world, with remotely varied styles that lack a concise emphasis on melody and the classic forms, it s important to have a lively presentation of the great standards to keep these great songs invigorating and in the moment. This album from Diane Marino serves those purposes well. It should be an important addition to your collection. Loads Of Love is Diane Marino s fifth album, all on the M & M label. A native New Yorker, Diane attended the High School for the Performing Arts and Mannes College of Music for classical piano. Her first album, A Sleeping Bee included a jazz quartet, playing standards, the next, On The Street Where You Live , had jazz, but also with a Brazilian and Latin flair, while Just Groovin reinterpreted pop songs of the 60's with a larger ensemble and guest artists. Select songs from these three CD s were re-mastered for the 2011 offering From The Heart .

They all received widespread air play and international exposure. Diane also has performed around the country, in festivals, jazz clubs, and cabaret settings like New York City s Metropolitan Room. This wealth of experience and broad outlook can now be synthesized in this current album, with a focus back to her jazz roots. Helping that focus and contributing mightily to the proceedings is Houston Person, who appears as a guest artist on the tenor sax, and more important, has lent a creative direction as producer of the album. For those who don t know him, Person is a towering figure from the classic generation of the tough tenor , with a robust yet sweet bluesy sound. But equally important here, as a producer he has a sweepingly broad knowledge of the American popular songbook, and an approach that focuses on the melody. This approach combines neatly with Diane Marino s sensibilities and they ve known each other for several years and collaborated before. On this album, they join together to explore the ballads and blues. These aspects of jazz inform the best sides of Diane s interpretations of these standards, with her own arrangements that put a little individual spin on the chestnuts. In addition to Diane Marino s piano and Houston Person s tenor sax, the band includes musicians with whom Diane has performed frequently in her current Nashville base, and beyond, and the comfortable familiarity adds a soothing and tight level to the presentation.

The bassist is Diane s husband and musical partner, too, Frank Marino, Chris Brown lays down a solid groove on the drums, and Pat Bergeson appears on guitar on several tracks. And another special guest is trumpeter George Tidwell, who adds an element of beauty in his appearance on Someone You ve Loved . The program of songs on the album include some well-known Richard Rodgers and Cole Porter you should know, some less prevalent nuggets of the songbook, and even some Ellington, all conveyed with an intimacy of warmth and interpretation. The title track Loads Of Love comes from the legendary later Rodgers show No Strings , originally performed by Diahann Carroll and popularized to jazz audiences by Shirley Horn. Indeed, there are several Shirley Horn connections here, obvious in Horn s coy stylistic influence on Marino, and also in the material, like Johnny Pate s Someone You ve Loved which Shirley Horn also recorded as Have You Tried To Forget , or Jimmy McHugh s I Just Found Out About Love. ~ Editorial Reviews   http://www.amazon.com/Loads-Love-Diane-Marino/dp/B00BLRQKKK.

Different people remember the 1960s in different ways. Jazz-pop singer Diane Marino treats them as a source of love songs on Just Groovin. Marino boasts some '60s influences in her singing, which owes a little to Dinah Washington in its deliberation and a little to Shirley Bassey in its manner, although Marino's style is essentially buoyant and happy; she practically sounds pleased with herself much of the time. That's not a bad feel to get into '60s love songs, but the problem with the album lies in the arrangements, also by Marino. Simply put, nearly every one is the same, with a piano-based jazz accompaniment leading to a similar-sounding horn solo. The soloists are estimable, with people like Kirk Whalum and Houston Person. But after awhile the approach becomes predictable. Thus, when the pattern is broken, the songs stand out. In particular, the duet with Felix Cavaliere (who sang the original) on "Groovin'" is welcome, along with Cavaliere's Hammond B-3 organ solo. And Anthony LaMarchina's cello on "Never My Love" pleases if only because it isn't another horn. The use of the horn soloists couldn't be more deliberate they even get credited on each song on the back cover. But the '60s, whatever one may think of them, was a time of experimentation and many different, even clashing styles. The '60s were never dull, but sometimes this album is. ~ William Ruhlmann

The whole is the sum of its parts. That statement is a principle in the science of mathematics and the art of music. You're holding a sampling of the sum of what I'm musically about. These selections flow from my soul to your heart via the sounds of my voice and piano. This music carries a kind of communication that words alone cannot, and emanates from deep inside me where thoughts are often expressed, and unavoidably felt. To hear these selections, priorities from my life of musical nurturing, is to know me as I've been, and accompany me as I go in multiple directions, often onward, always upward and never backward. I feel as though my music, although having its foundation in Jazz, is resistant to a particular branding. Following the release of my album, "Just Groovin," some people assumed I was a exclusively a smooth jazz artist. Because I'm comfortable with Brazilian music, others later surmised I'm a Brazilian artist. Admittedly, the labels are flattering, but ultimately restrictive. My music is diversified and it's my own, offered for my satisfaction and your edification. I might even refer to this CD as “Eclectic Jazz”. “Eclectic jazz? With this album, have I birthed a new genre? If so, it was intentional, and was the unavoidable upshot of a maverick artist, and the lovable liability of that incessant spiral onward, upward and never backward. Diane Marino… Building Bridges Across Jazz Lines…

When you combine an accomplished vocalist, an accomplished pianist, and accomplished arranger all in one individual, you have the dynamic Diane Marino. M&M Records Recording Artist Diane Marino has recorded, performed, and shared the stage with jazz legends Houston Person, Joe Henderson, Wycliffe Gordon, Pete Escovedo, Tania Maria, Kirk Whalum, pop music icon Felix Cavaliere and many others. Having a passion to “Build Bridges Across Jazz Lines”, Diane arranged and blended the elements of contemporary, traditional, smooth and Latin jazz with great pop standards from the sixties. This creative mosaic of music led to Diane’s 2008 Release, ‘Just Groovin’.
Critically acclaimed, “‘Just Groovin’ is a stellar collection featuring twelve wonderful re-interpretations of pop standards from the sixties. These are not copies of other versions. Diane's fantastic voice and arranging is a breath of fresh air for these tunes, reminding us once again that a great song can be interpreted in any number of styles”… Bob Perry – The Penthouse Radio.

Diane’s debut jazz quartet CD ‘A Sleepin’ Bee’ was released in 2003 and has received national acclaim charting #25 on the national JazzWeek charts as well as receiving extensive radio airplay and rave reviews. This CD offers a wide array of vocal and instrumental traditional jazz standards, Latin jazz, and Brazilian jazz (sung in Portuguese). Diane’s second CD ‘On the Street Where You Live’, released in May of 2004 has also received national acclaim charting on the national JazzWeek charts and proves once again that Diane is a natural whether playing, singing, or both. This CD will take the listener to the very depths of emotions. There is a re-current theme throughout that tells stories of love, and love lost, as well as playful gems of Latin and Brazilian jazz. Diane is joined by bandmates Frank Marino (bass), Mitch Reilly (saxes/flute), and Chris Brown (drums).
