Nicole Herzog, daugther of a Congolese mother and a Swiss father. At the age of 4 Nicole started taking lessons in classical ballet, and until her 16th birthday she pursued her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Singing and playing the piano had been just two more hobbies for a long years. Her passion for solo singing sparked when she participated in a musical organized by her high school. She kept singing in regional pop, soul, R'n'B and funk bands. Because of a rising interest in Jazz, she applied for the International Jazzfestival Generations 2004, where she participated in workshops held by Adrian Mears, Ira Coleman, Lewis Nash, Dick Oatts and others. At Generations 2004 Nicole was awarded a place in the fellowship band, with which she toured in Germany (Jazzclub Unterfahrt München) and Switzerland under supervision of Roman Schwaller and Adrian Mears. Subsequently Nicole devoted herself to her studies in International Relations, which she concluded with a bachelor at the University of Geneva. The studies did not keep her from making music. In Adrian Mears she found a composer, arranger and musician who was able to write challenging and varied compositions and arrangements suiting Nicole's voice. The result of this collaboration can be be found on the CD "Time Will Tell – Nicole Herzog Septet feat. Adrian Mears", which was published under the TCB Montreux Jazz Label in September 2008. Nicole completed her Master in European Studies from the University of Basel in December 2011. In 2012 Nicole founded together with the Bernese pianist Stewy von Wattenwyl the "Nicole Herzog & Stewy von Wattenwyl Group" and published an album “INTIMACY" (Brambus Records Label). This collaboration was a big succes. Together, Nicole and Stewy, won the Radio Swiss  Jazz Award 2014. In autumn 2015 Nicole and Stewy recorded their second album together, "I LOVES YOU BILLIE", which was published mid-march 2016. In mai 2016 Nicole got the opportunity to make a recording with the legendary US-tenorsaxophonist Don Menza. The album "THAT'S LIFE" (Label Musiques Suisses) is going to be released in autumn 2016. Nicole lives with her little family in Copenhagen and regularly performs in Switzerland, South Germany, Austria, France and China. https://www.nicoleherzog.com/en/portrait/

The convergence of jazz, funk, and soul combined with musical inspiration from artists such as, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock; and features the talents of acclaimed artist Keb'Mo', and smooth jazz artists Kirk Whalum and Mindi Abair. He is the internationality in person. Born in Nigeria Greg Manning grew up in Switzerland. In 2002 he moved to Los Angeles but still keep contact to the land of his youth. So he is a three-time certified platinum producer for Universal Music Switzerland, and has had several Swiss Chart toppers since 1996. Greg worked as musical director with Jonathan Butler and also performed with Brian McKnight, Kirk Whalum, Will Downing, Richard Elliot, Gerald Albright, Chante Moore, Mindi Abair and Keb' Mo' just to mention a few. His debut album Soulciety was released in 1999 and is unfortunately unavailable anymore. By chance I became aware of his new album The Calling, which was released in April 2010. Greg's new album features Mindi Abair, André Berry, Patrick Bettison, Tom Evans, Keb' Mo', Jimmy Reid, Kirk Whalum and Terry Wollman among others. Greg wrote, arranged, mixed and produced all songs except Nick Of Time. The Calling starts with the fulminate Groovin' featuring attractive Mindi Abair in her prominent role as raising sax star. Mindi recently entered the charts with her new album In Hi-Fi Stereo (2010). Also on the party Columbia University graduated jazz vocalist Dawn Norfleet, who we'll certainly see again. Bonnie Raitt wrote Nick Of Time in 1989 for her same-titled album, her personal break-through. With great taste for fine music art Greg chooses this song for featured saxophonist Jimmy Reid. Greg's arrangement has thanks to Jimmy's emotional interpretation and the choir background a real Gospel flavor. The Calling presents Patrick Bettison on chromatic harmonica. If it is the harmonica, the bass or African percussion Patrick always impresses with his personal musical intensity. Yeke Yeke Yo is Greg's orchestral approach with influences of African percussion. Colorful and picturesque.

