Bio ~ http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Motis

Sant Andreu Jazz Band is a project arising from a music class. Conducted by Joan Chamorro, the big band brings together children between 6 and 18 years old, around a classic jazz repertoire with lots of swing, which gained the public and sold-out some of the most important music auditoriums in Spain.

The band was founded in 2006 at Escola Municipal de Música de Sant Andreu. The band has performed at numerous concerts and festivals in Catalonia and neighbouring countries. They released their first live CD/DVD Jazzing: Live at Casa Fuster in 2009, featuring alongside established jazz musicians, the precocious 14-year-old, Andrea Motis among other young talents.

2010 was a breakthrough year for the band, with appearances on more than 20 festivals including Valls, Terrassa, Girona, Barcelona, Platja d'Aro, and legendary venues like el Jamboree, Palau de la Música Catalana, JazzSi, Hotel Casa Fuster, featuring international performers like Dick Oatts, Ken Peplowski, Bobby Gordon, Perico Sambeat, Ignasi Terraza, Matthew Simon, and Esteve Pi. The band also released their second recording Jazzing, Vol. 2

In 2012 the film director Ramón Tort made the documentary A film about kids and music based on the band's work and efforts. The film was awarded best feature film at the Lights, Camera, Help Festival in Austin, Texas, in 2013. https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/13058-sant-andreu-jazz-band-albums

Joan Chamorro's impact on the development of young jazz musicians within the region of Barcelona is truly remarkable. Small groups. Big bands. Instrumentalists and singers. He is a prime example of what highs a dedicated individual can achieve.

I met Koldo when he was 6 years old, as a sax student. At the age of 8, in 2014, he was already part of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. I have seen his personal and musical evolution over all these years. He has been and still is a very pleasant person to work with. Good companion, punctual, respectful, sensitive, committed…

As a musician, he is a very good professional, with a voice of his own that he will develop little by little over the next few years. Very good reader, very good technique, inventive improviser, and with the ability to continually surprise in his speech.

As a vocalist, he relatively recently began to have songs as the soloist, within the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. His voice combines the influence of the jazz vocalists that he has been listening to all these years and his passion for musicals, creating his own personal style, one that we can also hear in his original compositions.

In 2009, I started with this Joan Chamorro presents collection, and I did it with Andrea Motis. I never thought this collection would reach number 20, but here we are with this new CD that makes me proud and fills me with happiness. At the time of this recording, Koldo was 17 years old and already had more than 32 CDs recorded in the context of the SAJB.

He has played and record alongside world-class musicians, such as those who collaborate on his album: Scott Hamilton, Joel Frahm, Enrique Oliver and, during all these years, with Luigi Grasso, John Allred, Jon-erik Kellso, Scott Robinson, Dick Oatts, Joe Magnarelli, and a long etc.He has been the first alto on the sax section for some years, after playing second alongside Joan Martí. It was a good school.

As a first alto, he has an expressive and powerful sound that makes him a wonderful lead sax. After Alba Esteban left the baritone sax position, Koldo assumed that role, sharing an album, Jazzing 13, with her, doubling the baritone, as Sahib Sihab and Cecil Payne did in their day, in Dizzy Gillespie’s big band.

The fact that Koldo has become the baritonist of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band this last couple of years, and that he has recorded several songs on his album with this sax that is so special to me, also makes me very happy.Congratulations, Koldo, for your career, for this wonderful album and for living music so passionately. I wish you all the best!!! By Joan Chamorro

The idea behind the Sant Andreu Reunion Band is to create a group in which all the musicians form or have formed part of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. I always try to give opportunities, beyond the project, to all those who are working well: 1) Either through the collection of cds Joan Chamorro presents, or 2) counting on them, already as professionals, in the different groups I create. I continue to work with musicians who have not been in the orchestra for years and at the same time new musicians are joining, as they grow personally and musically.

More than 80 young musicians have already passed through the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the vast majority of whom are or will become professional musicians. The result is that in each project new soloists appear, new voices that little by little have their own voice. Possibly next year we will see new faces in other groups. For the time being, here we have this new meeting of musicians where, once again, the voice is the protagonist through six singers with very varied styles, and all of them great instrumentalists. Completing the group we have the rest of the band who are great soloists and who, occasionally, also do vocals in some themes.

