A critically acclaimed performer of both standards and contemporary music, Jeanne MacDonald's talent has garnered multiple awards for her work in cabaret. In January she received the 2004 Nightlife Award for Cabaret Female Vocalist at New York City's Town Hall, followed by the 2004 MAC Award (Manhattan Assoc. of Cabarets & Clubs) for Female Vocalist in May. This performer has also earned a BACK STAGE Bistro Award and the prestigious MAC Hanson Award. In 1999, MacDonald was named one of the Ten Best Female Solo Acts in cabaret by InTheater Magazine and she has been a Cabaret Hotline Online Critics Choice for Female Vocalist.

Originally from Freeport (Long Island) NY, Jeanne MacDonald began her cabaret career at the Bradstan Country Hotel in White Lake, NY in 1991. She continues to perform there each year in their distinguished Inn Cabaret Series in The Nancy LaMott Room, which has been host to such talents as the late Nancy LaMott, Karen Mason, Ann Hampton Callaway, Karen Akers, the legendary Margaret Whiting and the incomparable Julie Wilson.

Some of the other rooms in which MacDonald has appeared are the renowned Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, the FireBird Cafe, Danny's Skylight Room and the former Eighty Eight's. Jeanne has performed in the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Annual Cabaret Convention at Town Hall and in The Amazing Singing Voice: A Celebration in Song to benefit the Schein Voice & Laryngeal Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Other appearances include the Manhattan Plaza Aids Project Benefit with Audra McDonald and Robert Cuccioli, MAC/ASCAP Songwriters' Showcases, Ruby Rims' Annual Teddy Cares Benefits, and the Holiday Cabaret Benefit for Hale House.

In 1997 Jeanne participated in the Eugene O'Neill Cabaret Symposium and was invited the following year to perform in their Master Teachers? Evening. MacDonald has performed at such venues as the Turning Stone Casino and Resort Hotel in Oneida, NY, Eighty Eight?s Cafe Society in Hollywood, FL, the Hotel Syracuse, and the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon, NY.

As a recording artist, Jeanne?s debut CD Company, produced and arranged by her longtime musical director Rick Jensen, was nominated for a MAC Award for Recording of the Year. Lesley Alexander of WRTN-FM/WVOX-AM had this to say about the recording: The long awaited release of Jeanne MacDonald's first CD entitled Company (no, not Sondheim but a wonderful Rickie Lee Jones song) is a blend of nostalgia and newly mined material including the title track which shows off MacDonald's pure and mellifluous vocals. It's the sweetest, warmest voice. So easy on the ears.

Grammy Award winning producer Andrew Gouché has completed his long-anticipated debut album, We Don’t Need No Bass. With over 30 years of experience as the bassist for many R&B and Gospel legends as Prince and the New Power Generation, Gladys Knight, Andraé Crouch, The Winans, and musical director for Chaka Khan, his project speaks to his Gospel roots but showcases a broader musical gift blending Jazz and R&B into a soulful variety of songs. Although a self-proclaimed church musician, Gouché shows the world with this album that he is much more, as We Don’t Need No Bass reaches out to music lovers of all ages and genres.

A world-renowned bassist, musical director, producer and composer, he is best known for his creatively original bass lines and a unique sound that bass players around the world have sought to emulate. His distinctive sound is the core of the Andrew Gouché signature line of bass guitars. Having graced the cover of Bass Player Magazine and industry interviews over the years, he has been tagged as a Gospel legend.

Coming from a musical family, the Los Angeles native started out singing in the church choir where his grandfather was the pastor and his mother the lead singer. At eight years old he took up the trumpet, which he played for 7 years, until he discovered the bass guitar at age 15. Then it was clear, Andrew had “truly found what he was meant to do in life.” He continued to hone his skills while playing with Rev. James Cleveland in the late 70’s on numerous live and studio recordings. International tour bookings with Andraé Crouch, The Winans and The Hawkins Family soon followed. His standout performances ushered in a new rhythm to Gospel songbooks.

