Born and raised in New England, Eddie (Haydn) Higgins started his professional career in Chicago, while studying at the Northwestern University Music School. For twenty years Eddie worked at some of Chicago's best known jazz clubs, including the Brass Rail, Preview Lounge, Blue Note, Cloister Inn and Jazz Ltd. His longest and most memorable job was at the London House, where he led the house trio for twelve years, playing opposite the biggest jazz stars of the 50's and 60's, including Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans and many others. During his stay in Chicago, Eddie recorded a number of albums under his auspices and many more as a sideman with a wide variety of musicians, ranging in style from Coleman Hawkins to Wayne Shorter, Don Goldie to Freddie Hubbard, Jack Teagarden to Al Grey. Eddie's versatility is well-known: he has backed singers, done studio work as both pianist and arranger and worked in every jazz medium from Dixieland to Modern Jazz.

In 1970, Eddie moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and began spending winters in Florida and summers on Cape Cod, where he plays local clubs and enjoys sailing and tennis. Since the early 1980's, Eddie has traveled widely on the jazz festival circuit and has performed frequently in Europe and Japan. His releases on the Japanese “Venus” label have earned him number one in jazz sales on more than one album. In 1988, Eddie and jazz singer/pianist/artist Meredith d'Ambrosio were married and have become a popular team at clubs and festivals, as well as recording for Sunnyside Records. In recent years, Eddie's recording activity has become even more prolific and attention to his play has grown to be more widely recognized. He has received praise from such as Nat Hentoff and Gary Giddons. Attempts to describe his style are exemplified by the following: To these tributes, I would add that Eddie's play can be extraordinarily moving. Listen to his treatment of Brazilian themes on “Speaking of Jobim” and solo work on the album “Time On My Hands,” the latter which achieves an almost unparalleled marriage of style, composition and audio fidelity. You would think it was being played in a cathedral. https://musicians.allaboutjazz.com/eddiehiggins

For the initial release on the German Nagel-Heyer label, trombonist George Masso heads an all-star mainstream septet that also includes clarinetist Kenny Davern, trumpeter Randy Sandke, the fine Engligh tenor Danny Moss, pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Len Skeat and drummer Jake Hanna. Together they jam on eight George Gershwin songs plus Higgins plays a "Porgy and Bess Medley." Although the liner notes (unlike later releases) are in German, the music easily comunicates; highlights include a blazing "Strike Up the Band," "Soon," and 11-1/2-minute versions of "Somebody Loves Me" and "S'Wonderful." ~Scott Yanow

Bass – Phil Flanigan; Clarinet – Allan Vaché; Cornet, Flugelhorn – Warren Vaché; Drums – Ed Metz Jr.; Guitar – Howard Alden; Piano – Eddie Higgins. Recorded 19-20 Feb, 1998 in Orlando, FL.

Profuse thanks are given to mom Madeline, who worked at Decca Records when she met Warren Sr., then insisted her boys practice daily. The result is this recording, played by two of the best baby boomers in the swing jazz business. Warren Jr.'s cornet musings have never been livelier or more clearly executed, while Allan Vaché, truly an underrated clarinetist, shines with the best of the current crop. Guitarist Howard Alden, the great pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Phil Flanigan, and drummer Ed Metz, Jr. round out the excellent backup band. Some of the 12 tunes have the full sextet. Warren plays flügelhorn with Higgins only for the pristine "London by Night," and it's just Higgins, Flanigan, and Metz for the Benny Goodman evergreen "If Dreams Come True," Higgins quoting "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me." Dig Warren, Alden, and Flanigan, and Alden especially plucky solo during Bud Freeman's "The Eel's Nephew," while Allan and Alden go it by themselves on the serene "Londonderry Air" aka "Danny Boy." There are three Duke Ellington tunes; "Just Squeeze Me" with Warren's fresh-squeezed wah-wah cornet, Higgins quoting "Music, Music, Music," a bass guitar workout introducing the well-swung "Cottontail," Higgins quoting "We're in the Money," and the joyful guitar-clarinet-cornet unison melody of "What Am I Here For?" There's a fresh take on Miles Davis' "All Blues," changing up the harmonics of the waltz, Higgins shimmering piano, and Warren's muted, Miles-evoked sound accenting. A bossa version of "Tangerine" is quite different, Alden's fat chords and cat-quick lines form the centerpiece. For evidence of Allan's clarinet mastery check out his upbeat take on "I'll Remember April," Higgins quoting "Jeannine," while the out-and-out swinger "Just Friends" is staggering in its counterpointed trading of lines between brothers, quite deserving of a huge wow! It's unlikely you'll hear a hotter band than this one for this type of authentic, traditional jazz. Never stuffy, always on top of every fresh bar, with no looking back to past glories despite the older repertoire, the Vache brothers conjure something extra special within their musical partnership. Highly recommended. ~Michael G. Nastos

