In these times, it is not easy to find anything that permits us to foresee with clarity the direction in which jazz is evolving. . For this reason, let us forget for a moment questions such as “should art advance or not ?”. This could be an option that would allow us to enjoy music in all of its splendor.

In this context it is very comforting to run into recordings like “Nothing Like a Ballad” by Gypsy saxophonist Tony Lakatos, whose proposal would draw as much interest three decades ago as in the remote future. However, since we are asking these questions, one would ask what is the necessity of recording a handful of ballads that have already been recorded and are amongst the favorites of any serious jazz fan. I don’t think that there is any answer to this question and perhaps it’s probably not even worth trying to find one. After listening to “Nothing Like a Ballad”, I would prefer to write about the enormous beauty of this recording.

Situated in a very comfortable space-time frame, Lakatos proposes his conception of ten ballads such as the mysterious “What’s New”, the atmospheric “Chelsea Bridge” , or to mention one more , his version of “Infant Eyes” which in my judgement would serve to fully defend the meaning and the function of the ballad in all of its power of expression and emotion in the heart of afro-american music.

Accompanied by an excellent rythmn section that have been playing together for many years in different projects, the saxophonist revindicates such essential values in jazz music as are individuality and leadership. His warm and profound sound flows with the tightly knitted accompaniment provided by the pianist Fabio Miano, the bassist Ignasi Gonzalez and the drummer Jo Krause.

My opinion is that “Nothing Like a Ballad” is one of those necessary records, not only to emphasize the importance of the ballad as a classical and timeless art form, but also to allow us to become travelers , taking us on beautiful journeys which will inevitably affect our emotions. On "The Coltrane Hartman Fantasy" baritone vocalist Kevin Mahogany and tenor saxophonist Tony Lakatos let the spirit of the jazz ballad classic come alive, that John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman recorded in 1962. Mahogany and Lakatos bring a cosmos of compositions to life, which probably would have been recorded if Coltrane and Hartman would have continued with another album . On tracks like "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "If I'm Lucky" or "My Little Brown Book" Mahogany and Lakatos are communicating in a way, which is nothing less than timeless and beautiful. They are supported by Cologne based pianist Thomas Rückert and bassist Henning Gailing and top-drummer Martijn Vink from Amsterdam.

Tony Lakatos is undoubtedly the shining light of the saxophone in the German jazz scene. Like very few German jazz musicians before him, he has gained worldwide recognition and is constantly on the road in concerts to keep the legacy of jazz history alive, including current trends, so he has recently been seen a lot as an outstanding soloist of the ensemble Web Web with Max Herre. Beyond all genres and pigeonholes, he has found his very own, suspended saxophone tone, both on the tenor and soprano saxophone.

In 2021 he was awarded the Hessian Jazz Prize and now he has used the prize money to put together an international top cast in Berlin, with which he pays tribute to his idols. In addition to Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and flugelhorn, he is accompanied by Hans Glawischnigg on drums, Gregory Hutchinson on drums and the famous Danny Grisett on piano and Fender Rhodes.

Nine original compositions impressively demonstrate the mastery of the Frankfurter, who originally came from a Hungarian musical dynasty. With titles such as "Zoots Suits", "Eugen Choose The Shorter Way" or "Mingus Diggs", the connoisseur will know which idols Lakatos recalls. Tony Lakatos, the great Hungarian jazz saxophone player was born on 13th November, 1958 in Budapest. His father was a fantastic Hungarian musician, a violinist. His brother, Roby Lakatos is a great violinist living in Brussels.

As for a start, Tony, then Tónika /Antal/ started learning to play the violin, as it was traditional in his family. To my knowledge, their family is one of the most outstanding gypsy musician families of Hungary, his ancestors can be traced back as belonging to the best violinist family, the Bihari family./I'm not quite sure of the name, though./ The little Tony got to like the saxophone, but his parents didn't approve of him changing his musical instrument.

At last, he still started playing, and he appeared at one of Hungary's jazz festivals at the age of 17 as a great talent and surprise for everyone. Eversince then he has played with all the most renowned Hungarian musicians like Szakcsi Lakatos Béla /piano/,Dresch Mihály /saxophone/,Pecek Lakatos Géza /drums/,Balázs Elemér /drums/,Lattmann Béla /bass guitar/ and numerous others.

He moved to Germany in 1985 /or so/ and has been living there since then, in Stuttgart. He has played with numerous American, German and European jazz musicians. He has had concerts all around Europe,USA and even in Japan. Tony Lakatos returns to Hungary quite often, so we are lucky to be able to listen to his inventive music. He does not only play jazz standards but also a great composer in his own right. Tony is married with two daughters, a good hearted, very nice person.
