As the lead vocalist of her self-titled Washington, D.C.-based jazz ensemble, Lori Williams is well regarded in our area for her soothing voice and for performing incredible sets of jazz and R&B. She has also taught vocal music in D.C. public schools for more than 20 years, and is beloved by generations of musicians. Born and raised in Southeast D.C., Williams has been heralded for her voice since she was a young student at Hampton University. Over the years, she has played some of the top places in D.C., as well as venues around the country and the world.

She has directed numerous choirs, such as the National Diamond Girls Jazz Choir (which performed during the Inauguration Ceremony for President George Bush), the Sagamihara Christian Fellowship Gospel Choir in Japan and several gospel choirs throughout the area. “When I started out, I met with two professors who introduced me to jazz and then I was on a radio show on campus, and got the chance to be the jazz program director and hear some music and play some music, and just fell in love with it,” Williams said. “I felt like jazz was my voice and [something] I could identify with.”

Williams will hold a CD release party at City Winery on Sept. 29, introducing fans to her fifth album, “Full Circle,” a return to traditional jazz music. “The music actually came out in July but I was over in Europe at the time so I didn’t get the chance to share the music with people here at home, and I want to be able to showcase my CD to the good folks in Washington, D.C.,” she said. “I’m going to do a couple of tunes off the new CD, but other tunes from other CDs I have put out over the years.” The album offers classic standards such as “My Funny Valentine,” “Evergreen” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” that are done in unique ways and showcase some of D.C.’s best jazz musicians.

“It’s a return to a love of mine, which is traditional jazz,” Williams said. “My father passed last year, and the gentleman who produced the CD, Alan Johnson, found a recording that my dad did in 2012 and we did a Nat King Cole/Natalie Cole-esque kind of vibe, giving me an opportunity to sing along with my dad on a song he put together.” Williams said picking the rest of the set list came from the songs she fell in love with in her late teens and early 20s the tunes that made her fall in love with jazz. “For example, Barbra Streisand was one of the first women singers whose voice I was absolutely captivated by, so I’m doing ‘Evergreen,’” she said. “And because of what’s happening in our world today, ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ is a very apropos selection.”

She’s no stranger to City Winery, having played this venue three times and the one in Atlanta a couple of times as well. “The ambiance there is absolutely incredible. Also, I love wine,” Williams said. “I’ve traveled to Europe and have been introduced to different types of wines, and I just love how sophisticated City Winery is. People are coming there with the expectancy of hearing great music and enjoying great food and wine. It’s a good combination.” Williams is making a big change in her life this fall, as she is relocating to Georgia to become a full-time musician, artist, and symposium director for colleges and universities teaching students about the essence of jazz and lyrical content through her commissioned program “Positive Music For Positive Minds.”

“My dad’s no longer here, my mom’s no longer here, and I need something new,” she said. “I’ll be coming back but sometimes in order to come back to one’s hometown and be truly seen, you need to disappear.” One thing that will not change is her love of being onstage. “I love sharing an experience about peace and positivity,” Williams said. “I’m still learning. When you’re a performer, you are using every part of who you are. I’m grateful that I am part of a circle that is giving me advice and I can surround myself with great producers and musicians, and always enjoy singing live.” Keith Loria http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/lori-williams-comes-full-circle/article_0c8d19ee-e141-11e9-9a26-9758114f0c9a.html

Setlist unabashedly plays favorites, and Lori Williams is by any measure near the top of the favorites list. This D.C. vocalist’s instrument contains the kind of nuances that one could get lost in. She has the kind of attenuation and subtlety that we associate with jazz singing instantly a kind of jazz-vocal ‘discipline,’ for lack of a better term. But Williams slips in hints and sometimes dead give aways that she has packed away the kind of soul power that would make her a tremendous R&B or gospel singer. Perhaps it’s a sort of vocalist’s twist on Ernest Hemingway’s “iceberg theory”: What you hear on the surface is only about 10 percent of what’s really there. As it happens, what is there is crystalline clarity, perhaps the most precise articulation of any singer in town, and a range that will, when she runs it, produce shivers. "She's got a soft-edged, creamy voice that's a natural vehicle for introspection, but also one that you could happily curl up and get lost in. It's stunning, supple subtle, sumptuous, soulful music - let's call that the five Ss of Lori Williams, shall we?"~Michael J. West - The Washington City Paper https://www.lorijazz.com/

"A NEW BOOK is a wonderful collection of thoughtfully crafted messages of love and new beginnings. Lori Williams' beautiful voice glides soulfully and effortlessly across a smooth and inviting rhythmic landscape with messages of abundance, joy, and affirmation. This project is food for the soul and a soundtrack for your daily groove!" ~ Dianne Reeves

