Lundgren, born in Kristianstad in southern Sweden on March 22nd 1966, and raised in Ronneby, Blekinge, had his first piano lessons at age five. He was soon discovered to have an exceptional musical talent. After a long period of classical training, he discovered jazz more or less by chance in the late 1980’s. He was instantly hooked, rapidly absorbed the jazz piano tradition from Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner to Bud Powell and Bill Evans, and acquired a depth of knowledge of the Great American Songbook like possibly no other European jazz pianist.

While sailing through his studies at the renowned Royal College of Music in Malmö, he also took up a busy schedule as a professional musician that quickly helped to build his reputation in Sweden. Discovered by Swedish bebop legend Arne Domnérus, he frequently played with other Swedish stars like Putte Wickman and Bernt Rosengren.

Lundgren’s debut album “Conclusion” was released in 1994, and propelled his career firmly forward. The following year saw the formation of the Jan Lundgren Trio with long time student associates Mattias Svensson (bass) and Rasmus Kihlberg (drums), who was replaced in the beginning of the year 2000 by the Dane Morten Lund. This steady band recorded seven well-received and commercially very successful albums for the Swedish label “Sittel” in the period up to 2003.

The album “Swedish Standards”, released in 1997 even became a bestseller and reached a place in the Swedish pop charts. But the album “Landscapes” (2003) sold comparably and both releases soon became classics due to their linking Swedish folk music and jazz. The band’s intense tour schedule founds a temporary peak in a concert at Carnegie Hall as part of “Swedish Jazz salutes the USA”.

As a sideman, Lundgren has accompanied such greats as Johnny Griffin, Benny Golson, Herb Geller, James Moody, or singer Stacey Kent. He has also shared the stage with ACT-artist Ulf Wakenius a number of times.

Jan Lundgren has been awarded a number of prizes since the early 90’s: In 1997 “Swedish Standards” became “best jazz album of the year”. He was nominated for the “Swedish Grammy” in 1995, 1997 and 2008 and the “Swedish Django d’Or Prize” in 1998, 2001 and 2002.

Having visited a long list of European territories and venues, Lundgren has also been on extended tours of Australia and Japan. He has visited the USA about 15 times and recorded some well-received albums for the label “Fresh Sound”.

Bernt Rosengren - Live At Jazzcup

( 9:09) 3. Body & Soul

( 8:34) 6. Jazzcup Blues

Since the Jazzkæelderen struck again, Jazzcup is Copenhagen's best jazz shop, but also a good venue. During the season, regular concerts are given there on Saturday afternoons. At one of these, last December, Bernt Rosengren performed accompanied by pianist Ole Kock Hansen, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Niclas Campagnol.

The concert is now available on disc. Lundgaard has produced, and he reserves himself against shortcomings in the sound quality. But as he also says: many of jazz's best records were recorded under simple conditions.

The group plays five standards (Autumn leaves, Body & soul and Lover man among others) and a blues. The atmosphere is laid-back, Bernt Rosengren plays relaxed and with the choice-free immediacy that half a century of first-class musicianship provides. The rhythm section is compliant, and Ole Kock Hansen excels with seemingly simple means. Everything becomes obvious, but the music is also unceasingly vital. And more probably doesn't need to be said.https://www-lira-se.translate.goog/skivrecension/live-at-jazzcup/

He has visited the USA about 15 times and recorded some well-received albums for the label “Fresh Sound”. In 2006 Lundgren becomes part of the ACT family: Initially he was featured as a sideman on the Ida Sand album Meet Me Around Midnight (ACT 9716-2). In July 2007 he released his first ACT album Fresu – Galliano – Lundgren: Mare Nostrum (ACT 9466-2), followed by Magnum Mysterium (ACT 9457-2), which will be released in November of 2007.

In 2008 Lundgren could reap the fruits of his labour, and his Mare Nostrum was performed in front of sold out houses on prestigious stages throughout Europe (Salle Gaveau – Paris, Tonhalle – Zurich, Victoria Hall – Geneva, Teatro Dante Aligheri – Ravenna, S. Caecilia – Rome …) as well as at Jazz Baltica, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Istanbul Jazz Festival. There are many good reasons why the band has been called “the first European super group”.

In the same year Lundgren was honoured with the Swedish Django d’Or, and began a collaboration with the classical trumpet player H?kan Hardenberger and the Swedish writer Jacques Werup an exiting melange of modern classical and free music, of jazz and compositions of Jan Lundgren.

Lundgren also brought the Jan Lundgren 3io back to life in 2008, albeit with a new drummer, Zoltan Csörsz Jr who proved to be a truly lucky catch for the trio. A new repertoire has resulted in the new ACT album European Standards (ACT 9482-2) which will be released in Mai 2009 together with the re-release of Swedish Standards (ACT 9022-2) from the ACT Jazz Classics series.

