Just as sunshine pop offered a counterweight to psychedelic hard rock in the late 1960s, soft jazz evolved in the 1970s as a lighter FM alternative to the mystical psychedelic jazz fusion movement. Two artists who helped pioneer soft jazz were guitarist Lee Ritenour and keyboardist Dave Grusin. Mind you, these categories weren't exclusive. There was plenty of crossover by musicians between the two genres.

Now Ritenour and Grusin have teamed up on the newly released Brasil (Candid). Recorded in São Paulo, Brazil, Brasil turns to the bossa nova, gentle samba and a range of other rhythms combined with a hushed jazzy spin. The album features bassist Bruno Migotto, drummer Edu Ribeiro and percussionist Marcelo Costa. Added to the rhythm section are guitarist Chico Pinheiro on two tracks; composer, singer and guitarist Celso Fonseca on his composition “Meu Samba Torto” and vocalist Tatiana Parra. Other special guests include vocalist-composer Ivan Lins, harmonica player Grégoire Maret and guitarist Chico Pinheiro.

What I love about this album is that Ritenour's and Grusin's distinct instrumental sounds remained intact. Listening to the album, you know it's them. They simply are placed in a Brazilian setting, which allowed them to add young local musicians who have the authentic Brazilian flavor. The shift clearly was a great move, considering how surfy the music sounds. Perfect timing given the high temperatures across the country of late.

I also love the album's quiet demeanor. Overall, it has the sound of calm water washing up on the sand at night and then receding. The vocals are similarly serene. By Marc Myers

This popular set matches the brilliant harmonica player Toots Thielemans with such top Brazilian performers as Ivan Lins, Djavan, Oscar Castro-Neves, Dori Caymmi, Ricardo Silveira, João Bosco, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Luiz Bonfá, Edu Lobo and Eliane Elias, in addition to bassist Brian Bromberg, keyboardist Michael Lang, trumpeter Mark Isham and Dave Grusin. Thielemans is often in a supportive role behind the many soothing Brazilian singers and performers. The atmospheric date surprisingly does not have any Antonio Carlos Jobim songs, instead emphasizing lesser-known tunes (other than Toots' greatest hit "Bluesette"). Easily recommended to fans of Brazilian pop and jazz, this CD was soon followed by a second (and equally rewarding) set featuring many of the same performers. ~ Scott Yanow http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-brasil-project-mw0000081385

Composer, arranger and band leader Patrick Williams leads some of the finest jazz musicians in L.A. on another exciting portrait of big band swing on Home Suite Home, an album that's far more personal than all of his previous works. Documenting a personal homage to his family and his first musical love, Williams pays tribute to his children and wife stating "I tried to capture the essence of the personality of my wife and three children in musical terms...""is truly a labor of love." In addition to the all-star list of players on his band, Williams augments the group with vocalist's Patti Austin, Tierney Sutton and Frank Sinatra, Jr. gracing the stage with the likes of pianist Dave Grusin, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, drummer Peter Erskine and long-time associate, saxophonist Tom Scott as special guests adding the final ingredients to his most ambitious and masterful musical project to date.

A prolific composer, the band leader offers eight original tunes leading off with "52nd & Broadway" featuring vocalist Austin fronting a full-on swinging orchestra. The tribute to his children is the center-piece of the disc and incorporated in the three-part suite beginning with his first homage, this time for daughter Elizabeth on "Home Suite Home I. Elizabeth (The Beautiful Scientist)" featuring sparkling solos from tenor men Scott and Bob Sheppard. "Home Suite Home II. Greer (The Dreamer)" is a far more subdued and humble piece of music highlighted by the sweet solos from Dan Higgins. The last homage, "Home Suite Home III. Patrick B. (The Real Deal) features a robust ensemble and showcases the chops of drummer Erskine, saxophonist Scott and trumpeter Michael Stever.

Williams pens the most ambitious track for his wife of 54 years dedicating "Blue Mist (For Catherine)" where trumpeter of note Sandoval leads the band on a delicate lush and introspective soft ballad conveying a warm message of love. One of the non-tribute pieces of the set that stands out here is, the swinging orchestral piece "I've Been Around" featuring a smart duet between vocalists Frank Sinatra Jr. and Tierney Sutton.