On After The Rain guitarist Keb’ Mo', a living blues legend, showcases his bluesy finger style. Greg always tailors a perfect song for each presented musician. On It's Me Greg Manning displays his pleasant-sounding personality. Jimmy Reid, Tom Evans and Greg blend into a fine arrangement. The dynamic Shine A Light reveals another aspect of the musician Greg Manning. He is a supreme vocalist beside his excellent skills as keyboardist and programmer. With the cordial Mountain View Greg walks on the path of Dan Siegel, Jim Brickman and Richard Clayderman. Wayman is Greg's tribute to the late Wayman Tisdale featuring André Berry on lead bass. André plays Wayman's signature slap bass reminding at this great musician. “The guy was always so happy, so positive, always had a smile, always made you feel great,” recently commented Peter White. On Tribal Sphere Greg shows a jazzy excursion into world music and jazz fusion in the style of Joe Zawinul. Excellent sax and keyboard work! With the interlude Coming & Going Greg mirrors his thoughts on solo piano. The romantic ballade The Prayer unites Terry Wollman on acoustic guitar with Greg's piano performance. An awesome melody seamlessly played. The lazy moment of a sunny Sunday, Greg catch this mood in Sunday Morning. Final tune of this brilliant album is Home featuring sax legend Kirk Whalum, who will release a tribute album to Donny Hathaway next month. Greg Manning's The Calling shines brightly. Give this album a listen, it's without no doubt worth to spend some of your precious time. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/gregmanning1

Martin Abbuehl (violin); Florent Kirchmeyer (guitar); Marco Neri (guitar); Thomas Dürst (double bass).

A train journey into the time of the legendary Hot Club de France and the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. When the four thoroughbred musicians start their Swing Express, nostalgia is the order of the day as the "train crew" is fully committed to Django Reinhardt's music. With violin, two guitars and double bass they bring the time of the 1930s back to life.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of the four dedicated string artists, the spark of enthusiasm jumps over in no time on the listener. Velvety soft melodies, sometimes dripping with melancholy, alternate with breathtaking, iridescent sound cascades and dizzying, breakneck solo caprioles. A ride on the Swing Express lets time pass by in no time and many a passenger would have liked to sit in the end ... (Translated from German.)

The European jazz trio Cojazz is joined by guest tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso for this live engagement at Chorus Jazz Club in Lausanne, Switzerland. Pianist Andy Scherrer knew what he was getting from his Italian addition for this set, a seasoned veteran who not only has played with Maynard Ferguson, the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, Thad Jones and many more, but also has led his own groups. Basso's style is sprinkled with the influence of numerous earlier greats on his instrument, though his big tone also incorporates a sly humor as he intermingles imaginative quotes into his improvisations. A robust soloist in up-tempo settings, Basso's lyricism in his interpretation of Duke Ellington's lush, unjustly overlooked ballad "Don't You Know I Care" is simply magical. While Scherrer's playing, along with that of bassist Isla Eckinger and drummer Peter Schmidlin, merits strong praise, they allow their guest the lion's share of the spotlight, rewarding the audience with an evening of memorable interpretations of standards and forgotten chestnuts. ~Ken Dryden

The three passionate musicians came closer to him in the band He & We and soon a friendship arose. Embossed by radio / jazz blues and latin, the three quickly recognized that they were speaking the same musical language. The joy, the fun and the love of the music brought the trio to the founding of the organ. The Hammond organ is the trademark of the band. Recorded in May 2009 at Fattoria Musica Osnabrück, at Milchmusic Studios Cologne and at Rheinklang Tonstudios Cologne.

The borders between jazz singing and singer/songwriting have often been blurred in the past. However, this borderline has rarely been crossed so energetically and targeted from one side to the other as on this CD. You hear – often in the same song – the influence of Carole King just as much as that of Ella Fitzgerald. And then other style elements are incorporated in passing ranging from Irish folklore all the way to quotes from jazz history. Wonderfully enticing melodies, lyrics full of romanticism and even a saucy wink of the eye: all that embedded in very varied arrangements full of feeling.

This is a completely successful debut, with which Hannah Köpf is going to attract a lot of attention. She deserves it. Following piano lessons at an early age, as a teenager she discovered the songs of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez and then later artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Maria Schneider and Wayne Shorter. However, she was already studying singing at the conservatory of Amsterdam. Her life has been centered around creating her own world of music since she graduated in 2006. She wants to share this world with other people, which the reason why she can already point to a long list of performances and awards as hardly any other musician of her age can. Her clear, expressive, finely nuanced voice, which still sounds natural, has always cleared the path for her into the heart of her audience.

The band, which has been together since 2007, provides the perfect musical frame for the singer. First, there is the newly crowned "Echo Jazz" prizewinner and exceptional trumpeter Frederik Köster, who also debuted at Jazz thing Next Generation! The same holds for the man on the keyboards, Benjamin Schäfer, who has signed with Enja in the meantime and is one of the most respected pianists. Silvio Morger is a drummer much in demand, who studied under Gene Jackson in New York, among others. Jakob Kühnemann, former bassist of the German Jazz Orchestra, has been playing a long time as well as in other groups with Silvio Morger; the harmony between drums and bass is a factor not to be underestimated in every band! Holger Werner on saxophone and clarinet round out the top-rate band, which is expanded bit by bit with guest musicians for background vocals, percussion, flute or trombone – and even by a string quartet on a few pieces.