A true pioneer, he has made an indelible mark on the history of Gospel music with the addition of bass guitar when there was none in church. Today, bass guitar is a must-have in churches across America. He has paved the way and inspired today’s generation of Gospel and R&B bassists.

His successful experiences in the Gospel industry eventually opened the door for his first R&B gig with Cheryl Lynn. This quickly led to a regular call for recording sessions across all genres including, but not inclusive to, Prince, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Julio Iglesias, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin, Y’anna, Hidden Beach Unwrapped Series, Jimmy Reid, LA Jazz Syndicate, Smokey Robinson, Patti LaBelle, Judith Hill, Kirk Franklin, Donna Summer, Gladys Knight, Yolanda Adams, Dianne Warren and Heather Headley. His career has also led him to play on some of the largest world stages in television and film as, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Martha Stewart Show, MTV Awards, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Saturday Night Live, Soul Train, The Grammy Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, The Rosie O’ Donnell Show, Pat Sajak Show, The Keenan Show, Arsenio Hall Show, Command Performance at the White House with Gladys Knight, Sinbad Soul Music Festival, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Morning Show, Diana Ross’ TV Special, Amen, Jimmy Kimmel Show, The Five Heartbeats, Leap Of Faith, The Lion King and The Color Purple, and Musical Director for 10 yrs of The Mc Donalds Gospelfest.

His professionalism, exceptional musical ear and creativity naturally evolved into music production. He found success in this arena as a contributing producer on the Mary Mary debut album Thankful when he was awarded his first Grammy® and later as a 2008 GMA Dove® Award nominee for Traditional Gospel Album, after producing numerous records for the Gospel Music Workshop of America and many other individual artists.

This German born Canadian resident is a true storyteller. After the highly acclaimed debut CD ‘Spark Within’, Mystéfy continues her musical journey with ‘Me’: Unvarnished and intimate are the songs she wrote for her new album. This doesn’t imply all tunes on ‘Me’ are autobiographical – but everything Mystéfy composes and sings about relates to her, and reflects impressions and experiences Mystéfy has shared and lived through. Stories happening in her world, mostly true, sometimes altered, exaggerated or told in a witty fashion.
Mystéfy is highly intuitive and sensitive to her surroundings and easily picks up vibes – this is why her lyrics are intense, her songs are touching yet put listeners at ease. Mystéfy embraces what we humans are made of: She is close to our emotions.
Also, Mystéfy is a practitioner – and this reflects on her life and music. She is your nice-neighbor-next-door kind of artist, no diva, no jazz singer who goes out to revamp the same old songs. Alas, she sang jazz standards, on many stages, and has a repertoire of over a hundred of them. But it wasn’t enough. With her classically trained voice and a range of over 3 octaves, she prefers to charm listeners with self-penned songs. Also, she loves to entertain. Her secret – the artist names says it all: Mystéfy is a mystic by soul. An emigrant and hence a natural at being home in different worlds, she is a spiritual being, a singer/songwriter, and a passionate painter. No surprise then that she has access to a greater artistry palette than many others. Mystéfy also loves horseback riding, her garden and feels at home anywhere near water – be it an ocean or a mere creek. The zodiac sign of this visionary mermaid? Almost needless to say: Piscean – the fishes!

With the 90s incarnation of the legendary Golden Gate Quartet, led by original member Orlandus Wilson and his nephew Paul Brembly plus long timer Frank Davis and new kid Charles West, the GGQ give the world one of the most beautful Christmas albums of all times.

The Golden Gate Quartet (aka The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is an American vocal group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. It is the most successful of all of the African-American gospel music groups who sang in the jubilee quartet style.

The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at the Booker T. Washington College in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone; d. 1980), William Landford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor; d. 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Landford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.

Sugarpie & the Candymen began in 2008, when five musicians from Piacenza and Cremona – small towns in Northern Italy – joined their forces and the shared passion for swing music, monouche jazz, pop, and vocal close harmonies.

