Don Thompson's (Order of Canada) specially tailored string quartet arrangements, plus harp compliment Panton’s honest delivery, while Phil Dwyer’s saxophone (2012 JUNO Award Winner) underscores the sensuality of much of the album. There is also a delectable duet with bluesman Harrison Kennedy that has unbeatable chemistry! http://www.amazon.ca/Red-Diana-Panton/dp/B00EZ3WIW6

Diana Panton's 3rd release 'Pink' stays the course she plotted with her first two well-received albums. She's working once again with a small group, although when one of the band members is genius multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson you get a lot of bang for your musician buck. Reg Schwager is also back, accompanying with his customary artful and sensitive playing. A new addition, and a completely fitting one given Panton's languid style, is trumpet and flugelhorn player, Guido Basso. His fills and solos add rich warmth to the mix, like honey drizzled over an English muffin, filling in all the nooks and crannies. For this new album Diana has carefully chosen a collection of well-crafted songs that she can mine for lyrical gold. She is foremost a story teller - not a flashy or emotionally overwrought singer - Diana simply and deftly presents the songs so the listener can take them in without being distracted by vocal pyrotechnics. ~ Editorial Reviews https://www.amazon.com/Pink-Diana-Panton-Trio-1/dp/B002UMF1FU

"You really should record a live album" is what I have heard now for a few years from friends and colleagues. "But how and when and what if it's not perfect?" has been my question. "Perfect!" has been their answer.

New York has become a second home for me over the past few years and I am filled with excitement every time I sing in that crazy and wonderful city. New Yorkers are unparalleled in their support and enthusiasm for good music and I have been very fortunate to have sung at several great venues there, including the fabulous Metropolitan Room, which is where this CD was recorded.

I loved making my two previous albums, The Rules of the Game and Delishious, and learned much about the process of putting together a studio recording. But since the very essence of jazz is one of freedom, spontaneity and "being in the moment", it made sense to me, at this point in my career, to embark on my first live recording. Though we didn't plan to turn the evening of October 26th into a live recording, which would have meant using a multi-track recording technique (instead of the one-track recording technique that was used, which doesn't allow for any "fixes" later on), all the stars shone in our favour that night.

From the piano that had just been tuned the day before, to the great skills of recording engineer Jean-Pierre Perreaux, to all the special people in the audience, and to the fact that all the musicians - myself, pianist Tedd Firth and bassist Steve Watson - were very much in synch and having tremendous fun that night everything seemed like a blessing for this project. One song that was not a part of this show was my own composition, "Ocean Eyes"; by popular demand, I have included it here as a bonus studio recording.

I had called my show "Heart to Heart" and my intention was to musically engage in an open and heart-felt dialogue between singer, song and audience. So sit back and relax as you are about to listen to as "naked" and truthful a delivery of music as I could have hoped for - joyful and honest. ~Adi Braun.

Let us now pause to take assessment of another new vocalist, Canadian Adi Braun, who impressed with her 2003 debut, Delishious. The same trio of pianist Doug Riley and veterans Steve Wallace (bass) and Terry Clarke (drums) is once again on board for this album, with the addition of Perry White on tenor sax. Adi Braun, originally from Germany, comes from a family of professional singers. Her father sang in various opera companies. She relocated to Canada and evidently has a slight accent. You'd never know that from this recording. She has spent the past few years cultivating cabaret/jazz vocal credentials in Toronto and Montreal and appeared in November, 2005 at Joe's Pub in NYC. According to the liner notes, her taste includes a number of jazz singers, but her primarily influences are Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Lotte Lenya. This new album is a well-presented cabaret/jazz set, as judged by song selection, cleanly articulated delivery, and, yes, the ability to swing, on at least a limited basis. I do have some reservations on the above, but more about that later. This is the type of hour that is favorably greeted by cabaret enthusiasts: new songs, a few standards, and a lively musical backdrop.

