This two-LP set, Giants of Jazz, (which should be reissued on CD) features a dream band comprised of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt on alto and tenor, trombonist Kai Winding, pianist Thelonious Monk (in a very rare stint as a sideman), bassist Al McKibbon, and drummer Art Blakey.

In general, the all-stars perform up to their usual standards on such standards as "Night in Tunisia," "Woody 'N' You," "Tour de Force," "Allen's Alley," and "Blue 'N' Boogie." Monk is well-featured on "Blue Monk" and "'Round Midnight" but Stitt steals honors on "Everything Happens to Me." A historic and superlative set. By Scott Yanow

Benny Carter - Princeton Concerts (And Beyond) [eight-album series]

"Benny Carter: The Princeton Concerts" is an eight-album series recorded at Carter’s request and until now, unissued. Although he received many distinguished awards (among the National Medal of the Arts, multiple Grammys, and the Kennedy Center Award), it was the doctorate bestowed by Princeton University in 1974 that he especially treasured. Invited and encouraged by Professor Morroe Berger, Carter not only grew close to the school as he led many classes and seminars, but also to the Berger family. Out of that relationship came the monumental biography and cultural history Benny Carter: A Life In American Music (written by Berger, his son Ed, and James Patrick) and the music presented here, recorded by Berger’s son, Ken.

Across these eight albums, Carter leads small groups and one all-star big band comprised of some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. The intensity and interaction with a live audience always brought out the best in Carter and each concert has its own unique moments of inspired improvisation. He effortlessly reveals his mastery of the alto saxophone, the elegance of compositions, and his graciousness as a bandleader in giving generous space to his compatriots.

All, save two, were recorded at Princeton between 1972 and 1983. There is a brilliant 1978 evening captured in Buffalo that features one of the only recordings of the legendary pianist Al Tinney, whose role in the creation of bebop in the early 1940s has long been heralded by historians, but who went largely unrecorded during his long career. The collection set ends chronologically with music from the 90-year-old Carter, playing with astounding freshness and creativity, backed by pianist Chris Neville and bassist Steve LaSpina, who were in Carter’s last band.

Mrs. Hilma Carter has made a gift of this music to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to support their mission of preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz. It is her wish that the music be made available free of charge, and the museum is placing it across the world’s most popular streaming services. In addition, visitors are always welcome (by appointment) to hear the music at the museum.

Tribute bands are often bland affairs, because they become too predictable, while often omitting any artists who played with the deceased artist. Fortunately, this third CD by the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band mixes veterans who worked with the trumpeter and talented younger players who acquit themselves very well. Trombonist Slide Hampton contributed a fresh chart of Dizzy's "Manteca" that is a bit more introspective and less percussive and shouting, with potent solos by pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath scored the subtle, hip treatment of Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas," showcasing alto saxophonist Mark Gross, trombonist Douglas Purviance, and baritonist Gary Smulyan.

Vocalist Roberta Gambarini's solid performance of "'Round Midnight" (and Hampton's fresh arrangement) trump those who claim that this landmark Thelonious Monk composition is recorded all too often; there is always room for a top-notch recording such as this one. Gambarini also guests in Heath's setting of Tadd Dameron's bittersweet ballad "If You Could Seem Me Now" and Hampton's snappy setting of "Lover, Come Back to Me." Nor should the brass players be overlooked: Roy Hargrove's lush playing in "I Can't Get Started," plus his comic vocal in the jive piece "I'm BeBoppin' Too," are complemented by Greg Gisbert's searing trumpet and Michael Dease's brief, effective trombone solo. One of the rare jazz two-record sets that's actually a worthwhile expenditure of vinyl and time, 1975's Bahiana is one of Dizzy Gillespie's finest albums of the decade. In the '40s, Gillespie had been one of the first U.S. bandleaders to take an active interest in Latin jazz, but his interest in the music had been intermittent in the intervening decades; Bahiana (named for the Brazilian state of Bahia) was his first all-Brazilian album in over a decade. It's a goodie, though. By the mid'70s, interest in the original wave of bossa nova had largely died out, replaced on the one side by the tropicalia movement and on the other by the fusiony disco-pop of Airto Moreira and Deodato. Bahiana's richly expansive tunes not one under seven and a half minutes, and even the three ten-plus minute entries deserving every second are built on pure carnival rhythms, like the percolating, self-explanatory "Samba." Guitarist Alexander Gafa contributes half of the eight tunes, but the highlights are Gillespie's own festive "Carnival" and the hypnotic "Olinga," which sounds like Antonio Carlos Jobim sitting in on rehearsals for Kind of Blue. A Portrait of Duke Ellington is an album featuring trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and orchestra performing compositions associated with Duke Ellington, recorded in 1960 and released on the Verve label. All of the orchestral arrangements were provided by then Hi-Lo's accompanist and sometimes arranger Clare Fischer, hired on the basis of a previously recorded but unreleased album with strings, arranged by Fischer for erstwhile University of Michigan classmate Donald Byrd. Byrd played the tape for Gillespie; Gillespie liked what he heard.