This album is another welcome entry in the reissues of the Chicago-based Vee-Jay jazz albums recorded during the 1950s and 1960s. One of the Two-in-One series (which takes two sessions originally issued on separate LPs and puts them on a single CD), there's a serious amount of music provided in this case, over 76 minutes. The first set comes from a straight-ahead 1960 session lead by pianist Eddie Higgins, with Chicago-based trumpet player Paul Serrano and Count Basie tenor man Frank Foster joining in on three of the album's seven cuts. The Higgins-composed "Zarac, the Evil One" is the source of one of the album's more attractive tracks. Starting off with Serrano and Foster playing in unison, with Higgins' piano comping behind them and seguing into a Higgins' boppish solo. Higgins' deftness on the piano is heard best on "Falling in Love with Love" and "AB's Blues," where he and the rhythm section, which keeps things moving along throughout the album, go all out to give a bouncy, buoyant rendition of these tunes.

The Benny Green half of the CD was initially issued in 1958 under the title The Swingin'est and was the first jazz album issued by Vee-Jay. It's a much more interesting session than the Higgins' set. Featuring such young lions of the 1950s bop scene as Green, Nat Adderley, and Gene Ammons who are joined by Count Basie players Frank Wess and, once again, Frank Foster the session is also graced by the inimitable piano player from Detroit, Tommy Flanagan, with Al "Tootie" Heath anchoring the rhythm section. This is one of those blowing sessions that replaced the older jam sessions during the 1950s and 1960s. And blow these players did on such barn burners as "Jugging Around." On this piece, Adderley's trumpet is sassy, while Heath's drums lay out a breathtaking beat. There's excellent ensemble work on Foster's "Going South." Saving the best for last, "Swingin' for Benny" kicks off with a blistering Flanagan solo with the ensemble following in behind and then everyone taking off with extended solo relentlessly urged on by Heath's drums. This latter piece was originally issued on an LP called Juggin' Around. This album has fine music played by young, vigorous musicians, most of whom became jazz giants.~Dave Nathan http://www.allmusic.com/album/eddie-higgins-the-swinginest-mw0000415278

Following the 2012 release of Resonance's archival set Echoes of Indiana Avenue, author, photo journalist, and private collector Duncan Schiedt approached the label to see if they'd be interested in releasing a live tape of Wes Montgomery he owned. It was a 1959 set where the guitarist sat in with the Eddie Higgins Trio, then featuring drummer Walter Perkins (and also an unknown bassist). Resonance arranged for the rights and released One Night in Indy in 2016. Montgomery's star was just beginning to rise he recorded two sessions for Riverside in 1958 and Higgins established himself as an attraction on the Chicago circuit but, at this time, they were essentially operating on the same level of stardom and, appropriately enough, this date showcases them equally, with Montgomery's rich runs nicely accentuating the elegance of Higgins. If the audio is a little rough at times the set was recorded on a homemade recorder in 1959, after all  the performances never are: even when the tempo starts cooking on "Stompin' at the Savoy," this music rolls easy and the appeal is that mellow yet lively interplay, as each leader seems to want nothing more than to play off of the other. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine  http://www.allmusic.com/album/one-night-in-indy-mw0002836451

This studio session featuring clarinetist Allan Vache and tenor saxophonist Harry Allen together was a long overdue idea, since they had worked together frequently at jazz festivals and parties; they're joined by a first-class rhythm section of pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Phil Flanigan, and drummer Eddie Metz. Most of the material consists of familiar standards from the swing era, including the easygoing "Jive at Five," a snappy "Tickle Toe," and a laid-back "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me." Flanigan contributed the lively swinger "Allan and Allen," while Higgins wrote the pretty ballad "Lake Ponchartrain Blues." There are also separate features for the two reedmen: Vache's lush, lyrical interpretation of "You Go to My Head" is matched by Allen's gorgeous take of the infrequently heard ballad "Where Are You." Vache also adds a campy (though not exactly memorable) vocal on "Straighten up and Fly Right." This is one of many memorable recordings that has helped to elevate Nagel Heyer into one of the top labels covering mainstream jazz at the beginning of the 21st century. ~Ken Dryden

