These days she’s fostering a passion for the electric bass and producing electronic music, but vocalist Annie Sellick is most known for twenty-five years of fronting jazz trios. She is known by everyone for her unique and undeniable stage presence, and an ability to use repertoire to share personal authenticity, and connect with the band members as well as everyone in the room. “She doesn’t just sing, she swings, tells stories, shares her heart and celebrates simultaneously” (CDBaby fan post).

An accomplished bandleader, she made her living for most of those years by honing relationships with jazz musicians in the areas she toured and traveling to them, sending arrangements in advance, rehearsing them at soundcheck and fleshing out the rest of the show by calling jazz standards and cuing style treatments that would feature the strengths of the musicians on her stage.

Her seasoned sense of rhythm, swing and phrasing makes obvious that she can (and has) hang with some of the top names in jazz. She’s also had a life in gypsy swing and big band jazz orchestras, and performed with several known groups in those genres ,as well as lead her own. She’s released eight albums under her own label. http://www.anniesellick.com/about

For her Christmas album, pianist Beegie Adair engages an orchestra to back her usual trio. That action pushes the genre designation for her music from "jazz" to "easy listening." Although generally defined as a jazz artist, Adair is on the more conservative side, usually playing the melodies of the standards she likes to fill her albums with, while adding only brief improvisational sections and embellishments. Here, the string arrangements don't leave much room even for that, making this instrumental pop with a holiday bent and almost no jazz content. Of course, it's a pleasant recording of some very familiar material, festive and occasionally playful ("Santa Baby") as well as sentimental. Most artists use their Christmas albums simply to present seasonal music in their established styles; Adair goes beyond that somewhat by adding the orchestra, but this album still sounds like what her followers would expect. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/winter-romance-mw0001778192

Utilizing a 13-piece band that includes ten horns, Maynard Ferguson performs bebop with his Big Bop Nouveau on this CD. All of the music is fairly basic, using common chord changes and charts that leave plenty of room for solos. Ferguson shows at age 65 that he still has most of his outstanding range and, assisted by a trumpet section full of screamers, the performances are boisterous and sometimes a bit bombastic. Chip McNeill takes a passionate soprano solo on "A Night in Tunisia," Matt Wallace has a couple of rewarding spots on tenor and trumpeter Walter White fares well on "Fox Hunt," but it is the leader who gives this music its main personality.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/live-from-london-mw0000110888

Ms. Beegie Adair is one of those musicians many people have heard without realizing it. As a regular Nashville session hand, she has played with no less than Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Adair also has had a parallel career as a jazz pianist in the genially lyrical mold of Errol Garner and George Shearing. Dancing In The Dark is a tribute to the music sung by and associated with Fred Astaire. (While not a jazz singer per se, Astaire himself recorded with jazz musicians such as Oscar Peterson on occasion.) Accompanied only by bass and drums, Adair imbues these classic, old-school romantic songs with good-natured swing, keeping that aspect of Astaire's flair intact. ~ Mark Keresma https://www.allmusic.com/album/dancing-in-the-dark-a-tribute-to-fred-astaire-mw0000794474

Singer/pianist Diane Marino was born in Manhattan, NYC. She received her early piano training of classical studies and improvisation from the age of 10. Diane was accepted on NYC'S 'Famed' High School for the Performing Arts as a classical piano major. She later attended the Mannes College of Music in Manhattan where she studied piano with world-renowned concert pianist Murray Perahia. While working towards her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance, Diane began singing with small groups in the NYC tri-state area, After graduating from Mannes, she was singing professionally 6 nights a week. It was only natural and a matter of time before she would combine her singing and piano playing skills. Diane performed solo gigs for several years in the NYC area before teaming up with bassist Frank Marino.