Unfortunately for Fischer, especially in light of the critical accolades given the eventual fruit of his, and Gillespie's, labor, Fischer's name was nowhere to be found on the finished LP; widespread awareness of his participation would have to await the CD reissue almost 2½ decades later.

The AllMusic review awarded the album 4.5 stars. The album's original LP release received 5 stars from Billboard, though, owing to Verve's aforementioned oversight, Fischer's contribution went unnoticed. In fact, it was only through the efforts of The Washington Post's Tony Gieske that this, as well as two of Fischer's other groundbreaking efforts in this period, were acknowledged and documented. Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble but Dizzy also manages to bring in some of those wonderfully rich colors that were coming into his later work a tonal depth that's completely amazing, and which pushed Gillespie way past his simple roots of the 40s, into a space that made him one of the most expressive jazz leaders of the 50s. The horn charts alone are totally great and Dizzy's got a wonderful talent for letting the key soloists step out with a really strong voice in the set and although short, the tunes have an incredible reach overall. Although Lalo Schifrin is justifiably praised for his soundtrack work, many jazz purists turn up their noses at his jazz dates, such as his '60s work with Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. The things that make Schifrin an anathema to the diehards the huge orchestras, the pop and soul riffs, the general air of over the top theatricality are all over 1977's Free Ride, his reunion date with Dizzy Gillespie. (Schifrin had been Gillespie's arranger in the late '50s.) In fact, Free Ride is so painfully dated that it's transformed into cockeyed cool, just the sort of record ironic hipsters should listen to while they're reading the novelizations of '70s cop shows that they bought for a bundle off of eBay. Gillespie plays with his usual wit and panache, but most of the time, he sounds like a sideman on his own album; the real focus of Schifrin's arrangements is the funky wah-wah guitars and ARP synthesizer solos that take center stage on tracks like "Fire Dance" (which sounds exactly like it should be the theme for a Charlie's Angels spinoff) and the mellow disco of the closing "Last Stroke of Midnight." Occasionally, Gillespie gets to break out on his own album, with the lovely solo on "Love Poem for Donna" his particular standout. Charlie Parke is one of the most important musicians in jazz history and a household name even for people who never listen to jazz. His music is like a textbook for aspiring jazz musicians, and it still sounds modern even after more than a half century since its creation. 2020 marks the centennial of Parker's birth, and to help commemorate the anniversary, Craft Recordings has released a vinyl box set containing the first four "The New Sounds in Modern Music" series, featuring recordings from 1944-1948. Without question, this is essential listening for anyone who wants to get a taste of some of Parker's most influential sessions. As the liner notes say, these are "the breakthrough recordings that essentially defined bebop."

Of course, these recordings have been reissued many times over the years, so what makes this release so special? Well, there are a few points to consider... First, the set contains exact replicas of the Savoy 10-inch album releases. Everything is precisely reproduced down to the last detail. As the liner notes mention, the producers "intentionally left any typographical errors intact for the sake of historical, rather than factual, accuracy." Just taking these discs out of their sleeves and putting them on a turntable is an experience you can't reproduce in a digital format. Next, the sound quality is excellent. The tracks have been remastered, and each has impressive fidelity considering that they were originally recorded during the 1940s. Along with the overall sound, the songs are genuine classics. The set contains Parker standards such as "Billie's Bounce," Ko-Ko," "Now's the Time," and "Donna Lee," and he is accompanied by musicians such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Max Roach and Tiny Grimes.