Lori A. Williams is a lot more than just a singer, songwriter, and performer. If you were to judge her on these things alone, you would have to conclude you where dealing with one of the finest artists of our era, an eventual legend and, I have no doubt, time will prove me right. I think music aficionados who listen to this project will agree that these tracks step her toward this destiny. Let me add a little fuel to this fire. Lori's lead vocal recording is all original - no vocal overdubs, no re-tracking, and almost no vocal fixes (come on... no one is perfect). When we recorded the material, I had her record "scratch vocals" with the intent of throwing them out and recording the REAL lead vocals later (as is customary). Well, that's not what happened... you are listening to the unaltered scratch vocal. Now I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence; but everything we listen to these days has been altered, fixed, produced, tracked, squeezed, tuned and composited To Death!! NotT this recording. This is the real deal; and that makes this recording astounding because even if all the usual stuff was done, it would be a great cd. The honesty of this recording moves it into the amazing column. Not only is the lead vocal honest, but so is the rest of the recording. In fact, it's only a hair away from being totally live. Many songs are the first take. Now remember, I said that Lori is more than a singer, songwriter, and performer, because as we approached the end of the project, I started to realize her tremendous gift as a producer. Lori's lack of ego, and a willingness to recognize other peoples' abilities, and trust in both herself and those she works with, is a gift rarely seen. Not only does she have a voice and performance talent similar to a Judy Garland, but if she keeps producing recordings, she might also be compared to Quincy Jones. I could go on and on particularly concerning Lori's production capabilities, but lets just say that she is completely unaware of her ability... Like a duck to water, effortless and commanding. These traits show up in the product. After saying all this, I think the music says it better than I can; but the listeners need to know the circumstances behind this recording. It makes it all the more awesome. Brad Baerwald, Studio 51 http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/loriwilliamsmusic

Eclipse of the Soul - Liner Notes:  "In the ever-crowded field of aspiring jazz vocalists it is always such a pleasure to encounter an emerging artist who stands out in the crowd. Lori Williams is one such artist deserving of your attention. Her latest effort, which by now ought to be spinning merrily and impressively in your CD player or on your personal stereo device, is "Eclipse of the Soul," and she's clearly coming from a more diverse and more optimistic place than she was with her previous effort "Healing Within." At that point in 2010 Lori was obviously under the influence of some personal pathos that dripped from pretty much every track of that nonetheless quite striking release. Despite the heavy load she was clearly carrying when she made "Healing Within" (as if that title wasn't clue enough!), it has often been the case that artists in the midst of personal challenges deliver some of their most penetrating work. With "Eclipse of the Soul" Lori has come out on the other side of that pathos, clear of mind, bursting with spirit, and delivering her music with a lovely smile.  Take the opener, the familiar chestnut "Body and Soul" for example. That standard, floating on the wings of Allyn Johnson's churchy, swinging piano, is finely capped in a short reprise later on the disc. The key to Lori's take is an uncharacteristic uptempo arrangement; a choice she made to bring more punch and a fresher approach to the well-known melody. She sings of "surrender", and you'll quickly relinquish your ears to Lori and her joyous energy as she gets things underway with great joy; and dig her chuckle at the close! As for the #7 reprise, "I thought it would be a cool segue to the next half of the CD," says Lori, "almost a brief reminder of the opener, but the flavor is a bit different."

Inspired by The Emotions memorable reading of the Skip Scarborough vehicle "Don't Ask My Neighbors," Lori proves there is indeed gold to be mined from 70s pop. She's quite relaxed in her passion, even crafting attractive multi-tracked harmonizing to the mix. Tracy Cutler's appealing soprano saxophone rides first class over Benjie Porecki's B-3 organ and synth string bed. Not only has she cannily chosen a program of compatible familiars and new challenges, but Lori also knows how to keep good, challenging instrumental company. Pianist William Knowles' "What Was I To You" is dedicated to the late Saltman-Knowles drummer Jimmy "Junebug" Jackson. "I just wanted to dedicate this one to him," says the genial, vivacious singer. "It's one of my favorite William Knowles' tunes and he was gracious to allow me to record it." One of the hallmarks of this record is Lori's programmatic range. Not intent to simply lay down a series of standards with typical piano-bass-drums jazz date accompaniment, she mixes her partners, engaging the cream of the DC area's rich jazz crop to assist her, and warmly welcomes her children onto the date. Daughter Lauren provides attractive flute and vocal harmonies to her arrangement of Lori's original "Eclipse of the Soul," to which our leader lends further distinction with some spoken word. And her 4-year old son Yusef Khalil tags a sweet message on the end of Lori's original "Mother Black Crow." Additionally three of Ms. Williams' students at Woodrow Wilson HS were thrilled to make their studio debut, acquitting themselves quite nicely on "Mother Black Crow." ~ http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/loriwilliams1

Not only are we welcomed into the parlor of Lori Williams the songwriter, she has also carefully delivered a few somewhat unlikely choices to this date; such as a surprising arrangement of the Beethoven classic "Moonlight Sonata," christened "The Moonlit Sky" for this occasion. "You'll notice the latter half expresses my jazzier feel to this classical selection," Lori enthuses. And who could forget Louis Armstrong's touching rendition of the Edith Piaf classic "La Vie En Rose"? Lori puts her own personal stamp on that lovely continental melody as well. One comes away from "Eclipse of the Soul" rewarded by the obviously upward arc of Lori Williams artistic development, and mightily impressed at her programmatic skills as well. Here's a singer who is definitely on the rise. Listen out for Lori Williams!" ~ Willard Jenkins, Open Sky Jazz/Home of the Independent Ear/WPFW-FM
