“Toda Una Vida” is not your typical Boleros album even though it has mostly Bolero standards. Spaniard singer Carmen Cuesta gives a nice jazzy spin to classic Boleros in her CD with the help of jazz guitarist and husband Chuck Loeb. “Most singers at one point in their career will want to do a Boleros album…” Carmen told me in an interview with Latino Music Café. “There are so many good Bolero albums out there, that I wanted to give mine something different. I wanted to combine the American influence of Jazz with the Latin essence of the Bolero” said the singer raised in Madrid. To be able to achieve this beautiful differentiation in “Toda Una Vida”, it helps to work (and be married ) with legendary guitarist Chuck Loeb, who played in Stan Getz´s band.

“Collaborating with Chuck allowed me to take (the songs) into a slightly different dimension, a new approach” says Carmen in her press release for “Toda Una Vida” (released January 2014). In our conversation, Carmen said that they wanted to change the tempo of the typical Bolero, but still keeping the essence of the message and feeling of each song. This extraordinary mix of beautiful Bolero standards with a slightly different musical approach was achieved thanks to Chuck Loeb’s musical mastery as well as the participation of Madrid-based renown musicians. “Toda Una Vida” was co-produced by popular Spanish music producer Paco Ortega and was recorded in Ortega’s Musicgrama recording studio in Madrid.¨ For her 6th album, Carmen Cuesta selected a combination of songs that include renown Bolero standards, a few less known Boleros, and then added one song of her own authorship. “My first thought was to record less known but beautiful Boleros that people might not be familiar with; but then decided that I also wanted to record some Bolero standards that I really love. To round up the album I thought, ‘why not add one of my own compositions?’, and added “No Te Confundas”. http://www.latinomusiccafe.com/2014/02/16/carmen-cuestas-jazzy-boleros-in-toda-una-vida/

Andrea Motis and Joan Chamorro are an unlikely musical team. Born more than 30 years apart, they hail from two very different and distinct musical generations. And yet they are the two primary figures in a series of projects in their hometown of Barcelona since 2010. In less than five years, Motis and Chamorro have set their city and other parts of Europe ablaze with the energetic sounds of jazz from either side of the Atlantic. Since they began collaborating, Motis and Chamorro have recorded four albums together, 5 with the Sant Andreau Jazz Band, 7 more with different projects, toured throughout Europe and South America, and have worked on stage or in the studio with a variety of high-profile musicians, including Dick Oatts, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Scott Robinson, Terrell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Jesse Davis, Bobby Gordon and many others. Along the way, they have received numerous awards and accolades for their artistic endeavors. In 2011, they received an ARC Award for Best New Artist (2011) and an Artist of the Year Award from the Enderrock Jaç Awards.

In addition to the awards, they have also received nominations by some of the most prestigious music organizations in Europe: Best Group of the Year (ANJIM, 2011), Best Jazz and Blues Group (Arc Awards, 2011), and Best Theater and Concert Hall Tour (ARC Awards, 2011). And yet, for all of their successes, their story is a simple one that begins with little more than a teacher, a student, and a shared passion for music in general and jazz in particular. Joan Chamorro was born in Barcelona in September 1962. He spent his childhood listening to pop music, but didn’t start focusing on classical music and jazz until he began playing the saxophone and guitar at age 18. He attended the Taller de Musics, a music school in Barcelona devoted to jazz. After four years, he gave up classical music and the guitar and focused his efforts entirely on jazz and the saxophone. In addition to playing and recording with the Taller de Musics, Chamorro also played live gigs with several local big bands. “I was very lucky to be a part of this scene,” he recalls, “and to have the chance to play with great soloists from some very popular big bands.” In the years since he received his music degree, Chamorro has played with numerous high-profile musicians from around the world: Stevie Wonder, Manhattan Transfer, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, and recorded with Tete Montoliu, Bebo Valdes, and many others. “It is always great to share experiences and music with such a great cast of international musicians,” he says. “And it’s an amazing opportunity to grow as an artist.” In the midst of these various collaborations, Chamorro has also directed the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a group in Barcelona made up of children and teenagers between the ages of 9 and 20. It was here that he first met Andrea Motis, an 11-year-old trumpeter who was also one of his saxophone students.

