Hampton Hawes - Trio & Quartet 1951-1956: Live & Studio (2-Disc Set)

Hampton Hawes (p), Harper Crosby (b), Lawrence Marable (d), Joe Mondragon (b), Red Mitchell (b), Larry Bunker (d,vib), Shelly Manne (d), Clarence Jones (d), Chuck Thompson (d).

Hampton Hawes was one of the finest jazz pianists of the 1950s, a fixture on the Los Angeles scene who brought his own interpretations to the dominant Bud Powell style. In the mid- to late '40s, he played with Sonny Criss, Dexter Gordon, and Wardell Gray, among others on Central Avenue. He was with Howard McGhee's band (1950-1951), played with Shorty Rogers and the Lighthouse All-Stars, served in the Army (1952-1954), and then led trios in the L.A. area, recording many albums for Contemporary. Arrested for heroin possession in 1958, Hawes spent five years in prison until he was pardoned by President Kennedy. He led trios for the remainder of his life, using electric piano (which disturbed his longtime fans) for a period in the early to mid-'70s, but returned to acoustic piano before dying from a stroke in 1977.

A particularly strong pianist soloist who is also the perfect accompanist for her soft-toned vocals, Rucker has long fallen into the "underrated" category due to her decision to live in Denver. This Trip LP is a reissue of an earlier EmArcy album that has not yet appeared on CD. The always-impressive trumpeter Maynard Ferguson is featured with a nonet arranged by Bill Holman in 1955 and a septet from 1954. The concise performances include both standards and originals with all but two four-minute songs clocking in around three minutes; the soloists include Ferguson, trombonists Milt Bernhart and Herbie Harper, altoists Herb Geller and Bud Shank, baritonist Bob Gordon and Bob Cooper on tenor. Bassist Red Mitchell, who had led two fairly obscure sessions for Bethlehem in 1955, came up with a gem on his lone Contemporary set as a leader (which has been reissued as this CD). Based in Los Angeles at the time, Mitchell utilized pianist Lorraine Geller and two up-and-coming players: James Clay (who splits his time between tenor and flute) and, in one of his first recording sessions, drummer Billy Higgins. The quartet performs then-recent tunes by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Clifford Brown ("Sandu"), a pair of Mitchell originals, "Scrapple From the Apple" and "Cheek to Cheek." Despite Higgins' and (to a lesser extent) Clay's connections with Ornette Coleman, the music is strictly high-quality modern mainstream bop of the era. MGM director Ronald McDougall didn't do much right in adapting Jack Kerouac's novel The Subterraneans for the big screen first, the lead character of Mardou Fox (played by Leslie Caron) was transformed from black to white, and future A-Team star George Peppard was miscast as Kerouac's alter ego, Leo Percepied. And don't even mention Robert Thom's clumsy, lightweight screenplay. But at least composer André Previn had the good sense to recruit cool jazz giants including Gerry Mulligan, Russ Freeman, and Dave Bailey to perform his Subterraneans score: jazz not only fueled Kerouac's work, but his prose sought to evoke the rhythms and energy of bebop. Indeed, this music comes far closer to accurately capturing Kerouac's writing than any of the film's dialogue. Collette utilizes the tuba of Red Callender in some of the ensembles quite colorfully and there is solo space for trombonist Frank Rosolino, guitarist Howard Roberts and bassist Red Mitchell; Bill Douglass or Bill Richmond contribute tasteful support on drums. Pianist Hampton Hawes led a trio during the 1960s and '70s that remained popular without compromising its sound or musical integrity. His phrasing and voicings could entice or amaze, and he displays great range, rhythmic vitality, and harmonic excellence during the five selections featured on this 1966 live date now reissued on CD. Hawes moves from the Afro-Latin feel of "Manha de Carnaval" to the brilliant chordal exposition on "Spring Is Here" and "The Shadow of Your Smile," before concluding with a flourish on "Searchin." Hawes is backed by wonderful bassist Red Mitchell and steady drummer Donald Bailey, who had both been with him for over a decade. During his years living in Sweden the late bassist Red Mitchell made many recordings and this live quintet date at the Montmatre is one of his best. Leading a group that included fellow American expatriates Horace Parlan on piano and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, they open the CD with "Idrees," a potent bop number penned by the leader, which features strong solos by both Sulieman and tenor saxophonist Nisse Sandstrom. The trumpeter contributed the sauntering "U.A.I. (You Are Invited)" and the title track, which is highlighted by Mitchell's booming bass solo. There are rare sessions with Lorraine Geller, James Clay, Buddy Collette, Carl Perkins and Claude Williamson included. Recorded late in 1961, this album is a milestone