Through his five volumes of the Great American Songbook, the rascally Rod Stewart has been down this way before, but the addition of Jools Holland adds an extra dimension to his latest outing. Stewart’s age-worn and smoky voice can still deliver, as these 13 covers of classic big band numbers prove.

The album opens with the snappy, rousing ‘Lullaby Of Broadway’, which sets a high bar for an orchestra who come on as full-blooded as you might expect. Although Stewart says he wants to leave the rock ‘n’ roll stuff behind for a while, the versions of ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’ and ‘Night Train’ suggest a reluctance to go all the way with that aim.

He even manages to smuggle a languid touch of mischief into the relatively sedate ‘Tennessee Waltz’. Elsewhere, the singer can still surprise with comfortable and convincing run-throughs of such harmless classics as ‘Pennies From Heaven’ and ‘Love Is The Sweetest Thing’ , while he even dusts off ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ from volume five of his “songbook” series for a worthy re-run.

At first glance, Jools Holland and José Feliciano don't seem like an ideal match. Jools kept the boogie-woogie torch burning in the U.K., while Feliciano crossed over in the U.S. thanks to his blend of folk, flamenco, and easy listening. Look a little closer, and it's easy to see that the two share common ground in the middle of the road. Feliciano specialized in smooth, vaguely soulful MOR pop, Holland carved out a niche as an amiable TV host, so they both know how to please a crowd, and As You See Me Now is indeed a crowd-pleaser. Containing a bit of soul, a bit of folk, some jump blues and Beatles, plus a new ska version of "Feliz Navidad," As You See Me Now covers a lot of musical territory, but it feels cohesive because both Holland and Feliciano know not to push any particular sound too hard. This record features eight of Jools' original compositions as well as 10 carefully selected pieces interpreting the work of the pianists and composers that he loves. It opens with Jools' own May, a unique field recording of his piano in conversation with songbirds, influenced by French composer Olivier Messiaen, followed by Grand Hotel, co-written with Sting a while ago and here completely reinvented with a mix of contemporary dance rhythms and stride piano. Next is a collaboration with iconic musician and producer Brian Eno, who sings backing vocals and experiments with soundscapes on Track 3, Last Date. The album also sees Jools performing alongside his acclaimed Rhythm & Blues Orchestra on three of the tracks: Strange Cargo; Romantic Ruin; and Bumble Boogie (in which he quotes Bach's Prelude No 1). The stylistic range is broad, taking in the baroque counterpoint of Christabel and the blistering boogie woogie of Bang And Pop as well as paying tribute to works by great Jazz artists Mary Lou Williams, Sidney Bechet, Freddie Slack, and Erroll Garner. In contrast, the middle of the album showcases a four-strong blues segment inspired by Jimmy Yancey and Lloyd Glenn. Jools pays tribute to his friend and collaborator Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) by covering Rebennack's Dorothy, but perhaps the greatest example of Jools' breadth of approach is his arrangement of Eruption by Dutch prog rock group Focus. Chris Barber - Memories Of My Trip (2-Disc Set)

The double-CD features Chris Barber and various line-ups of the Chris Barber Band with an impressive array of guests, such as Ottilie Patterson, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Cotton, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Keith Emerson, Mark Knopfler, Albert Nicholas and many, many more.

The first CD is a complete firework of blues, jazz and gospel songs. We especially like the Muddy Waters Blues Band, playing Kansas City with Chris on trombone. Another great song is Diggin' My Potatoes, with Lonnie Donegan. But this is not the well-known 1954 version recorded at the Royal Festival Hall: it is a recording by the Chris Barber Jazz & Blues Band plus Lonnie Donegan in 1987. And the fireworks of the first CD continue on the second! The opening song is St. Louis Blues / Missouri Special / St. Louis Blues, featuring Ottilie Patterson singing and Edmond Hall playing clarinet. And a great surprise is the duet of Ed Hall and Ian Wheeler, both on clarinet on "High Society". At last this number is now available on CD. The sound changes dramatically with Rock Candy, a rock-oriented recording from 1966 with Keith Emerson and Chris Barber.

It is almost impossible to name and pay the respect to all musicians on this double-CD, so we suggest, sit back in a comfortable chair, sip a good drink (or two!), and listen to more than two hours of great music! All in all, this CD is a fitting tribute to Chris Barber and his more than sixty years as a bandleader and one of jazz's great musicians; it surely is indispensable as an item in every Barber fan's collection.
