During World War 2, the Nazis banned jazz music in the Netherlands. Several youngsters wanted to preserve this music against all odds. They practised secretly, copied illegal radio broadcasts and were determined to found a school for jazz music when the war was over: the Swing College.

On Liberation Day, May 5th 1945, the Orchestra of the Dutch Swing College had its first public performance. Their members gave lectures, organised jazz meetings and started to teach jazz music. The name soon changed into Dutch Swing College Band. In 1960 the DSCBand (in the field of traditional jazz in the Netherlands) became professional and still performs worldwide to this day.http://www.dscband.nl

The Dutch Swing College Band "DSCB" is a traditional dixieland band founded on 5 May 1945 by bandleader and clarinettist/saxophonist Peter Schilperoort.

Highly successful in their native home of The Netherlands, the band quickly found an international following. It has featured such musicians as Huub Janssen (drums), Henk Bosch van Drakestein (double bass), Kees van Dorser (trumpet), Dim Kesber (saxes), Jan Morks (clarinet), Wout Steenhuis (guitar), Arie Ligthart (banjo/guitar), Jaap van Kempen (banjo/guitar), Oscar Klein (trumpet), Dick Kaart (trombone), Ray Kaart (trumpet), Bert de Kort (cornet), Bert Boeren (trombone), Rod Mason, Rob Agerbeek (piano) among many others.

The band provided the interval act for the Eurovision Song Contest 1976 presented live from Den Haag.

The band continues to tour extensively, mainly in Europe and Scandinavia, and record directed by Bob Kaper, himself a member since 1967, following the former leader, Peter Schilperoort's death on 17 November 1990. Schilperoort had led the band for more than 45 years, albeit with a five-year sabbatical from 13 September 1955, when he left to pursue an engineering career before returning to lead the band again officially on 1 January 1960.

Started on liberation day (May 5) 1945 as an amateur/student combo, the Dutch Swing College Band has grown into a worldwide known jazz ensemble. It is also the longest existing old style jazz band in the Netherlands.

The group arose from a plan by clarinetist Peter Schilperoort and pianist Frans Vink to set up a school for young jazz musicians. Initially, the band of this Dutch Swing College played jazz from the thirties, but leader Schilperoort focused more and more on older jazz styles such as New Orleans and Dixieland. After his death in 1990, it was thanks to the efforts of the new leader Bob Kaper that the group continued to exist.

Back in the original line-up of seven men, including four wind players, they give shape to the Dixieland, boogie woogies, stomps and blues songs with their own musical approach.Translate By Google

Bob Kaper (1939- ) replaced clarinet player Peter Schilperoort during an illness in 1966, and remained with the band; he has led the Dutch Swing College Band since Schilperoort's death in 1990. The fourth leader in the group's history, Kaper succeeds Frans Vink, Jr. (1945-46), Joop Schrier (1955-60), and Schilperoort (1946-55; 1960-1990). Kaper previously led the Beale Street Seven, a group he founded in 1957.

An amateur group from 1945 until turning professional in 1960, the Dutch Swing College Band reached their early peak in the late '40s, when they were tapped to accompany such jazz musicians as Sidney Bechet, Joe Venuti, and Teddy Wilson.

The Dutch Swing College Band, the leading and best-known jazz orchestra in The Netherlands, still guarantees professional performances of traditional jazz music at a world-class level. The swinging orchestra, founded on May 5th, 1945, is highly regarded with its exemplary function as the calling card of Dutch Jazz and has released more than 150 albums (a cautious calculation…).

The line-up has of course changed several times over the years, making the Dutch Swing College Band more than just an ordinary group of musicians. The word ‘institute’ is more applicable here. With refreshing arrangements in the unmistakable Dutch Swing College sound, played by a rejuvenated orchestra, the Dutch Swing College Band is energetic today like never before.

The Dutch Swing College Band is widely regarded as the most important representative of European Classic Jazz. Since it was founded, the band has distinguished itself on a number of fronts: the permanent line-up always consists of excellent and dedicated musicians so that quality is guaranteed. The music sounds organic, the band explores the musical boundaries in a virtuoso way with respect for the style of Classic Jazz. In addition to the individual musical freedom of the players, which comes into its own in improvisations, it is the musical cohesion and interaction between the musicians that are so characteristic of DSCB’s group sound. https://cityproms.nl/en/portfolio-posts/dutch-swing-college-band/

The Dutch Swing College Band comprises of: Keesjan Hoogeboom – trumpet; David Lukács – clarinet, saxophone; Bert Boeren – trombone; Peter Kanters – banjo, guitar; Adrie Braat – double bass; Anton Burger – percussion

The Dutch Swing College Band started out as an amateur-college combo on liberation day (1945, may 5th) and through the years it has grown into a worldfamous jazz ensemble that has toured all five continents to much acclaim. The DSC played a prominent role during the post-war period. At the time many youngsters fell under the spell of the original Amerian music: jazz. The band, which has existed for more than sixty years, has given concerts all over the world and the sounds have been registered on practically all types of sound recordings since 1945. The band also appeared frequently on TV and in film productions. Through the years many big names in jazz music were backed by the DSC, from Sidney Bechet, Joe Venuti and Rita Reys to Teddy Wilson.