Aside from dedications to his family, Williams also includes a tip of the hat to trumpeter/composer and arranger Neal Hefti on "A Hefti Dose of Basie (To The Memory of Neal Hefti)" as the band dose a marvelous impersonation of the Basie orchestra featuring the stylish horn of trumpeter Stever taking the honors on lead. The last non-family tribute is a big band swinging chart entitled "That's Rich (For Buddy)" with various members of the band on solo excursions including drummer Erskine doing his best impersonation of the late great drummer Buddy Rich. When all is done, Patrick Williams' Home Suite Home, is far more than a tribute to family, friends and the music he loves, it's a tasteful creatively-designed flavor of big band swing performed with gusto that hits home. ~Edward Blanco

Guitarist Lee Ritenour had just switched from Epic to Elektra when he cut Captain's Journey in 1978. It was a followup to the successful crossover work Captain Fingers and used a similar strategy: tight, hook-laden arrangements, polished production, and minimal solo space. What individual things it has are dominated by Ritenour, a supremely talented guitarist who doesn't display that much of it with these arrangements. ~ Ron Wynn https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-captains-journey-mw0000120708

Ever since the first wave of Jobim and Gilberto mania broke, the world has gratefully bathed in the inexhaustible flow of melody that emanates from Brazil. Ivan Lins is one of the Brazilian composers to have made a deep impression on the jazz world, along with Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi and Egberto Gismonti, (to whom Daniels recorded a tribute in 2018). Mark Murphy devoted an entire album (1986’s Night Mood) to the songs of Lins, and it’s easy to see why the Brazilian’s often melancholy compositions appealed to Murphy. The songs here are all from a relatively short but turbulent period 1977 to 1983 during which Brazil chafed under a brutal American-backed military dictatorship.

As the title suggests, this new album is a labour of love headed up by veteran clarinettist, flautist and saxophonist Eddie Daniels, whose pure, liquid tone cascades through every track. It should be said that lovers of cutting edge jazz are not the target audience for Night Kisses: there’s no dissonance, no tension it’s all melody, sweetened yet further by the Harlem Quartet string ensemble, who not only provide a soothing pad for Daniels and the rhythm section, but also sometimes offer a pseudo-classical introduction to the arrangements, as on A Noite. Piano duties are shared between Josh Nelson, Kuno Schmid, Dave Grusin and Bob James, each of whom has also arranged at least two of the tunes. Kevin Axt is the bass player, and Mauricio Zottarelli is on drums.

Personal favourites here include the opener A Voz Do Povo (The People’s Voice), which alternates between bossa and swing, and features great soloing from Daniels on flute and Nelson on piano. Of course, in any collection there will be absences: surprisingly there’s no sign here of Love Dance or Começar de Novo better known as The Island and it would have been nice to hear a Daniels version of Antes Que Seja Tarde (Before We Lose Tomorrow). But we do get Velas Içadas (Hoisted Sails) and Lembra. Curiously, the comprehensive and detailed sleeve notes, written by Daniels, Lins and label boss George Klabin, make much of Vitor Martins’ lyrics to the original compositions, and the danger he and Lins faced in writing songs which were seen at the time as subversive. “We used to have censors following us all the time and cutting our lyrics,” writes Lins. The two were forced to use a lot of metaphor to avoid expressing themselves too openly. “One trick was, write more lyric than you need because the censor needed to cut something. If they cut, they were happy.” The booklet even devotes many pages to the English translations of Martins’ lyrics. But although the songs were written to be sung, the album itself is entirely instrumental, and combined with its super-smooth arrangements, it’s all a little too rich and sugary, and rather lacking in the emotional punch that the human voice can provide.~Peter Jones https://londonjazznews.com/2020/10/22/eddie-daniels-night-kisses-a-tribute-to-ivan-lins/

