Doris Day (born Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff; April 3, 1922 – May 13, 2019) was an American actress and singer. She began her career as a big band singer in 1939, achieving commercial success in 1945 with two No. 1 recordings, "Sentimental Journey" and "My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time" with Les Brown and His Band of Renown. She left Brown to embark on a solo career and recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967.

Day was one of the greatest Hollywood film stars of the 1950s and 1960s. Her film career began with Romance on the High Seas (1948). She starred in films of many genres, including musicals, comedies, dramas and thrillers. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953) and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Some of her best-known films are those in which she costarred with Rock Hudson, including Pillow Talk (1959), for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. She also worked with James Garner on both Move Over, Darling (1963) and The Thrill of It All (1963) and starred alongside Clark Gable, Cary Grant, James Cagney, David Niven, Ginger Rogers, Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, James Garner and Rod Taylor in various films. After ending her film career in 1968, only briefly removed from the height of her popularity, she starred in her own television sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
.
In 1989, Day was awarded the Golden Globe and the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2008, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 2011, she was awarded the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. In 2011, Day released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which contained new material and became a UK Top 10 album. As of 2020, she was one of eight recording artists to have been the top box-office earner in the United States four times. times..https://musicboard.app/artist/5860

Wanna know - and wanna hear - how Doris Day became one of the biggest multimedia stars on the planet? This 24-track collection carefully culls Doris' finest and rarest performances from over a decade of appearances on the radio, where her star first really began to shine. First, we begin with a 1944 rendition of one of her signature songs, 'Sentimental Journey,' with the big band that really vaulted her into the stratosphere, The Les Brown Orchestra. Then we double back all the way to her very first radio performances with local Cincinnati bandleader Barney Rapp, who was the man who urged Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff to change her name to Doris Day.

After that, we're off and running with more mid-'40s appearances with Les Brown, 1950 duets on The Bob Hope Show with Bob ('Sunshine Cake') and Jimmy Wakely ('Slippin' Around'), and a lot more songs from The Bob Hope Show that reunited Doris with Les Brown, who served as the show's musical director. We've found period pictures galore for the package'which, by the way, was put together with the full knowledge and consent of the late, great lady herself'and have commissioned liner notes by Joe Marchese that chart the steep trajectory of Doris Day's career through these radio recordings. Remastered, like our other Doris Day rarities collections, by Mike Milchner at SonicVision'a perfect way to celebrate the Doris Day centennial!

(2:29) 12. Time to Say Goodnight

"The mood of these songs is dreamy," writes annotator Pete Martin, thus defining the theme of Doris Day's second LP of 1961. As usual, someone Day herself, her conductor, a Columbia Records A&R person had chosen a theme for her album and picked a group of songs, most of them interwar standards that derived from stage musicals or movies. Dreaminess was a concept familiar to any band singer of the 1940s, and Day was such a singer, so she certainly knew her way around "I'll Buy That Dream," even if the hit versions of the 1945 song were by such competitors as Helen Forrest (with Dick Haymes) and Kitty Kallen (as vocalist with Harry James' band). Her vocal style, warm, but never actually sensual, had always conformed to the unruffled approach of the '40s band singers, and she was right at home exploring sedate nighttime fantasy. Actually, though, the concept was a bit threadbare by now; Day had already recorded "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (And Dream Your Troubles Away)" on her 1958 album Day by Night, and obvious choices such as "Dream," "I Had the Craziest Dream," and "Darn That Dream" were eschewed in favor of a handful of unknown songs. Day did well by such unusual theater choices as "My Ship" from Lady in the Dark and "Someday I'll Find You" from Private Lives, and orchestra director Jim Harbert (who contributed his own "I Believe in Dreams") swathed everything in blankets of strings. But the album was not all it could have been, and the use of second-rate material and a second-rate conductor suggested that Columbia was losing faith in Day as a recording artist after years of poor sales. Ironically, it became her first new album to chart since 1957. ~ William Ruhlmann https://www.allmusic.com/album/i-have-dreamed-mw0000845878

