Grammy Award-winning saxophonists and identical twins, Peter and Will Anderson document another burner of a recording on their Featuring Jimmy Cobb album, released within days of the passing of the legendary drummer in May 2020. The last surviving member of the Miles Davis band that recorded the ground-breaking jazz album Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959), Jimmy Cobb passed away at age 91. While not originally designed as a tribute project, this album may well be one of the last recordings featuring Cobb, as his last album as leader, This I Dig of You (Smoke Sessions Records, 2019), was released in 2019. The Anderson brothers craft an exciting session of music, mixing six new originals and four standards in which each piece is a keeper. Accompanying Will, on alto saxophone, and brother Peter, on tenor sax, are Jeb Patton on the piano, David Wong on bass and, of course, Jimmy Cobb. The band opens in blistering fashion, cooking through the first four originals: "Two for One," "Hot and Cold," "Blues for You," and "Rhythm In F," where the bebop and hard bop sounds paint this canvas red hot.

There are two relative soft spots on this album with the first belonging to the Anderson treatment of the Vernon Duke classic "Autumn In New York." On "Someday My Prince Will Come," and the time-honored standard from Duke Pearson, "Jeanine," the boys are wild with phenomenal call and response performances. The Jimmy Van Heusen standard "Polka Dots & Moonbeams," occupies the other mellow piece of the set with Will teeing off on the alto, marking this rendition of the piece as one of the finest. The brothers play in unison on the final track, "I'll Tell You Later," capping off an incredible session of hard-core bebop the way it was intended to be performed. The rhythm section, and especially Cobb, provide an amazing performance. As for the twins, we've heard the phrase "brothers in arms." Well, in this case it's "brothers in bebop," for Will and Peter Anderson Featuring Jimmy Cobb is one outstanding recording and remembrance of a legend.~ Edward Blanco https://www.allaboutjazz.com/featuring-jimmy-cobb-peter-and-will-anderson-outside-in-music

There’s only one way to fully appreciate the new jazz album by the Bethesda-bred, Juilliard-trained Anderson twins, Peter and Will, and guitarist Alex Wintz: Keep it spinning. Listen to “Reed Reflections” three times: First, to hear the Andersons’ saxophones and clarinets elegantly converge, converse and engage in delightful counterpoint; second, to focus on Wintz’s resonating chordal propulsion and crisp, single-note interludes; and, finally, to hear the arrangements in full, imaginatively unfolding in ways that consistently bring a fresh perspective to such classic pop and jazz tunes as “Cherokee,” “Willow Weep for Me” and “In a Sentimental Mood.” Wonderfully evocative tributes to Thelonious Monk (“Bye-Ya”) and Bud Powell (“Bud on Bach”) offer more reasons to stay tuned. Even then, anyone with a taste for swing, bop and chamber jazz will want to come back for more. The Andersons earned reams of praise for their 2013 debut album, “Correspondence,” which featured pianist Kenny Barron and other well-known artists, but the streamlined “Reed Reflections” is no less impressive. In Wintz, the siblings have a collaborator who can offer pianistic touches as well as evoke the sound of legendary and contemporary jazz guitar masters, from Charlie Christian to Martin Taylor. As a result, the arrangements, which often feature the reeds trading places, have more texture and color than you might expect. And if some of the subdued performances strike particularly soulful notes, the shifting tempos ensure that the trio’s ability to swing effortlessly is never overshadowed for long. ~ Mike Joyce https://www.washingtonpost.com/goingoutguide/music/anderson-trio-album-review-reed-reflections/2014/05/22/585d65f2-dc62-11e3-8009-71de85b9c527_story.html

Peter & Will Anderson - Deja Vu

On this thoroughly entertaining quintet session, twins Will and Peter Anderson team up with one of the most renowned and beloved siblings in jazz history, drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, who turns 80 on May 31. No surprise, then, that the young reedmen sound as if they’re fully enjoying the cross-familial connection here, buoyed by Heath’s rhythmic joie de vivre. Of course, given the Andersons’ bop-rooted influences and Heath’s obvious compatibility, who would have expected anything less?

The title and opening cut, one of eight tunes penned by the Andersons for this outing, is emblematic of the album’s virtues. The frontline—Peter on tenor saxophone, Will on alto—introduces a vibrant, spiraling theme that soon gives way to a series of fluid turns from the reedmen and pianist Jeb Patton. All the while Heath is in delightful form, nimbly accenting, prodding and interjecting, before fashioning a crisply syncopated break. “Presque Vu,” the following performance, is more melodically stealthy, but again the saxes add colorful contrasts, and the rhythm section, fortified by bassist David Wong, is lifted by Heath’s always-salutary presence. “Belfast Blues,” its title notwithstanding, is actually a burner that also reveals the band’s cohesiveness and spirit. When Heath sits out on several cuts, drummer Phil Stewart prevents lulls from settling in, though he quietly enhances the mood during an insinuatingly lyrical, alto-limned performance of “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.” Like “Lover Man” and “Rachel,” a woven ballad composed by Peter for his wife, it’s yet another reminder that when it comes to elegantly embellishing and resolving a romantic theme, the Andersons excel. ~By Mike Joyce

Peter Anderson, Will Anderson - Correspondence

What’s a quick way for young jazz musicians to appear out of their league? Book some studio time with pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ben Wolfe and drummer Kenny Washington. But saxophonists (and identical twins) Peter and Will Anderson consistently rise to the challenge on Correspondence, displaying a firm grounding in bop/postbop tradition and demonstrating impressive harmonic and rhythmic assurance. Robust tandem passages and fluid improvisations generate lots of color and contrast, with Peter, on tenor, and Will, on alto, reinvigorating “Shaw ’Nuff” and other jazz and pop classics. Better yet are the original tunes, such as Will’s ever-spiraling romp “Go Ahead!,” which point to an exceedingly bright future. In his liner notes, Phil Schaap recalls that the Andersons received A’s in his Origins of Jazz class at Juilliard; you can apply the same grade to this CD, the Andersons’ first as leaders. ~ Mike Joyce  http://jazztimes.com/articles/107967-correspondence-peter-will-anderson
