She can do it all: fusion, rock and jazz. At the tender age of 32 she already has a stupendous carrier, and she has contributed to breaking down the rigid division into genres; in addition she has attracted notice by awakening an interest in jazz in the young, traditionally rock-oriented audience. Cæcilie Norby was born on 9 September 1964 in Fredriksberg, Denmark, into a musical family: her father, Erik Norby, is a renowned score composer, and her mother, Solveig Lumholt, an opera singer. The family's only record with rhythmic music was one with the singer Nancy Wilson, and together with the Beatles tapes it became well worn.

She went to the singing school of Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, and then followed a year at a folk high school with theatre as her main subject. In the summer of 1982, when she participated at a jazz festival at Brandbjerg, she was one of the founders of Street Beat, and she was the vocalist in this group for the next 18 months. From 1983 she was part of the jazz/funk group Frontline, which was awarded the Ben Webster Prize in 1985 and in the same year recorded the album Frontline. In the former Danish music magazine MM, a readers' poll bestowed prizes on the orchestra for "Jazz Act of the Year", "Live Act of the Year", "Most Promising Act", "Album of the Year" and Cæcilie elected "Soloist of the Year".

She has also toured with various groups and has performed several times with the Danish Radio Big Band. In 1985, she launched on a long co-operation with the singer Nina Forsberg in the highly popular rock group One-Two. The group existed right up to 1993 and recorded three albums. 1986 saw Cæcilie representing Denmark in an international jazz orchestra at the Knokke Festival in Belgium. Moreover, Cæcilie Norby has performed as vocal soloist with numerous Danish jazz musicians and orchestras: pianist Jørgen Emborg, Klüvers Big Band, drummer Niels Ratzer, pianist Thomas Clausen and many more. In 1990, Cæcilie's father wrote the work "Concerto for Two Sopranos" for Zealand Symphonic Orchestra. The two sopranos were Cæcilie herself and her mother, and the work contains both classical, rhythmic and improvising elements.

Cæcilie has also performed with her mother and Thomas Clausen with a mixture of opera, musical and jazz titled "Ballads, Blues & Lieder". During the 1990s, Cæcilie Norby has really cultivated her popular version of the standard repertoire of jazz music. She has been on frequent tours with her own quartet comprising pianist Ben Besiakov, bassist Lennart Ginman and Søren Christensen or Alex Riel playing the drums, and she has toured Europe with local quartets and big bands. In addition, she has been external examiner at the Academy of Rhythmic Music in Copenhagen, and moreover she has arranged and sung at various studio productions. In the spring of 1995 her album Cæcilie Norby was released on Blue Note, the legendary jazz label, with contributions by a number of trend-setting international composers and soloists, including saxophonists Randy Brecker and Rick Margitza, drummer Billy Hart, pianist Lars Jansson, and composers Chick Corea, Don Grolnick and Randy Brecker.

The CD was mixed and partly recorded in the USA. The Jazz Special magazine elected Cæcilie Norby one of the year's five best records featuring a Danish jazz musician, and the five-digit sales figures achieved so far both in Denmark and Japan are exceptional for a jazz album. Cæcilie certainly never expected to do that well. Her initial target was a mere 5,000 records sold, which would be something for a jazz album. But then Cæcilie calls her music jazz pop; it is by no means hard-core jazz. Following the release of Cæcilie first CD on Blue Note she has been on tour most of the time, with some of the musicians on the CD Cæcilie Norby as well as others. This success is now being followed up by another Blue Note release: My Corner of the Sky, and the contributors include drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, bassist Lars Danielsson and the Brecker brothers on tenor sax and flugelhorn. As on her first album, Niels Lan Doky is co-producer and co-arranger.

Cæcilie Norby has scored a tremendous success with her numerous projects, and she has been through the entire rock circus without becoming capricious. Although she is a popular favourite at festivals, she is drawn to smaller, more intimate venues, to the standard repertoire of jazz and to the talent of jazz musicians for improvising and going on stage without having spent six months in training camp and without the backing of a huge machinery. What has been referred to as a flirt with jazz must now be called a firm commitment. Cæcilie Norby's voice is lyrical and supple. She colours her vowels to taste. Improvisations and scats are done with elegance. Her phrasing can be both down-to-earth and romantic. She can radiate anything from the sweet and vulnerable to the crude and powerful. Some critics have compared Cæcilie Norby to Swedish Monica Zetterlund and to the American singers Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington and Aretha Franklin.

