In 2021, the Barcelona Jazz Festival dedicated the artist portrait to me and I had 5 concerts. For one of them I had the idea of bringing together all the musicians with whom I had recorded a CD from the “presentas” collection. There were 15 musicians and I could almost form a big band: Andrea Motis, Eva Fernández, Magalí Datzira, Rita Payés, Marc Martín, Joan Mar Sauqué, Èlia Bastida, Joan Codina, Alba Armengou, Carla Motis, Joana Casanova, Jan Domènech, Marçal Perramon, Joan Martí and Alba Esteban.

I completed the sections with two trumpet players, Elsa Armengou and Gerard Peñaranda, a saxophonist, Koldo Munné (with whom I am currently recording his presentation CD), three trombonists (Claudia Rostey, Max Tato and Perot Rigau, and for the rhythm section I had the one who had been the first drummer of the SAJB: Arnau Julià.

Each of the musicians presented chose a theme. In most cases I asked for special arrangements for the occasion and Joan Monné was in charge of writing them. All the recordings I have made are important and make me feel proud and happy, but the one we made for JAZZING 12 VOL. 2, with practically all the musicians who had been members of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and this one you are holding in your hands are really very special to me.

They are the summary of something important, of something wonderful; they are the summary of a precious dream that has no end. The music on this new CD is marvellous and we can hear the maturity they have all reached over the years. None of the protagonists of this work are now in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, but I feel that each and every one of them will always be part of our history. A story of unwanted success, the result of constant work and of believing that jazz can be and is a music that young people can fall in love with. This big band was my dream and now, once again, it has become a reality. https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/joan-chamorro-presentas-big-band/

As a great reference for violin and jazz, the name of Stéphane Grappelli has accompanied Èlia Bastida since her beginnings in the world of jazz. She defines him as a lyrical, passionate, virtuosic, technical, detailed and romantic musician.

Until now, she has made punctual tributes to him with recordings of some songs like “Stardust-Shine”, “It Had to be You”, “How About You”, among others. In this album “Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli” she wanted to give her particular point of view, looking for how, from his musical personality, to approach Grappelli’s music and take it to her field.

On this album you can listen to a journey through the various facets of Stéphane Grappelli: from the important tandem he formed with Django Reinhardt with the songs “Clair de Lune”, “Anniversary Song” and “Troublant Bolero”, continuing with some of the standards that he recorded as “Makin’ Whoopee”, “I Can’t Get Started”, “Flamingo”, “Nature Boy”, “My One and Only Love” and “Django”, and recalling with the song “Izaura” his incursions in the new bag with the album “La Grande Réunion” that he recorded with Baden Powell in 1986.

We also can find on the disc a version of Bach’s Double Concerto recalling Grappelli’s recording with Eddie South and Django Reinhardt and two songs that Èlia Bastida has composed for the occasion, thinking of bringing the essence of the violinist to other styles such as Brazilian music and funk with “Dance for Stéphane” and “Grappelia”. https://jazztojazz.com/en/product/tribute-to-stephane-grappelli/

I’m Èlia Bastida, born in 1995 in Barcelona. In 1999, when I was 4 years old, I started playing the violin. Since then, music has become more and more important in my life and has become my essence. I love jazz, classical, Brazilian music, melodies, the ability of music to communicate, to excite us, to make you enjoy. I studied classical violin until I was 17, when I joined the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, directed by Joan Chamorro. It was then that I discovered the world of jazz and I was passionate about the possibility of creation and the freedom it gave me.

Later I started singing and playing saxophone in the sax section of the big band. Now, voice and sax are an important part of my concert set. During my career in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band I have played with incredible musicians like Dick Oatts, Scott Hamilton, Joe Magnarelli, Scott Robinson, Joel Frahm, John Allred, Jon-Erik Kellso or Luigi and Pasquale Grasso. And in several countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, France…https://eliabastida.com/en/bio/

Two years after the CD “Joan Chamorro presents Èlia Bastida”, in which she appeared in her different facets as a performer (violinist as main instrument, vocalist and tenor sax), we give birth to this “The magic sound of the violin”. Èlia, during the 8 years that she has been part of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, a project that I have directed for almost 14 years, has had an interest, a dedication, such a passionate dedication to music and specifically to jazz, that she has made May her evolution lead her to be, today, a great soloist, especially with the violin. The violin is an instrument that, in my opinion, still has a lot to contribute to jazz. There have been and are great violinists (Grappelli, Venuti, Ponty, Lockwood, to name just a few). Without neglecting the musicality, strength, intensity of Grappelli as the first reference, and adding everything contributed by bebop, hardbop and other music, Èlia's search for a discourse that collects all the aspects that she incorporates, the finally, they walk along their own musical path, rich in nuances, open and free of labels, but, above all, passionate, with which they manage to extract all the wonderful possibilities that “the magical sound of the violin” has. The Magic Sound of the Violin Èlia Bastida joins the universe of jazz violinists. Our next appointment is “Èlia Bastida meets Scott Hamilton”, of which we have already recorded 5 songs and which will recall the meeting that the great saxophonist had with Joe Venuti back in the eighties.
