It has been a while since Danish singer, Sinne Eeg, joined Stunt Records' roster of artists with the album Face the Music (2014), but in a way, her latest album is a new beginning. All sails have been set to make Dreams (2017) the international breakthrough that the singer deserves. In fact, Eeg has already achieved quite a lot, winning prizes and toured internationally, but this album, a partnership between ArtistShare and Stunt Records, signals a rise in ambition. First of all, esteemed jazz writer Neil Tesser has been brought in to write the liner notes and in keeping with the genre, he does not hold back the praise, calling her "the real deal" as he notices her: "emerald tones both light and dark, sometimes throaty or bitingly clear." Tesser touches upon Eeg's biography and mentions her inspiration from church, her fascination with the Great American Songbook, her ability to write her own material and, not least, her pure musicality that comes through in a voice that is like an instrument.

Her voice is allowed to shine in a band that includes her regular musical companion, pianist, Jacob Christoffersen, and an A-list band featuring the drum-whisperer Joey Baron, Larry Koonse's crisp guitar and not least the superb backing of bassist Scott Colley. Together they explore a repertoire that covers Eeg's self-penned songs, including the political ballad "Aleppo," dedicated to the children of Syria, and the ethereal word-less title track where Eeg sings lines in tandem with Koonse. She also shows her knack for writing a good ballad. "Time to Go" has something of the quality of "Waiting for Dawn," a jewel in Eeg's own catalog. There is also room for tried and true standards like "Anything Goes," "I'll Remember April," "Falling in Love with Love" and "What Is This Thing Called Love," which Eeg tackles with effortless musicality and class, and class is exactly the keyword that describes this album. It shows that Eeg is not only one of Denmark's finest jazz singers, but also a voice that should be able to court an international audience. ~ Jakob Baekgaard https://www.allaboutjazz.com/stunt-records-in-the-spotlight-enrico-pieranunzi-and-sinne-eeg-by-jakob-baekgaard.php

Sinne Eeg (born in Lemvig, Denmark in 1977) is a Danish jazz vocalist and composer. Sinne Eeg was admitted at the Academy of Music in Esbjerg in 1997, from where she graduated in 2003. She has received a number of positive reviews in the national and international press, and is considered among the best female jazz vocalists currently in Scandinavia. She has composed many of her own songs, and although she usually sings in English, she has also performed and recorded songs in Danish. As part of her musical studies, Sinne studied with American singer Janet Lawson in New York.

Sinne Eeg has won the Danish Music Awards prize in the category Best Danish Vocal Jazz Album of the Year three times: in 2007, 2010 and 2014, for her albums Waiting for Dawn, Don't Be So Blue and Face the Music. She also received the Ben Webster Prize on 28 March 2014, as the first vocalist ever. The Webster Foundation describes her as "a true jazz singer, who both shows sensitivity, improvisational skills, maturity, broad range and timing in her singing.". Sinne has toured Europe, Japan, China and the United States. The 26th of January in 2012, she sang in Brussels, accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Band, at the celebration for the beginning of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In Denmark, she regularly performs at the jazz venue of La Fontaine in Copenhagen.

Sinne Eeg’s distinctive vocals have earned her a loyal and rapidly growing fan base in her native country of Denmark and around the world. Considered the preeminent jazz vocalist in Scandinavia, Sinne has already made her mark in Japan, China, and throughout Europe with her exquisite live performances and award-winning studio recordings. Face The Music, released in 2014, earned her the Danish Music Award (Denmark’s Grammy) for Best Jazz Vocal CD, along with the Ben Webster Prize (for which Sinne was the sole female recipient for the last 30 years), and the Prix du Jazz, awarded by France’s Academie du Jazz.As a singer she is influenced by Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, but with her personal touch of soft darkness, Sinne keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music.“Eeg shows she’s steeped in tradition but pushing it in her own direction… with technique and sensitivity aplenty” Downbeat by Fred Bouchard.