The duo formed the nine member Brazilian group, 'Som Brasileiro' (Sounds of Brazil) in 1993 and have performed at numerous jazz festivals, venues and concerts in the Southeast sharing the bill with artists such as Tania Maria, Pete Escovedo, Joe Henderson and Dr. John, to name a few. Diane's debut jazz quartet CD 'A Sleepin' Bee' was released in 2003 and has received national acclaim, extensive radio airplay and rave reviews. In August of 2003 Diane's CD reached # 25 in the National JazzWeek Charts and held for four weeks. WRTI radio in Philadelphia had Diane's version of "Don't Misunderstand" at #15 in their top 100 songs for 2003. This CD offers a wide array of vocal and instrumental traditional jazz standards, Latin jazz, and Brazilian jazz (sung in Portuguese). Diane's second CD release, 'On the Street Where You Live' proves once again that Diane is a natural whether playing, singing, or both. This CD will take the listener to the very depths of emotions. There is a re-current theme throughout that tells stories of love, and love lost, as well as playful gems of Latin and Brazilian jazz. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6730081&style=music&fulldesc=T

Diane Marino is an artist worthy of your attention, for her ability to combine the talents of a swinging pianist, a vocalist that communicates with feeling and warmth, and an arranger who can package the music in a fresh and intriguing manner that can grab your interest. In today s diffuse musical world, with remotely varied styles that lack a concise emphasis on melody and the classic forms, it s important to have a lively presentation of the great standards to keep these great songs invigorating and in the moment. This album from Diane Marino serves those purposes well. It should be an important addition to your collection. Loads Of Love is Diane Marino s fifth album, all on the M & M label. A native New Yorker, Diane attended the High School for the Performing Arts and Mannes College of Music for classical piano. Her first album, A Sleeping Bee included a jazz quartet, playing standards, the next, On The Street Where You Live , had jazz, but also with a Brazilian and Latin flair, while Just Groovin reinterpreted pop songs of the 60's with a larger ensemble and guest artists. Select songs from these three CD s were re-mastered for the 2011 offering From The Heart .

They all received widespread air play and international exposure. Diane also has performed around the country, in festivals, jazz clubs, and cabaret settings like New York City s Metropolitan Room. This wealth of experience and broad outlook can now be synthesized in this current album, with a focus back to her jazz roots. Helping that focus and contributing mightily to the proceedings is Houston Person, who appears as a guest artist on the tenor sax, and more important, has lent a creative direction as producer of the album. For those who don t know him, Person is a towering figure from the classic generation of the tough tenor , with a robust yet sweet bluesy sound. But equally important here, as a producer he has a sweepingly broad knowledge of the American popular songbook, and an approach that focuses on the melody. This approach combines neatly with Diane Marino s sensibilities and they ve known each other for several years and collaborated before. On this album, they join together to explore the ballads and blues. These aspects of jazz inform the best sides of Diane s interpretations of these standards, with her own arrangements that put a little individual spin on the chestnuts. In addition to Diane Marino s piano and Houston Person s tenor sax, the band includes musicians with whom Diane has performed frequently in her current Nashville base, and beyond, and the comfortable familiarity adds a soothing and tight level to the presentation.

The bassist is Diane s husband and musical partner, too, Frank Marino, Chris Brown lays down a solid groove on the drums, and Pat Bergeson appears on guitar on several tracks. And another special guest is trumpeter George Tidwell, who adds an element of beauty in his appearance on Someone You ve Loved . The program of songs on the album include some well-known Richard Rodgers and Cole Porter you should know, some less prevalent nuggets of the songbook, and even some Ellington, all conveyed with an intimacy of warmth and interpretation. The title track Loads Of Love comes from the legendary later Rodgers show No Strings , originally performed by Diahann Carroll and popularized to jazz audiences by Shirley Horn. Indeed, there are several Shirley Horn connections here, obvious in Horn s coy stylistic influence on Marino, and also in the material, like Johnny Pate s Someone You ve Loved which Shirley Horn also recorded as Have You Tried To Forget , or Jimmy McHugh s I Just Found Out About Love. ~ Editorial Reviews   http://www.amazon.com/Loads-Love-Diane-Marino/dp/B00BLRQKKK.
