Imagine what would happen if Stephane Grappelli met the Chieftains, if Tom Jobim played a Parisian musette, if Scottish poet Robert Burns was in love with Miriam Makeba and James Brown jammed with Jasha Heifetz. This album unites all the music styles I love, not in an i-Pod 'pastiche' way but in the way that whiskies are blended together  subtly yet with distinction. Pianist David Newton, guitarist Nigel Clark and bassist Roy Percy are all top musicians from Scotland whom I am lucky to work with, and Maltese percussion wiz Sandro Ciancio gives the cd a 'world' flavour. We had a great time in the studio in the Scottish hills and I am sure this comes through on the cd. If I had to choose one tune it would be “Couscous and Butter”, a cross of a Scottish Slip Jig with a West-African Soukous feel. We stuffed bits of paper between our strings to give it that Kalimba (thumb piano) sound and added an Udu (jug drum). Assanhado is a choro tune: Brazilian folk music made popular by mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim. Lucy’s Waltz I wrote as a Musette waltz with a South-American twist. Clair de Lune is just a wonderful Debussy piano piece. Águas de Março is special because of the recurring bass line. Havana Highway is my version of Bud Powell meets Cuba, with some influence of my hero Jean-Luc Ponty. Don’t Sleep in the Subway is a Petula Clarke hit based on Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Bebe well, Hermeto Pascoal is just a wizard, a fusion genius. The Irish traditional Cuckoo’s nest I first heard on a 1970s recording by Fairport Convention, where my friend Ric Sanders currently plays the violin. Back to my roots with Grappelli’s beautiful Chanson de Rue (recorded with George Shearing in 1960s), and Django tune Flèche d’Or, which I think works very well in a funk version. My tune Samba for Paula is just a Brazilian samba. It’s the last number on the album but really was the start off this whole ‘non-swing’ project. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/TimKliphuis1

In the early ’50s, near the end of his life, Django Reinhardt had switched to electric guitar and was playing in a more bebop vein. He was evolving. Little did he know that it was his acoustic, swing-based Hot Club work of the ’30s that would give rise to vast numbers of imitators. What would Django have thought? Would he have cared? While those questions will never be answered, he remains the most blatantly imitated jazz guitarist to have worn shoe leather. Today, especially in Europe, where the past takes on dimensions unknown to most Americans, myriad groups model themselves after the Hot Club, and several Django/Gypsy jazz festivals are held each year. While most Django imitators by definition are highly derivative in approach and execution-if the great Gypsy hadn’t lived, they wouldn’t exist-occasionally somebody emerges from the time warp to at least demonstrate that they’re a cut above the pack and maybe even offer a surprise or two. One such player is Fapy Lafertin, whose latest CD, Fleur D’Ennui (Jazz Is Timeless), features the Fapy Lafertin Quintet. Like Django, Lafertin is the real McCoy, having been raised in a Manouche Gypsy family, which, of course, doesn’t make his playing any less derivative but does give him a credential that most six-string pretenders don’t have. Despite his playing’s origins, Lafertin, after one listening, has got to be admired for the way he enthusiastically floats over his group’s bouncy Hot Club-esque tandem guitar rhythm section on tunes like “Fascinating Rhythm” and “Just One of Those Things,” where he tosses off Django licks like he’s been playing them since he’s been in short pants, which he probably has. Throughout, Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis matches him note for note in terms of technique and spirit, skillfully playing the role of Django’s sidekick, Stephane Grappelli. And while the set draws heavily from Reinhardt’s vocabulary and repertoire, a breath of fresh air wafts through the program in the form of four nicely arranged Brazilian choros, which paved the way for the emergence of samba and bossa nova, by the likes of Pixinguinha and Ernesto Nazareth. The choros help this album rise above offerings by the seemingly endless stream of Gypsy knockoffs who are out there. ~  By Jim Ferguson https://jazztimes.com/archives/fapy-lafertin-quintet-and-tim-kliphuis-fleur-dennui/

Dutchman Tim Kliphuis ranks among the world's finest jazz violinists. He takes Stéphane Grappelli's legacy into the 21st Century by infusing Gypsy Swing with Folk and Classical music.

"Stephane Grappelli's style is alive and well in the hands of Tim Kliphuis" ~  Nigel Kennedy

Think Stephane Grappelli, Frankie Gavin, Yehudi Menuhin, Slam Stewart, Django Reinhardt and Oscar Peterson all thrown together and you get an idea of Tim’s musical style. It's Jazz, Folk and Classical tunes in one"swingy, zingy mix" (Glasgow Herald) that is fresh and new but appeals to everyone.

"Ear-caressing" ~ Sir John Dankworth

After touring and recording with gypsy jazz guitarists Fapy Lafertin, Angelo Debarre and Stochelo Rosenberg, Tim moved on to create his own unique style which got him concerts all over the world in venues ranging from jazz clubs and concert halls to Swing and Classical festivals. He worked with Les Paul, Frankie Gavin, Martin Taylor, Bucky Pizzarelli, Martin Hayes and Jay Ungar.

"This was a charming, uplifting performance from a future great. Kliphuis’s music will take you back to a simpler point in time. He has the world at his feet ... check him out." ~ Scotsman

As a continental swing jazz educator, Kliphuis hosts Jazz Violin Workshops around the globe and was featured in several editions of Fiddler Magazine. His Tuition Book about Grappelli's style is scheduled to appear with Mel Bay Publications in 2008 and a first DVD is in the making.

“Kliphuis plays with an astonishingly fluid versatility, incorporating funky slurs, whooping hoedown flourishes" Time O. https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/timkliphuis3
