"Katrine Madsen is a true Danish Queen of Jazz. The nearest we get to a Shirley Horn in this part of the world...she reaches new heights with her dark toned, sensual and wide ranged alto voice. She has an expressive depth in her voice which is an inborn communicative gift seldom to be heard." JazzSpecial (Danish Jazz Magazine)

"The simpler, the better. Jazz does not have to be long, complicated solos. When jazz is at its best it presents itself as a brilliant banality. Naked music with a soul. Katrine Madsen knows the art of turning jazz into something which everyone can relate to. No academic prerequisites are needed. Everything seems straight forward and so easy. When Katrine Madsen sings we do not ask for anything else. Everything is said and every word is heard. When she sings we listen with our breath drawn in order not to disturb." BT (Danish National newspaper)

"Katrine Madsen sings with a down played and at the same time glowing expression and she writes songs which effortlessly mingle with well recognized works." Berlingske Tidende (Danish National Newpaper)

"She is exciting not only as a singer, but also as a composer and she demonstrates both talents brilliantly. Here her bluish voice vibrates with an anxious sweetness and an exhausted melancholy. Both deeply felt and teasing, with an eye for choosing the direction which others wouldn’t – and that is meant as a big compliment. There’s an unexpected maturity in her voice, daring phrasing and an almost understated reserve of energy." Winter Sun is a pure solo project in which Katrine Madsen accompanies herself on the grand piano, and this is the first time the singer with the warm and hearty voice chooses to provide both vocals and music. On her previous albums Katrine Madsen has always performed with orchestras of varying size and composition. With 'Winter Sun', she takes a step away from this setup and places herself in the group of jazz vocalists who, through time, have accompanied themselves. And on the record you can find inspiration from singers such as Shirley Horn and Ernestine Anderson, while Katrine Madsen's compositions lead listeners' thoughts on musicians such as Toots Thielemans and Bill Evans. The repertoire of 'Winter Sun', recorded in 'The Village Recording', is a mix of American song tax classics and compositions. Vocal duos are not common in jazz, however there are several great examples: Ella Fiztgerald and Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan and Joe Williams, Carmen McRay and Samy Davis - and of course Ray Charles and Betty Carter, with whom Danish Katrine Madsen and Swedish Svante Thuresson have been compared.  Two kindred spirits, although a generation apart, Katrine and Svante are on the same musical wavelength. They have done quite a lot of touring together - especially in Sweden, where the critics called them “two world-class artists”, and enthusiastic public demand has made their performances a recurring event. Katrine Madsen is one of Denmark’s top female vocalists. Svante Thuresson is perhaps the very best jazz singer in Sweden. He started out on drums, performing with many of Sweden’s top bands. Later he joined the vocal group Gals & Pals. He has been a cherished entertainer for years.

So, here for your complete enjoyment, are two jazz vocalist involved in musical interplay.... fascinating, charming and full sweetness - this is a real ‘feel good’ recording. This Danish/Swedish duo has a good time on stage and they had a good time in the studio. The mood is catchy, so you may as well join the party now. http://www.sundance.dk/docs/pressrel/64-39.pdf

Katrine Madsen's Danish jazz singer and has taken his graduation from the Academy of Music. She formed in 1994 his own group Swing Quintet and debuted in 1996 with the album after 'I'm Old Fashioned'. It was followed by 'Dream Dancing' from 1997. She also starred in Ed Thigpen Rhythm Features, has toured with Lars Moller on saxophone, Jan Lund Green on piano, Jesper Bodilsen on bass and Morten Lund on drums in different contexts.  In spring 2000, Danes could see her roll over the TV series The spider as nightclub singer, in which she also starred on the soundtrack. That same year published 'My Secret'. "World class" and "one of the best jazz singers in Scandinavia" was the newspaper bid for a review of Katrine Madsen.

