Willie Bobo - Tomorrow Is Here

Styles: Vocal
Year: 1977
File: MP3@320K/s
Time: 35:13
Size: 81,5 MB
Art: Front

Willie Bobo's only LP for Blue Note came at a point well past the label's heyday, when crossover was its primary focus. Hence Tomorrow Is Here has a pronounced '70s R&B/funk feel, with synthesizers, envelope followers, electric pianos, guitars and occasional strings interwoven with Bobo's steady Latin congas, timbales and self-effacing vocals. But there are a few gems to be found here one in particular. The leadoff track "Suitcase Full Of Dreams" is a great, haunting, Latin-accented song about a journeyman musician's life on the road that should have become a standard but is now almost completely forgotten. Karma's Reggie Andrews sits in on keyboards to give the record its contemporary sound; the other participants are L.A. sessionmen. Bobo's engaging personality, the injected Latin element, and "Suitcase" are what makes this otherwise dated record come alive.

Personnel: Willie Bobo - vocals, percussion; Gary Grant, Ron King, Nolan Smith - trumpet; George Bohanon, Thurman Green - trombone; Ray Pizzi, Ernie Watts - saxophone; Gary Herbig - reeds; Reggie Andrews, Larry Farrow, David Garfield - keyboards; Dennis Budimir, John Cadrecha, Craig McMullen, Sidney Muldrow, Curtis Robertson Jr. - guitar; Dean Cortez, Jim Hughart, David Troncoso - bass; Gary Denton, James Gadson, Jeff Porcaro, Carlos Vega - drums; Victor Pantoja - percussion; Sandi Erwin, Benard Ighner - vocals

David Garfield's mission statement is "I make music." And "make music" he does, as a world-renowned keyboard artist, producer, and composer. Be it jazz, rock, funk, or world beat - he is the creative force behind the production of many internationally acclaimed recordings. Whether working as a Musical Director for other artists or Performing or Recording with one of his own bands, David (known to some as "Creatchy") is constantly and consistently involved in creating music for the listening enjoyment and pleasure of music lovers everywhere. "Giving Back" is Garfield's most current Creatchy Records release, which once again features world-class musicians and artists. Recorded in both Los Angeles and New York, these 13 hot new tracks reflect a fresh direction for his West Coast Sound. Enjoying regular air-play in the U.S., Japan, Europe, and Australia, the response to "Giving Back" has been overwhelming and its popularity with listeners continues to grow David's international fan base. The extraordinary release Tribute to Jeff, a 80 member all-star memorial to famed Grammy winning drummer Jeff Porcaro, marks David Garfield's solo debut under his own name. The album's fascinating breadth of styles, arrangements and top name band member contributions are a fitting culmination and reflection of Garfield's three decade plus career-span notable for his amazing genre-to-genre diversity, all-star collaborations and success as a lead performer, composer, arranger and musical director for some of popular music's leading artists. Garfield has one of those who's who, what's what resumes that begs the question, what HASN'T he done? Over the span of his career, he's scored and recorded for films ("Annie," "Always" with J.D. Souther), Television ("Fame" and its five accompanying "Kids from Fame" recordings), and commercials (Coca Cola, McDonald's, Seven Up, Mitsubishi). He's produced over 50 albums and appeared on over 100, with such artists as Cher, Boz Scaggs, Larry Carlton, Spinal Tap, The Manhattan Transfer, Keiko Matsui, The Rippingtons, and Smokey Robinson; performed with Earl Klugh, Michael McDonald, Nancy Wilson, Oleta Adams, Brenda Russell, Dianne Reeves, and Michael Bolton and was musical director for George Benson (from 1986-90, 2000-2004); appeared on The Tonight Show, Arsenio Hall, Solid Gold, Jimmy Kimmel, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Soul Train; and has composed and recorded hundreds of original compositions.