Recorded late in 1961, this album is a milestone in Doris Day's career despite having generated no hits as her best long-player, and her purest jazz solo album. Cut as a duet with André Previn (with Previn Trio bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Frank Capp providing occasional support), the album presents Day in the most intimate musical setting of her career. Her trademark style of singing works twice as well here as it did on her swing-era and early solo recordings. The repertory includes "Fools Rush In," and Alec Wilder's "Give Me Time," "Falling in Love Again," and a few Previn-authored pieces that hold up magnificently in this company. ~ Bruce Eder https://www.allmusic.com/album/duet-mw0000091880

One couldn’t imagine a better opening number for the radio program The Doris Day Show than “It’s Magic,” for each week between March 1952 and May 1953, the versatile song stylist and beloved motion picture star cast a spell over listeners worldwide with an intimate gathering of famous friends filled with music and laughter. Over the course of five dozen broadcasts of The Doris Day Show—recorded in Hollywood in front of a live audience and happily preserved on 16-inch transcription discs—Doris joined her special guests at the piano for performances of songs she often had never commercially recorded. This is a largely unknown and scarcely documented facet of Doris’ career, and Day Time on the Radio brings to light no less than 32 rarities including 27 duets and five solo performances. Among her notable foils are frequent leading man Gordon MacRae, who starred in five pictures with Doris; here the two of them sing a total of four duets, highlighted by their medley of “Cuddle Up a Little Closer”/”Till We Meet Again.” Movie stars Kirk Douglas, George Murphy, Ronald Reagan (!), and Broderick Crawford all prove willing and able duet partners, while the more musically-inclined Tony Martin, Howard Keel, Smilin’ Jack Smith, and Frank Loesser lend their formidable talents to a mix of traditional and Broadway-inspired fare. Doris’ sparkling solo performance of “Till I Waltz Again with You” finishes Day Time on the Radio with a flourish before a couple of hidden bonus tracks: her renditions of the opening “It’s Magic” and closing “Love to Be with You” radio themes sans announcer. Joe Marchese’s detailed notes and rare photos round out what is a fantastic addition to the Doris Day discography, the first authorized release ever of her long-lost radio performances.

There may be no better shorthand for Frank Loesser’s genius than the words “heart and soul.” They never deserted him, from the dapper hit-parade favorites he wrote for Hollywood, to his ambitious Broadway career that produced – in little more than a decade – Where’s Charley?, Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. A complex and sophisticated man, Loesser somehow managed to keep the essence of “heart and soul” in everything he wrote, without ever seeming glib. His craft deepened and broadened, but it never lost an almost streetwise honesty that is as dazzling and sharp as a diamond. You never feel cheated or manipulated in a Frank Loesser song. Seduced, maybe. Teased and kidded, certainly. Moved, almost always. And joyously entertained. ~ David Foil

This 20-track companion disc to the Ken Burns' PBS documentary The War provides a brief glimpse into the swing and pop music synonymous with World War II. Attempting to choose 20 songs for a single disc that are beloved by those who lived through that era, while also trying to sustain the curiosity of those who didn't, is a lofty goal. As it turns out, Burns and the producers pieced together an impeccable track listing that covers the full range of emotions withstood by a generation during wartime, from the upbeat and optimistic swing performances of "Little Brown Jug" (Glenn Miller), and "Pennies from Heaven" (Earl Hines Orchestra with Billie Holiday), to the melancholy romanticism of "Memories of You" (Louis Armstrong), "Let's Get Lost" (Frank Sinatra), and "Sentimental Journey" (Les Brown). The liner notes are informative as every title on the soundtrack was chosen by Burns and co-producer Lynn Novick. The interested listener should also investigate two other individual CDs coinciding with this series: I'm Beginning to See the Light: Dance Hits from the Second World War and Songs Without Words: Classical Music from the War. ~Al Campbell