To accompany her on her tour in the 'My Secret' selected Katrine Madsen guitarist Jacob Fischer and bassist and Consort Jesper Bodilsen. Katrine has repeatedly moved across the sound to find partners. On the release of 'Magic Night' from 2001, she teamed up with the Stockholm orchestra Bohuslän Big Band, which also led to a tour around many of Scandinavia venues. She has also sung with Claes Crona Trio and Svante Thuresson. With her ??sixth plate 'Close to You' was turned down for the big bigbandlyd in favor of a more intimate musical space. The sheet total again Madsen's usual rhythm section with Jesper Bodilsen and Morten Lund. This time they were supplemented by Bodilsens and Lund's regular trio partner pianist Stefano Bollani and saxophonist Hans Ulrik and the Swedish trumpeter Mårten Lundgren. Here binds Madsen an old standards as Ellington's 'In a sentimental mood', Burt Bacharach's 'Close to You' and Lennon / McCartney 'And I love here'.

The album was nominated for a "Danish Music Awards Jazz" as the year's vocal release 2005. On release, 'Box of Pearls' from 2005, Katrine Madsen again teamed up with Claes Crona Trio and Svante Thuresson to a collection of vocal duets. This album is a studio album and was nominated as the year vocal release for "Danish Music Awards Jazz" 2006.  Translate by google  http://www.kingsizebigband.dk/Koncerter/Katrine-Madsen.html

Katrine Madsen - Close To You

Bitrate: 320K/s

[5:28] 8. The Very Thought Of You
[8:21] 9. Be Still My Heart
[5:12] 10. Once Upon A Summertime
[4:37] 11. Go Now

Just reading the track list will likely make the more cynical jazz fan cringe and moan inwardly. Aside from a trio of originals, the set list of Close to You consists of overly familiar ballad standards ranging from Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" to the Beatles' "And I Love Her" and Burt Bacharach's legendarily sappy title track. Never fear, however: this is not an album of boring supper-club faux jazz. Fond though Katrine Madsen is of sentimental ballads like "The Very Thought of You," she's fearless about messing with the familiar and well-loved melodies: her rhythmically varied take on "The Look of Love" won't lead anyone to compare her to Patty Waters, but she'd likely get heckled by some drunk in the audience at the Cocoanut Grove, probably with that old standby "Hey, if you get near a tune, sing it!" Madsen's backing, a simple piano trio, stays unobtrusively in the background throughout, providing elegant but somewhat anonymous backing while leaving the focus entirely on her rich and appealing voice. ~Stewart Mason

She has also sung with Claes Crona Trio and Svante Thuresson. About Katrine Madsen wrote Dagbladet Information in April 2003: She has style, [...]. No doubt about it. A singer since the mid-90s preferably have felt called into the classic American jazz tradition with romantic ballads as a specialty. In suited her dark, airy voice and gentle, easy-going style itself, reminiscent in the direction of Shirley Horn, Ruth Cameron and Anita O'Day. And as the great jazz vocal tradition offers, she has arrogated a fragile vibrato that makes her sound older and more old lady-like; an effete quality [...]. The debut album of 1996 was also a manifesto titled I'm Old Fashioned.

At the sixth album Close to You was turned down for the big bigbandlyd in favor of a more intimate musical space. Katrine Madsen is a shining vocal star on the Scandinavian jazz heaven. Her voice is dark and intense and her recordings have been praised unanimously by jazz critics everywhere.

She has toured extensively throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and Japan. Katrine has released 12 albums, 2 of them has been nominated for a Danish Music Award as “Best Vocal Jazz Album”.

From the very start of her career, Katrine Madsen has revealed a well-developed sense of style and an inherent ability to capture the musical space and lead the listener into her vocal stories. Often in intimate love ballads and pensive songs, where we find some of the key words in life.

“Many women are called to jazz singing, few are chosen. Danish singer Katrine Madsen is one of the chosen few with a voice like dark wine and an unerring instinct for the perfect note at the right moment. No tricks. No showy pyrotechnics!” (The Courier-Mail - Brisbane)

“Katrine Madsen is truly a superb interpreter of jazz. The true measure of her talent is in her interpretation of a song…this lady of song is totally in control of her material. Katrine Madsen is style. Style is the necessary adjunct of talent and genius, a heaven-bestowed capacity for projecting a very personal, a very original image."