Lundgren is part of a remarkable and long tradition of innovative pianists from Sweden like Jan Johansson who passed away early, and in more recent times Bobo Stenson and Esbjörn Svensson. Lundgren has never made life easy for himself, and has always tried to utilize his phenomenal technique to enhance his musicality. His ability to integrate the most disparate musical influences into a fascinating whole is unique in itself. Whether its contemporary classical music, the inexhaustible northern folk tradition or the pulsating groove of jazz, deeply rooted in Afro-American music: Lundgren has a unique way of leading the listener on a voyage of discovery sometimes relaxed, sometimes utterly invigorating through his highly individual soundscapes.

This LP was originally released in the summer of 1989 with Doug Raney at age 33. He released during his rather short life (1956 - 2016) 17 leader albums for SteepleChase including this 13th piano-less horn-featured recording which won accolades from critics all over the world. https://www.prestomusic.com/jazz/products/9246173--the-doug-raney-quintet

"Doug Raney is an elegant player even when he's attacking, as he does here on most of the content...Certainly recommended if you enjoy your jazz slightly in advance of bebop, but with all of that basic feel still there." ~ Martin Richards, Jazz Journal International

"No doubt, another in the string of successful Raney releases."~ Paul B. Matthews, Cadence

Kirk Lightsey has long been an underrated modern mainstream pianist. He has a fine workout on this trio set with bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Eddie Gladden from 1983. Of the six selections, Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and Joe Henderson's "Isotope" are best known, but the other four tunes (by Johnny Griffin, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and the obscure Rudolph Johnson) are rarely performed. The strong interplay between the musicians and the interesting material uplift the set above the average trio date.

Expatriate pianist Horace Parlan and a couple of fine Scandinavians (bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Aage Tanggaard) welcome Thad Jones (heard exclusively here on flugelhorn) and the great tenor Eddie Harris to this spirited set. Jones was making a successful, if short-lived comeback, and at two years before his death, this was one of his final high-quality small-group recordings. Harris is heard throughout in top form. The quintet performs two Parlan originals (including "Something for Silver"), a couple of obscurities, John Lewis' "Afternoon In Paris" and Bud Powell's "Oblivion." Parlan sounds inspired by the other musicians on this spirited hard bop set. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/glad-i-found-you-mw0000196134

A pair of major Swedish veterans (clarinetist Putte Wickman and altoist Arne Domnerus) join forces with the talented young pianist Jan Lundgren, guitarist Rune Gustafsson, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Aage Tanggaard to perform two CDs full of straight-ahead music. Although Wickman and Domnerus (who switches to clarinet on "Barney Goin' Easy") sound fine during these live performances (which have announcements in Swedish), the emphasis is generally on slower tempos, and the interpretations are not as fiery or competitive as one might hope. Pleasing but not essential music, with some of the brighter moments occurring on "Fine and Dandy," "Moanin'," "Broadway" and "Move." ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/happy-together%21-mw0001004133

Thad Jones was 61 at the time of this recording and had made a full-fledged recovery after some health problems, although he was only two years away from his death. He is showcased on cornet throughout the quartet date with pianist Ole Hansen, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Ed Thigpen, and is heard in very good form. Jones plays two of his originals, Ahmad Jamal's "Night Mist Blues," "My Romance," "My One and Only Love" and "But Not for Me." This date is reminiscent in ways of Jones' Debut session from 29 years earlier, which also found him taking harmonically sophisticated solos in a quartet. Starting in 1977 and continuing into the mid-1980s, guitarist Doug Raney's career was extensively documented by the SteepleChase label. Influenced by his father Doug Raney, Tal Farlow, and Jim Hall, Raney pretty much had his style together from the start, so his evolution since the beginning is pretty logical. This quintet outing matches Raney with a European quintet whose best-known members are tenor saxophonist Bernt Rosengren and bassist Jesper Lundgaard. Raney performs two originals (including "Walking the Duck"), "Theme for Ernie" and numbers by Benny Golson, John Coltrane and Sam Rivers ("Beatrice"). Recorded live at the Cafe Montmartre in Copenhagen in 1985, this is the second in a series of posthumously released Chet Baker concerts on Enja Records. Performing with a quartet, Baker nails another electrifying concert appearance. With the set's lengthy opening tune "But Not For Me," Baker establishes the musical tone for the rest of the evening an amazing blend of solid rhythm against Baker's free sense of space and lyricism. Baker sings in his trademark style of scattered, whispery phrases and he even plays some piano in a single-note style that reflects his approach to trumpeting. His mature trumpet work is clear, emotionally charged, natural, and personal, and his lines are often unpredictable. The set also includes a haunting and strangely sad "You Go To My Head," which features Baker's hushed, seductive vocals. This recording was never intended for commercial release, so the sound quality is not perfect and there is some audience noise, but it never gets in the way of enjoying this wonderful evening of Chet Baker at the top of his form. https://www.allmusic.com/album/i-remember-you-the-legacy-vol-2-mw0000592803

