The Best Of The '80s: The Millennium Collection attempts to capture the musical trends of the decade in a dozen songs, including the Fixx's "One Thing Leads to Another," the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," and Steve Winwood's "Higher Love." Blondie's "Call Me," the Eurhythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," and Soft Cell's "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" are some of the album's other highlights. By concentrating on new wave and pop hits rather than trying to document every sound of the '80s, The Best of the '80s may not quite live up to its name, but it does present a fairly cohesive and entertaining mix of some of the decade's catchiest singles. ~ Heather Phares

Don't Explain isn't the smashing success of palmer mid-'80s music, either his own Riptide album or his work with members of Duran Duran in the group Power Station. Still, the record did enjoy some commercial success thanks to a Top 20 medley of Marvin Gaye's Mercy Mercy Me / I Want You, songs he was initially intimidated to perform. Though the Gaye medley has been the album's sole hit, Palmer said he hasn't given up on Don't Explain.

"You make these albums and keep your fingers crossed that some one song is going to bring the record to the public's attention," Palmer says. "You're making something that's designed to communicate. If it sells, ther's some indication that you are. If it doesn't, then you do feel a bit like you've failed." ~Gary Graff

Robert Palmer - Best Of Both Worlds: The Robert Palmer Anthology 1974-2001 (2-Disc Set)

There are usually thought to be two phases to Robert Palmer's career: an earlier one running from 1974 to 1983, when he explored New Orleans second-line funk and reggae, backed by members of Little Feat and the Meters and turned out a series of critically acclaimed, modestly successful recordings, and a later one, from 1985 on, when he rode his good looks, some high-fashion videos, and some simplistic hard rock/pop to a series of big hits on his own and with the Power Station. This two-CD set responds to that view by devoting its first disc to the earlier phase and its second disc to the later one. Palmer switched record companies along the way, too, but Hip-O is known for its willingness to license material from other labels, and 15 of the 20 tracks on the second disc come from outside the Universal archives. Along the way, all of the singer's U.S. Top 40 hits are included, though the collection was assembled with Palmer's input, which leads to alterations from the original recordings that fans might not be entirely pleased with. For a couple of earlier compilations, Addictions, Vols. 1 and 2, he used remixes of many of his well-known recordings, and those remixes have been retained here. He has also chosen to present three favorites -- "Johnny and Mary," "Riptide," and "Looking for Clues" -- as 2001 live performances rather than in their original studio recordings. Still, the selection is well-considered. The first disc is a good summation of Palmer's first eight Island albums, and the second disc demonstrates that not all of the second half of his career sounded like "Addicted to Love," that, actually, it was far more varied than the first half. There have been several Palmer compilations, but this one is the most comprehensive yet assembled. ~William Ruhlmann

This budget priced collection is a good place to start with Robert Palmer. Universal's various Millennium collections are geared toward the consumer curious about an artists' music, but who don't want to venture in to their non-hits catalog. At 38 minutes this could have been a couple of songs longer. I miss "Simply Irresistable", "Johnny and Mary" and "Some Like It Hot". But the 10 tracks chosen are fine. Decent liner notes and excellent sound make this a fine way to check out Palmer's varied sounds: Rock, Pop, New Wave and R&B, he tried it all. ~T. C Lane

Island's 2005 compilation The Very Best of the Island Years is a near-perfect single-disc overview of Robert Palmer's stint at Island Records, which ran from 1974's Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley to 1985's Riptide. This is regarded by fans and critics alike as his peak creative period, and it also contained his best-known hits, including 1978's "Every Kinda People," 1979's "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)," 1980's "Can We Still Be Friends," 1981's "Johnny and Mary" and "Looking for Clues," and, of course, 1986's "Addicted to Love" and 1987's "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On." While he continued to chart into the early '90s, only one song -- 1988's "Addicted to Love" rewrite "Simply Irresistible" -- could hold a candle to those hits, and it's here in a live version that concludes the album. While it would have been nice if the original studio version had somehow made the cut, the rest of this is such a terrific listen, charting Palmer's progression from laid-back New Orleans-styled blue-eyed soul crooner through new wave pop guy through his sleek rock makeover with Riptide, that most listeners won't mind that it's a live version, and choose to simply enjoy the best single-disc Palmer compilation yet assembled (and anybody wanting to dig deeper should turn to 2002's similarly excellent double-disc set Best of Both Worlds). ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Robert Palmer's tuxedo on the album cover isn't much of a surprise; he's always been the most dapper of pop stars. However, the tux turns out to be an apt representation of an album that's a real change of pace. Here, Palmer performs a program of pre-rock pop standards, with a couple of original ringers in the classic style. Palmer's not Sinatra, but he can swing when he puts his mind to it, and between his appealingly intimate vocals and the lush, Nelson Riddle style arrangements, this is a terrific late night moonlight and whiskey sort of album. Highlight: "Baby it's Cold Outside," done as a frankly erotic duet with Carnie Wilson.  http://www.allmusic.com/album/ridin-high-mw0000616162
