This is an album for anyone who loves jazz singing but feels a little starved of late. Sure there are some great singers around making interesting noises, but they can make demands on the listener too. What’s on offer either verges on the esoteric, or there’s too strong an admixture of soul, or the album is largely made up of the singer’s own (often uncompromisingly subjective) compositions. The difference between a singer and a jazz singer is that the latter always swings. ‘Phrasing like a horn’ is a well worn cliché but it serves the purpose of defining the critical essence of jazz singing, a genre which is perhaps more complex to understand and requires more of its audience than ‘popular’ singing. And the ability to invest sometimes banal lyrics with meaning and worth is another weapon essential weapon in a jazz singer’s armouryThe difference between Lee Gibson and many another jazz singer is that she swings in so many different ways, sometimes subtle, sometimes sensuous, sometimes joyful but always musical. Throughout this CD she never sacrifices respect for her listeners or fellow musicians; each song is presented with love and clarity, pitched to perfection.

Lee’s uninhibited delivery and unstoppable swing never occlude her concern for the meaning of the lyrics. There’s an overall excitement about the album, from which you can’t help getting the impression that each musician can hardly wait to join her. This is musicians’ singer. Every tune on this CD will reward repeated listening, right through to the exhilarating, high octane I Only Have Eyes For You with its cross rhythms and breakneck tempo."

Barbara Jay comes from a musical family. Her father played trumpet with many of the leading bands of the time. She took to singing naturally at an early age and was soon to be singing with the big names herself  Ronnie Scott, Don Lusher, Tommy Whittle, Digby Fairweather and Kenny Ball's Band on T.V. As a solo Jazz singer she has shared the billing at Ronnie Scott's Club with Horace Silver, Pharoah Saunders and Dave Holland. She also appears in Cabaret on The Saga Ruby Cruise Ship and P&O Oriana. In 1970 she was chosen to sing with the legendary Benny Goodman and his orchestra, with whom she appeared at many of the major European cities, ie. Paris, Milan, Copenhagen, Zurich etc. In 1993 Barbara devised the very successful "Ella Fitzgerald Songbook Show" which has appeared at major venues and festivals throughout Britain and also with her own quartet at the Pizza on the Park Knightsbridge. Barbara has reached a point in her career where she enjoys singing without having to indulge in gimmickry or momentary trends... an enjoyment that she passes on to her audience.

B. 5 March 1950, Watford, Hertfordshire, England. Gibson began her show business career as a singer and dancer, performing in many of the top nightspots in London’s West End. These included the Talk Of The Town, where she headlined and was heard by a BBC radio producer who booked her for her first jazz broadcast. During succeeding years she made over 1, 000 broadcasts for the BBC and toured with several big bands, including those led by Syd Lawrence and Don Lusher and the BBC Radio Big Band. Her parallel career as a session singer extended into films and television and she also appeared at seven Royal Command Variety Shows. She was a member of the folk rock group Chorale, recording a self-titled album for Arista Records in 1980, and the single, ‘Riu Riu’, which charted in several European countries.  Meanwhile, Gibson extended her reputation as a solo singer throughout Europe, performing at concerts and on radio and television with leading orchestras. In Finland she sang with the UMO Jazz Orchestra, in Denmark with the Danish Radio Big Band, directed by Thad Jones, in the Netherlands with the Skymasters and the Metropole Orchestra, recording 1998’s Night Songs with the latter, and in Germany with the WDR Orchestra and the Francy Boland Band, conducted by Lalo Schifrin. She also sang the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at a Royal Gala concert in London. Her jazz festival performances have included Munich, Sydney, Montreux, Birmingham, Cork and Grimsby, appearing at the latter with Michael Brecker. Gibson sings with elegant charm, her interpretations of lyrics being eloquent and understanding. Adjusting to the needs of the material and the nature of the performance, she can deliver the popular repertoire with warmth and enormous confidence while her jazz work is suffused with an intense yet subtle sense of swing.