A fantastic funky album from flute man Dave Valentin done right after his time on the New York Latin underground, including some work with Ricardo Marrerro and in that lean, sharp sound of the early years of the GRP label! The vibe here is more CTI than the smoother later sound of the imprint and the arrangements have plenty of space for Dave's flute to soar out in Bobbi Humphrey-like solos amidst larger charts from Dave Grusin, Dennis Ball, and Valentin himself. Grusin also plays a fair bit of keyboards on the record, Marcus Miller plays bass, and one track features sweet guest vocals from Luther Vandross and Patti Austin. Titles include "Open Your Eyes", "Fantasy", "Astro March", "Land Of The Third Eye", and "Sidra's Dream". CD features a bonus 7" mix of "Sidra's Dream".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/863731/Dave-Valentin:Land-Of-The-Third-Eye-with-bonus-track

Kevin Eubanks' first album with a string section is a triumph of good taste, both in the guitarist's gently swinging work and in GRP chief Dave Grusin's unobtrusive, intelligent, unsentimental string charts. Grusin's gorgeously recorded strings seem to seep into the texture, filling the spaces with just enough mortar.

The backings alternate between an electric group with Marcus Miller on bass and Grusin applying the Yamaha DX7 electric piano sound and often just Ron Carter on acoustic bass (plus the strings, of course). The treatment of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" is a beaut, with a lot of rapid acoustic guitar figurework in mid-track. Even unreconstructed beboppers will enjoy the fluid duo-only exchange between Carter's 4/4 bass and Eubanks' electric guitar on Wes Montgomery's "The Trick Bag" and Bird's "Relaxin' at Camarillo," the latter of which Eubanks immodestly calls attention to in his liner notes. But he's entitled; it is impressive. ~ Richard S. Ginell https://www.allmusic.com/album/face-to-face-mw0000187982

Released in 1989, Collection sums up Diane Schuur's first five GRP albums, a period when she achieved a level of acclaim that tailed off somewhat in the '90s. What has been gathered together here is often very impressive, her rich, full voice keening over carefully wrought, beautifully recorded lush backdrops (with real or electronic strings), swinging over some fine big bands, or coming to terms with '80s jazz funksters. Strangely, there is only one selection from her live-in-the-studio collaboration Diane Schuur & the Count Basie Orchestra, which is the best overall album from this period (it features guitarist Freddie Green's last recorded performance) while the other albums (Deedles, Schuur Thing, Timeless, Talkin' 'Bout You) get multiple representation. It's quite possible that Schuur has never topped the leadoff track, Ivan Lins' beguiling "Love Dance" with her sponsor Stan Getz weaving a magic spell, this is a great example of the right material meeting the right singer and the right backing. Dave Grusin, Johnny Mandel, Billy May, Pat Williams, and Jeremy Lubbock are the arrangers whose tracks were chosen and everything has the brilliant sonic sheen that turned on the audiophile crowd early in the CD era. ~ Richard S.Ginell https://www.allmusic.com/album/collection-mw0000200577

On her 1984 debut album, vocalist/pianist Diane “Deedles” Schuur triumphs from the start (a fluid, assured vocal delivery on the standard “The Very Thought of You”) to the end (a duo version of “Amazing Grace” with her on piano and coproducer Dave Grusin on keyboards). Deedles is both traditional, with a 20-piece string section, and contemporary-sounding, with electric bass throughout. Schuur’s career-long penchant for tackling the contemporary songbook is established here with a pair of numbers from the '70s: Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” (one of two tracks to feature her mentor, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz) and Jackson Browne’s “Rock Me on the Water.” It’s definitely an album of its time, with Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer and occasional Simmons electronic drums. Released not long after Quincy Jones was operated upon for life-threatening brain aneurysms, the music community was glad to have this album around (you can almost sense Q's own relief as he holds his forehead on the cover). Basically, though, it continues the polished, percolating soul direction that Q initiated with Body Heat, alienating purists but entertaining R&B audiences that rushed to buy it. The album is given its commercial edge by two new Jones discoveries, George Johnson (guitar, vocals) and Louis Johnson (bass), who would leap to fame the following year on their own as the Brothers Johnson. One attraction for jazz listeners is Toots Thielemans' "Bluesette," in which the Belgian virtuoso does a nice guitar/whistle cameo and Frank Rosolino blows some fine trombone, but the track is not helped by the overdubbed soul voices. ~Richard S. Lee Ritenour - Friendship

