An amazing lady with an amazing voice who has been delighting people for over 50 yrs including Duke Ellington who picked her out to sing in his second sacred concert and commented that if he did not have Babs to sing for him he would have to hire three other singers to cover for her. She is also on other Ellington recordings including "Sernade to Sweden" where the liner notes have this quote from the Duke, "This voice embodies all the warmth, joy of life, rhythm and tragedy that, for me, is the innermost secret of jazz". As always DE says it like it is. ~Brian Beale

Recorded in Studio 4 Swedish Radio, Stockholm, November 26 & 27, 1974.

Alice Babs is a most captivating performer and was born in Sweden in 1924. Though no longer an active recording artist, Prophone Records of Sweden saw fit to digitally remaster material from two sessions in 1974 and 1975. The results are nothing less than wonderful. The first is from Swedish Broadcasting Corporation material and includes nine tracks with the Nils Lindberg band in accompaniment. The other session includes six songs recorded at Saint Maria Magdelena Church in Stockolm in 1975 and Alice is accompanied by Ulf Wesslen at the church organ.

Duke Ellington first met Alice Babs in 1963 for a Swedish TV program and Duke immediately recognized a super talent. A recording session followed in Paris a few months later. The association and friendship continued and in 1968, Alice was invited to sing with Ellington at the premiere of his "Second Sacred Concert" and in 1973 she appeared again with Duke at the Newport Jazz Festival.

This CD, "Serenading Duke Ellington", contains a fine mix of Ellington material and is primarily secular. However, some "sacred" compositions are included. This is a collection of fabulous melodies performed by an incredible singer and top notch musicians. Alice renders the difficult numbers such as "Warm Valley" with absolute confidence. ~Richard Bourcier

A popular singer when she was still a young teenager, Alice Babs has had a long and varied career. She made her recording debut in 1939 at the age of 15 and, although her yodelling made her initially popular and the novelty "Swing It, Mr. Teacher" was her first hit, Babs even at the start had a highly appealing voice and a lightly swinging style. She mostly recorded in jazz and swing-oriented settings throughout the years of World War II. Babs remained active throughout the 1950s and '60s in Europe, singing everything from jazz (recording with Duke Ellington in 1963 and performing the classic "Heaven" at his second spiritual concert) and pop to a bit of classical music. By the late '70s, Alice Babs had become less active but into the mid-'90s, she occasionally performed on special occasions. Although her important first set with Duke Ellington (on Reprise) remains out of print, a Phontastic CD (Swing It!) does a fine job of summing up her first 15 years on records.
