LeeAnn Ledgerwood, John Graham Davis, Brandon Lewis - Walkin' Up

Ever hear of LeeAnn Ledgerwood? Too few nonmusicians have. Originally from Ohio, the Berklee grad has been working, recording and teaching (jazz piano and composition at the New School) in New York, and obviously battling the glass ceiling while spreading the gospel according to Bill Evans. Well, an upgraded Evans. Maybe that’s what makes her so unmarketable to ordinary jazz fans. She has more technique than she can hope to use. It spills out all over her new release, Walkin’ Up (SteepleChase), but it doesn’t intimidate her two young compatriots, bassist John Graham Davis (a former student of hers) and drummer Brandon Lewis. Nor does it stop her from choosing difficult material, including tunes by Wayne Shorter (“This Is for Albert”), McCoy Tyner (“Passion Dance”), Carla Bley (“Ida Lupino”), John Coltrane (“Lonnie’s Lament”) and Trane’s conception of Harold Arlen’s “Out of This World.” The balladic highlight is Tadd Dameron’s “If You Could See Me Now,” with a well-pitched solo by Davis. Very few have tried to record the Bill Evans-penned title tune; Ledgerwood disposed of it first take. ~ Harvey Siders https://jazztimes.com/reviews/eighty-eights/leeann-ledgerwood-trio-walkin-up/

LeeAnn Ledgerwood - Simple Truth

Catalyzed by her recovery from breast cancer, LeeAnn Ledgerwood revitalizes the piano-trio format on Simple Truth, her first SteepleChase disc since 2003’s Walkin’ Up. It interweaves originals such as the respectful homage “Ballade for Bill Evans” and the calm, commanding title cut with inspired takes on such modernist classics as Miles Davis’ “Nardis,” Wayne Shorter’s puckish, driving “Pinocchio” (use spell check, SteepleChase; you mangled this title) and Bronislau Kaper’s “Invitation,” served up sultry, leisurely and Latin. (Bassist Ron McClure lays down a lovely, darkling solo on that last number.) The tracks shift between the structured-a recasting of Davis’ “All Blues” is strikingly purposeful and architectural-and the more organic, like the stormy, lambent original “Betrayal of Daylight.” Ledgerwood’s approach is romantic and warm; leavening and animating it are the stately McClure and impressionistic drummer Nasheet Waits, a master of brush stroke and cymbal splash. Ledgerwood is not interested in impressing with technique and daring; hers is an artistry of nuance and emotional layering. Fittingly, the detail in these cleanly produced tracks, as she illustrates in building “Nardis” geometrically, solo, before bass and drums kick in, is the surprise and reward. The trio’s empathy is startling but expected: Ledgerwood has played with McClure since the early ’80s, and Waits (son of the late drummer Freddie Waits) fits in as if born to the group. Ledgerwood doesn’t set out to blaze trails. Her intent is to craft thoughtful, personal originals that build on and dovetail with a rich archival repertoire. To the pianist’s credit, she succeeds. Simple Truth is an appropriate and understated title for this modest, inviting album. ~ Carlo Wolff https://jazztimes.com/reviews/albums/leeann-ledgerwood-simple-truth/

An album that bursts out beautifully, right from the very first note then continues to hold us rapt throughout, with that strong sense of surprise we love from a really well-done piano trio album! LeeAnn Ledgerwood's no stranger to the recording studio, but this album really feels like something special and different a set that has her musical imagination maybe sparked with even more swing than before, all balanced with a warmly lyrical touch and set up in perfect communication with the bass of Ron McClure and drums of Billy Hart!

The album's the sort that someone might be playing, and you'd step over and ask "What's that?" especially on the more upbeat numbers, which really grab us. Titles include the originals "Renewal" and "I Wish You Knew" plus "All Blues", "Summernite", "502 Blues", "A Shade Of Jade", and "Autumn Leaves".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/859856/LeeAnn-Ledgerwood:Renewal

For this solo piano album, LeeAnn Ledgerwood performs eight John Coltrane compositions plus the ballad "I Want to Talk About You." To her credit, she does not just play some of 'Trane's better-known tunes but explores some of his obscurities, including those from his last period. It is not too common to hear solo piano versions of "5th House," "Venus," "Resolution," and "Compassion." Ledgerwood puts plenty of feeling into her interpretations and, without copying McCoy Tyner or Alice Coltrane, she is able to bring back the spirit of this often-forgotten music while not de-emphasizing her own musical personality. This is a well-conceived release that rewards repeated listenings. ~Scott Yanow

On her fourth SteepleChase release, pianist LeeAnn Ledgerwood is heard with a highly esteemed rhythm section: Ron McClure on bass and Billy Hart on drums. The spirit of John Coltrane looms large on this trio outing  Ledgerwood plays stirring renditions of "Wise One" and "India," and opens with "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," sticking closely to the arrangement heard on Coltrane's Sound. McCoy Tyner's "Blues on the Corner" again drives home the Coltrane theme (watch out for Billy Hart on this cut). By including "My Funny Valentine," "Spring Is Here," and "Some Other Time," Ledgerwood is also paying homage to Bill Evans, her earliest influence. While this set includes no originals, it does showcase Ledgerwood's highly advanced and emotionally charged playing, which encompasses diverse streams of modern jazz history. The title track, by fellow pianist and kindred spirit Richie Beirach, closes the album in swinging fashion. ~ David R. Adler http://www.allmusic.com/album/paradox-mw0001014385

After graduating from Berklee, Ledgerwood moved to New York in 1982 and worked regularly in local clubs including Bradley's. She toured Sweden with Red Mitchell and was a member of Eddie Gomez's group. In addition to appearing on Gomez's 1988 release Power Play, LeeAnn Ledgerwood led her own 1991 CD for Triloka, You Wish. ~ Scott Yanow https://itunes.apple.com/ca/artist/leeann-ledgerwood/id160753929#fullText