The opening title tune is one of the best ballads on the album, beginning with a full verse. (Do they still write verses anymore?) I was startled to find out that this is a new composition written by Canadian brothers D. & J. Breithaupt, but it is a beauty, seemingly from the golden age of pop and jazz compositions. Of the thirteen tracks, seven are recent compositions, generally not known to the public, while five of the tunes come from the Great American Songbook. While the latter offer the listener a sense of familiarity, other than the mid-tempo Gus Kahn/Walter Donaldson "Love Me Or Leave Me," the others seemed to be rather tired titles (eg. "Honeysuckle Rose," "You Do Something To Me," "I Got It Bad"). Only on the closing track, the Edith Piaf-associated "Hymne A L'Amour," known in English as "If You Love Me," does Braun bring off a cabaret coup with her French ballad version. Perry White's tenor sax backing and solo bring some life to the chestnut "I Got It Bad." Braun tries to liven up "Honeysuckle Rose" by changing the lyrics on one line to "Honey, suck my toes." Part of the decision to introduce new material on album or live performance should involve whether or not the material will work for an audience that will be giving it one or two listens before categorization. Braun and company get in some good ones. A second tune from the Breithaupts, "Show Me Yours," is a typically saucy number that must be a highlight of her live performance; and "Guanabara Bay" is a tempting bossa appreciation of Rio's large body of water.

The two tunes with a similar mid-tempo pacing are done back-to-back, while on other portions of the album, there are several stretches of two ballads strung together. The latter portion of the album has the better new entries. Kurt Weill's "Lonely House," following by an up-tempo standard, leads into Canadian singer/songwriter Shirley Eikhard's "If We Had Never Met" and then Ann Hampton Calloway's "You Can't Rush Spring," concluding with the Piaf song. Two compositions early in the album, Eikhard's "About Last Night" and Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful," were pleasant but did not strike me as memorable. So how does all of this work? Let's give Adi Braun some real credit for reseach, delivery, and presentation, and pianist Riley a big round for pulling this project together. After decades of listening to the work of Steve Wallace and Terry Clarke on Concord and several other labels, as well as their work with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, here are two of the best in the business. ~ Michael P.Gladstone

Born in Toronto, Adi Braun grew up in Europe surrounded by music and musicians. Her parents were opera singers, and her father, Victor Braun, was one of Canada's leading baritones. Her first instrument was piano, which she began studying at the age of six. With no formal voice lessons, she made her first pop/jazz recording at age 19. Following family tradition, Adi trained classically at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music. She began her singing career as a classical recitalist, a soloist with orchestra, and on-stage in operas and operettas alongside her brother, baritone Russell Braun.

Adi started "singing sideways" in the late 90's and returned to the music she loved, which she calls "cabarazz", drawing on aspects from both cabaret and jazz. After winning a local competition in 2001, she was catapulted to centre-stage as one of Canada's leading jazz vocalists. In 2007, Adi was nominated as "Best Major Jazz Vocalist of the Year" by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC).

Her sophisticated style and subtle delivery evokes such vocal greats as Sarah Vaughan, Lotte Lenya, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney. Elizabeth Ahlfors of New York's Cabaret Scenes describes Adi as "A tad Dinah Washington, a hint of Lena Horne, the enveloping warmth of Doris Day, all gift-wrapped up in a unique sound that is singular Adi Braun!" Adi's repertoire ranges from the Great American songbook, to European cabaret, to contemporary songs by Canada legend's Shirley Eikhard and Gordon Lightfoot as well as her own originals. Whether she is singing in English, French, Spanish or German, Adi Braun is "a power-frau who gives jazz standards a unique touch, telling stories that are miniature life moments" (Rheinische Post, Düsseldorf, Germany).

Paul Bley, Tiziana Ghiglioni - Lyrics

(4:56) 9. Soulful
(5:09) 10. The More I See You
(5:03) 11. Ending V

Recorded in 1991, this disc gorgeously assembles two of the most lyric "voices" on one CD, Canadian pianist Paul Bley and Italian chanteuse Tiziana Ghiglioni, performing solo and duet in a series of originals and standards. Of the 11 tunes, Bley composed six, all of which are piano solos, which serve as preludes or postludes --depending on your point of view -- to the duets on the standards by Kern, Gershwin, Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh, etc. Bley's compositions are all lyric songs, or songs without lyrics that follow a conventional form and are adorned by his usual lush pointillism. From "Beginning" to "Clime" to "Soulful," Bley digs very deep for the melodic invention only he can put across, stringing lines of arpeggios next to open mode chords and tying them together in a chromaticism of his own design. His triplets give way to staggered ninths and flatted fifths before working themselves out in a lyric line that is as complex as it is stunningly beautiful. As for the duets with Ghiglioni, she proves Bley's perfect foil -- especially on tunes like Gershwin and Kern's "Long Ago and Far Away." Ghiglioni allows the song to come through her voice; she has no need to "make it her own" by taming or twisting it to fit her oracular talent. She allows Bley to bring her the changes and she takes the melody elegantly, letting it come from her mouth as a song, not a vehicle for vocal stylishness. The same goes for "Lover Man," one of the finest versions ever recorded: As she allows the lyric to drip from her emotions and not vice versa, Bley picks it all up and polishes the tune, as the singing needs no assistance. The final duet, "The More I See You," is a revelation in symbiotic musicianship. Ghiglioni just barely anticipates Bley's line as he holds back a fraction of a second to change the shape of his chord voicing to highlight the depth and dimension in Ghiglioni's singing. The song becomes not a sentimental piece of jazz' nostalgic past, but a living, breathing hymn to longing. And you can't ask for more than that. ~Thom Jurek