Eddie Higgins has been on the jazz scene for a long time, but he seems to be a best-kept secret by those able to track down his various releases for independent labels in the U.S. or Japanese titles, such as this one from Venus. This 2003 session features the veteran purely as a soloist, performing a dozen of his favorite ballads. While most of them are time-tested standards such as the elegant "My Funny Valentine," the shimmering "Beautiful Love," or "Skylark" (with an Asian-sounding introduction that suggests the humor of its composer), there are some lesser-known gems as well. The bittersweet ballad "Yellow Days" hardly pops up on many jazz CDs, though Higgins' richly textured arrangement should attract other musicians to it. Even though one doesn't hear the lyrics to "Again," this seasoned pianist seems to get across the implied apology to a loved one for a senseless quarrel. "Dance Only with Me," an overlooked jewel by the masterful songwriting team of Comden, Green, and Styne, is arranged as an elegant, deliberate waltz. Recorded and mixed in glorious 24-bit digital sound, this is easily one of Eddie Higgins' best all-around recordings. ~ Ken Dryden  http://www.allmusic.com/album/you-dont-know-what-love-is-mw0000331508

A solid bop-based pianist, Eddie Higgins has never become a major name, but he has been well-respected by his fellow musicians for decades. After growing up in New England, he moved to Chicago, where he played in all types of situations before settling in to a long stint as the leader of the house trio at the London House (1957-1969). Higgins moved back to Massachusetts in 1970 and went on to freelance, often accompanying his wife, vocalist Meredith D'Ambrosio, and appearing at jazz parties and festivals. Eddie Higgins has led sessions of his own for Replica (1958), Vee-Jay (1960), Atlantic, and Sunnyside; back in 1960, he recorded as a sideman for Vee-Jay with Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter. His swinging, authoritative trombone style is the gravy that makes this meal a feast for anybody's ears. Supported by such greats as Milt Hinton, Eddie Higgins, Bucky Pizzarelli, and Butch Miles, Bill plays some unique and exciting choruses on standards and swing tunes that will delight you. By the time this album was recorded in 2002, veteran pianist Eddie Higgins had become one of the most popular pianists in Japan, thanks in no small part to the independent label Venus Records. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, Venus asked its fans which songs they would like to hear the Eddie Higgins Trio perform in their new album. Higgins chose 12 songs out of the top 25 and added two of his own choosing. It might be interesting for you to learn what songs are preferred by Japanese jazz fans. With a lot of ballads, this is in most part a mellow, relaxing album. Supported by the deep, tuneful bass of Jay Leonhart and sensitive drums of Joe Ascione, Higgins plays these popular songs with elegance and restrained passion. His musical ideas are always flowing and harmonies beautiful. Highlights include "Nardis" where the trio picks up the tempo and intensity, "Dear Old Stockholm" (the No. 1 choice of fans) and "Witchcraft" (swinging Sinatra number, anyone?). Great songs, wonderfully played. And as always the case with Venus Records, great sound. http://www.elusivedisc.com/Eddie-Higgins-Trio-Dear-Old-Stockholm-SACD/productinfo/VENSA0011/

(5:45) 11. Cheek To Cheek

Although he has been a top clarinetist for over 30 years and a popular attraction at classic jazz parties and festivals, clarinetist Chuck Hedges has had relatively few opportunities to lead his own record dates; in fact, this Arbors CD was his first session as a leader in nine years. Pianist Eddie Higgins (showcased on his "Magnolia Rag"), bassist Bob Haggart and drummer Gene Estes are swinging and supportive of Hedges, who is in top form on such numbers as "There Is No Greater Love," "Samba Dese Days," and "Cheek to Cheek." A superior advanced swing date. ~ Scott Yanow  http://www.allmusic.com/album/no-greater-love-mw0000029794

The Eddie Metz Jr Trio - Bridging The Gap

[4:53] 12. More Than You Know
[4:44] 13. Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself

Veteran jazz musicians like drummer Eddie Metz, Jr. encounter the same challenge all of the time, particularly when they play weekend jazz parties: the obvious aging of their audience. Although many older fans resist the playing of newer pop material, musicians have to find a way to draw new listeners to eventually replace older ones. So he recruited Italian pianist Rossano Sportiello and bassist Nicki Parrott, with fellow jazz party regulars John Allred (trombone) and Harry Allen (tenor sax) added on several tracks. There are plenty of great old standards: delightful, swinging trio settings of "Falling in Love with Love," "I'm Old Fashioned," "The More I See You," and a sublime "More Than You Know." Modern pop is represented by enjoyable interpretations of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed" and Steely Dan's "Bodhisattva" and a bossa nova setting of 1970s Italian pop singer Gino Vannelli's "Crazy Life," featuring Allred carrying the melody, while Parrott sings "One Less Bell to Answer," a hit decades earlier for the 5th Dimension.

Metz penned the understated "NER Blues," which will be immediately recognized by any seasoned jazz fan as a tribute to Count Basie, while the full quintet is heard in the sassy "Huggin' Higgins," a peppy salute to veteran pianist Eddie Higgins, another jazz party regular who crosses paths with the rest of the band on occasion. Metz has done his part to bridge the generation gap among jazz fans; now it is up to the listeners to take the first step across it. ~ Ken Dryden
