Los Dukes is a new 9 piece band arranged and directed by Gabriela Anders, featuring songs from the Duke Ellington’s catalog done in wildly distinctive Latin American styles. A Latina’s tribute to the music of Duke Ellington. Gabriela Anders is one of the most accomplished and appealing contemporary vocalists creating today. Her debut album on Warner Jazz, “Wanting,” enjoyed much success and critical praise. Her new band, Los Dukes, pays loving tribute to the elegant GENIUS of Duke Ellington and includes some of the best Latin Jazz players on the New York scene. Los Dukes is an explosive, artistic, riotously fun post-macho latin-jazz experience featuring New York City’s baddest gauchos. Some months before the Covid-19 outbreak, Gabriela Anders began tracking a new CD of piano/voice duets in studios scattered around NYC. With no idea what was coming, she happened to finish recording the album's three other musicians just as it hit. Amidst the fear and uncertainty at the virus' epicenter, Gabriela continued recording, creating intimate portraits of struggle and redemption against the bizarre backdrop of the pandemic. The project’s pianists, Jim Ridl, Jean-Michel Pilc and Jon Cowherd - radically different stylists from different corners of the jazz world - offer their unique sensibilities to Gabriela’s voice and music. The results, unified by some of the strongest, most imaginative singing and orchestration of Gabriela’s career, elevate the record far beyond the predictability of the commonplace duo aesthetic. “The Ring” is fun and beautiful, surprising and moving, a one-of-a-kind breakout statement from a unique artist's take on what it means to be a jazz singer. https://gabrielaanders.bandcamp.com/album/the-ring

Gabriela Anders got her big break singing a duet with soft jazz giant Michael Franks, and like that new age patriarch, Anders wraps laid-back vocals around even more tranquil rhythms. It's all very calming and proficient and breezy. And also bland as hell. Like her mentor, Anders has a hard time injecting any soul into her work. Wanting, her debut album, mixes bits of her Argentine heritage with late-'70s California jazz; so, Brazilian music coasts along with soft and hazy saxophone fills and tapping percussion leads. It all can be very pretty the opening "Fire of Love" represents Anders at her most relaxed and relaxing but boring if you're expecting tempo shifts or even minor vocal inflections. Anders merely settles for a place next to the band to drift along.

Yet, no one seems to be going anywhere or really caring about their passivity. ~ Michael Gallucci https://www.allmusic.com/album/wanting-mw0000041583

The daughter of a jazz saxophone player, Anders studied classical guitar while a child but moved to piano study at a Buenos Aires conservatory. She spent much time in New York as well, soaking up the music of tenor specialists John Coltrane, Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon. She also studied with Don Sebesky and began singing with Grover Washington, Jr. and Tito Puente while going to college. A brief time in Japan resulted in her first album, 1996's Fantasia (recorded as Beleza), though she had returned to New York by 1997. After sending a demo tape into Warner Jazz, Anders signed a contract and released Wanting in August 1998.

Born into a family of musicians, the Argentinean native studied classical guitar and piano in Buenos Aires while listening closely to her father, jazz saxophonist Jorge Anders. "There were so many influences when I was growing up, and I wanted to do something with them all. My father's concerts and studio work certainly affected me, as did the music of Brazil; it's so harmonically rich and so interesting melodically". After high school, Anders decided to continue her studies in New York. Her ongoing exposure to music of various sensibilities and her innate ability to fuse styles and formats were abundantly revealed in a few demo tracks she made on the cheap. Shortly thereafter, Anders became one of the only artists ever signed to Warner Bros. from unsolicited material.

Gabriela Anders debut CD, "Wanting" elicited much praise for Anders vision and impassioned vocal style. Anders unique marriage of pop, Latin and jazz resulted in Vogue and People, among others, describing Anders and her music as: "exotic and bold"; "wonderfully soulful"; and "one of the most distinctive new voices to hit the music scene in years" Gabriela Anders continues a journey of musical excellence and introspection with her "Eclectica", a collection of Brazilian, R&B and jazz- influenced songs, and with her new all Spanish release, "Latina”, Says Anders, "Growing as a musician is absolutely the most important thing to me". Some of today's most soulful musicians are featured on Eclectica and Latina: Wayne Krantz, Pedrito Martinez, ‘Negro’ Hernandez, John Benitez, Ron Lawrence, Cliff Lyons, Rick Savage, Luis Bonilla, Hector Martignon y Otmaro Ruiz, Romero Lumambo and Portinho. All songs on "Latina" are composed and arranged by Anders and feature a wide spectrum of latin rhythms: from salsa to bossa nova, from romantic ballads to afro Brazilian dance songs.

Brazil and Argentina are rivals in soccer and basketball. And the people speak different languages: Portuguese and Spanish. However, there's one remarkable young singer who defies cross-border feuds. Gabriela Anders was born in Argentina, has embraced the music of Brazil and resides in the United States. Her multi-nationalism is reflected in her music. This is brought to light with Last Tango in Rio , the long-awaited North American follow-up to Wanting.  Born into a family of musicians, Anders listened closely to her father, jazz saxophonist Jorge Anders, who appears on the new album. She also studied classical guitar and piano in her native Buenos Aires. "There were so many influences when I was growing up, and I wanted to do something with them all," Anders says. "My father's concerts and studio work certainly affected me, as did the music of Brazil; it's harmonically rich and so interesting melodically."

After high school, Anders decided to continue her musical studies in New York and, after a short while, she began doing studio and club work. Her rising prominence on those scenes led to two recording projects with top producer Sergio George. Through him, she had the opportunity to sing for Grover Washington Jr., Marc Anthony and Celia Cruz. She's also recorded or performed with Rick Braun, George Duke and Eric Benet. Anders was part of the highly acclaimed Casino Lights '99 , a two-disc set recorded during the Montreux Jazz Festival, and she continues a journey of musical excellence and introspection with Eclectica , a collection of Brazilian, R&B and jazz-influenced songs, and Latina , an all-Spanish adventure. On Last Tango in Rio , Anders offers original material, some jazz standards and a tribute to her native city. "Abracadabra," the second track, is a definitive example. Anders mixes a bossa nova rhythm with a European flavor and jazz seasonings for a song equally suited for sitting back and listening, or getting up and dancing.

She follows that with a modern interpretation of "Our Love Is Here to Stay," a good song that's even better when the performer adopts it as if it were her own. That's a treatment Anders gives to the other standards as well, offering an upbeat, percussive rendering of "God Bless the Child," helped along by sharp bass lines by John Benitez, percussion and drum play by Portinho, and Gabriel Rivano on the bandoneon, a typical Argentine instrument. Still, with all the excellent musicianship, it's Anders' voice that makes this record. The listener may easily be swept away, feeling a personal connection with the singer as she croons here and scats there. Anders is as enchanting as she is multicultural. And just when you get used to her softer side, she brings on the funk with "The Buenos Aires Mix," a saucy, sassy, nocturnal beat. Last Tango in Rio is a long overdue presentation from one of contemporary jazz's most enchanting voices.