“Eeg proves to be an expert in the art of inflection. She stresses a lyric in unexpected yet appropriate ways, demonstrates unerring intonation and pitch control, and shows herself to be an impressive improviser and communicator. Her vocals are never overbearing, but there’s no doubt about the fact that she’s in the driver’s seat.” All About Jazz by Dan Bilawsky  http://sinnemusic.com/about/

Sinne Eeg & The Danish Radio Big Band - We've Just Begun

(5:40) 10. To a New Day

Any vocalist who can summon the world-class Danish Radio Big Band to serve as a backup group must have something special to offer. Sinne Eeg, whose lustrous voice uplifts and illuminates her ninth album, We've Just Begun, has all of that and more. Eeg, as it turns out, is a shining star in her native Denmark and if she weren't, she certainly should be. Singing mostly in English, Eeg displays a charming voice that is strong and clear and a style that is jazz-inflected but unmannered, in the image of her role models: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Anita O'Day. For comparison's sake, the contemporary vocalist who springs to mind is Roberta Gambarini, and there can be no higher compliment than that. No less than four of Eeg's earlier albums earned Danish Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album of the Year, and the impression here is that We've Just Begun should be a strong contender for Music Award No. 5. Besides singing, Eeg wrote or co-wrote half of the album's ten selections, starting with the album's opener / title song, a freewheeling swinger on which Eeg's buoyant vocal (and scat chorus) is underlined by the band and tenor saxophonist Hans Ulrik. Eeg wrote the engaging waltz, "Like a Song," which follows, and co-authored the wistful and meditative ballad, "Those Ordinary Things," with lyricist Helle Hansen.

The DRBB's rhythm section shines on "Talking to Myself," an old-line swinger on which Eeg showcases her admirable jazz chops, grooving and scatting in a style that would certainly have pleased the above-named role models. She sings in Danish on "Hvorfor er Lykken Sa Lunefuld," a melodic song from the 1937 Danish film A Consummate Gentleman, before addressing the first of three American evergreens, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things," whose even-tempered opening stanza gives way to a fiery midsection with burning solos by tenor Frederik Menzies and drummer Soren Frost. As if to show there is no limit to her virtuosity, Eeg sings the gently swaying "Samba em Comum" in English and Portuguese. The light-hearted solo is by trombonist Peter Dahlgren. The next two numbers, "Detour Ahead" and "Comes Love," were scored for Eeg by her longtime friend, the late American saxophonist / arranger Roger Neumann, to whose memory the album is dedicated. "Detour" advances slowly, lending full rein to Eeg's shapely and seductive voice, while "Comes Love" allows her to make the most of its clever and playful lyric (with more scatting thrown in for added spice). Eeg rings down the curtain with another of her compositions, the enticing, gospel-flavored anthem "To a New Day," which further underscores her impressive range and unerring timbre. Make no mistake, this is Eeg's album all the way, and she is a radiant and beguiling centerpiece. As for the Danish Radio Big Band, it is the luscious icing on the cake.

Sinne Eeg’s album ‘The Beauty Of Sadness’ is a natural follow up to the two award-winning albums before it, ‘Don’t Be So Blue’ (2010) and ‘Waiting For Dawn’ (2007). The music on the album encompasses a full dynamic range, from sublimely minimalistic (duo with bass clarinet), to elegantly grandiose through a musical partnership with ‘The Danish National Chamber Orchestra’ which since its foundation in 1939 has aimed to provide audiences with musical entertainment of the highest caliber in every conceivable genre.

Take legendary drummer Peter Erskine (world re-known for his time with bands like Weather Report and Steps Ahead) and add him to Sinne’s working band, plus a handful of top arrangers and sidemen from the international jazz scene. Combine them with ‘The Danish National Chamber Orchestra’ and put Sinne Eeg in front and in charge, both musically and conceptually, and the musical potential is almost unlimited. As Thomas Conrad from ‘All About Jazz’ in NYC describes so accurately; “Sinne Eeg is a singer with the whole package; good taste, looks, height, pipes, range, control and the ability to both scat and tell a story”

Born in Lemvig, Denmark, jazz singer Sinne Eeg graduated from the Music Conservatory of West Jutland in 2003, and subsequently studied with American jazz singers Janet Lawson and Jay Clayton in New York City. “I learned a lot from studying music intensively at the music conservatory,” she explained. “But I think a lot of my musicality comes from my childhood and teenage years where I was exposed to so much music and great music teachers. Jazz was a big part of my upbringing. I played in several local big bands (alto saxophone) when I was a teenager, and I learned a lot about the structures and phrasing of the music.”

