Pianist Burak Bedikyan's sixth release on Steeplechase, the absorbing Introspection, took shape around a short, commissioned piece. The organizers of Turkey's oldest jazz festival, the Akbank, asked for the composition for its thirtieth anniversary in 2021. As Bedikyan started work on this, he improvised extensively on his home piano and recorded these experiments. The result is moving and contemplative music which is melancholic yet hopeful, simultaneously ethereal and earthy.

The angular "Call for Peace" opens with sparse chimes and a hymn-like mood. It is easy to imagine these resonant chords echoing inside a church. The crystalline melody that coalesces out of these bursts of notes and cascading lines retains the original spirituality yet transcends specific religious roots. Similarly, the sober "Deluded" has a meditative ambience yet one with an undercurrent of an insistence due to its driving cadence. The gradual build-up of tempo transforms the wistful tune into a simmering, passionate one while maintaining the eastern motif at its core. The percussive conclusion expresses a mix of ire and confidence.

"Free Your Mind," in contrast, has more buoyancy and joy. Its theme has bluesy undertones and Bedikyan's breathtaking virtuosity gives it a boppish thrill. The densely woven phrases brim with clever twists and inventive ideas. The lithe and elegant performance is vibrant, with a polished spontaneity which retains a slight gritty edge. "Finale," the aptly named album closer, is a lyrical, otherworldly lullaby laced with mysticism and enveloped in an expectant atmosphere. The meandering extemporization flows effortlessly and with grace, and forms a forlorn yet brightly-hued piece.

Although the impetus for Introspection was the aforementioned celebration in his native Istanbul, Bedikyan put in this, very personal, recording his experience during Covid19. This life-altering world event and its impact on Bedikyan's life resulted in these sublime and reflective tracks. The brilliance of Bedikyan's artistry and its maturity make this music speak to anyone, regardless of the type of encounter with and even beyond the pandemic.

Burak Bedikyan - Istanbul Junction

(5:06)  7. Innerview (for Ayse)
(7:15)  8. L'ombre Lumineuse (Dedicated to Olivier Messiaen)
(5:19)  9. Postlude

Istanbul-born and New York-based pianist Burak Bedikyan is an inventive composer and intelligent improviser with a subtle touch. His fifth release, the intimate and cinematic Istanbul Junction, showcases his talents fully as he leads a new band through nine of his captivating originals.  The album's overall ambience is dramatic and darkly-hued, and the various tracks expand within it with vibrant poetry. The main theme of "Moods," for example, consists of expectant and simmering refrains. These progress into an intriguing and serpentine melody out of which emerge Bedikyan's dense chords, forming an elegant and crystalline improvisation. Hungarian saxophonist Gabor Bolla contributes a warm, sinewy solo which is yearning and emotive, and fades seamlessly into the closing head. Middle Eastern influences delightfully color some of the music, like the tender and wistful "Toprak"; it starts with Bedikyan's resonant and sparse notes which the band's undulating refrains follow. Over Turkish drummer Can Kozlu's rustling lithe beats and American bassist Matthew Hall's reverberating thumps Bedikyan's extemporization expands with simmering lines. Bolla's eloquent and bittersweet tenor mirrors Bedkyan in spontaneity and lyricism.

Equally engrossing is the charmingly angular "Innerview (For Ayse)" which finds Bedikyan, unaccompanied, flirting with dissonance. The tune itself is deeply introspective and passionate with overlapping chords and breathtaking cascades which demonstrate Bedikyan's virtuosity on the keys. Bedikyan pays homage to one of his idols, the ingenious 20th century composer Olivier Messiaen, on the moving and mellifluous "L'ombre Lumineuse." The piece eschews overtly Western Classical phraseology and is more akin to a jazz ballad. Kozlu's sparkling percussion and Hall's agile lines form a restless and supportive rhythmic framework. Bedikyan infuses his pianism with a bittersweet melancholy while Bolla builds an intricate extemporization with graceful facility and raw emotion. The ensemble concludes with a sublimely synergistic performance. Istanbul Junction is a cohesive work, and a high point of Bedikyan's superb career. As Kozlu points out in the liner notes, Bedikyan has singularly fused various traditions into a personal artistic statement. The record is, perhaps, his most mature and unique to date. ~ Hrayr Attarian https://www.allaboutjazz.com/istanbul-junction-burak-bedikyan-steeplechase-lookout

(9:56)  8. Do Not Fear
(6:11)  9. The All Seeing Eye

On his third release as a leader, Istanbul based pianist, Burak Bedikyan seamlessly blends his dual education in western classical and jazz and his national/ethnic heritage into an intriguing and cohesive album. Awakening comprises of nine Bedikyan originals that are elegantly crafted balancing intricate harmonies with deceptively effortless fluidity. The gently rolling refrains on the lilting ballad "Mother Earth," for instance, have a warm, Near Eastern lyricism. Saxophonist Loren Stillman embellishes the melancholic theme with yearning spontaneous phrases filled with passion. Bedikyan fashions his expressive solo with series of resonant notes that ring with wistful poetry. Stillman and Bedikyan trade contemplative and dynamic lines on the dramatic "Do Not Fear." Over Bedikyan's shimmering keys, Bassist Ugonna Okegwo plays a lithe and darkly hued soliloquy with a mystical edge. Stillman's exquisitely tender and emotive improvisation ushers in the piece's conclusion. At times the disc also crackles with visceral energy and breathtaking instrumental acrobatics. On the hard bop-ish "Idée Fixe," Bedikyan lets loose a cascade of dense chords with delightful agility. His arpeggio filled performance ebbs and flows with crystalline lucidity and a vibrant, organic sound. Stillman's vibrato filled muscular alto meanders with nimble dexterity around the band's percolating vamps. Drummer Donald Edwards's thunderous beats and exuberant polyrhythms bring the music back to the gripping head. Stillman opens the expansive "Unfair Blues" with fiery lines and a soulful swagger. Bedikyan weaves an eloquent and earthy melody together with Edwards' thumping kit and Okegwo's reverberating strings. The four men exhibit captivating camaraderie in a stimulating conversation that is one of the tune's highlights.  With Awakening Bedikyan, as a composer and a musician, has achieved his personal best to date. The motifs he utilized in previous recordings, his intelligent inventiveness and charming virtuosity have all coalesced into a superb and mature work. If he stays the course Bedikyan is certainly assured a bright future and a promising career. ~ HRAYR ATTARIAN https://www.allaboutjazz.com/awakening-burak-bedikyan-steeplechase-lookout-review-by-hrayr-attarian.php

A record that bursts with life and energy right from the very first note  thanks to a wealth of original compositions from pianist Burak Bedikyan  an artist who's slowly been building up a great legacy of music on the Steeplechase label over the past few years! Bedikyan works here in a trio with strong Steeplechase rhythm work from Jay Anderson on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums  to very fluid, compatible players who definitely find the right sort of spirit for Burak's music which partly involves dropping back at all the right points  as Bedikyan's always able to explore space very openly on his own. There's a nice sense of freedom in the music, but never in an avant way  as the tunes always glisten with lots of lyrical colors  on titles that include "No Complaints", "Ayca", "Leo", "Rue Dauphin", "Blues Me Up", "Magic Carpet", "Things We Are", and "Epilogue".  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/900097/Burak-Bedikyan:New-Beginning