Although Carol Welsman has moved to the Los Angeles area, she is best known in her native Canada. While frequently identified with smooth jazz, she has also recorded vintage standards and can swing in straight-ahead jazz settings, too. Her father was a big jazz fan with a large record collection, introducing his daughter to jazz. Not only did she hear his records, but from the age of 12 she often accompanied him to concerts, developing a love for the singing of Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, and Mel Tormé. Welsman played guitar from the age of ten, accompanying her singing of bossa novas and folk music. She began to perform jazz more in her late teens. Welsman attended the Berklee College of Music during 1980-1981 and studied voice in France with Christiane Legrand. She started the Welcar Music label in Toronto, recording her debut CD, Lucky to Be Me, in 1995. She performed throughout Canada and also worked as a jazz vocal professor at the University of Toronto.

During 2004-2005 she toured in Japan, Italy, and Brazil in addition to Canada and worked a bit in Los Angeles as a singer/pianist, but Carol Welsman has yet to become well known in the U.S. despite being a household name in Canada. ~ Scott Yanow https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/carol-welsman/id7239327#fullText

Joy is the first word that comes to mind when Terra Hazelton sings. A popular and wonderful performer on the Toronto jazz scene, Hazelton beams with happiness when she performs. Now, she has released her third album featuring jazz classics for which she is known and new material as well including a lovely jazz ballad setting of Canadian poet Robert Service’s “The Lure of Little Voices” composed by Jeff Gladstone, a friend of hers she has known since childhood.  Recorded live off the floor with Jordan O’Connor on bass and Nathan Hiltz on guitar and ukulele, “That’s All” features classics by the team of Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, by Duke Ellington and the ballad “Keeping You in Mind” by Mary Margaret O’Hara. O’Connor also produced, recorded and mixed the album.Born in British Colombia and raised mostly in Calgary, Hazelton is also a radio personality and an actress who has been nominated for a Genie Award.

Her career began in theatre and comedy improv. She also wrote music and formed her own rock band. Blues great Jeff Healey heard her perform at a country jam called the Melody Ranch at the Brunswick House. Although Healey was renowned as a rock performer, his first love was traditional jazz. He was opening a night club and planned to perform trumpet and guitar on Saturday matinees with his band the Jazz Wizards. “Jeff asked to meet me,” Hazelton said with a smile, “and courted me … musically. Then, he just called me one day and said `Be in Fredericton.’ He got me out of where I was, gave me a job and paid me a lot of money.” Healey also produced her debut CD “Anybody’s Baby” and played on most of the tracks. Terra toured with him as his group’s featured vocalist until his untimely death in 2008. Healey also passed on a personal habit to Terra.

He passionately collected jazz on 78s and had a collection of approximately 50,000 in his house. Terra’s collection now numbers 3,000. “I’ve built my own shelves,” she laughed. “Everyone in the band became a record collector.” “Gimme Whatcha Got,” her second CD, was released in 2009. Featuring favorite jazz and blues material of hers, the album was produced by veteran John Sheard and features many Canadian jazz luminaries including George Koller, Michael Kaeshammer, William Sperandei, Drew Jurecka and special guests Alex Pangman, Russell DeCarle and the Polyjesters. Today, Hazelton performs frequently in Toronto with various ensembles, most notably The Hogtown Syncopators. They perform most Fridays at The Rex Hotel on Queen Street West from 4 to 6 p.m. She also has been an occasional guest host on Jazz FM 91 and, for a period, had a program called “Timeless” celebrating classic compositions from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s from her own collection.  http://www.songandscript.ca/index.php?option=com_k2&view=ite