“She was always a very serious student,” Chamorro recalls. “One day I was teaching the band and I asked if anyone wanted to sing a song, and she was the first and only one who said yes. She was 13 years old by this time. From the very beginning, I heard something special in her voice, something that could be improved if she were given the opportunity to learn and grow in the company of good musicians. I talked with her parents, and everyone agreed that she would be part of my various music projects.” By this young age, Motis had already been immersed in music of every kind. She’d been playing the trumpet since age 7, and her earliest musical memories include Charlie Mingus (one of her father’s favorite musicians) as well as Cuban jazz. By age 10, she starts exploring just about every form of American jazz until nowadays listening to great American female vocalists such as Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday and Nancy Wilson, also Cécile McLorin Salvant, Amy Winehouse, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato and instrumentalists such as Tom Harrell, Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, Perico Sambeat as well as iconic jazz artists like Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown. “The first time I sang in public was for Chamorro’s audition at the Taller de Music school,” says Motis. “I sang a Basin Street blues number that Joan later uploaded to the internet. After that, he invited me to sing on his album.”

The album was Joan Chamorro Presenta Andrea Motis, released in 2010 when Motis was 14. As the title suggests, the album is a showcase for Chamorro’s young protégé who plays trumpet, saxophone and sings throughout the recording. “We recorded a lot of songs in different ways,” says Motis. “While deciding the final album repertoire we realized that we liked most of the songs that were sung. That’s why Joan thought of the album as a way to introduce me as a musician and singer, because my role turned out to be more important than we had originally thought it would be.” In the final cut of the album, Motis sings on 16 of the 17 tracks. “She showed a great sensibility and a capacity to share emotions,” says Chamorro. “There was a great natural quality in every song we recorded.” The project proved to be an extremely valuable learning experience. Motis recalls: “It gave me the opportunity to play for the first time with amazing musicians such as Ignasi Terraza, Josep Traver, Eseve Pi, Dani Alonso and Bobby Gordon, and American clarinetist who played with all the great classic jazz artists before he died.” Feeling Good, a recording of live performances throughout Barcelona, followed in 2012. Two years after the first album, Motis had grown and matured as a musician and a vocalist. “This was the point where she started improvising, and it’s reflected in the CD, where all of her solos are entirely hers,” says Chamorro. “I trusted her knowledge and encouraged her to improvise during our shows too. We were performing a lot at that time and it was a good time to practice that. It was amazing to see her progression in every rehearsal and every show.”Their third recording, Live in Jamboree Barcelona, captured the band during their three appearances at the Barcelona music festival with guest saxophonist Scott Hamilton. “The thing flowed so smoothly,” says Motis. “We played new songs and some others that were in our previous repertoire. We felt truly at ease playing the music. It was a very special experience and I was truly happy with the final result.”

Chamorro and Motis recorded yet another live big band performance this time on video as well as audio in 2014 at the Barcelona International Jazz Festival. The CD/DVD package is scheduled for release in August 2014. The majority of the repertoire in the upcoming release by The Motis Chamorro Big Band is sung by Motis, but Chamorro’s baritone sax and Motis’s trumpet also figure prominently in the mix.“This project includes the very best musicians in the Barcelona jazz scene,” says Chamorro. “Many of them are excellent soloists who play an important role in the tracks on which they play.” In addition to their extensive work in the Barcelona scene, The Motis Chamorro Group has also played numerous festivals in France, Switzerland, Brazil and Turkey. “Andrea and I are doing the best we can to share our music with as many people as possible,” says Chamorro. “Who knows what we’ll be doing in the future, or where we’ll be doing it? But I do envision a beautiful future for her. She is already a well known artist, and she will be even more well know in years to come. She deserves it. She has a great talent, ability and magic necessary to do so. All of this comes from the things that I think are most important: honesty, authenticity and humility.” “I’m very happy to be collaborating in new musical projects, experimenting with new styles,” says Motis. “And as Joan says: ‘Creativity has no bounds or limits.’ We have so many projects and opportunities, and the chance to collaborate with so many artists. Maintaining this vibe is the best that I can hope for right now and for the future. We’ll see!”http://www.sasamusic.com/artist/andrea-motis-and-joan-chamorro

Júlio Resende embraced the heritage of Carlos Paredes and Amália Rodrigues and from his fingertips sprang a new approach to Fado.

After having sold out venues in Dili and Tokyo, the pianist’s next destination is Paris, where he will perform at the JazzyColors Festival before returning to Portugal to present his new record. The “Fado & Further” concerts are scheduled for November 27th at the Auditório Municipal de Olhão, in Algarve and November 28th at the Grande Auditório do Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon.