EARTHENYA is Cæcilie Norby's 14th solo release and the first in 17 years, where all music and lyrics are written exclusively by herself. Her formidable abilities as a storyteller unfold anew in the songs, where relatable subjects are conveyed with an elevated insight, experience and empathy. As a "one off", Cæcilie releases the album EARTHENYA on her own newly established label LOUD LADY MUSIC, as she with this particular release wanted to explore the more pop and soulful sides of herself.

On the album, Cæcilie takes us through 11 strong moods, where music and poetry depics scenes from her life. A kind of autobiographical fiction in each song. One from her early childhood in the seventies about the missing friend with the mysterious tormented eyes. Another from a lifelong friendship where explanations are redundant. Then there is a close-up of a vibrant reunion with a former lover- reminiscing the impossible love that never died. Another is about letting go of a dysfunctional relationship, accepting its demise and enjoying their final destructive ride downhill. Earthenya (the album's title track) is an ode to the earth/mother nature. A realization that even though it should be obvious that the earth means the world to us, we can't stop ourselves from destroying it. Not unlike how we at times forget to appreciate and nurture our closest relationships, while there is still time.

The core and overall theme of the songs on the album seem to revolve around hard earned experiences that brings a person to a status quo, where one starts acting consistent to avoid repetitive anguish. Where you say what you think and accept the irrevocable state of things - and act on it. Really to clear the path and cherish living life to its fullest. No more b.......

About creating the album Earthenya, Cæcilie Norby states:

"When I took part in the Danish TV show 'Toppen af Poppen' (2019), a strong chemistry immediately arose amongst the musicians and myself. Subsequently I put together a dream band consisting of the pianist and guitarist from the show and some other fierce players on bass and drums. The four of us went on tour for several months and had a ball. The tour sparked a desire to record an album with these musicians exploring the more soul and pop orientated sides of my musicality. In the studio we all experienced a light and free sensation in how we could express ourselves musically. The music came first, and within the music, stories that were on my mind and in my heart revealed themselves. The lyrics are personal descriptions - stories and insights into my own experiences, or someone close to me. There are songs about love (even the one you can't save), about friendship, about loss, and about how important it is to hit the brakes when things have gone off the rails.

First Conversation is Cécilie Norby's fourth CD on the American label Blue Note. And which one. The former poptose really estimates a mature and seductive blue tone on the seven standards on the album. On their own compositions by the way. And even on her interpretations of - in this context - so strange numbers like Police's Tea In The Sahara and Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Even on them she stays within the tight limits she herself has spelled out, and that makes the album the original work it has become. The foundations of the music are from some of today's greatest jazz musicians in Scandinavia - Lars Danielsson (bass), Carsten Dahl (piano), Per Jørgensen (trumpet) and Jon Christensen (drums). The album is also recorded with that crew. However, as the sound image turned out to be too thin, the producer added strings - from the Radio Entertainment Orchestra. The result is deeply fascinating. Rarely beautiful. And especially songs such as Kyrie, Never Let Me Go and First Conversation must be highlighted for their compositional qualities. While many pop jazz vocalists such as Holly Cole and Diana Krall are releasing great vocal jazz albums of cover tunes and standards, few are writing songs of the quality that Norby produces. Queen of Bad Excuses is probably the best contemporary pop jazz vocal performance I've heard. Caecillie's previous albums have included a few good originals (especially the excellent Snow on My Little Corner of the Sky) admidst the covers, but this album is fresh, original, and features Norby's exquisite vocals and songwriting from start to finish. From the beautiful Forever Broken to the frantic Psyko Pippi, Norby's voice is smooth and agile, and her piano playing solid and supportive, regardless of the type of music she's doing. Highly, highly recommended. ~Jeffrey J Hanson

Danish singer Caecilie Norby's first recording to be released in the United States is quite a mixed bag. At times, Norby comes across as Nancy Wilson, going over the top in places and not showing much subtlety; on Irving Berlin's classic "Suppertime," she does not seem to know what she is singing about, sounding quite upbeat about a lynching. Some other selections are poppish (including odd revivals of "The Look of Love" and "Spinning Wheel"), but there are places (such as on "Just One of Those Things" and Wayne Shorter's "African Fairytale") where Norby shows potential as a jazz singer.