With her sophomore album,  “Gimme Whatcha Got” , Terra Hazelton pays  tribute to the traditional jazz and gut-bucket blues that she came to love,  under the guidance of her mentor, the late legendary guitarist and music historian Jeff Healey (who also produced and was featured on  her 2004 debut “Anybody’s Baby”).This exciting new release also paints a portrait of a singer who has very much come into her own, supported by a veritable who’s who of Canadian talent;  Michael Kaeshammer, Alex Pangman, country star Russel De Carle and the Valleau Brothers (much loved front-men for the Polyjesters). Hazelton worked closely with producer John Sheard, crafting an album that expresses her own musical journey of the last five years. The result is an album which showcases her distinctive voice, innate musicality and her ability as a born storyteller. With “Gimme Whatcha Got”, Hazelton has emerged as one of Canada’s most versatile and engaging vocalists.  http://www.terrahazelton.com/music/albums/

Originally from B.C., Terra grew up mostly in Calgary. Terra became involved in professional theatre and comedy at the ripe age of 14, studying with Keith Johnstone (Theatresports™)  and Dennis Cahill at the Internationally acclaimed Loose Moose Theatre Company.“The Loose Moose Theatre Co. gave me all the tools I need to be a versatile performer,” she says. “Having the opportunity to start studying there at 14 allowed me to grow not only as an actor and improvisor but also as a human being.  Fellow improvisor and acclaimed Canadian actress Rebecca Northan once told me “Live life like you improvise take risks”.

That advice stuck with me from the start.”  By age 16, she was teaching improvisation, performing regularly in kids’ shows, improv shows, and experimental theatre.  At 18, she enrolled in the prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City, with hopes of pursuing a career on Broadway. At 20 Hazelton moved to Toronto in pursuit of a career in improv and theatre.  One night she was handed a guitar and asked to fulfill the show’s musical component by writing and performing three funny songs. Three chords later, she was on a career path she had never anticipated. Terra moved from performing silly songs in a cabaret setting to forming her own band, leaning towards being a rock chick extraordinaire. She began sitting in with the long-running Melody Ranch afternoon matinee at the Brunswick House in Toronto, where famed singer/guitarist Jeff Healey happened to hear her sing one lucky Saturday. Healey himself was moving into new musical territory after opening a night club and following his love of traditional jazz with his own Saturday matinée band, the Jazz Wizards, with whom he played trumpet as well as guitar.

He hired Terra to be the group’s permanent featured vocalist which gave her the opportunity to tour nationally and promote her debut record “Anybody’s Baby” (Healeyophonic, 2004) which Healey produced himself and plays on most tracks. Now a staple on the Toronto Jazz Scene, Terra Hazelton leads her own band, ‘Terra Hazelton & Her Easy Answers’, and is also a member of other notable ensembles. These include The Hogtown Syncopators where she sings and plays snare drum along with violinist Drew Jurecka, bassist James Thomson, guitarist Jay Danley and pianist Richard Whiteman.  The Hogtown Syncopatorsare the only band that can be found every week at Toronto’s premier jazz venue, The Rex, appearing Fridays from 4-6pm.  You can also catch Terra singing with the fabulous Royal Jelly Orchestra of Jaymz Bee (Jazz.Fm) fame, and with the 10-Piece Jivebombers featuring Alex Dean and Chuck Jackson.  In February of 2009, Terra joined and toured with with Juno Award winner (2008) Brandi Disterheft’s band.  The tour was across Canada including up to the glorious Yukon;  Terra was pleased to tour more with Brandi in the summer of 2009, hitting just about every major Jazz Festival across Canada, including opening for Dave Brubeck in Toronto. A member of Out of the Blue in the 1980s and an oft-employed freelancer in the ‘90s, Canada-born saxophonist Ralph Bowen has been steadily blazing his own path through the mainstream jazz scene. With FIVE, Bowen continues his reinvigoration of the jazz organ group sound, with leanings not toward classic soul-jazz (Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff) but rather towards the more adventurous end of the spectrum (Larry Young), namely hard bop with tinges of fusion. Bowen’s combo, including ultra-modern organ ace Sam Yahel and guitarist Peter Bernstein, burns brightly and intelligently throughout. ~ Mark Keresman http://www.allmusic.com/album/five-mw0000785118

Matt Dusk and Florence K revisit great standards like Somethin’ Stupid, Sunshine of My Life and The Girl From Ipanema with their own jazzy sound. Quiet Nights is a bright, glamorous sounding album which surrounds the listener with the soft comfort of the two artists warm voices. It is the perfect gift for lovers and will hit the shelves just before Valentines Day.