A band was born, with the challenge to marry all these musical styles.

The band is made up of singer Miss Sugarpie, aka Georgia Ciavatta, and her Candymen Jacopo Delfini (gipsy guitar and harmonies), Renato Podestà (electric guitar, banjo and harmonies), Roberto Lupo (drums) and Claudio Ottaviano (double bass).

Very soon the band became a full-time commitment, starting an intense almost non-stop tour in hundreds of jazz clubs around Italy and Europe.

This first period allowed Sugarpie and the Candymen to work out both their sound and their repertoire: their musical caleidoscope has the most diverse artists one close to the other, such as Led Zeppelin and Django Reinhardt, The Beatles and Bessie Smith, Van Halen and Benny Goodman, Guns 'n' Roses and Ray Charles, Queen and Peggy Lee and so on.

The challenge has been won!

In 2010 the band kept evolving and started writing and performing their original songs, both in English and in Italian.

They started playing the bigger stages of prestigious festivals all around Europe, and they even did a brief US tour.

Sugarpie and the Candymen have released three albums under the IRMA Records label, the first, eponymous “Sugarpie and the Candymen” in 2009, “Swing and Roll” in 2011 and “Waiting for the One” in 2014.

Some of their songs had radio airplay on the major public radio stations in Italy (RadioRai1 and RadioRai2) and Switzerland (RSI1, 2, 3). In December 2011 they performed live at the historic radio program Caterpillar, on RadioRai2.

To further enhance their sound, the band had the opportunity to collaborate both live and in the studio with some brilliant Italiand and American musicians, such as Michael Supnick, Dean Zucchero, Paolo Tomelleri, Rudy Migliardi, Gregory Agid, Davide Ghidoni, Gianni Di Benedetto and Mattia Cigalini.

In summer 2014 the band met Renzo Arbore, a very famous Italian TV and radio personality and jazz musician himself, and started a collaboration together on occasions like the Christmas Concert in the Vatican (aired on the national TV in December 2014), the opening night of the Cremona Jazz Festival (April 2015), and the web/radio program Webnotte during the Umbria Jazz festival in July 2015.

The Pacific Northwest-based American Gipsy Swing formation Pearl Django pays tribute to the genre's originator not only by name. Their record label is Modern Hot Records, another graceful bow to the original Hot Club of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Under Paris Skies even appropriates the original locale to conjure up a present-day bohemian Manouche/Sinti setting of musical French outdoor cafes and bistros where this type of ensemble - lead guitar, rhythm guitar, double bass, violin, sometimes accordion or clarinet -- still keeps the flame alive.

While not of the ungodly virtuoso caliber of a Jimmy Rosenberg, Romane, Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Frank Vignola or Fapy Lafertin, Neil Andersson's lead guitar is firmly planted in this at times snazzy, at times wistfully romantic milieu. Bolstered by seven original compositions and 9 others -- only two of which are Reinhardt/Grappelli tunes -- the group wisely concentrates on lighthearted charm that doesn't require diabolical chops to make this album a wonderfully evocative mood setter. Even the novice will peg the proper scene in an instant.

If Paris is the city of love, then Pearl Django's music is its flirtatious accompaniment. Shimmying and bopping along on the jauntily swinging shrum-shrum of Dudley Hill's Gibson L-5 and Rick Leppanen's solid bass lines, the amiable feel-good riff trading between solo guitar and Michael Gray's violin has that laissez-faire, lazy-cool sophistication foreigners go to Paris for to catch and cultivate. Michael's thick-throated fiddle sashays along with minimal effort on the bow, like an old Cuban son dancer barely shuffling his feet yet floating with tireless elegance.