(6:03)  5. Woody Creek
(6:21)  6. It's A Natural Thing

The third of three Lee Ritenour sets originally cut for Japanese JVC and in 1991 reissued domestically on CD matches the studio guitarist with what could be called the "Crossover All-Stars": Ernie Watts (on tenor and soprano), both Dave and Don Grusin on keyboards, electric bassist Abraham Laboriel, drummer Steve Gadd and percussionist Steve Forman. They perform pleasant but somewhat forgettable originals by Rit, Watts and both Grusins, the kind of lightly funky background music that one would expect from expert studio players.~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/friendship-mw0000093718

Personnel: Lee Ritenour (electric & acoustic guitars), Ernie Watts (soprano & tenor saxophones), Don Grusin (electric piano), Dave Grusin (electric & acoustic pianos), Abraham Laboriel (electric bass), Steve Gadd (drums), Steve Forman (percussion).

Lee Ritenour was born January 11, 1952 in Los Angeles, California. He played his first session when he was 16 with The Mamas & The Papas. Nicknamed "Captain Fingers," he (along with Larry Carlton) was a sought-after session guitarist by the mid-70s. He is noted for playing his red Gibson ES-335 and his Gibson L5 guitars. One of his most notable influences is the pioneering jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. In 1976, he released his first solo album, First Course. This was followed up by his famous fusion work Captain Fingers in 1976. Since First Course he has released over 30 albums - the 30th being Rit's House in 2002. One of his most notable works is his 1981 pop album Rit (featuring vocalist Eric Tagg), which contained the chart hits "Is It You," and "Mr. Briefcase." In the 90s, he was one of the founding members of smooth jazz group "Fourplay".

Throughout his career, Lee has not been afraid to experiment with different styles of music, often incorporating elements of funk, pop, rock, blues and Brazilian music with Jazz (much to the dislike of many critics). In the early 1980s, Lee was given his own Ibanez signature model guitar, the LR-10. The LR-10 was produced from 1981 to 1987. It can be heard exclusively on Rit. Currently, Lee plays the Gibsons that he first played in the 1970s (the ES-335 & L5), and now also plays his signature Lee Ritenour Model archtop guitar made by Gibson.

Personnel:  Lee Ritenour electric guitar, classical guitar, guitar synthesizer, associate producer, writer;  Dave Grusin keyboards, string arrangements, conductor, writer;  Dawilli Gongakeyboards;  Ian Underwood keyboards;  Patrice Rushen keyboards;  David Foster keyboards;  Dennis Budimir guitar;  Jay Graydon guitar;  Mitch Holder guitar, writer;  Ray Parker Jr. guitar;  Anthony Jackson bass;  Alphonso Johnson bass;  Bill Dickinson bass;  Charles Meeks bass;  Mike Porcaro bass;  Harvey Mason drums, percussion Jeff Porcaro drums;  Steve Forman percussion;  Victor Feldman congas;  Ernie Watts saxophone;  Bill Champlin vocals.

[4:50] 11. North-Tribal Step Dance

This set works very well. Dave Grusin and his younger brother Don Grusin use a variety of keyboards to create a series of colorful duets. Other than Dori Caymmi's "Southern Wind," all of the fairly spontaneous yet well-planned performances are originals by one or both of the brothers. Even listeners who are not that much into electronics will find much of interest on this melodic and funky, yet often unpredictable set. ~Scott Yanow

Dave Grusin - The Gershwin Connection

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s

[3:29] 12. Nice Work If You Can Get It
[5:47] 13. Medley Bess You Is My Woman I Loves You Porgy

Because many of Dave Grusin's albums have been rather commercial and overproduced, it is often forgotten how excellent a pianist he could be. This CD, which includes a 40-page booklet, features an enjoyable program of George and Ira Gershwin tunes played by a continually changing all-star lineup that includes the leader's piano, clarinetist Eddie Daniels, vibraphonist Gary Burton, altoist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter Sal Marquez, guitarist Lee Ritenour, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Dave Weckl and guest spots for pianist Chick Corea (who duets with Grusin on "'S Wonderful") and Don Grusin. A few of the numbers are given light funk rhythms and made to sound slightly "contemporary" (particularly "I've Got Plenty O' Nuthin'," which has an electric Ramsey Lewis-type groove), but overall, this is a very tasteful and respectful set -- a classy package. ~Scott Yanow

Jonathan Butler - Do You Love Me?