in Doris Day's career despite having generated no hits as her best long-player, and her purest jazz solo album. Cut as a duet with André Previn (with Previn Trio bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Frank Capp providing occasional support), the album presents Day in the most intimate musical setting of her career. Her trademark style of singing works twice as well here as it did on her swing-era and early solo recordings. He did well and the Splasc (h) to document a splendid Scandinavian concert of '74, held by the Italian-American duo Guido Manusardi - Red Mitchell. Formidouble is the result of an artistic association of rare elegance and sobriety, cemented by a close relationship of friendship between the two musicians, both moved to northern Europe around the mid-70s.Quintessence of jazz, swing is an apparently easy way that only a few manage to raise to perfection, as a basis of creative and improvitive vigor. This category includes both the Italian pianist and the American bass player, who, from the height of a balanced speech, make simple and simple what is not.Consider, for example, the daring harmonies of the two themes ("Country Dance", "Jacol tambalelor") signed by the Romanian contrabbassist Johnny Raducanu, re-evoked with an admirable hint of tones and still the swinging, extrovert version of "My Romance", all conducted on average times. Faced with a proof of capital and high artistic quality, it is difficult to highlight the best moments of the album. It will be limited to (re) emphasize the duo the encyclopedic mastery of all jazz styles, as a starting point for creatively re-harmonizing the standards. This is one of the finest albums ever recorded by the remarkable Stan Kenton Orchestra. It features two compositions by the composer/trombonist/drummer Dee Barton, "Turtle Talk" and "Waltz of the Prophets," that are among the best-known works from the Kenton library. Barton later went on to fame (like those other Kenton stalwarts, Pete Rugolo and Lennie Niehaus) as a composer for films such as Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me. The CD includes a well-known version of the song "Misty," but the arrangement is by Gene Roland, not Dee Barton. "Misty" showcases the incredible mellophonium work of Ray Starling, undoubtedly the finest soloist who ever mastered that notoriously difficult brass instrument. Another featured soloist is Sam Donahue, a deep-throated tenor player in the Vido Musso tradition, who provides a stratospherically high solo on his own arrangement of "Body and Soul." An alternative version of "Body and Soul" (along with another version of "Waltz of the Prophets") is included as a CD bonus, but it lacks the polish of the take included on the original LP. The composer/arranger Bill Holman is represented by two of his best charts: "Stairway to the Stars," a tour de force arrangement of the standard featuring the alto of Gabe Baltazar; and the big production arrangement of Lecuona's "Malaguena," an arrangement that was a staple of Kenton concerts and clinics in the 1960s and 1970s. Aficionados of Stan Kenton's band won't want to be without this CD. This is another delightful recording from Red Mitchell's long tenure in Sweden, recorded at the Fasching club in Stockholm. Pianist Roger Kellaway, an old friend and frequent musical partner, is on hand, as is tenor saxophonist Joakim Milder, whose chops have grown since the taping of Mitchell's CD Evolution (Dragon 191) a year and a half earlier. Kellaway threatens to steal the show with his percussive licks in "Doxy," while Mitchell's ever-present humor is featured in his lively blues "Life's a Take," which sadly served as his swan song as well, because he died from a stroke a little over a year after this performance. ~Ken Dryden

Tremendous work from tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins  easily one of our favorite talents of the LA scene of the 50s, heard here on material from 2 rare albums! On these 50s recordings, Bill's got a great tone that really deserves to be heard  as lean and cool as fellow LA scenester Bud Shank, but also with a soulful quality that recalls some of the alto work coming out of Boston at the same time. Half the CD features titles from the Pacific Jazz album Just Friends  and Perkins plays tenor on most of the album, plus a bit of flute and bass clarinet  in the company of Art Pepper, Richie Kamuca, Jimmy Rowles, and Hampton Hawes. Tracks include "Solid De Sylva", "Zenobia", "Diane A Flow", and "Just Friends". Joe Pass (born Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua; January 13, 1929 May 23, 1994) was an American jazz guitarist of Sicilian descent. He is considered one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century.  He created possibilities for jazz guitar through his style of chord-melody, his knowledge of chord inversions and progressions, and his use of walking basslines and counterpoint during improvisation.