The arrangements, for the most part, are by Joan Monné. To be able to count on Scott Hamilton in some songs is an honour for us. I hope and wish to continue supporting young musicians through projects like this one. We continue Sant Andreu Jazz Band 18 years of jazz.

Since 2013 there have been many collaborations with the great tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton. In Jazz House we have had him on many occasions. This new CD brings together themes from four sessions, themes that have not formed part of any of the albums already published:

1- A tenor battle with Joan Martí and Marçal Perramon, former musicians of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, which recreates the atmosphere of this type of session, just as Dexter Gordon, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Griffin, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Al Cohn, Zoot Simms, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Paul Quinichette, Lester Young and Scott Hamilton himself, along with other great tenor saxophonists, played in their day

2- Some unreleased tracks from the session "Èlia Bastida meets Scott Hamilton".

3- Tracks recorded during the recording sessions of the album "Joan Chamorro presenta Alba Esteban".

4- A couple of Brazilian songs from a session we did with Alba Armengou and Vicente López.

In total, 14 songs in which Scott shows why, today, he is still one of the great tenors of the world jazz scene.https://joanchamorro.com/album/jazz-house-sessions-with-scott-hamilton

And we have reached 15 years of existence. Some of the musicians who are part of this new Jazzing were not even born when the project, with more than 60 musicians between the ages of 6 and 21 years old, was started. None of the musicians who were part of the first recording, Jazzing 1 of 2009, is part of the current Sant Andreu Jazz Band (although in this new work, representation of the year 2020, we can find two musicians who were present that year: the Motis sisters, who in this case appear as special guests).

All these years are reflected on the one hand in 21 cd's (11 jazzings, some of them with several volumes) as well as in the 18 Joan Chamorro presents and in Ramon Tort's film A film about kids and music, from 2011.

In the text of Jazzing 1 I spoke of a dream come true. What can I say now, a few years later? That this dream is still alive. That there is still, on my part, if not more, the same illusion as in the beginning. That young people are leaving, but the orchestra remains and continues to be a motivation and a source of learning and inspiration for those who are entering and also for many other musicians who, seeing our work, are motivated and work in the same line as we do.

I can only say thank you, once again, for having the opportunity to live this dream, and to share it with so many people around the world. Thousands of fans know the names of each and every one of the members who are or have been in the orchestra and, once they leave, follow their individual careers. Those followers know our extensive repertoire, they have all our records, they know the different versions of the songs, they know the details, the ins and outs. They are followers of our history, a history that after 15 years has become the history of thousands of people.

The Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a dream come true and based on the fact that what is really important is the present, the path, and not the goal.

I don't know to what extent the number 10 is significant, but it is a round number and reaching this number of Jazzings (CDs of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band) for me is, at least, a great joy.

Jazzing 10, but 18 CDs, actually, since several of them are double or triple, as is the case of this last one, which consists of three volumes.

The first of them (VOL. 1), dedicated to the music of Clifford Brown, with special arrangements for the occasion, of songs that were either originals by Clifford himself or songs that he used to perform.

The other two volumes (VOL. 2 and 3) are also a sample of the different recordings we have made during this 2019, both with the entire Sant Andreu Jazz Band, or in smaller formats, and in two different spaces such as the JAZZ HOUSE (home of the young orchestra) and the JAMBOREE, a regular venue during all these years, where we have also played and recorded on many occasions.

We are celebrating the 13th anniversary of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, through which around 60 musicians (currently 24) have passed, with this new jazzing, the ninth, in three volumes. Jazzing 9 (vol.3) (Temps Record, 2020).

At the same time we continue with the Joan Chamorro presents series, of which we have just published the 11th by Alba Armengou and the 12th by Carla Motis, and of which we are currently recording for the following ones, by Jan Domenech and Joana Casanova, and we already have others in mind.

I never imagined that we would be here, but here we are, with more enthusiasm than ever, with more happiness than ever, seeing how our way of working, our methodology and our philosophy is admired and required from all parts of the world.

Something as simple as falling in love with music through listening to it, feeling like musicians from the first moment, giving us the opportunity to enjoy from the first day, singing melodies that are inside us and incorporating new ones based on listening to the greats like Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ben Webster, Charlie Parker, and a long etcetera.