As if that array of challenges weren't enough to satisfy his creative urges, Garfield has led several popular rock / jazz / funk / world beat fusion bands in Los Angeles since his arrival in the mid-70s. The first of these was Karizma, which he formed with top session players Carlos Vega, Lenny Castro, Mike Landau and Jimmy Johnson. Karizma played sold out club dates in L.A. for years and released six albums to great success in Japan, Australia, and throughout Europe. There have been many incarnations of the band over the years. One version which was David with Vinnie Colaiuta, Neil Stubenhaus, and Michael Landau was recorded live at the Modern Drummer Festival 2000 and is available as a DVD. This is currently the only publicly available footage of the band. Some of the highlights for Karizma over the years have been the release of their first CD in 1983 in Japan, appearance at Sadao Watanabe's Bravas Club in 1986 with Jeff Lorber and the Yellowjackets, use of their first single "Say You Will" for the Nissan Sylvia car campaign, two European tours in 2000 and 30th Anniversary tour of Japan in 2005. Garfield and longtime friend / collaborator, percussionist Lenny Castro, formed Los Lobotomys in 1985 along with Toto members Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather, bassist Nathan East, and reedman Brandon Fields. This band has also met with great success in L.A. and abroad. In 1994, Los Lobotomys released its second CD "The Candyman." The project featured Fee Waybill from the Tubes and drummer Simon Phillips (The Who / Jeff Beck) and the band embarked on a sell out tour of Europe and Japan, sharing stages with Peter Gabriel, Aerosmith, and others. As is typical of his musical resume, Garfield has worked on a number of unique projects over the past few years, both at home, in Europe and Japan. The Los Lobotomys tour led to a scoring assignment on the German TV show "Balko", and he has produced various Japanese artists in addition to working with top Italian singing star Eros Ramazzotti. Garfield has also performed at Keyboard Magazine's 20th Anniversary Concert at the NAMM show alongside Bruce Hornsby and Joe Zawinul; played at the Modern Drummer magazine's anniversary concert with Steve Ferrone; sat in with Isaac Hayes and The Blues Brothers at a House of Blues benefit concert; released two instructional videos on how to play rock and roll keyboards and released a book, Pop and Rock Keyboards. He's also written and / or recorded background music for the syndicated TV shows "Sentinel," "Gideon's Crossing," "Good Day L.A.," and the trailer for the Billy Crystal - Robin Williams comedy "Father's Day." In between these gigs, he was always writing, recording, and performing his own music. Garfield also formed a production company, Creatchy Productions.

With access to the top studio musicians and state of the art technological equipment, they have offered modern production values to both commercial and experimental projects. Creatchy Productions has produced numerous projects for various artists, Television & Films. By continuing to delve into new technologies and to craft world music with Contemporary Jazz and Vocals, Garfield has secured his niche as an international visionary in contemporary music. At first glance, all of these diverse projects may seem to have little in common with his earliest gigs touring and recording with Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard and Tom Scott. But in his 40's, the Chicago born, New York and St. Louis bred Garfield can summarize his entire, admittedly all encompassing, career in three simple words: "I make music. That's my mission statement. Things developed slowly over time, till I was playing every different kind of music in unique situations. Always going against the grain, doing music that may not have been the in thing at the time but hanging around until it became popular". "It all goes back to when I was seven years old, first learning the piano," he adds. "There seemed like a great spiritual connection there, and I felt compelled to keep playing. I started my life playing rock, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk and started meeting more and more jazz musicians in St. Louis which made jazz a logical second love for me. It's been an incredible education." Currently living in the Los Angeles area, David always strives to expand his talents while pursuing a wide range of activities whether it be performing with his own bands, as a guest player with other popular artists, or producing artists / groups such as Oleta Adams, Flora Purim, and Los Lobotomys. In addition, he writes and produces his own music and is looking forward to several new Creatchy Records projects to be released in the coming year. Due to Garfield's diverse musical background and versatility, he has earned the respect of both his peers and critics alike and is one of the most in-demand musicians in the world today. http://www.creatchy.com/DG_pages/DG_bio.html

David Garfield, the guiding light for the jazz-fusion band Karizma, unveils Jazz: Outside the Box. on 2018. He’s not one to stand still as he’s an in-demand player, and has been musical director for George Benson, as well as a solo star in his own right.

