Influenced by Nancy Wilson, Marlena Shaw and Sarah Vaughan, Denise King is an expressive, big-voiced singer who combines jazz with elements of R&B, blues and gospel. King was born and raised in Philadelphia, where she was exposed to R&B as a child and discovered jazz at 12 thanks to an uncle who was an avid record collector. After graduating from high school, the Philadelphian entered the medical field and earned her living as a technician and a family-planning counselor. King was in her early 30s when she started doing club gigs around Philly, and eventually, she became a full-time singer. Though she's no stranger to standards, one of King's strong points has been her ability to provide jazz interpretations of rock and soul hits -- in fact, she has turned everything from Santana's "Evil Ways" to Ruby & the Romantics' "Our Day Will Come" into swinging acoustic jazz. King started recording in the 1990s, offering Live In Japan: I Remember You in 1993, Now Ain't That Love in 1996 and Simply Mellow in 1997. ~by Alex Henderson

They have performed over 70 gigs in the past two years, with Denise King's warm voice echoed by the original tracks composed by Olivier Hutman. The concept of this new album was to go beyond jazz to create a popular music, modern and lively, but just as technical as the previous album. The voice of Denise King is beautifully accompanied by the piano and the keyboards of Olivier Hutman, with the double bass of Darryl Hall and Steve Williams on drums. On this opus, Stephane Belmondo excels on the trumpet and bugle with Olivier Temime on the saxophone. A genuine beat, full of emotion and swing.

Denise King sings jazz standards with touches of the blues, soul and even gospel in a voice steeped in a sophisticated, swinging, sometimes soulful, satin style much like one of her idols, Sarah Vaughan. Denise King has sung in clubs and concert halls in Philadelphia, New York, Paris, Italy, Turkey, Brazil, UK, Africa, Germany, Austria and Japan during the past 20 years. Her career began late and she has proclaimed herself a torch bearer. During her career she has performed with many renown Jazz musicians such as Archie Shepp, Chris McBride, Massimo Farao, Tony Match, Peter Giron, Chris Culpo Lex Humphries, Sid Simmons, Arthur Harper, Sam Dockery, Wayne Dockery, Jerry Weldon, Cecil McBee, Curtis Lundy, Steve WIlliams to name a few. She has recorded six CD’s which continue to delight her many fans. In 2009 with Cristal Records No Tricks was released and very well received. In 2011 she was nominated Best Jazz Vocals in France by Academie Du jazz. Her second release with Cristal Records Give Me The High sign was released in 2012 to great reviews. She is currently on tour throughout Europe.

Denise King was born and raised in West Philadelphia and is the third of five children. She was always an artistic person, focusing at a very young age on visual arts, fashion design and dance. Born with a passion for anything artistic, she danced and sang in high school. At thirteen she was introduced to Jazz by an uncle, Herbert Tatum, who had an extensive collection of Jazz LP’s and a cousin Cynthia who had a love of Nina Simone. Her “studies” involved hours of listening to the Jazz greats, both vocalists and instrumentalists. Denise borrowed phrasing styles from Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra. She gained an appreciation for lyrics from Lil Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson, Carmen McCrae and Nina Simone. Listening as intensely to Jazz as she did R&B or music of her era she had no idea that her listening sessions were preparing her for a career in music.

She was “discovered” by a friend who heard her singing outside of her home and introduced her to the world of Jazz performance. The early gigs were difficult in that she was painfully stage shy. But with the help of Sam Reed, sax man and leader of the legendary Uptown Theater Orchestra she overcame her stage fright. Her early performance experiences involved sharing the stage with many legends, Butch Ballard, Arthur Harper, Sam Dougherty, Cecil Payne, Jymie Merritt, Bootsie Barnes, Lex Humphries and many, many more.10

A singer, who cares about the song, Ms King said: “I’m a sucker for the lyrics and not interested in vocal gymnastics. I want to hear the story the writer has to tell.” And for this, those who share King”s love of Gershwin and Porter, can only be thankful. She sings pop and jazz standards with touches of the blues, soul and even gospel in a voice steeped in a sophisticated, swinging, sometimes soulful, satin style much like one of her idol, Sarah Vaughan.