Thirteen years of jazz and 12 "Joan Chamorro presents ...", in this case Carla Motis, who joined the Sant Andreu Jazz Band in 2008, with 11 years, and who has been the only guitarist who has formed part of the band. As Freddie Green in Count Basie's bigband, Carla Motis, discreetly, during all these years, has given a special sound to the rhythm section. His time, every day that passed, was more solid, her "compings" supported the soloists that were emerging and she remained in the background, but with a great rhythmic and harmonic contribution. My work in the context of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band has been to try, not so much to teach music properly, but also to transmit my passion for it. Making young people who start at an early age see that devoting themselves to music, specifically Jazz, is something wonderful and worth spending part of our time. On the other hand, I understand that all students are different and that their times in the learning processes and giving light to their creativity and what they are learning and assimilating, are also so. Carla Motis is, for me, and I say it with great satisfaction, the realization that work, perseverance, patience and believing in something have their morereward. Carla Motis, discreetly but in a continuous evolution, begins, three or four years ago, to surface with her improvisations, little by little, timidly, with a coherent discourse, beyond her rhythmic function.

A speech based on bebop, with references such as Charlie Christian, Grant Creen or Wes Montgomery, and all this with a work supervised with great success by his teacher and collaborator in many of my projects, Josep Traver. And growing and enjoying every day of its evolution, comes this CD, in which we can listen to Carla's wonderful phrasing, as well as a beautiful sound and a coherent and increasingly original speech. One of the things I would like to highlight especially is the incredible time and swing that characterizes it. "Carla is coming", and never stop, because I am convinced that Carla has a lot to tell us with her voice, with the voice of her guitar, because both are the same, and merge, how can it be otherwise in it, a wonderful artist ... He was born in Madrid (Spain), December 1, 1956. He starts young playing the guitar but soon he is attracted to the world of wind instruments. His musical references are many artists and different styles. Professionally he starts playing in the city “haunts”. Diego Carrasco, Jean Luc Vallet, Manuel Soler, Peer Wyboris, David Thomas, Ricardo Miralles, Pedro Iturralde, Vlady Bas, among others, are references and  masters of his environment. His first professional recording with Las Grecas is an anecdote, late in Dolores Band, He is grouped around Pedro Ruy Blas and several musicians of the Madrid scene, to record 3 LPs and in one of them appears Paco de Lucia, with whom he will work over time in many recordings and worldwide tours. Also at the same time he met Camarón, and records in La “Leyenda del Tiempo”, since then, more than 20 albums and several trips around the world taking his personal language and vision of the Hispanic musical tradition. He is a usual partner of Chick Corea, and plays in his band Touchstone on a worldwide tour. His collaborators list extends covering the most diverse styles and backgrounds, from “solo flute” to his latest Flamenco Big Band project Huellas XL, flamenco and jazz trios or symphonics projects make this musician, an authentic  all-terrain. There are musicians who are masters at what they do but become torpid with other musics, others manage to mix languages with relative ease, but only a few are genuine alchemists, those who know the nature and properties of the metals they want to merge  and they know to get pure art through the alchemy. Chano Dominguez, Javier Colina - Chano & Colina

Chano Domínguez is from Cádiz, Spain, the birthplace (according to legend) of flamenco. His discography is mostly on Spanish labels. He released two records on Blue Note in 2010 and 2012 (Piano Ibérico and Flamenco Sketches), but they are atypical and already rarities. Over the Rainbow came out last year on Sunnyside; now there’s Chano & Colina too. For those new to Domínguez, the two Sunnyside titles are where to start, and they will be revelations. His unique piano language organically fuses two sensibilities: the rhythms and harmonies of flamenco and the improvisatory spirit of jazz. The first Sunnyside album was a solo concert. Chano & Colina, also recorded live in Spain, adds bassist Javier Colina. “Ziryab,” by Paco de Lucía, is unleashed excitement, an ornate spontaneous jazz design overtaken by the climactic flourishes of flamenco. Even more striking are the North American standards. “You and the Night and the Music” has been waiting 80 years for Domínguez to inject all those extra flamenco beats into its straight 4/4. A song about being “filled with flaming desire” has never been set on fire like this. Domínguez’s rhythmic sophistication and intensity do amazing things to ballads. “My One and Only Love” becomes a spring-loaded flamenco waltz, an assertive new concept of tenderness. It’s initially surprising that he chooses two songs associated with Bill Evans, but on them he proves that he’s more than a master of metrical manipulation; he generates energy in the service of lyricism. “We Will Meet Again” has a new lift, which makes it more, not less, poignant. (Its emotion is deepened by one of Colina’s many dramatic solos.) “You Must Believe in Spring” is transformed by the creative force that sets it into throbbing motion. Michel Legrand’s fragile avowal of faith has rarely sounded so sensual. https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/javier-colina-chano-dominguez-chano-colina/