Jazz: Outside the Box is a labor of love for the Los Angeles-based keyboardist. He has recorded more than four discs worth of music for the on-going Outside the Box project. Jazz: Outside the Box follows three singles released in 2017: A cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Go Home” featuring Kirk Whalum and Paul Jackson Jr.; “Jamming,” a Bob Marley cover with Mike Campbell; and the original tune “I Lied” he co-wrote with Smokey Robinson for vocalist J. Paris.

The Sting classic “Fragile” kicks things off in fine form. David Garfield’s piano centered arrangement is elegant. Touches of percussion by Kevin Ricard and acoustic bass by Carlos del Puerto move things along, while vocalist Michael McDonald provides an understated charm which is perfectly fitting. John Clayton arranged and conducted the string section on this, and it majestically intertwines with the song.

“In a Sentimental Mood” adds a Latin jazz flavor as percussionist and bandleader Poncho Sanchez adds congas, shakers and his unmistakable flare to bring the proceedings to a simmer. Garfield’s acoustic piano supports the tenor saxophone and trumpet, while the vibraphone toys with the melody. Garfield’s production and arranging allow each player to shine, while they support the song.

Joe Porcaro and Robbie Wyckoff get the same opportunity. Their interpretation of “Roxanne” defies expectations. The trumpet kicks of this song’s melodic core, before the band swings into the familiar tension of the song. Touches of Hammond B-3 support David Garfield’s piano. The band is in full swing mode before the backing vocals enter to support the musical bliss. Wyckoff’s lead vocal is perfect as it never attempts to replicate the original, and Porcaro’s drums (instead of his usual percussion additions) are always a welcome addition to any song. Carmen Grillo fills out the vocals to make this even more of a treat.

Bass, piano and guitar dance with each other in “Rainbow Seeker,” a Joe Sample composition. The late Chuck Loeb provides delicate leads as his electric guitar works magic with the melody. Steve Jordon reminds everyone why he’s so many artists’ first-call drummer. Garfield’s piano, Loeb’s guitar and Jordon’s drums conspire to lift the song to the stars.

Joe Porcaro returns on “Stolen Moments” but, this time, Tom Scott’s tenor is Porcaro’s and Garfield’s playmate. The song’s slow methodical groove is supported by a big band horn chart that flaunts jazz tradition while bringing in something new. Again, Garfield shows off his arranging chops as tenor sax, alto, baritone weave seamlessly with trombone and trumpet. Scott’s tenor solo smokes, as he moves the tempo forward.

The horns have a Steely Dan-meets-Chicago flare, with Chuck Findley and Nick Lane adding trumpet and trombone, respectively. Original Steely Dan guitarist Denny Dias makes a surprise and welcome appearance, going on a series of fluid runs. By the time David Garfield weaves in his acoustic solo, you can’t help but realize the song – and, indeed, all of Garfield’s Jazz: Outside the Box – is something special.

“Sophisticated Lady” features Sanchez again on congas, and an understated lead male vocal. Garfield ties in a full horn section but leaves solo space for the great Pete Christlieb. Christlieb does not disappoint as his bars of pure jazz delight hover above Sanchez’s conga and Garfield’s piano like angels above the clouds.

Karizma members Michael Landau and Vinnie Colaiuta make an appearance on “Prophecy.” The song has a fusion feel with an early drum solo by Colaiuta, nice chunky guitar fills by Landau and a mid-song solo. David Garfield sticks with his acoustic piano as the song builds, yet “Prophecy” seems almost out of place surrounded by the more contemporary jazz selections.

Jason Scheff, the long-time former bassist of Chicago, shows off his considerable jazz chops to “Song For My Father.” His bass is melodic, as its dances with Doors drummer John Densmore’s laid back rim work. Scheff also takes a turn at the mic, lending his unmistakable tenor to the mix. Denny Dias is also along for the ride. Dias, who appears on Garfield’s Porcaro-related Tribute to Jeff album is as tasteful as ever, adding even a touch of “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” to the melody – even if he didn’t play on that Steely Dan song. The song’s samba beat adds another dimension to Jazz: Outside the Box, which at 17 songs covers a lot of ground.

