Polly Bergen's final Philips LP Act One-Sing, Too is also her most alluring. Arranger Jerry Fields channels inspiration from contemporary pop and jazz to create a hip, stylish atmosphere that perfectly complements her dusky voice. Fields introduces melancholy horns, vibes and other accents that underscore the session's after-hours atmosphere, while Bergen responds with a thoughtful performance that fully capitalizes on the world-weary sophistication of her distinctive approach. The material's a bit tame and predictable, but at least the forward-thinking arrangements compensate. And while it's inaccurate to suggest that Bergen reinvents chestnuts like "The Way You Look Tonight" and "As Time Goes By," she certainly approaches them from interesting angles. ~ Jason Ankeny https://www.allmusic.com/album/act-one-sing-too-mw0000855707

Polly Bergen's first album for Columbia stems from her Emmy-winning appearance in The Helen Morgan Story for an episode in the CBS series Playhouse 90. Bergen runs through 11 songs associated with the Broadway torch singer and does excellent readings of Morgan standards like "Can't Help Lovin' That Man," "Don't Ever Leave Me," and "Body and Soul." She has the throaty voice, golden pipes, and wide range to best any star on Broadway, though her delivery is occasionally over-evocative and melodramatic  a common complaint against Broadway actors. Bergen Sings Morgan was reissued in 1999 as a Collectables two-fer also featuring her subsequent Columbia LP, The Party's Over. ~ John Bush https://www.allmusic.com/album/bergen-sings-morgan-mw0000888016

(2:42) 18. Bye Bye Blackbird - Single Version
(2:23) 19. The Happiest Girl In the World - Single Version

My Heart Sings pairs Polly Bergen with arranger Luther Henderson, who shakes up his signature orchestral approach via the addition of cool jazz horns and late-night accoutrements perfectly matched to Bergen's dusky vocals. It's a shame the material is so predictable standard "singer with strings" fare like "Sophisticated Lady," "When I Fall in Love," and "I'm in the Mood for Love" but the set's style and sophistication make up for covering such familiar ground; for that matter, Bergen is such a distinct performer that even the most well-tread lyrics seem refreshed, and the joy she brings to bubbly renditions of "Lucky Day" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" is infectious. ~ Jason Ankeny https://www.allmusic.com/album/my-heart-sings-mw0000093741

All Alone by the Telephone pairs Polly Bergen with arranger Luther Henderson to create a deeply melancholy song cycle that explores romantic estrangement and isolation from a refreshingly adult perspective. Bergen's dusky, world-weary vocals never resort to histrionics, finding their mode of expression in restraint, not release -- her thoughtful interpretations of material like "Glad to Be Unhappy," "Too Late Now," and "By Myself" strip the songs to their core, articulating their themes of loss with hard-fought maturity. Henderson's sympathetic, meticulous arrangements are no less essential to the album's uncommon sophistication. ~Jason Ankeny

Mostly known as a TV and film actress, Polly Bergen recorded several album of pop standards in the 1950s and '60s, as well as using her expressive voice onstage in musicals. This rare collection features recordings from the very beginning of her career, showcasing tunes from 1950 through 1956. The looks and poise of a 1950s Vogue model; the mentholated singing voice; the actress' approach to words all these helped launch Polly Bergen on a career that began in the late 40s and still thrives today. This CD includes almost every side she cut before 1957, when she burst into prominence with an Emmy-winning TV portrayal of the legendary torch singer Helen Morgan. Earlier on, Bergen had recorded a scattered pile of hillbilly tunes (the by-product of her birth in Tennessee), novelty kitsch, and a fine first album of torch songs, heard here in its entirety.