Mayte Alguacil began as a flute player at 12, and developed a real taste for singing only in the last few years. She started singing in different projects, until she decided to do her first project as a singer, an album devoted to what she loved the most: the Great American Song Book. And so she did an album of standards. The excellent work of the rhythm section allow things to flow in a relaxed and natural way. The sure, driving drums of Jorge Rossy and the strong bass of Pedro Campos along with the melodic, swinging and great comping and soloingof Michael Kanan are the perfect support to Mayte on the mid and up tempo tunes. On the singer-pianist duets, beauty is the word that best defines what they do in each song.

Her singing comes out as fresh and pure, straight from the heart, with a close love for the melody and full of the sweetest nuances, structured by her own feeling for simplicity. And to embrace simplicity and make it expressive, lovely and moving is one of the most difficult things for any artist to pull off. ~ Editorial Reviews https://www.amazon.com/Day-Mayte-Alguacil/dp/B015JMT8G0

Born in Badalona (Catalonia, Spain). Guitar player, composer, arranger, music producer. His family was of humble class, and for this reason, he could never afford a quality electric guitar until he was 20 years old, seeing his dad who was accumulating credibility thanks to his concerts, radio programs and the local press decided to buy his first guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. It was the first left-handed Gibson guitar that came to Spain, they told him at the New-Phono music store in Barcelona. Until that moment He had always been asking for borrowed a guitar to anyone, either by a friend or like once happens by a missionary from the Carmelite Church, where he was playing every Sunday in the church band. That missioner lent him a guitar "Framus" for a long time. Perhaps that is the reason that at present he can also play the guitar with the strings upside down (since he is left-handed) because of the habit of playing with "normal" borrowed guitars for so long.

At age 17 he decided to finish his studies in mercantile expertise after a problem of mental exhaustion because he worked ten hours a day, and another four continued his studies at night and on weekends playing wherever he could. Apart combined all that with his favourite hobby was to play Ping Pong (table tennis) at a club in the city and becoming champion of Badalona later on. That took him to a level of stress that caused an emotional relapse and nervous breakdown of great magnitude. Then he had no choice but to stop working on anything that was not music which caused him a big problem with his father, who was an entrepreneur and one of the best European printing technicians. It should be added that every time he tried to study at the music conservatory in his city, regularly he was forbidden to examine and get the degree, himself because he was left-handed and in those moments that the country was governed by the dictatorship of General Franco that was forbidden. He understood that his training should be self-taught and launched for it.

He is known in the international scene for his esthetical flexibility that covers styles as unalike as gypsy jazz, free jazz, Avantgarde, jazz fusion, Bebop and, in classical music, contemporary and electroacoustic music, mostly XX century styles. Currently, his work as a composer exceeds the amount of 1000 registered compositions at the SGAE, (Sociedad General de Autores de España) among Jazz music and classical music. He is also currently active as a music producer, with his own recording studio and as a consultant-engraver for music publishing companies, schools, etc. He is publishing his works with three publishing Co.; from Catalonia - Clivis publication and La Ma de guido, and from Denmark - Bergmann Edition.

Since releasing their first eponymous album in 2007, Elkano Browning Cream's career has been characterized by a multi-angular approach to music, resulting in records that are rich in nuances, containing thorough melodies with a strong rhythmic component. Coordinated by pianist and organist from San Sebastian, Mikel Azpiroz, the band is completed by the Parisian drum player Franck Mantegari, and the British guitarist who lives in Barcelona, Dave Wilkinson. The three members provide their interesting parallel careers, including collaborations with artists such as: Alpha Blondi, Saint Germain, Brian Jackson, and Jabier Muguruza, among others, and all this background combined with the bands international nature results in jazz with a personality of its own, eclectic and exotic. They edited album “2” in 2010, following the footsteps of their first work, and in 2012 they released “Bohemia”, a small jewel of gypsy sounds, a tribute to street musicians. “UH EH” (2014) is a clear manifestation of the groups maturity and interpretive strength. “Bor Bor” (2018) is the band’s most powerful and jammin’ album up to this day. The band's multiculturality also results in a nomadic character; since their early days in the USA (where they met), the band has performed in several festivals and venues in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania: San Sebastian Jazz Festival, Woodford Folk Festival (Australia), Cotton Club of Shanghai (China), Jazz Festival of Quito (Ecuador), Jazz Festival of Delhi (India), Madrids Veranos de la Villa, Cultura Inquieta de Getafe, etc.