Jazz: Outside the Box is a fascinating and often exhilarating look at David Garfield’s vision of straight-ahead jazz. Yet it’s only a tease as Garfield plans three more Outside the Box releases covering contemporary jazz, voice and fusion. If Jazz: Outside the Box is any indication, we are in for a treat. ~by Preston Frazier

This classic collections of jazz standards is performed by some of Los Angeles' top jazz musicians, including John Guerin, Chuck Domanico, Abraham Laboriel, Bob Sheppard, Walt Fowler, Terry Trotter, Michael Landau and Brandon Fields. Produced by keyboardist David Garfield, "Recollections" includes contemporary arrangements of such songs as "An Englishman in New York".

Garfield has one of those who's who, what's what resumes that begs the question, what HASN'T he done? Over the span of his career, he's scored and recorded for films ("Annie," "Always" with J.D. The tragic death of Princess Diana reminded everyone of the impact a single person can have, and in turn, Elton John's moving tribute at her funeral reflected the great role music can play as emotional catharsis. Tribute to Jeff by David Garfield & Friends achieves that for all those who participated, but is in many ways the antithesis of the rewritten "Candle in the Wind," vigorously celebrating the life of multiple Grammy-winning drummer and first-call L.A. session cat Jeff Porcaro rather than choosing to mourn the tragedy of his early death in 1992 at age 38. Though best known for his skinwork in the pop supergroup Toto, Porcaro's influence on the music scene ranged beyond the light pop/rock the band was known for; he grew up on jazz and his diverse timekeeping skills were tapped by everyone from Boz Scaggs, Bruce Springsteen, and Don Henley to Stan Getz and Larry Carlton. He was also the backbone of the longstanding L.A. club-hopping band Los Lobotomys, the fusion-oriented '80s and early-'90s answer to Tom Scott & the L.A. Express featuring pianist Garfield and Toto member Steve Lukather on guitar (Joe Sample would occasionally sit in on second keyboard). In his two decades on the scene, Porcaro made a wealth of friends from all genres, ranging from hard rock to soul, blues, and straight-ahead jazz. Garfield, a veteran of the L.A. scene known for his long-term stint as George Benson's musical director, recalls his late friend as "the ultimate team player, never a forefront kind of guy, with a special camaraderie with musicians." As ringleader, arranger, and producer of the project, as well as lead performer, Garfield succeeds in capturing that sort of ensemble spirit. With 75 musicians participating, the pianist faced a four-month logistical nightmare of studio schedule-crunching in L.A., Nashville, and New York, but, using Porcaro as a muse (by virtue of lighting candles and occasionally playing cassettes of the guest of honor's interviews), Garfield & Friends pull off the ultimate wake, a remarkably all-encompassing, frequently unpredictable overview that, well, Porcaro would have doubtless killed to play on. ~ Jonathan Widran http://www.allmusic.com/album/tribute-to-jeff-porcaro-mw0000026486

The Los Angeles based keyboard player David Garfield has a long career as a musical director, arranger, composer and producer behind him, and he is still one of the 'Cats' that you always see playing local clubs such as The Baked Potato, Cafe Cordiale, La Ve Lee. You'll also find him on world tours with big acts with likes of George Benson.  Over the span of his career, he's scored and recorded for films ('Annie' and 'Always' with J.D. Souther), Television ('Fame' and its five accompanying 'Kids from Fame' recordings), and commercials (Coca Cola, McDonald's, Seven Up). He has produced many albums and appeared on several as a keyboard player, arranger and composer. Along with his active recording career he toured with Earl Klugh, Michael McDonald, Nancy Wilson, Oleta Adams/Luther Vandross, Brenda Russell and many local L.A. acts and has been the musical director for George Benson and Dianne Reeves. He also appeared on The Tonight Show, Arsenio Hall and Solid Gold, and has composed and recorded more than 200 original compositions.  As if that array of challenges weren't enough to satisfy his creative urges, Garfield has led several popular bands rock/jazz/funk/world beat fusion bands in Los Angeles since his arrival in the mid-70s. The first of these was Karizma, which he formed with top session players Carlos Vega, Lenny Castro, Mike Landau and Jimmy Johnson. Karizma played sold out club dates in L.A. for years and released four albums ('Dream Come True', 'Cuba,' 'All The Way Live,' and 'Arms of Love') to great success in Japan, Australia and throughout Europe. At one point, Karizma, which still regroups every so often, also toured extensively, including dates with Sadao Watanabe, Jeff Lorber and the Yellowjackets.