Jazz is universal and has no frontiers, no ages, nor is it one for a few. Jazz belongs to everyone, it's popular, and if young people are given the opportunity to get to know it and are told "You can also play and enjoy", the rest will come. To improvise is to create, it is to feel that you can develop your own voice, and nowadays that has an incalculable value, in a society that tends to the unification of ideas and thoughts.

The members of the SAJB are unique individuals, as we all are, and that is important when facing education.Thank you, Nicolás, once again, for teaching me so much in such a short time.

Sant Andreu Jazz Band is a project arising from a music class. Conducted by Joan Chamorro, the big band brings together children between 6 and 18 years old, around a classic jazz repertoire with lots of swing, which gained the public and sold-out some of the most important music auditoriums in Spain.

Twelve years of relentless efforts and love, of magical achievements represented by eight recordings on CD and DVD. Nine albums within the Joan Chamorro presents collection, starred by some of the young talents that emerged from the Sant Andreu Jazz Band to become up-and-coming stars on their own right: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernandez, Magali Datzira, Rita Payes, Marc Martin, Joan Mar Sauque, Elia Bastida and the projected labeled as La Magia de la Veu ("The magic in the voice").

In 2021, the Barcelona Jazz Festival dedicated the artist portrait to me and I had 5 concerts. For one of them I had the idea of bringing together all the musicians with whom I had recorded a CD from the “presentas” collection. There were 15 musicians and I could almost form a big band: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira, Rita Payés, Marc Martín, Joan Mar Sauqué, Èlia Bastida, Joan Codina, Alba Armengou, Carla Motis, Joana Casanova, Jan Domènech, Marçal Perramon, Joan Martí and Alba Esteban.

I completed the sections with two trumpet players, Elsa Armengou and Gerard Peñaranda, a saxophonist, Koldo Munné (with whom I am currently recording his presentation CD), three trombonists (Claudia Rostey, Max Tato and Perot Rigau, and for the rhythm section I had the one who had been the first drummer of the SAJB: Arnau Julià.

Each of the musicians presented chose a theme. In most cases I asked for special arrangements for the occasion and Joan Monné was in charge of writing them. All the recordings I have made are important and make me feel proud and happy, but the one we made for JAZZING 12 VOL. 2, with practically all the musicians who had been members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and this one you are holding in your hands are really very special to me.

They are the summary of something important, of something wonderful; they are the summary of a precious dream that has no end. The music on this new CD is marvellous and we can hear the maturity they have all reached over the years. None of the protagonists of this work are now in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, but I feel that each and every one of them will always be part of our history. A story of unwanted success, the result of constant work and of believing that jazz can be and is a music that young people can fall in love with. This big band was my dream and now, once again, it has become a reality. https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/joan-chamorro-presentas-big-band/

"A friend recommended Andrea to me, and she's definitely a "comer," someone worth a lot of encouragement. I'm frankly tired of guitar-strumming singer-songwriters who do all "original material" because the harmonies of standards (like "Body and Soul" or "All the Things You Are") are totally beyond their reach. Andrea is taking a far more sophisticated path, reminiscent of Chet Baker -in both her singing and trumpet work- than any other musician.

She was in her early teens when this album was made. Her voice lacks mature body and firm, sustaining breath support both her singing and trumpet- but is nonetheless most pleasant, with clear elocution and precise intonation. And her trumpet work sparkles with note choices that are melodic and "hip." You can only hope she has the right teachers and influences to nurture her undeniable talent. Also, one might hope that she doesn't overdo the guitars. I'm not hearing the support of a firm walking bass or of a drummer with a strong hi-hat clap and ringing ride cymbal. Pianos are on the verge of extinction the reason I go back to Bill Evans and Duke Ellington for the majority of my listening. The presence of Scott Hamilton makes this album a no-brainer.

As a great reference for violin and jazz, the name of Stéphane Grappelli has accompanied Èlia Bastida since her beginnings in the world of jazz. She defines him as a lyrical, passionate, virtuosic, technical, detailed and romantic musician.