One of the most distinctive of all pianists, Erroll Garner proved that it was possible to be a sophisticated player without knowing how to read music, that a creative jazz musician can be very popular without watering down his music, and that it is possible to remain an enthusiastic player without changing one's style once it is formed. A brilliant virtuoso who sounded unlike anyone else, on medium tempo pieces, Erroll Garner often stated the beat with his left hand like a rhythm guitar while his right played chords slightly behind the beat, creating a memorable effect. His playful free-form introductions (which forced his sidemen to really listen), his ability to play stunning runs without once glancing at the keyboard, his grunting, and the pure joy that he displayed while performing were also part of the Erroll Garner magic. ~Scott Yanow

Abbey Lincoln was born in 1930 into a family of 12 children in Chicago and, later, Michigan. Her family remembers that she grew up at the piano, singing her own songs, and that she was beautiful. In her mid-20s, she appeared in her first Hollywood movie, wearing a dress that Marilyn Monroe had once worn. But as Lincoln found her own way, she burned that dress. In fact, she sewed her own clothes, cutting and stitching, writing poems and melodies, thinking and talking. As her pianist James Weidman says, "She could talk just about anything and give you a perspective you would have never thought of."

After 25 years of collaboration, Bob James and Nathan East have released their debut duo album The New Cool in September on Yamaha Entertainment Group. The New Cool marks new territory for legendary jazz pianist Bob James and bassist Nathan East, who’ve spent decades playing together in contemporary jazz quartet Fourplay but never before as an official duo. “The more I played with Nathan over the course of many live performances and spanning more than 20 years, the more in sync we were whether or not we had the anchor of the drums,” says James. “Something special happens when we only have each other’s notes to play off of, when the music is totally exposed.” Recorded entirely in Nashville, Tennessee, the album is a collection of original material contributed by both James and East, along with a small selection of standards. The duo’s musicianship is laid bare in a soulful reimagining of Irving Berlin’s “How Deep is the Ocean,” while the pair is joined by strings and woodwinds for a surprising take on Willie Nelson’s classic country hit “Crazy.” A two-time Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, arranger, and producer, Bob James is recognized as one of the original founders of smooth jazz. Long revered in the hip-hop community, James’ compositions are among the most sampled songs in history. Nathan East was 16 years old when he went on the road with Barry White and has spent the last four decades playing with a who’s who of performers, including Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, and Stevie Wonder. East performed on the 2014 Grammy Record of The Year, Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” The New Cool is produced by Chris Gero, Bob James, and Nathan East. It comes on the heels of East’s Grammy-nominated solo debut, Nathan East, also released on Yamaha Entertainment Group.

Hazel Scott's impressive bop piano was just one facet of talents that extended to playing classical music on the concert stage, singing and acting on-stage and onscreen, and hosting her own radio and television shows. A child prodigy, Scott entered Juilliard at the age of eight and made extensive concert tours of Europe, Africa, and the Near East before recording this date for Debut Records in 1955. For the set, she is accompanied by Debut's founders bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach. Given her talent and training, it's no surprise that Scott has technique to burn. Her energetic presence and personality and easy authority at the piano are amply demonstrated on the up-tempo numbers "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," "A Foggy Day," and "Mountain Greenery," and on the smouldering mid-tempo of Scott's "Git up From Here." The two ballad tracks are not quite so distinctive, although Scott's attractive performance of "Like Someone in Love" is elegantly detailed and nuanced. The alternate takes of "Git up From Here" and "Lament" are tentative compared to the main takes. Mingus and Roach are generally heard in supporting roles which they perform to perfection but they also get in some nice four- and eight-bar vignettes here and there. This music is also part of the Mingus boxed set The Complete Debut Recordings. ~ Jim Todd  http://www.allmusic.com/album/relaxed-piano-moods-mw0000087888

The outcome is a quirky, more playful sound that tests an interesting balance of darker harmonies and theatrical grooves, coupled with Melissa’s signature delicate and feminine vocal inflections. The album consists of seven originals, which range in style from jazz, blues, dreamy do-wop, to folk, to New Orleans durge. It also features four covers, including an Ellington ballad, and an ethereal cover of the Police’s “Every Little Thing”. With a central theme of the beauty and torment of a mess, the songs delve into the more extreme sides of emotions we feel when dealing with the fact that our lives can completely flip in the blink of an eye. https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/melissalauren6