During her musical upbringing, Eeg gravitated toward singers with lower, richer voices, like Julie London, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves. “Of course I studied all the great traditional jazz singers like Billie, Ella, Carmen, Anita and Sarah at the conservatory,” she said. “But it was also nice to have someone contemporary to look up to like Cassandra and Dianne, who respected the tradition of jazz singing but also had a fresh approach to it.” She recalled a seminal gig as a professional singer that helped launch her career. “It was a three-month engagement in Shanghai. They flew the whole band over from Denmark to play at The House Of Blues And Jazz six nights a week. During those three months I learned so much about performing in front of an audience and working with a band.”

After putting in her time for years on the road, performing at small clubs and cafes, Sinne won her first Danish Music Award for her album “Waiting For Dawn” in 2007. Her dark vocals and modern interpretation of Nordic jazz touched audiences all over Europe and Asia. Since then, Sinne has released several prize-winning albums, including her solo album “Dreams” from 2018, recorded in New York City with Scott Colley, Joey Baron, Larry Koonse and Jacob Christoffersen.

In early 2020 Sinne released one of her biggest projects ever: “We’ve Just Begun”, a winning collaboration with the 19-piece Danish Radio Big Band and her 9th album overall. The record was produced by André Fischer (Diane Schuur, Nina Simone, Natalie Cole) and mixed at the acclaimed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles by the legendary Al Schmitt (Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Ray Charles). The album has received countless international rave reviews, hovered high for many weeks on the American JazzWeek Top 50 chart, and continues to enjoy frequent airplay in all radio markets.

Sinne has many loyal fans in the US, Scandinavia and Asia, especially China and Japan. She is poised for a major breakthrough in the US, where she regularly tours. She has performed with American jazz icons including Larry Goldings, Peter Erskine and Ken Peplowski; and at storied jazz clubs including Green Mill in Chicago and Birdland in New York. The Danish songstress is versatile, equally comfortable fronting big orchestras in concert halls as well as smaller ensembles in intimate jazz clubs. Everywhere she sings Tokyo, Copenhagen, Los Angeles or Madrid audiences are mesmerized by her incandescent phrasing and scatting, all with natural, perfect pitch.

Sinne Eeg is not only a brilliant vocalist; she is also a great songwriter. Her talent for writing and composing won the prestigious Danish Carl Prize 2018 for Song Of The Year, “Aleppo”, included on her album “Dreams”. Sinne has received numerous accolades, including four Danish Music Awards, the Danish Radio P2 Jazz Prize, the Ben Webster Prize, the French Prix Du Jazz and Queen Ingrid’s Honorary Grant, personally awarded by Queen Margrethe of Denmark. https://www.highresaudio.com/de/artist/view/35462fa1-ee13-4058-a5a2-d7a156f161a4/sinne-eeg-thomas-fonnesbaek

With the very first notes on this remarkable album, the question arises why the duo combination of vocal and bass is such a rare treat. Only a few albums exclusively present this musical constellation that allows so much space for creativity and spontaneity. Some may be acquainted with Sheila Jordan’s work with bassists Steve Swallow, Harvie Swartz and Cameron Brown – or Jordan’s duo with Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen on the fine 1978 album SHEILA. When approached with technical and musical virtuosity, it is a constellation that works. Sinne Eeg and Thomas Fonnesbæk command their own natural and distinguished place on the short list of vocal/bass duos. The album marks a charming musical engagement between two virtuosic and original artists, bringing the best out in each other in fresh and congenial interpretations of classic evergreens.
One of Scandinavia’s most talented and popular vocalists, accompanied by an experienced and virtuosic bassist. They gave us a small taste of their duo work on Sinne Eeg’s latest album FACE THE MUSIC, and on EEG FONNESBÆK, they unfold their artistry throughout a full CD. Eeg constantly pushes herself toward new horizons. She never rests in rehearsed working routines. The restrictions of the duo format present a challenge that is rewarded with an exceptional musical freedom. It takes guts to perform a whole concert or record a whole CD only accompanied by a bass, but Sinne Eeg is attracted to the rich resonance of the bass and its rhythmic and harmonic drive. She embraces the sound of the bass much like the bassist caresses the strings. Sinne Eeg sings without the time-keeping of a drummer or the chords of a pianist while still retaining all her artistry and interpretive powers. Sinne and Thomas listen intensely and inspire each other and take chances. And isn’t that what jazz is all about – spontaneity, communication and interpretation?