Until now, she has made punctual tributes to him with recordings of some songs like “Stardust-Shine”, “It Had to be You”, “How About You”, among others. In this album “Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli” she wanted to give her particular point of view, looking for how, from his musical personality, to approach Grappelli’s music and take it to her field.

On this album you can listen to a journey through the various facets of Stéphane Grappelli: from the important tandem he formed with Django Reinhardt with the songs “Clair de Lune”, “Anniversary Song” and “Troublant Bolero”, continuing with some of the standards that he recorded as “Makin’ Whoopee”, “I Can’t Get Started”, “Flamingo”, “Nature Boy”, “My One and Only Love” and “Django”, and recalling with the song “Izaura” his incursions in the new bag with the album “La Grande Réunion” that he recorded with Baden Powell in 1986.

We also can find on the disc a version of Bach’s Double Concerto recalling Grappelli’s recording with Eddie South and Django Reinhardt and two songs that Èlia Bastida has composed for the occasion, thinking of bringing the essence of the violinist to other styles such as Brazilian music and funk with “Dance for Stéphane” and “Grappelia”. https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/tribute-to-stephane-grappelli/

There are people who have a light of their own, who give off a special energy. People that each time you meet them, even after a long time, always invade you with a special feeling of joy.

People with whom the embrace is absolutely sincere. You know you can trust them. That they exude love. That their music reflects exactly what they are, how they breathe, how they feel, how they think. Toni Belenguer was one of those people, difficult to find and that, once you meet them, you want them to be close to you, because they are loved, because they bring positive energy, with their genius and their existential doubts, but above all for their generosity and love.

I met Toni Belenguer around 2005, when we started playing together in groups with double bass player David Mengual and drummer David Xirgu. We played a tribute to Gerry Mulligan. We played some gigs at the Jamboree and other venues. I remember that playing with Toni was a constant source of inspiration, both melodically and rhythmically. He never ceased to surprise you with his phrasing, with his ideas of overwhelming coherence. In 2008 I recorded an album called “Baritone Rhapsody”, where he played practically all the songs. That was my first recording with Toni.

After that came other collaborations, both in my personal projects and those related to the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. He participated in the JAZZINGS (that's how the SAJB CDs are called) 5 (2014), 6 vol2 (2015), 7 (2016) and 8 vol2 (2017). He also participated in other CDs of the collection "Joan Chamorro presenta": Rita Payés (2014), Marc Martín (2015), Joan Mar Sauqué (2016), Èlia Bastida (2017), Joan Codina (2017) and also in the album "Joan Chamorro Nonet & More Play Alfons Carrascosa's Arrangements"(2017). When in 2020 I received the sad news that Toni had left us, I thought of paying him a tribute, dedicating a concert to him in the framework of the Jazz Festival that I direct: the Jazzing Festival.

From the collaborations that Toni made with us in previous years came a great part of the repertoire that we would perform and that you can listen to in this CD. Themes that he had played with us and in which he left a sample of his art and originality. That was the reason why I invited Rita Payés (I can't get Started ), Èlia Bastida (My Ideal ), Andrea Motis (Samba em Preludio), Marc Martín (Softly as in a Morning Sunrise and Close your Eyes) and Joan Mar Sauqué (Motel and Polka Dots and Moonbeans).

I contacted Francisco "Blanco" Latino to see if we could do an original song and an arrangement by Toni and, from the proposals he made, we finally performed Densificación por Fuga (original) and Darn that Dream (arrangement). The other 3 themes of the CD are arrangements by Joan Monné in which the trombones have a special participation: Angel Eyes, Love Your Spell Is Everywhere and the original by J.J.Johnson, Riviera. For the concert I invited three important people in Toni's career: Perico Sambeat, Francisco "Blanco" Latino and Carlos Martín, three wonderful musicians who immediately accepted the invitation.

During the concert we read a text dedicated to Toni and we presented Sedajazz with a painting by Enric Bastida (Sedajazz is the project of Latino where Toni grew up, where he took his first steps in jazz music and where he has a classroom named after him). On one wall of that classroom is Toni's painting. The painting is the cover of this album! Thank you, Toni, for everything you offered us.

We will come back again and again to your music to remember and enjoy you. I hope you like, wherever you are, this tribute, and that you enjoy it as we did when we recorded it. Always in our hearts!!!!By Joan Chamorro