Since his 2009 return to regular recording after a ten-year hiatus, trumpeter Herb Alpert has stayed busy releasing albums, some with his wife, vocalist Lani Hall, and others, like 2015's Come Fly with Me, on his own. 80 years old at the time of this release, Alpert has gone from instrumental pop icon of the '60s and '70s to journeyman performer with decades of experience to draw from. Working with a bevy of longtime collaborators including his nephew, programmer Randy "Badazz" Alpert, bassist/guitarist/producer Hussain Jiffry, keyboardist/producer Bill Cantos, keyboardist/guitarist Jeff Lorber, Alpert has crafted a breezy, low-key collection of originals and cover tunes, that nonetheless retains all of the melodic, jazz-inflected style of his classic recordings. Although Alpert takes on a handful of standards here, he approaches them with a creative sense of fun. To these ends, he reworks the classic Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen title track into a Day-Glo, Brazilian bossa nova production.

Similarly, on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," Alpert's supple trumpet is framed by lush orchestral strings that give way to a laid-back reggae groove accented by vibrato-soaked, Beatles-esque guitar hits. And it's not just Broadway standards that benefit from the Alpertization process the Beatles influence pops up again, this time with his stripped-down, ethereal take on the band's 1969 classic "Something." One of the most interesting and effective transformations here is Alpert's R&B style overhaul of "I've Got a Lot of Livin' to Do," from the musical Bye Bye Birdie. Kicking off with an introspective keyboard figure, the song sounds like something along the lines of Miles Davis covering a yearning '90s soul ballad.

As with most all of Alpert's post-2009 material, Come Fly with Me is a much more low-key and intimate recording than the productions that marked the best of his '60s Tijuana Brass period. That said, by keeping things simple, Alpert and his collaborators illuminate all of the tenderness and direct lyricism of his horn playing. ~ Matt Collar  http://www.allmusic.com/album/come-fly-with-me-mw0002865885

Giovanni Mirabassi Quartet - No Way Out

A stunning empathy between piano and vibraphone. Refined, balanced double bass and drums. An extremely sophisticated quartet, striking a perfect balance between the enlightened creativity of the 60's and today's modern sound. Pianist Giovanni Mirabassi, who is part of this tight quartet together with Stefon Harris on vibraphone, Gianluca Renzi on double bass and Lukmil Perez Herrera on drums, composed "No Way Out" as his second recording for CAM JAZZ. This album opens with the title track, a statement of intent as to the entire recording. The synergism between Mirabassi and Harris leads to steadily evolving musical ideas that unfold out of the pianist's themes.

All eight tunes in "No Way Out" are by the band leader: From "The Snow White Syndrome" and "What Was Dream About" to "L'Audace", "Canzone" and "Il Bandolero Stanco" (perhaps a tribute to an unappreciated movie featuring the Italian actor Renato Rascel?), listeners are returned to a Mirabassi in a state of grace, capable of composing in a fresh, highly inspired way, heeding the moods and refinement of the great Blue Note standards from the 60's. He is a full-fledged musician who knows how to express himself, for having accrued valuable artistic experience over his long-standing career: his playing with Chet Baker and Steve Grossman, when he was just seventeen; his moving to and growing up in Paris, when he was just over 20; and, not to forget, being awarded the "Django d'Or" and "Victoires du Jazz" prizes in 2002. All this flowed into "No Way Out", a recording to be listened to and enjoyed inquisitively, carefully and committedly, in order to discover how many ideas pop out of the hat of this talented, distinguished pianist from Perugia. ~ Editorial Reviews  http://www.amazon.com/No-Way-Out-Giovanni-Mirabassi/dp/B00PV3BKK0