Sinne Eeg is a cherished jazz vocalist with a list of fine recordings to her name. In 2007 she released WAITING FOR DAWN, and since then audiences and critics alike have agreed in their enthusiastic reception of her recordings and performances. She tours successfully internationally, and has received numerous awards including the DR P2 Jazz Prize (2009), and three Danish Music Awards for WATING FOR DAWN (2007), DON’T BE SO BLUE (2010) and FACE THE MUSIC (2014). In 2014 she was awarded the prestigious Ben Webster Prize and in 2015, 60 French critics paid their tribute with one of Europe’s most distinguished awards, Academie du Jazz, for FACE THE MUSIC. The world has truly discovered this great Danish vocal talent. Danish bassists have a special star on the international jazz firmament.
One of the most remarkable among the many new names is Thomas Fonnesbæk. He plays with virtuosic technique, melodic intuition, and an exquisite sound that is reminiscent of the deceased Danish jazz giant Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen. Fonnesbæk appears on more than 100 albums, and he has worked closely with jazz pianist Thomas Clausen, whose group he joined in 2006. He has been a member of Swedish pianist Lars Jansson’s Trio since 2009, and he is a popular accompanist for visiting international musicians. In 2014 he released SOUND OF MY COLORS - his debut as bandleader.

Sinne Eeg is one of the strongest new female vocalists from the Scandinavian jazz scene. With 5 albums Sinne Eeg has established herself as a Danish jazz singer with international potential.

Sinne’s distinctive vocals have earned her a loyal and ever growing fan base around the world as well as in her native country. As a singer she is influenced by Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, but with her personal touch of soft darkness, Sinne keeps the Scandinavian melancholy settled in her music. Since the release of the album “Waiting For Dawn” (2007) Sinne has won several music awards in Denmark, amongothersDanishMusicA ward (Best jazz vocal Album 2007, 2010), Danish Radio Jazz Award 2009. http://www.sinnemusic.com/

"The ravishing young Danish vocalist Sinne Eeg. Eeg has an amazing technique, coverage for all the tones she sings, a genuine jazz feeeling and an unusually large vocal range from top to bottom. Coupled with a totally obvious stage charisma, dignity and a sparkle in the eye, this really makes you surrender." (Review of Sinne Eeg + trio at Kristianstad Jazzfestival 10 Oct 2008 by Alexander Agrell, jazz journalist at Sydsvenskan (leading morning paper of South Sweden)

”A fully mature artist who dares to take chances, and succeeds with an instinctive feeling that lends credibility to everything she does.”  ~ Boris Rabinowitsch, Politiken  (Danish national daily newspaper)

”A voice that is warm and tremendously expressive sometimes revealing a touch of fragility - and whose emotional register ranges from delicate modesty to explosiveness, without falling for the temptation of over dramatizing. Add to this a talent for phrasing and a rhythmic emancipation that makes the music come alive in a way I have not experienced in any other Danish singer. It is equally rare to encounter a CD release containing a series of newly-written songs that are such gems.” ~ Boris Rabinowitsch, Politiken

”Not a single track seems superfluous; not one passage in a song seems lacking  which is why the album is so masterful. Immediately accessible, but at the same time so complex that new layers are constantly revealing themselves.” ~ Gaffa (Danish music magazine)

”A fully mature artist who dares to take chances, and succeeds with an instinctive feeling that lends credibility to everything she does.” - Boris Rabinowitsch, Politiken (Danish national daily newspaper) Sinne Eeg released Waiting For Dawn - her second album in her own name - in August 2007, four years after the release of her debut CD Sinne Eeg. Waiting For Dawn has stirred up a great deal of enthusiasm, both among critics and the listening public, and 2007 Sinne Eeg recieved a Danish Music Award (vocal jazz album of the year) for this album. ”Not a single track seems superfluous; not one passage in a song seems lacking – which is why the album is so masterful. Immediately accessible, but at the same time so complex that new layers are constantly revealing themselves.” – Gaffa (Danish music magazine) ”A voice that is warm and tremendously expressive - sometimes revealing a touch of fragility - and whose emotional register ranges from delicate modesty to explosiveness, without falling for the temptation of over dramatizing. Add to this a talent for phrasing and a rhythmic emancipation that makes the music come alive in a way I have not experienced in any other Danish singer. It is equally rare to encounter a CD release containing a series of newly-written songs that are such gems.” - Boris Rabinowitsch, Politiken Sinne Eeg has been exceptionally busy on the Danish music scene - and has also made several tours of Japan and China – during the four years that have passed between her 2003 CD debut and her 2007 release Waiting For Dawn.