Big Band Jazz Maresme, it's been ten years ahead of this project ... how is it possible? with the bureaucratic "sticks on the wheels" and other things that we encounter. Also, of wanderings, little institutional support and programmers are disappointing. There is only one explanation: we are crazy to touch and suffer from anxiety if we spend too many hours without contact with music. At the same time we also believe that we do a pedagogical social function, defending and showing this music that we like so much, jazz.

In these 10 years, the Big Band has evolved, has compacted its sound and currently has the ability to reach the repertoires of the different projects, much faster than at the beginning. Also, individually, we have evolved, as musicians, because we had to be at the level of demand that the orchestra, directed by Gerard Nieto, asked. As the director said at the beginning "we have to be a professional jazz orchestra, capable of achieving any repertoire or project" (he said nothing of: "in a short time and few essays" that we usually do, because as in all the rest of the things of life it always goes away at the last moment: the scores arrive late or it is difficult to coordinate 17 people (worse still: 17 musicians !!) to find the time to try.

Finally, to acknowledge, we have to know previously and as we said before, humbly, we believe we can do this teaching role, presenting intitulating proposals to help you get to know this music a bit more. (Translated from Spanish.)

The story of El Naán, a group of artists who travel around the world to look for rhythms, melodies and stories and when we returned to our town we discovered with surprise that those music had always been there, under the ground that we tread, riding our genes. Buried among the ruins of memory we find black seeds and we discover with astonishment that our tradition contained those beautiful seeds that unite all the peoples and communities that work and care for the earth. They are autochthonous seeds but they were brought from far away, carefully selected and guarded for centuries. They are seeds pregnant with music, rhythms and stories hidden by our ancestors in our own home. These seeds are our culture and heritage inherited from grandparents and great-grandparents. They are our best inheritance.

We have turned those seeds into songs that we now want to share with you. (Translated from Spanish.)

Woods was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He studied music with Lennie Tristano, who influenced him greatly, at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Juilliard School. His friend, Joe Lopes, coached him on clarinet as there was no saxophone major at Juilliard at the time. Although he did not copy Charlie “Bird” Parker, he was known as the New Bird, a label which was also attached to other alto players such as Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley at one time or another in their careers.

In the mid-’50s, Woods began to front his own bands. He got major exposure after Quincy Jones invited him to accompany a 1956 State Department-sponsored world tour with the big band of Dizzy Gillespie. In 1959 Woods traveled Europe with Jones’ band; in 1962 he participated in Benny Goodman’s Russian tour. After moving to France in 1968, Woods led the European Rhythm Machine, a group which tended toward avant-garde jazz. He returned to the United States in 1972 and, after an unsuccessful attempt to establish an electronic group, he formed a quintet which was still performing, with some changes of personnel, in 2004. As his theme, Woods used a piece titled “How’s Your Mama?” Woods earned the top alto sax player award almost 30 times in Downbeat magazine’s annual readers’ poll. His quintet was awarded the top small combo title several times.

The Barcelona Jazz Orquestra –Barcelona’s international big band- directed by Dani Alonso, is made up by some of the best jazz specialists in Catalonia. Considered as one of the best big bands in Europe, they regularly perform in prestigious festivals accompanying big names such as Benny Golson, Frank Wess, Ann Hampton Callaway and Tony Hadley. They have recorded with Phil Woods, Nicholas Payton and Jesse Davis as special guests. BJO regularly performs at the legendary Apolo concert hall with a repertoire of jazz and swing that transforms the room known as Paral·lel Savoy in Barcelona.

Over the Rainbow is a genius effort from a historic musician who continues his storied narrative here in America. We are honored and grateful he is here. It is a giant leap forward on a musical pilgrimage with no end. His offerings along the way have a unique organic presence that reminds us that we all emanate from a colorful palate of cultures worldwide, but exist as a single canvas of humanity. As we express each color as unique and beautiful, we search for ways to have them blend together, to add and subtract them, to create an interaction of unity going forward. Dominguez continues to draw from the cultures and people that inspire his creative genius, and apply them to a tangible form we can all understand, and aspire to emulate. There is a maturity in his playing on this record, a thoughtfulness that pays homage to the multiplicity of musical currents that rise to the top during solo performance. To a listener unfamiliar with the work of Mr. Dominguez, it serves as a sampler of his stunning virtuosity, and joyous fusion of flamenco and jazz. To those already engaged in his musical voyage, it represents a snapshot along the way to new horizons, behind the moon, beyond the rain. ~Paul Rauch