(5:26) 11. Lost to Love
(4:23) 12. My Only Joy

On Jonathan Butler's N2K Encoded Music debut, Do You Love Me, he continues his jack-of-two-trades approach, balancing R&B-based vocal tunes with easy, acoustic guitar-based instrumentals. While it's a friendly enough listen, Butler here doesn't display a powerful enough mastery of either format. His guttural, heartfelt vocal style reminiscent of Jon Secada can make even the most Lionel Richie-esque lyric seem deeper than it is (even a new song with a title like "The Way You Look Tonight"), but few of the adult-oriented vocal tunes here are as memorable or hooky as his best-known hit, "Sarah Sarah." "Do You Love Me?," for instance, should be a deep, emotional moment, but comes off as a pleasant, easily dismissed conversation. Fortunately, "You Don't Belong to Me" has more lyrical bite, nicely underscored with a percussive guitar line underneath his angry tone. Butler should put more of that pointed energy into his play-it-safe instrumentals, which generally gallop along smoothly without building much steam. The best one can do with this sort of album is like Butler a lot. ~ Jonathan Widran https://www.allmusic.com/album/do-you-love-me-mw0000595283

Glenn Miller Orchestra - In The Digital Mood

(3:13)  9. Pennsylvania 6-5000
(3:18) 10. Moonlight Serenade

This CD may be scoffed at by serious jazz listeners, and even by big-band devotees wary of modern "ghost band" performances, but the fact is that it sold over 100,000 pieces when it first appeared in 1983, and its CD version was among the very earliest compact discs ever released commercially in the United States (indeed, so early that the actual CDs had to be imported from Japan). The second-ever release by GRP Records, it put the label on the map, and it also stood as testimony to how good those original arrangements of the Glenn Miller Orchestra were. So how is it as music? At worst entertaining, and at best revealing, and also at times a little frustrating on the plus side, even heard in 2007, twenty-four years after the fact, the sound here is damned impressive; you can safely rank this release as one of the very earliest, if not the very first audiophile CDs to be released. The fact that it features 18 top-flight musicians under the baton of Larry O'Brien, then the leader of the touring Glenn Miller Orchestra, only makes it more impressive. What's more, with the quality of the playing, one will be able to make out minuscule elements of the original arrangements that were long obscured on the classic late-'30s/early-'40s Glenn Miller sides. Musicians with an appreciation of these arrangements will probably love this recording, and casual fans should embrace it heartily: these boys swing in 1983 about as well as their predecessors from 41 years earlier did. And the vocal numbers are no exception -- in contrast to Columbia Records' mid-'60s efforts to revive the Miller orchestra as a recording unit (which failed not just because of the timing of the project but also the uneven quality of the resulting albums), numbers like "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo" are as hot here as there were four decades before. And the singers include Mel Tormé and Julius LaRosa (doing a solo) in their ranks. Still, it's the instrumentals that make up the bulk of this album, and on that level it's similarly unimpeachable, at least most of the way through "Tuxedo Junction" (which includes Dave Grusin sitting in on piano) is so close to the original that it's easy to forget who you're listening to and when they put this track down; and serious listeners should probably hold out for the "Gold Disc" edition or the Japanese version of this CD, which contain a bonus track, "At Last," featuring a trombone solo by Urbie Green that is worth the price of the CD by itself. Now, all of that said, there are a couple of quibbles: the absence of the cowbell on "In the Mood," and the "clever" notion on "Pennsylvania 6-5000" of ending the number with well, you can guess. This is still one cool, swinging release and, with its virtuoso musicianship, offers many of the same appealing qualities as the original Miller recordings. ~ Bruce Eder http://www.allmusic.com/album/in-the-digital-mood-mw0000188430