Everything We Love is a live album (LP) by Norwegian guitarist Thorgeir Stubø and American guitarist Doug Raney released 1984 in Oslo, Norway by Hot Club Records – HCR 19). This is the third album by Thorgeir Stubø released in 1984, and presents an interaction with the famous American guitarist Doug Raney, son of the legendary pioneer bopgitar, Jimmy Raney. Raney was at this time living in Denmark, and on this album Stubø made Doug Raney bring along the Danish top bassist Jesper Lungaard and drummer Ole Jacob Hansen. It was an elegant and perhaps more easily swinging quartet than the previous quintet from Jazz Alive. This time the repertoire also was a bit more conservative with the older standard songs and bop tunes like "Everything I Love" (Porter), "Half Nelson" (Miles Davis), "Love Letters" (Young), "Get out of town" (Porter) Just Friends (Klenner/Lewis), "We'll be together again" (Fisher/Lane) and "So do it" (Montgomery). The two guitarists clearly shows that they have some of the same influences, and they are relatively similar in style. Anyway, it's inequities and Stubø is rougher and a bit more angular in the performance than Raney's slightly smoother style. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everything_We_Love

A most agreeable set that is both eminently listenable and very enterprising. …Jordan was always a fleetly swinging but subtle pianist whose all-round musicianship has never got the recognition it merits. This fine trio deserves to sell well and spared his name further afield . ~Richard Palmer

In 2006 Lundgren becomes part of the ACT family: Initially he was featured as a sideman on the Ida Sand album Meet Me Around Midnight. In July 2007 he released his first ACT album Fresu – Galliano – Lundgren: Mare Nostrum followed by Magnum Mysterium (ACT 9457-2), which will be released in November of 2007.

A new repertoire has resulted in the new ACT album European Standards  which will be released in Mai 2009 together with the re-release of Swedish Standards from the ACT Jazz Classics series. Whether its contemporary classical music, the inexhaustible northern folk tradition or the pulsating groove of jazz, deeply rooted in Afro-American music: Lundgren has a unique way of leading the listener on a voyage of discovery – sometimes relaxed, sometimes utterly invigorating - through his highly individual soundscapes. http://www.janlundgren.com/bio

Horace Parlan - My Little Brown Book

(10:03)  8. Lotus Blossom

Pianist Horace Parlan is literally at home during the three sessions which make up My Little Brown Book. Joined by bassist Jesper Lundgaard (a frequent collaborator) and alto saxophonist Christina von Bülow, he is in great form throughout these intimate performances, consisting of originals, standards and jazz compositions by other greats. His jubilant "Little Esther" and saucy blues "Party Time" feature Lundgaard's walking bass with von Bülow taking center stage with her mellow solos while Parlan playfully detours into a Monk-like dissonance on the latter piece. The leader sounds very relaxed playing old favorites like the bittersweet standard "Everything Happens to Me" and Billy Strayhorn's lush "Lotus Blossom." His loping treatment of "Fran Dance" revives a gem from the '50s that has only been sporadically played since it was recorded by Miles Davis. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden http://www.allmusic.com/album/my-little-brown-book-mw0000488757

(7:02) 13. Fanfare

A February 1985 recording in a Copenhagen studio, Questions finds Canadian free jazz pianist Paul Bley paired with the Danish rhythm section of bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Aage Tangaard. For a one-off recording session assumedly recorded with a minimum of rehearsal, the three mesh quite well, although the interplay between Bley and Lundgaard in the middle section of the opening "Lovely" probably was not meant to sound as hesitant and atonal as it does. Wisely, the album then moves into a series of solos by Bley, "Adventure" parts one through four. Melodic but abstract, with long pauses and unexpected glissandi, these solos sound almost like Bill Evans might have after heavy exposure to Brian Eno. The rhythm section comes back in for the gently swinging "Beautiful," then lays out again for another pair of Bley solos. Returning for the first three sections of the four-part "Here and Gone," Lundgaard and Tangaard seem perfectly attuned with Bley's fragmented, impressionistic style. (Part two of this composition has nearly as much silence as it does music.) The rhythm section's restrained, subtle support on these tracks is a perfect setting for Bley, who moves even further into quasi-ambient soloing on the seven-minute closer, "Fanfare." The more normal sounding trio recordings towards the front of the disc sound almost out of place, but the rest of Questions is Bley at his tranquil but never placid best. ~ Stewart Mason http://www.allmusic.com/album/questions-mw0000192601