Finally, the set contains a booklet with excellent liner notes by Grammy-winning writer, Neil Tesser. He not only provides background information into the recordings, but also discusses Parker's continued influence on contemporary artists. Of course, some might wonder why these albums are being released on 10-inch discs rather than the more conventional 12-inch versions. Tesser explains that at the time these recordings originally came out, "the 10-inch records vastly outsold their larger cousins." Packaging the reissue albums in the original format seems to give a more authentic feel of the overall package. Various - Antonio Carlos Jobim & Friends (3 Parts)

Brazilian songwriter and vocalist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927–1994) was one of the creators of the subtle, whispery, jazz-influenced popular song style known as bossa nova. He has been widely acclaimed as one of Brazil's greatest and most innovative musicians of the twentieth century.

Jobim's place in the annals of popular music was secured by a single hit song, "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964), which he co-wrote with lyricist Vinícius de Moraes. His creative contributions to jazz, however, went much deeper; many of his songs became jazz standards, and, in the words of Richard S. Ginell of the All Music Guide , "Every other set" performed in jazz clubs "seems to contain at least one bossa nova." Jobim was sometimes called the George Gershwin of Brazil, not so much because of any musical or lyric similarity Jobim's songs tended to have oblique, often poetic lyrics quite unlike the clever romantic rhymes of George Gershwin's brother Ira but because his music became the bedrock for the work of jazz musicians for decades after its creation.

Highlights radiate through the history of the Berlin Jazz Days, and November 7, 1968 was a particularly memorable one. On that evening Dizzy Gillespie visited the city on the Spree river; that alone would be enough for every jazz fan to jump for joy, since by that time the incomparable trumpeter was one of the few remaining constants in modern jazz. And he hadn’t brought just any orchestra with him – Dizzie’s combo included outstanding soloists from every phase of his career: saxophonist Cecil Payne and trombonist Ted Kelly from the Forties, colleague Curtis Fuller out of Dizzie’s Fifties groups, and from the younger generation representing the Sixties, Gillespie protégé trumpeter Jimmy Owens. These are only a few of the creative heads in Dizzie’s star-studded “Reunion Big Band”. 