She is assisted by a strong cast of Americans and Scandinavians (including pianists Dave Kikoski and Joey Calderazzo, keyboardist Lars Jansson, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, trumpeter Randy Brecker, and, on "Spinning Wheel," tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker).

Arabesque is an edgy, moody collection of songs to thrill the musical iconoclast. Classical purists might run for the hills but Danish jazz singer Cæcilie Norby has come up with some extraordinary settings that shed new light on familiar melodies by Rimsky Korsakov, Satie and Debussy, boldly applying her own astringent lyrical interpretations of the stories behind them. The result is an impressionistic aural feast, punctuated by a burst of funky swing (“Bei mir bist du schoen”), a couple of Michel Legrand tracks and an inspirational take on Abbey Lincoln’s “Wholly Earth”. In short, Norby, who has been a pioneer of modern Nordic music, straddling the choppy territory between jazz and pop with her refusal to be categorised, has sharpened her maverick credentials and come up with an audacious concept. Just when you think you’ve pinned it down, the musical influence on each track shifts into new territory.“The Dead Princess” takes Ravel’s haunting theme and turns it into an exploration of the character of the composer’s benefactress, Princess Winnaretta de Polignac. His “Pavane”, so evocative in any setting, is transformed into a brooding meditation on the power of music to arouse memories and sensations.

Norby isn’t the first musician tempted to take liberties with Rimsky Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” prog rock band Renaissance built an entire album around it in the 1970s but she treats it with great respect, her Arabian Nights-inspired lyrics swirling among the excellent accompaniment of musicians including pianist Katrine Gislinge, co-producer Lars Danielsson (on bass, cello and organ). The percussion of Anders Engen and Xavier Devandre-Navarre is a crucial ingredient of Arabesque, fluid and driven, providing a great counterpoint to the fascinating texture of Norby’s voice. There is more than a hint of Berlin cabaret in her timbre at times, comparisons with Ute Lemper are valid but her phrasing is always contemplative and modern.

Norby is more about the inner monologue than playing to the gallery. Other highlights include “The Tears of Billie Blue”, a shimmering interpretation of Debussy’s “Claire de Lune”, and “No Air”, which turns Satie’s Gymnopédie into sultry, delicate soliloquy. There is also a Danish version of Legrand’s “Windmills of Your Mind” (“Hvirvelvinden”) and a bonus track, “How Oft”, a tribute to the singer’s father, Erik, who composed it. An absorbing landscape of an album. https://cry-me-a-torch-song.com/2011/05/10/album-review-caecilie-norby-arabesque/

Norby, Nergaard and Gustafsson have each defined female jazz vocal in Scandinavia over the last 10 years and have spearheaded the current surge of talented new female jazz singers. The three women each have an impressive career in their native countries as well as around the world. From a classical upbringing, to pop, jazz funk and jazz, Norby listens solely to her heart and evaluates the musical quality of melodies fully free of genre restrictions. It is a path between worlds that her ACT debut 'Arabesque' (9723-2) defined two years ago: She wrote her own lyrics to classical works, from Rimski-Korsakov and Ravel to Michel Legrand, and transported them to jazz with the aid of her husband Lars Danielsson and their band. Now, with her second ACT album 'Silent Ways' she goes back in the other direction to some extent.

She selected a dozen of her favourite singer/songwriter melodies including 'Hymnen' by herself and her husband, and charged them up with classical and jazz influences. A powerful, thrilling, convincing mix, on the classics like Bob Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone', John Fogerty's 'Have You Ever Seen The Rain' and Paul Simon's 'Hearts And Bones', on the earthly tracks like Barrett Strong's 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', the originally bulky works like Tom Waits' "Diamonds And Gold", the Indie-rock anthem "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails genius Trent Reznor or on the loungey title track 'Silent Ways' composed by Wolfgang Haffner, to which Norby contributes her wonderful lyrics. It is 'the sound of the new, European jazz' that vocalist Caecilie Norby stands for like no other, the way she best defines it.  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silent-Ways-Caecilie-Norby/dp/B00C1GBPIM.