Matt Dusk - My Funny Valentine: The Chet Baker Songbook

11. Someone To Watch Over Me (Feat. Guido Basso) (4:21)
12. I Fall In Love Too Easily (Ryan Ahlwardt) (3:05)

Vocal tributes to Chet Baker have, of late, become a mini-industry. While the vast majority of interpreters have gotten it wrong, confusing Baker’s personal pathos with his music, crooner Matt Dusk succeeds by resisting the temptation to don a misrepresentative mask of tragedy. Instead, he opts to simply be himself. My Funny Valentine could just as easily be a tribute to Sinatra, with whom several selections, including “Angel Eyes” and “All the Way,” are more closely associated.

Across 12 tracks, Dusk alternates between swingin’ loose and light, à la Sinatra’s early Capitol days, and making more grandiose musical statements, as the Chairman was wont to do during his later Reprise years. The arrangements, variously crafted by Shelly Berger, Rick Wilkins and Ryan Ahlwardt, add additional distance, recalling the vibrant Nelson Riddle and Billy May charts that were essential to Sinatra’s midcareer rebound.

Still, Baker’s presence is occasionally felt, the haunted beauty of his horn playing evident on three tracks skillfully embellished by Arturo Sandoval, including a deliciously sultry “Let’s Get Lost,” and on a fragile “Someone to Watch Over Me” gently propelled by Guido Basso. Conversely, Ahlwardt’s attempt to echo Baker’s vocal etherealness while backing Dusk on the closing “I Fall in Love Too Easily” proves misguided, sounding instead like an over-stylized Art Garfunkel. ~By Christopher Loudon

Jazz musician Andrea Superstein is known for her powerful voice and indie jazz sound. Her third album, Worlds Apart, is a meticulously arranged blend of reimagined classics, and electro-infused original songs. "The added layer of having composed and written a lot of the music and lyrics definitely gives me confidence," Superstein told Hot Air host Margaret Gallagher. The album's title comes from Superstein's relationship with her hometown, Montreal, and her current home, Vancouver. "Montreal still holds a strong place in my heart. Those two cities could not be any more different from each other … [it's] kind of reconciling my love for both places." All the original music on Worlds Apart was written in Vancouver, and every track was recorded in Montreal. Elizabeth Shepherd, an acclaimed jazz musician in her own right, produced the record. When Superstein was a little girl, she would rifle through her parents' basement looking for records. What she found were eight-track tapes of Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan. Now on her new album, the jazz vocalist gives Dylan's Don't Think Twice, It's Alright the Superstein treatment. The tempo is restructured, with some magic jazz dust sprinkled on top. "What I like to do with other people's music is try to look at it from a totally different perspective. I think that's the way I can try to make somebody else's song new." Superstein says she has always been drawn to the doo-wop harmonies of 1950s and '60s music, jazz standards, and the harmonies and social messages of folk music of the '60s and '70s. All that influence pops up in Worlds Apart. ~ Laura Sciarpelletti https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/andrea-superstein-s-new-album-is-a-jazzy-blend-of-originals-and-reimagined-classics-1.4835022

This CD features a quiet quartet that is often filled with inner tension and low-volumed heat. Bassist Dave Young engages in close interplay with guitarist Rob Piltch (whose tone is sometimes reminiscent of the late Jimmy Raney's), Phil Dwyer contributes lyrical tenor solos and some moody piano (sometimes sounding a bit like McCoy Tyner on the latter instrument) while drummer Michel Lambert is fine in support. Five of the nine songs are originals by bandmembers while the other pieces (including an abstract "All of Me" and a rather passionless version of Charles Mingus's "Fables of Faubus") almost sound like new compositions; the closing tenor-bowed bass duet on "Whims of Chambers" is most memorable. If the overall results on this session are are not all that unique, the well-played set does serve as a a good example of today's modern mainstream acoustic jazz and should satisfy most listeners. ~ Scott Yanow https://www.allmusic.com/album/fables-and-dreams-mw0000963650