Put together by Gillespie’s long-time musical companion Gil Fuller, the band only needed a few days’ rehearsals before they were breathing as one and ready to conduct their triumphant European tour. They strut their stuff in six pieces, from the exuberant, animalistic energy of “Things To Come” through Paul West’s swinging bass work on “One Bass Hit” on to “Frisco”, pianist Mike Longo’s composition with its chromatic ostinato resounding like a gangster movie soundtrack. From the Latin-saturated “Con Alma” with Dizzy dancing through the piece, through to the precisely arranged “Things Are There”, a wild chase that, after a series of excellent solos, ends in Candy Finch’s drumming fireworks. Dizzy Gillespie commented back then that it was his best big band of the last 20 years. Pianist Mike Longo, still best known for his longtime membership in Dizzy Gillespie's group (1966-73), had his recorded debut as a leader on this Pablo LP (not yet reissued on CD). Longo gathered together an impressive sextet also including trumpeter Virgil Jones, tenor saxophonist Harold Vick, guitarist George Davis, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker, and also welcomed Dizzy himself, who made cameo appearances on conga and a vocal, but not on trumpet. Dizzy Gillespie's final recording, taken from a month he spent featured at the Blue Note in New York, matches the aging giant with such fellow trumpeters as Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, Claudio Roditi, Wallace Roney, Red Rodney, Charlie Sepulveda and the ancient but still brilliant Doc Cheatham (who cuts both Diz and Faddis on "Mood Indigo"). As the greatest musical heir on alto sax to Charlie Parker, it seemed only natural for Phil Woods to record a date with Dizzy Gillespie. This European studio session features Dizzy as a special guest sitting in with one of Woods' greatest quintets, with pianist Hal Galper and the brilliant trumpeter and flugelhornist Tom Harrell. In fact Dizzy's chops had already slipped somewhat during the decade and Harrell clearly outplays him even though he clearly isn't trying to embarrass the legendary trumpeter. Some of Dizzy Gillespie's best and most well-known material from the '60s with a truly talented band is included on this set of recordings done in France. A group of American expatriates and Europeans really musicians from all over the world accompany the trumpeter for music that spans bop, Brazilian sounds, and originals. Argentine pianist Lalo Schifrin plays piano and contributes the arrangements, and Leo Wright is Gillespie's main foil on flute and alto sax, while Hungarian Elek Bacsik plays guitar in subtle ways that reflect the overall style of the sounds inspired by the French Riviera. A classic, stretched-out take of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "No More Blues" kicks off the set, with the sound of kids on an ocean beach leading to Gillespie and Wright trading halves of the melody line as playful as the children in a perfectly played bossa. Another Jobim standard, "Desafinado," has Wright's bright flute and the muted trumpet of Diz in a more pensive but still hopeful romantic mood. "I Waited for You" is the ultimate languid, laying-in-wait ballad, with Schifrin's refrains cuing the trumpeter's procrastinations, while "Long, Long Summer" is the pianist's ode to a sullen affair with ultraviolet light cool shades included in a swinging and modal approach. "For the Gypsies," penned by the leader, has Bacsik more up-front rhythmically, as Wright's mysterious flute contrasts with Gillespie's sharply precise notes in a sneaky quick bossa rhythm. Also written by Dizzy, "Here It Is" is as memorable a tune as he ever did, a signature strutting shuffle jazz/blues that exemplifies the joy in life always present in his music. It's easy and perhaps unfair to take any later jazz album by a trendy, "hot" trumpeter and compare it to a classic like Have Trumpet, Will Excite!. Critics and fans have been afforded the luxury of time to weed out half-efforts. Still, even without former knowledge of who Dizzy Gillespie is, Have Trumpet, Will Excite! separates itself from the crowd pretty quickly. The Latin up-tempo arrangement of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" thrusts the song into an entirely different realm. Junior Mance's piano kicks things of with a quirky, forceful rhythm, and after Gillespie's trumpet lays down the bare bones of the melody, it's pretty much forgotten. From there, the band takes off on a creative surge. The same is true of "My Man." A brave arrangement, kicked off by piano and outlined by trumpet, completely rewrites the piece. "Sure," Gillespie and the band, seem to say, "We can play old swing tunes, but wouldn't it be cool if we turned them inside out?" This approach, along with sharp solos, gives the material an exciting edge. Gillespie's solo on "St. Louis Blues" just soars, while Les Spann, who plays both flute and guitar on the album, follows him with a bristly guitar solo. Mance offers distinctive piano work that matches Gillespie's enthusiasm on tunes like "Woody 'N' You," while bassist Sam Jones and drummer Lex Humphries keep a high-octane rhythm in constant motion. This CD combines two complete and related LPs. When Lalo Schifrin joined the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet in 1960, he was encouraged by Gillespie to write an extended work for him. "Gillespiana" was the result, an impressive five-movement suite that showcased the trumpeter's talents with a large orchestra. The latter half of this CD was recorded at Carnegie Hall the same day that "Gillespiana" was debuted live, but those five pieces are more conventional, highlighted by remakes of "Manteca" and "A Night in Tunisia" (the latter as the more involved "Tunisian Fantasy"). Dizzy Gillespie - Dizzy's Diamonds: The Best Of The Verve Years (3-Disc Set)

Many of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's recordings for the Verve label in the '50s and early '60s show him at the peak of his powers. This three-CD set is a sampler of his legacy, with the discs subtitled "Big Band," "Small Groups & Guests" and "In an Afro Cuban, Bossa Nova, Calypso Groove." The programming jumps all over the place and makes little sense but this set serves as a good excuse to acquire 40 performances by the great Gillespie and the many all-stars who recorded with him. Few but the most fanatical veteran Gillespie fans will have all of these selections. This collection filled a void until Verve got around to doing a much more comprehensive Dizzy Gillespie reissue program. ~Scott Yanow