She is a self-proclaimed torch bearer, a keeper of the flame holding the preservation and presentation of the traditional style of jazz singing close to her heart. No gimmicks, no pyrotechnics, just an intense focus on the melody and the lyrical content.

With a voice described as velvet smooth, warm and steeped in sophistication, she captivates you and holds you with every note. In this age of auto-tune, quick fixes and artistic gimickery, her love of people, performance style, and energy have ensured her a spot in the jazz community for a long time.

Denise King is a Philadelphia vocalist who has made the world her oyster with her unique ability to navigate between rhythm and blues and sultry jazz standards. Discovered in the 1980s by an R&B songwriter-producer, King quickly found her way in the City of Brotherly Love with some of the top musicians in both popular and jazz settings. In the New Millennium, she has been shuttling back and forth between the U.S. and Europe delivering stellar performances on both continents. With her smooth and sultry voice, impeccable sense of timing, interpretive depth, and immersion in the tradition of the great singers, King brings out the best in any genre. For example, in just one of her albums, Fever, she is equally at home with Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave," the unsung ballad, "Never Let Me Go," the Shirelles' pop song, "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," and the rocking "I've Got My Mojo Workin.'" She takes each song on its own merit while adding her unmistakable personal stamp. Among her various projects, she does a traveling Tribute to Sarah Vaughan, one of her idols with whom she shares many fine qualities. King also has a strong personality and life story that can be entertaining and at the same time cut deeply into the soul. ~by Victor L. Schermer

The new recording by the Vintage Orchestra takes on quite a rare repertoire : the vocal music composed by the great trumpet player and composer Thad Jones. The instrumental music composed and arranged for his own big band is known all over the world and has been recorded and played by so many different bands, but Jones’ arrangements for a lead singer from 1965 to 1968 have never been recorded since, nor have the music charts been edited. In order to play this music we asked Dominique Mandin, Stéphane Guillaume, François Biensan, Jon Boutellier and Erick Poirier to make transcriptions, not to copy the originals but mostly to create new interpretations of this repertoire for a band which has been working on Thad Jones’ music for the last 15 years. Denise King, internationally acclaimed American singer, and Walter Ricci, a very talented young singer, are the ideal voices for this laid aside repertoire, supported by the Vintage Orchestra. This new international project by The Vintage Orchestra is both daring and unexpected

Philly-based vocalist Denise King was doing just fine with her late-blooming career as a lush, soulful interpreter of standards. Then she met French pianist-arranger-composer Olivier Hutman. They initially teamed a dozen years ago in Paris, but it was their delayed reunion in late 2009 that proved the catalyst for King’s advancement to a richer, more rewarding level of artistry. After a couple of European tours, King and Hutman united with bassist Daryl Hall, drummer Steve Williams and saxophonist Olivier Temime to record No Tricks. Under Hutman’s influence, King was transformed, unleashing a looser, more multifaceted sound that suggests Tina Turner by way of Cassandra Wilson, with a hint of smooth Sade sophistication.

Working with the same stellar lineup augmented by trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo, King outdoes herself with Give Me the High Sign. Again there are several stunning standards, including exceptional renditions of “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “Blame It on My Youth” and “Day Dream,” and an understatedly powerful reading of Gil Scott-Heron’s “Save the Children.” More interesting, though, is the potpourri of Hutman compositions, three featuring King lyrics. Venturing from the layered bleakness of “I Lost My Way,” bruised wisdom of “Mellow Mellow” and sassy kiss-off of “Don’t Overact” to the tally of social ills that is “What Did They Say Today?,” King brings her Hutman-ignited sea change to magnificent fruition. ~ Christopher Loudon  http://jazztimes.com/articles/107981-give-me-the-high-sign-denise-king-olivier-hutman