A new big voice together with the finest pianist in Swiss jazz, Nicole Herzog - Stewy von Wattenwyl Group. Stewy von Wattenwyl has been accompanying Brambus for almost two decades and presented a long series of excellent CDs for the label and again and again new recordings. This is of particular intensity and sensitivity! In 2007, Nicole Herzog and Stewy von Wattenwyl were more by chance on stage for the first time  Zurich Jazzclubs, and the concert was so much fun that the same evening the talk was about a joint CD project. Five years and many joint concerts later coincided with coincidence, so that a canceled studio session offered the possibility to record spontaneously. And the result is enthusiastic: refreshing vocal jazz in various ad hoc formations from duo to quintet, earthy ballads, bossa, blues and boiling swing - magic moments captured in breathtaking sound quality. https://www.amazon.de/Intimacy-Nicole-Herzog/dp/B00BCR34NU

Music-in all its variety- has been a constant companion of the Afro-Swiss Nicole Herzog since her earliest childhood. She began classical ballet lessons at the age of four, and until she was sixteen dreamed of becoming a dancer. Both singing and learning the piano remained just additional hobbies at first. Later, when she took part in a school musical, however, her passion for singing was set loose. From then on, she performed with regional bands in the realm of pop, soul, R & B, and funk. Don Menza is a powerful tenor saxophonist with a dynamic, distinctive sound and soloing style. His compositions such as “Groovin’ Hard” and “Time Check” have become standards in jazz study programmes at colleges and universities worldwide. In 2005 he was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.

Martin Lechner is literally a natural talent. Without having ever completed a single singing session, he interprets jazz classics with his characteristic voice and thus gives the songs a convincing independence. His sympathetic appearance, the warm timbre of his voice, the excellent rhythmic feeling as well as his sovereign phrasing, make Martin Lechner an exceptional release. And only a few years ago did he begin singing for his own pleasure. Following "open mic" appearances in 2006, Martin Lechner founds his own band with Swiss musicians. In the meantime, a project has been set up, which has achieved a great deal in a very short time. After his successful debut album "Gentlemen Are Hard To Find", his second litter is "Somethin 'Old & Somethin' New - Somethin 'Else!". ~Google translation

Stuff Smith With The Henri Chaix Trio - Late Woman Blues

Stuff Smith spent the final two years of his life performing in Europe; this previously unreleased Swiss concert from 1965 was finally released some 36 years later. The violinist is accompanied by stride pianist Henri Chaix, young bassist Michel Guillemin, and fellow American expatriate Wallace Bishop (who had resided in Europe since 1950) on drums. Smith is in top form, though the inexperience of the bassist is rather obvious during the awkward introduction to "Perdido"; fortunately, things improve rapidly afterwards. In addition to his swinging fiddle, Smith's hoarse vocals are a riot in his "Late Woman Blues" (also known as "Blues in B Flat"), while he breaks up one of his sidemen with his singing of "On the Sunny Side of the Street." The instrumentals are mostly familiar to Smith's fans, including "Take the 'A' Train" and "How High the Moon," though it is the adventurous and occasionally dissonant take of "Body and Soul," a standard rarely played by the violinist, that takes top honors. The sound is very good for such a vintage recording. Swing fans will consider this long-hidden treasure to be an essential CD. ~Ken Dryden

Since then he has been building a niche position within the annals of contemporary jazz not only through his collaborations with Mindi Abair and Jonathan Butler but also with his own ever-expanding discography. His 2010 project, ‘The Calling’, quickly got the ball rolling and he followed up four years later with the excellent ‘Dance With You’.  Now, with a release date of July 22, comes ‘Sugar & Spice’ from which the title cut is already blazing a trail to radio. http://smoothjazztherapy.typepad.com/my_weblog/2016/06/greg-manning-sugar-spice.html

One of the finest jazz musicians born in Switzerland, altoist George Robert has long considered his main influences to be Charlie Parker and Phil Woods. He started on piano when he was eight, and clarinet at ten, playing with a family band that included his four brothers. Robert switched permanently to alto as a teenager. In 1980, he moved to the United States to study at Berklee, settling in New York in 1985. Robert recorded his first album that year (for his GPR label), and in 1987, formed a quintet that he co-led with trumpeter Tom Harrell on and off through 1992. George Robert, who has toured with Clark Terry, has recorded many albums as a leader for Contemporary, TCB, Mons, and Jazz Focus. ~by Scott Yanow