Garfield and longtime friend/collaborator, guitarist Steve Lukather from Toto, formed Los Lobotomys in 1985, and this band has also met with great success in L.A. and abroad. In 1994, Garfield and Lukather produced the guitarist's second solo album 'The Candyman' on Sony International. The project featured Fee Waybill from the Tubes and Simon Phillips, drummer for Toto, and the band embarked on a sell out tour of Europe and Japan, sharing stages with Peter Gabriel, Aerosmith and others. As is typical of his musical resume, Garfield has worked on a number of unique projects over the past few years, both at home, in Europe and Japan. The Los Lobotomys tour led to a long-term scoring assignment on a German TV show, and he has produced various Japanese artists in addition to working with top Italian singing star Eros Ramazzotti. Garfield has also performed at Keyboard Magazine's 20th Anniversary Concert at the NAMM show alongside Bruce Hornsby and Joe Zawinul; played at the Modern Drummer magazine's anniversary concert with Steve Ferrone; scored the syndicated TV show 'Sentinel'; sat in with Isaac Hayes and The Blues Brothers at a House of Blues benefit concert; released two DCI instructional videos on how to play rock and roll keyboards; written music for the trailer for the Billy Crystal-Robin Williams comedy 'Father's Day' with James Newton-Howard, and background cues for Good Day L.A. In between these gigs, he was pouring over the logistics and finally the recording sessions for the Tribute to Jeff release. Garfield also formed a production company, Creatchy Productions. With access to the top studio musicians and state of the art technology, they have offered modern production values to both commercial and experimental projects. Creatchy Productions has released many projects by various artists, and has accessed the Japanese and European market. By continuing to craft world music with Contemporary Jazz and to delve into new international technologies, David Garfield has secured his niche as a visionary in contemporary music.

At first glance, all of these diverse projects may seem to have little in common with his earliest gigs touring and recording with Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard and Tom Scott. The Chicago born, New York and St. Louis bred Garfield can summarize his entire, admittedly all encompassing career in three simple words: 'I make music. That's my mission statement. Things developed slowly over time, till I was playing every different kind of music in unique situations. Always going against the grain, doing music that may not have been the 'in' thing at the time but hanging around until it became popular.'It all goes back to when I was seven years old, first learning the piano,' he adds. 'There seemed like a great spiritual connection there, and I felt compelled to keep playing. I started my life playing rock, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk and started meeting more and more jazz musicians in St. Louis which made jazz a logical second love for me. It's been an incredible education.' David Garfield has led many musical projects and one of the cornerstones in his career is the 'Tribute To Jeff' project released in 1997. On May 8th 1992, music lost one of the greatest drummers ever, Jeff Porcaro. He was a big part of the west coast music and L.A. scene through the 70s and 80s. Jeff Porcaro was like a magnet, attracting attention from musicians and fans, and today he still is 'King Of The Groove' because of his very tight drum playing. Making 'Tribute To Jeff' album required a lot of hard work and for David Garfield it took 5 years to finally put the record together and release it. There are many well-known musicians on this album and most of them have played with Jeff Porcaro on albums, tours and gigs. David Garfield has always been very close to the Porcaro family, so he was the right person to make this great album. David also hosts the yearly Carlos Vega Memorial Birthday, a tribute to his friend Carlos Vega, who introduced him to the Los Angeles music business. Carlos Vega passed away in 1997 and David Garfield keeps the spirit alive with the annual concert every year in December at a local club in Los Angeles. In 2005, David Garfield and his production company Creatchy Records released the albums 'Tribute To Jeff Revisited' and 'Seasons Of Change', and later that year he went to Europe with Los Lobotomys for a week of gigs and clinics in Denmark. David is currently working on new releases from both Karizma and Los Lobotomys and will be going to Europe to perform with Russ Miller, Eric Marienthal and John Peña in the spring of 2007. https://www.last.fm/music/David+Garfield/+wiki
